‘American Idol’ Castoff Haeley Vaughn Says Miley Cyrus Is An ‘Icon’

‘I’m a really big fan of Disney and Disney Channel, so hopefully there’s something there that I can work on,’ she says. By Katie Byrne Haeley Vaughn Photo: Fox Haeley Vaughn’s smile was infectious, but her uneven singing left the “American Idol” judges (and fans) frustrated. After her shaky performance of Miley Cyrus’ “The Climb,” Vaughn was eliminated Thursday, along with Jermaine Sellers , John Park and Michelle Delamor. Will the 16-year-old’s country/pop dreams still come true? We talked to the high-schooler from Fort Collins, Colorado, on Friday (March 5) to talk about that and more. Q : What did you think when Kara suggested you take a year to strengthen your vocal skills? A : I kind of agreed with her. I think that more experience and more time working on my vocals would be good. I think experience is always better, especially since I’m only 16 and this is the first big thing that I’ve done ever. I’ve never performed in front of millions of people before; I’ve never even performed in front of 100. I think it’s always good to get more experience and work on the things that I need to work on. Q : The contestants seem to be particularly nervous this year. Is the anxiety level really high? A : The first week was really tough. We were all super nervous and scared and worried about our song choice. The first week, we were all just freaking out and trying to pick the right songs and make sure America would like them. Nerves are always gonna play a huge factor in what we do on the show. Q : Why didn’t you sing any country songs during your first two semifinal performances? A : The songs I chose, I made them kind of pop/country. I wanted to not have to sing Martina McBride every week just because I wanted to be a country artist. When Carrie Underwood was on her season, she didn’t sing only country songs. She was very versatile, and she chose songs of a different genre and she made them fit her country style. And that was my whole thing that I did too. Q : Do you think the judges have been particularly rough this year? A : Simon was definitely really harsh this season. But, I mean, he has reason to be. … Sometimes he should soften the blow a little bit, but that’s Simon Cowell. He’s been like that for nine years. Q : Are you going to go back to school or focus on your career? A : I’m definitely gonna keep working on my career. I’m gonna keep singing. Hopefully, doors will open up for me. I’m a really big fan of Disney and Disney Channel, so hopefully there’s something there that I can work on. I’m just gonna keep working on my career and doing what I love to do. Q : What kind of career do you see yourself having? A : Miley Cyrus is one of my icons. Oh my gosh, I love her…. Country music is definitely my genre, pop/country. And playing my guitar is awesome. Yeah, if I were given the chance to do that, I would definitely jump on it. Q : Have you had a chance to talk to any “American Idol” alumni to get advice? A : I talked to Allison [Iraheta] for a bit when she came and she performed the first week. And she just told me to stay true to who I am and keep doing my thing and keep doing one genre of music and just be really strong and confident. Were you sad to see Haeley go? Do you think she should have performed some more country songs? Let us know below! Drake’s New Single ‘Over’ Is ‘Real Dope,’ According To DJs

‘I love this record,’ DJ Khaled says. By Shaheem Reid Drake Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images Although Drake has had a string of hits on radio and in the club, from his own “Best I Ever Had” to collaborations like “Forever” and “Say Something,” the pressure was on for the first official single from Thank Me Later to deliver. And, judging from the reaction he’s getting from some of hip-hop’s biggest tastemakers, Drizzy has another smash on his hands with “Over.” ” ‘Over’ is real dope,” DJ Statik Selektah said. “He could have chose to run with a soft, candy-coated record, but he didn’t. The beat is crazy. I’m looking forward to his album!” “I love this record,” DJ Khaled told MTV News. “It’s amazing! It’s special! Drake did it again! It’s a hit!” “I think Drake’s record is dope,” said host of MTV2’s “Sucker Free” and Power 105.1 on-air personality DJ Envy. “I know he had a lot of pressure and the world staring at him, but I think he delivered. He did it his way — outside the box. Drake’s song talks about how he’s dealing with his fame since coming on the scene last year. “On a couple of different levels, it’s not what you might think somebody would do,” DJ Green Lantern said. “Its not like, ‘Let me make “Best I Ever Had” Part 2.’ It’s an everybody type of record.” “I put him in the box with Kanye, Jay-Z, Lil Wayne — artists that love the craft,” Envy added. “As I’m listening [to the song], I’m like, ‘Yeah man. It’s dope,” Green Lantern said. “In the sense of the general straight-listener sense, it’s a catchy song. It’s a catchy song that will stick in your mind, be on repeat and connect to people. ‘I’m doing me.’ That was the first part that stuck out to me. The ‘hood is gonna love the ‘I’m doing me. I’m doing me.’ That’s the ‘hood right there.” Green says the record has ‘hood and pop appeal — it’s universal. “As Drake said before, the hipsters and the hood f—s with him, so his single has to be across the board. The Jay Electronica lovers f— with Drake and the Lil Wayne/Gucci Mane lovers f— with Drake, so his single has to go across the board. It’s not a lot of people that could do that. Technically, the beat is different too — it’s a sample. I’m like, ‘This sh– is dope.’ ” Related Artists Drake

For Washington Post Star, Lure of the Red Carpet Trumps the Thrill of Combat [Commitment]

