Yum! iPhone App Pairs Sustainable Seafood with Recipes and Wines

Image via Blue Ocean Institute FishPhone has been around for years. It’s a way to text a question about seafood to the Blue Ocean Institute to find out what options are sustainable, all while you’re standing in the store isle. But the handy tool has just gotten much fancier, with a new iPhone app that pairs sustainable seafood options with recipes and wines. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Americans Pay Less Gas Taxes Now Than Any Time Since 1975

This USA Today chart shows how Americans are paying less taxes on gas now than at any point since 1993. That’s the last time the gas tax was raised, to 18.4 cents per gallon — and that’s where it’s stayed ever since. By inflation-adjusted dollars, that makes the current gas taxes the lowest Americans have been paying since 1975 Of course, since then cars have grown more efficient, which is certainly a good thing. But now, the average driver pays just $19 for every 1,000 miles driven. And since we now know much more now about … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Thousands of Undiscovered Plants Face Extinction

Image credit: Hans Dekker /Flickr Scientists have estimated that between 5 million and 50 million flowering plant species may be threatened with extinction. The shocking thing about this number is that fewer than 2 million have been discovered. That means millions—and possibly tens-of-millions—of species may vanish from the planet before they are known to science. And these numbers, a new study shows, may be conservative…. The Link Between Record-Breaking Global Heat Waves and Climate Change

Image via Climate Progress Can you say that a particularly massive heatwave — or any single weather event, for that matter — is caused by climate change? Nope. Now, is there a link between a trend of record-breaking hot temperatures over the years and climate change? Indeed. There’s a fine line between the two, and it’s a fine line that makes it tough for the media to successfully discuss the correlation between, say, a miserable heatwave that’s currently sweeping the East Coast and the greater phenomenon of human-caused global warming. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Commuters in Pain and Worsening Traffic Worldwide

Photo via Cory M. Greiner . IBM (yes, the IBM) recently released a global study of traffic, surveying over 8,000 adult drivers in 20 major cities. Perhaps the results are not that surprising – traffic is perceived by drivers as getting worse in the last three years. Thirty percent of those surveyed felt increased stress while 27% reported increased anger. Twenty nine percent reported that traffic harmed their performance in work or school, and 38% reported having cancelled a planned trip due to anticipated traffic. So the two key questions are, wh… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Mark Moffett, Adventures Among Ants

Image credit: Mark Moffett If we never grew up and stopped playing in the dirt, says Mark “Dr. Bugs” Moffett , we’d never lose our fascination with ants. Alas, most of us have lost touch with the insect friends of our childhood. Mark Moffett is one of the world’s leading explorers and a biologist with an acute ant fixation (he did, afterall, get his PhD under E. O. Wilson , the grandaddy of ant scientists). Moffett’s articles and remarkable photographs appear regularly in

Southern California’s Mountain Lions Become International Diplomats

Photo via angel_malachite A decade-long study of Southern California mountain lions by The Nature Conservancy has yielded a new first. A young lion that goes by the handle M53 found a way to cross a human-made barrier that could have international consequences. When M53 managed to successfully cross the US-Mexico boarder, he inadvertently became somewhat of a diplomat for other lions, and is helping scientists at The Nature Conservancy protect the wildlife corridors the animals need to survive. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Green Corners Rewarded for Making a City More Pleasant

Image from Foyle’s This such a delightful idea. The Conservation Foundation has launched its Green Corners Awards which celebrate the unusual, unexpected, witty and beautiful corners of London. The corners have to be green, and do their bit for the birds and insects as well as the passers-by who enjoy them. Anyone can enter and anyone can nominate a green corner. It may be a small plot of land, a roof terrace, a balcony or a window sill.
