N.O.R.E. Gets Wale And Waka Flocka Hooked On His Latest Mixtape Drug

‘I wanted to pick a wild name,’ N.O.R.E. tells Mixtape Daily of his new Crack on Steroids tape. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Adam Murphy N.O.R.E. Almost a year after dropping his N.O.R.E.aster EP, Noreaga returns with the drug-induced Crack on Steroids. “I wanted to pick a wild name so when people look at it, they’ll say, ‘What the hell is that?’ ” N.O.R.E. told Mixtape Daily about his latest release. Picking up where he left off last year with his street single “Nore Shot Somebody,” the C-N-N rapper keeps things “Grimey” on the tape-opening “Kenny Powers.” It’s not exactly an ode to the popular HBO comedy ; instead, N.O. uses Danny McBride’s fictional character as a thinly veiled reference to his distinct brand of cocaine. While partner-in-rhyme Capone was locked up in the late 1990s, N.O.R.E. proved he could hold things down as a soloist, crafting a number of hits like “Super Thug” and “Grimey.” On C.O.S., however, the Queens, New York, MC invites a number of his rap friends to the party. RZA shows up for “Hare Krishna” and Game, Busta Rhymes and Waka Flocka Flame pitch in on the Chris Brown-sampling “Lehhhgooo.” On the latter, producer Charli Brown flips Breezy’s opening ad lib from “Look at Me Now” and turns it into a catchy chorus. Wale also jumps on “Get Her” and will.i.am channels Slick Rick on “We Ain’t,” then Nore’s latest signee, Glacierz, proves she can hang with the fellas and delivers a standout verse on “War Song.” For all his guest spots, though, N.O.R.E. maintains his vibe throughout the tape — not that we expected anything less. Baz Luhrmann, Warner Bros. Really Stretching the 3-D Evangelism for Great Gatsby

If you’ve had enough of the 2011-12 awards season by now (and sweet Jesus in a pie-eating contest, who hasn’t?) can the NY Times interest you in next year’s race? That’s where filmmaker Baz Luhrmann has turned to continue his early stumping on behalf of The Great Gatsby , the Leonardo DiCaprio-starring megabudget adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Jazz Era masterpiece. Er, sorry — the megabudget 3-D adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Jazz Era masterpiece. Which, in 2012, is probably redundant, but hey. The NYT confirms Gatsby ‘s budget around $125 million — “before government rebates,” of course, which still likely delivers a film in the low nine figures (to say nothing of its marketing budget). We all can likely agree that that is an insane amount of money to spend on adapting a renowned story that you can probably read faster than you can watch, or on an updating preceded by at least two failed adaptations and featuring just one bankable star. Nevertheless, by factoring 3-D into the equation, Luhrmann has both insured his film against devastating, Australia -style box-office losses and — thanks in part to the NYT and particularly to his partners at Warner Bros. (whom I’ll get to in a moment) — spun an equally pragmatic path on the Hollywood high road. But while it’s never too soon to hype (I guess?), is Luhrmann really doing himself any favors by likening his Gatsby not to Avatar , not to Hugo , but rather to a 58-year-old Hitchcock effort that virtually no one’s actually seen in 3-D? To examine the potential of actors in 3-D without the gimmickry of contemporary action sequences, Mr. Luhrmann turned to Alfred Hitchcock’s 3-D version of Dial M for Murder , from 1954. It wasn’t easy. He found only two projectors, one in New York, one in Burbank, Calif., that could still play that film. The sensation of moving through it with Ray Milland, Grace Kelly and Robert Cummings sealed the deal — both for himself and for Mr. DiCaprio and the troupe, who also studied the Hitchcock film. “It was like theater,” Mr. Luhrmann said. Burbank, Calif.? Would that be the same Burbank where Warner Bros. is headquartered — the very studios where Hitchcock shot Dial M all those years ago? And would that be the same Warner Bros. that holds the rights to not only Dial M but also Gone With the Wind and Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King , to which Gatsby is compared here as a film that “might also supply what has been missing in the Oscar season — the heat of a film that decisively breaks a barrier”? And the same Warner Bros. playing a little preemptive Oscar politics after failing to keep DiCaprio and J. Edgar at this year’s awards-season forefront? Whose domestic distribution president told the Times that “[a]dult interest in 3-D has ‘settled into a very, very good place'” yet couldn’t coax anyone over 25 into seeing its bloated 3-D Green Lantern ? That Warner Bros.? I see. Anyway, this may yet turn out to be the greatest literary adaptation since The Godfather and may yet succeed in Luhrmann’s quest to “make it feel like you’re inside the room” (which, I dunno, is why I go to plays?), and may yet succeed in righting both Luhrmann and Warner Bros.’s ships after weathering pricey, stormy dalliances with prestige, and may yet sweep the 2013 Oscars (in which case I hope someone remembered to cast Uggie ). But has so obviously and self-servingly faking the 3-D funk ever really worked? Seriously, I’m asking. This just feels… off .

How Do You Say ‘Green Lantern’ in Russian?