When the Washington Post ‘s Rajiv Chandrasekaran requested an evacuation from his war-zone embed with the Marines in Afghanistan last week for “personal reasons,” military officials thought it sounded serious. But he just needed to go hang out with Matt Damon . Chandrasekaran, an associate editor and star reporter at the Post for his coverage of Iraq and Afghanistan, spent most of February in close quarters with Marines in Marja, Afghanistan, where NATO forces have been mounting a major combat offensive against the Taliban. The action in Marja is a hot story, and embeds with military units in Afghanistan are hard to come by right now—the waiting list currently stands at 56 reporters. But Chandrasekaran asked the Marines to evacuate him from the combat zone last week, citing unspecified “personal reasons.” He was free to leave, of course. But when the military public affairs officers who oversee embeds pointed out that, as per Department of Defense policy, the Post would have to lose its embed slot and Chandrasekaran’s place would go to the next reporter on the waiting list, he raised a stink and demanded that his fellow Post reporter Joshua Partlow be allowed to take his place, a military source in Afghanistan tells Gawker. After some back and forth, the DOD relented and allowed Chandrasekaran to leave without giving up the Post ‘s position. So why all the tsuris ? The “personal reason” that Chandrasekaran needed out of Marja, it turns out, was so he could attend the New York premiere of The Green Zone , the new Matt Damon film based on Chandrasekaran’s 2006 book Life in the Emerald City . Chandrasekaran’s last byline from Marja appeared on February 23 , and here he is at the premiere on February 25. “I had a number of reasons for needing to come back,” Chandrasekaran told Gawker. “Certainly attending the premiere of a movie based on a book that I wrote was among them. Unfortunately, there was a scheduling conflict and I had to leave Afghanistan when I did.” But Chandrasekaran never told the military officials who bent the rules for him and his paper why he needed the special treatment, and at least one of them was under the impression that it was some sort of family emergency. “I didn’t go into my reasons for needing to leave,” he said, “but I didn’t keep anything from them, and I certainly did not at any point say that there was a family emergency. They evaluated our request and they made their decision. They have their usual procedures, but I believe the public affairs staff recognizes that they’d like to have certain large news organizations covering significant military operations. That includes the Washington Post and others.” (Someone should tell Chandrasekaran that his boss thinks the ” Washington Post is not a national news organization of record serving a large general audience .”) Other reporters who’ve had to leave the combat zone in Marja—presumably for less lofty reasons than attending a movie premiere—haven’t gotten the same indulgence from military officials. National Public Radio’s Soraya Sarhaddi Nelson unexpectedly had to leave the front lines last month, and wasn’t able to immediately sub in her replacement Corey Flintoff, who is currently cooling his heels at a Marine base in Helmand province awaiting a slot and doesn’t expect to see combat until next week. ‘Growing Pains’ Actor Andrew Koenig Reportedly Found Dead

His body was found in a Vancouver park on Thursday afternoon, according to CNN. By Larry Carroll Andrew Koenig Photo: IMDB More than a week after “Growing Pains” actor Andrew Koenig went missing, his body has been found in Vancouver, CNN is reporting. An unnamed source, who reportedly spoke to Koenig’s father, told CNN that the body found in Vancouver’s Stanley Park on Thursday (February 25) at around noon is the 41-year-old. A news conference is expected for later Thursday, and various reports are saying that his parents — including “Star Trek” icon Walter Koenig — may attend. Fans, media and authorities alike had all come together over the last week in search of Koenig, who vanished on Valentine’s Day and then missed a flight home to Los Angeles two days later. Reports later leaked that Vancouver police classified the actor as being “despondent” upon his disappearance , that he had suffered from depression, and had mailed a letter to his father before vanishing that gave the family cause for concern. As friends and family feared the worst, his Hollywood peers, including Alyssa Milano, Kevin Smith, Alyson Hannigan and Sarah Silverman, all used Twitter to voice concern and ask for help locating the actor. Joshua Andrew Koenig was born August 17, 1968, and worked as an actor, film director, editor and writer. He was best known for playing troublemaking teen Richard “Boner” Stabone on the ABC sitcom “Growing Pains,” starring Kirk Cameron — who sent out his own desperate plea for Koenig’s safe reappearance recently. In the years since the hit sitcom went off the air, Koenig had a small role on “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,” voiced the Joker in a fan film called “Batman: Dead End” and wrote and directed the 2004 short film “Woman in a Green Dress.” If the reports are true, Koenig’s last professional work is believed to be alongside “Twilight” star Jackson Rathbone in the experimental indie film “DaZe: Vol. Too – NonSeNse.”

Seth Green Gets Pussy of the Day

Whenever I see Seth Green with his Fiance, I laugh at the fact that this red haired troll of a human can get fucking pussy. Partially because it was not that long ago that when people had little midget red-headed babies, they assumed they were sent from fucking the devil so they would leave them in the woods to fend for themselves, I saw Willow, I know how shit went down….but also because I know she’s not with him cuz she’s turned on by him or because she’s a Buffy or Austin Powers even because he’s so funny or cool, cuz she could just be friends with him if that was the case, and I’m sure he’s desperate for friends, thanks to being really fucking annoying…she’s with him cuz she has convinced herself that it will bring her the good life, give her exposure and it’s amazing that you can’t get laid, but this fucker can. Good times… Pics via PacificCoastNews
