Drop Dead Gorgeous Bikes at the Museum of Arts and Design

Dario Pegoretti TreeHugger is into Copenhagenizing, or using bikes as everyday transport in everyday clothes, but that doesn’t mean we can’t lust in our hearts over a beautiful set of wheels. And, the most beautiful wheels in the world are on display at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York right now. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Exploding Whale – A Metaphor For Top Kill, Junk Shot, And All The Rest

Stinking whale on beach. Many cases of dynamite later…blubber rains on humans. This old exploding whale video seems like a good metaphor for the occasional failure of technology to solve to Big Problems like the BP leaker, I wanted first to use that scene in Raiders of the Lost Arc when the bad guys open up the box and all hell breaks loose. But, I can’t post… Read the full story on TreeHugger

His Holiness the Dalai Lama Offers Hope to the Eco-Stressed

Image via: http://www.dalailamany.org/ After attending three days–12 total blissful hours–of His Holiness’ teachings this past weekend in NYC, I’m in a much calmer state. (Is the live broadcast footage of real time oil spill leaving worry lines across your forehead too?) I feel blessed to have received his teachings in the face of what’s been one disaster after another. Without getting into the more “religious” aspect… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Photos: Various, see links below. A Memorial Day Special It’s Memorial Day weekend in the US, a holiday that commemorates the men and women who died while in the military. Self-Healing Concrete Could Mean Longer Life, Less CO2 Emissions

Concrete often cracks due to shrinkage, impact or loading, and then the moisture gets in, corrodes the reinforcing or spalls in freeze-thaw cycles. Michelle Pelletier, a University of Rhode Island master’s degree candidate, has figured out a way to make it “self-healing”, and says this will reduce greenhouse gas emissions. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Underwater Robot Scans for Submerged Oil in Gulf of Mexico (Video)

Photo credit iRobot Scientists are already rushing to determine the environmental impact of the Gulf oil spill, and iRobot is helping with the Seaglider, an unmanned underwater vehicle that has been sent to the ocean floor to prowl for submerged oil. iRobot is known for the Roomba and consumer cleaning robots, but this UUV unfortunately won’t be doing any cleaning. Instead, researchers need to measure the presence of oil trapped underwater, so the Seaglider, which can operate for up to 10 months, was released to find oil and repo… Read the full story on TreeHugger

The Carbonwood Bicycle. Art or Design?

All photos: Craig Wall for Craig Galego Design is about compromise. Art doesn’t know the word. Design needs to respond to vagaries of a mass market. Art is more unfettered — the idea comes first, the audience later. Design acknowledges the dictates of function (even it doesn’t always abide by them). Art bows down only to the altar of form. But as with life, there are rarely black and white absolutes, and sometimes art and design collide. When they do, it is often art that often comes out the stronger of the two. Take, for example, Australian designer Gary Galego’s Carbonwood bike. It is a stunning piece of art. A material co… Read the full story on TreeHugger