Now here’s a trend I can get behind: “[U]p to December, there hadn’t been a single Russian film in the top 20. The film expected to create a bombastic box-office crater -– war epic Burnt By the Sun 2 , at $40m the country’s most expensive production ever –- fizzled out embarrassingly when part two was released in May. A few years ago, Russians learned to stop worrying and love the blockbuster as they began producing SFX-laden spectaculars like Night Watch ; now they’re learning about the flipside -– the car-crash pleasures of rubbernecking a box-office flop.” [ The Guardian ]

Safe House Trailer: Denzel Washington Tells Ryan Reynolds There is No Safe Word

It’s still too soon after Green Lantern for me to embrace Ryan Reynolds as a rugged protagonist. When we erase his comic sensibilities, we’re left with a geometric jawline, bleak opals for eyes (like expensive Frosty the Snowman), and an anxious self-seriousness that Van Wilder would’ve mocked. In the trailer for Safe House , he dons the hero face again playing a hunted man alongside Denzel Washington, who is killing it here. Trailer after the jump.

Rick Ross, Kreayshawn Don’t ‘Worry’ About Each Other

‘Things that happen outside of the music don’t really have anything to do with the music,’ says Kreay, who also squelched a feud with Gangsta Boo. By Jocelyn Vena Kreayshawn Photo: Getty Images Kreayshawn made headlines last week when she found herself tied up in a supposed beef with fellow femcee Gangsta Boo . After shrugging off the drama and declaring the pair beef-free, she opened up about why she seems to attract so much drama. “Sometimes it’s shocking just to see the amount of attention your words can have,” she told MTV News. “At the same time, it’s something you just have to deal with. In my opinion, I think media and music are two very different things, and sometimes people put them together. But things that happen outside of the music don’t really have anything to do with the music. And I’m concentrated on the music.” Of course, Kreay and Rick Ross have exchanged some words since her rise to fame, though these days, she insists that the two MCs have decided to squelch the feud. “We don’t have no problems,” she assured us. “He’s busy doing a whole bunch of things, and so am I. We’re not worried about each other.” As her profile continues to rise, the singer commented on her life as a celebrity, noting that she’s still adjusting to all the madness that goes with a career in the music industry. “Sometimes it gets scary, but then you have to think about it, [and] like everything, it’s just a new opportunity. And when things get thrown at you hella quick, then you might be like, ‘I’m not sure I’m ready for this,’ ” she said. “But everything that’s been thrown at me, I’ve basically been catching, so it’s been going really good. I think this is a great opportunity for somebody like me who is a creative and down-to-earth type of person.” Why do you think Kreayshawn attracts so much drama? Let us know in the comments! L.E.P. Bogus Boys Bring Authentic Street Music On New Tape

‘As I listen to the music, I’m like, this is it, this is perfect,’ DJ Green Lantern tells Mixtape Daily of Now or Neva. By Rob Markman L.E.P. Bogus Boys and DJ Green Lantern Photo: MTV News Main Pick Headliners : L.E.P. Bogus Boys and DJ Green Lantern Representing : Chicago Mixtape : Now or Neva Real Spit : It’s no secret that the authentic brand of street music that used to dominate rap isn’t as abundant as it once was. That’s not to say that there isn’t a demand for harder-edge hip-hop, and L.E.P. Bogus Boys prove that with their latest mixtape, Now or Neva. “I been rocking with them for a while, had them on my radio show a couple of times. I’ve been living with their music for a long time, been a fan, been a connoisseur of street music for the longest, and it’s an honor to be called on to put this joint together. As I listen to the music, I’m like, this is it, this is perfect,” DJ Green Lantern told Mixtape Daily . On its surface, Now or Neva is a tightly woven collection of menacing block anthems. Dig deeper and you’ll find heavier results. Beyond the brash boasting, guts and glory is a narrative of a tag-team duo who have vowed to make something out of nothing. “Amerikkka’s Worst Nightmare,” with its brooding bass and eerie keys, is the perfect ‘hood Halloween ode. There’s no fictional slashers like Freddy Krueger or Michael Myers — instead, Moonie and G Count lay out a plan to make it out of poverty, even if it involves robbery and murder. The J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League-produced “25th Hour” touches on the same desperation. “I rather push weight than be pushin’ up flowers,” G Count spits on the song’s hook. The mixtape’s title track carries on the same theme, telling the tale of a once-successful hustler striving to get back on his feet. The Meek Mill-assisted “Rush Hour” is a definite standout. L.E.P. and the Maybach Music young gun display a natural chemistry with their edgy bars. It isn’t all murderous however; yes “Click Clack” is a gun ode, but it sounds more like a love song similar to how 2Pac approached his classic cut “Me and My Girlfriend.” The sing-along “Closer” is uncompromised but highly relatable to anyone feeling the stress of life. You don’t necessarily need street stripes to feel Count and Moonie’s emotion. Make no mistake, Now or Neva is unapologetically street. But more than bullying bars, it is the varying degrees of pain, desperation and ambition that L.E.P. exhibit that make the tape a winner. Joints to Check For
