Whitney Houston ‘Prepared’ Monica For Her Life In Music

‘My great-grandchildren will know exactly who Whitney Houston is,’ 31-year-old New Life singer tells MTV News. By Rob Markman Monica Photo: MTV News Monica and the late Whitney Houston shared a special bond. Not only did the fallen pop icon influence Monica, she also mentored her from a very young age. “Losing somebody that you idolize is one thing, but losing a friend is another thing,” Monica told MTV News during an April 10 interview. “I look back over many, many years of my life, and Whitney wasn’t the type of person that would call and ask if I was OK; she would actually fly to me. She would come looking for me, she would sit with me. “She prepared me and always reminded me to never lose sight of who I was, and I think she could be a testament to that because of what she experienced,” she continued. “It’s hard on a daily basis, especially when I’m thinking about her.” It’s been almost three months since Houston passed away after accidentally drowning in a bathtub in her Los Angeles hotel room. While the wounds are still fresh, Monica marches on. The 31-year-old singer just dropped her seventh solo album, New Life, and has been singing Houston’s songs since the very beginning of her career. In March, Monica partnered with Brandy in Atlanta, and together they sang touching Whitney covers. It was far from the first time they paid homage to her. “I guess I get through the tributes for Nippy because I knew how much she enjoyed them,” Monica explained. “I didn’t just start doing tributes to her: I was signed at 11 years old singing ‘The Greatest Love of All.’ ” While on the road with Trey Songz during his 2010 Passion, Pain & Pleasure Tour , Monica would honor her idol every night, and Houston was alive to see it. “I would put on a gown and do a full-out salute to her from top to bottom and sing,” she said. “She got a kick out of that.” Though Whitney’s death has been difficult for Monica, the spirited singer takes comfort in knowing that her friend and teacher left a legacy that will transcend generations. “I really appreciate the fact that for almost three decades she gave us music that will last,” she said. “My grandchildren will know exactly who she is; my great-grandchildren will know exactly who Whitney Houston is.” Share your favorite Whitney Houston memory in the comments below. Rick Ross Still Going For Broke With Rich Forever Mixtape

‘I feel for you to be rich forever, you have to be rich with ideas,’ Rozay tells Mixtape Daily of his 2012 standout. By Rob Markman Rick Ross Photo: MTV News Main Pick Headliner : Rick Ross, DJ Scream, Shaheem Reid Representing : Miami, Florida Mixtape : Rich Forever Real Spit : Sometimes differentiating between a mixtape and an album can be difficult, especially when a mixtape is crafted with such care, like Rick Ross ‘ Rich Forever . The 19-song opus dropped at the top of the year as an appetizer for Rozay’s upcoming God Forgives, I Don’t LP. But almost four months later, it is clear that the Maybach Music Boss has created a tape that will transcend the shelf life of most free Internet downloads. “As far as the title of the mixtape goes, it’s Rich Forever. It’s a lyric that I’ve used in the past, several times. Not only that, I really believe it,” MTV’s most recent Hottest MC in the Game crown holder told Mixtape Daily. “I feel for you to be rich forever, you have to be rich with ideas, rich with concepts, rich with thoughts; to me that’s what being rich forever is.” Rozay didn’t just rely on his own wealth, he recruited a flock of well-to-do friends like Diddy, Nas, John Legend, Birdman and Kelly Rowland to contribute. “Stay Schemin’,” which features Drake and French Montana, has crossed over and made a dent on Billboard ‘s R&B Chart , so far peaking at #49. While “Schemin’ ” may be the most identifiable song off of Rich Forever, the tape is filled with a number of standouts. “Ring Ring” with Future is a playful ode to the ladies, and on “Holy Ghost,” Diddy prays to God to keep his bank account intact while Rozay denounces the devil and other speed bumps on his road to riches. “Yella Diamonds” is another pledge to money, this time featuring Cash Money CEO Birdman. “My dough be shinin’ like it’s yella diamonds,” Ross raps on the song’s rambunctious hook. The Bawse keeps things lively but does slow it down on the tape’s title track. With R&B crooner John Legend in tow, Ross runs down his career in retrospect. “Def Jam on my heels, should I sign to it?/ Million-dollar advance for me to rhyme fluent/ Every day I’m hustlin’ on every corner boomin’/ Back of the Phantom, I couldn’t fathom/ I was such a student,” he spits about the circumstances leading up to his 2006 debut album Port of Miami. Ross has grown significantly in the six years since dropping his first LP, and Rich Forever more than proves it. No longer a hustler on the come-up, Rick Ross now runs the game with enough riches to last him a lifetime. Joints to Check For

Megan Fox Is Pregnant

‘Transformers’ actress expecting her first child with husband Brian Austin Green. By Kara Warner Megan Fox and Brian Austin Green Photo: Todd Williamson/ Getty Images Although the tabloid media has been obsessing over Megan Fox for years — ever since she made her blockbuster debut in the 2007 moneymaker “Transformers” — they’ll have a whole new reason to pay close attention to the star for the next few months: The 25-year-old is reportedly pregnant with her first child. According to E! Online , Fox is expecting a bundle of joy with husband Brian Austin Green. The new addition to their family will be the second child for Green, who also has a 10-year-old son, Kassius, with ex Vanessa Marcil. MTV News reached out to Fox’s reps for comment but have yet to receive confirmation. The news might not come as a surprise to the folks over at Star magazine, who initially broke the story about Fox’s pregnancy in late March via a source close to the couple. “They just found out and are incredibly excited,” a source told Star at the time. “Megan has become a great stepmom, and Brian knows she’ll be wonderful with the baby.” The “Friends With Kids” star has also stated publicly that she is eager to become a mother. “I want at least two, probably three kids,” the actress said in a recent interview with Cosmopolitan magazine. “I’ve always been maternal.” Fox and Green met while filming the sitcom “Hope and Faith” back in 2004 and the pair were married in Hawaii in June 2010. The actress has said their relationship works because they are best friends. “I feel like I’m with my best friend,” she told MTV News about Green . “I’ve been with him for so long, so it feels natural and comfortable.” Share your well-wishes for the couple in the comments! N.O.R.E. Gets Wale And Waka Flocka Hooked On His Latest Mixtape Drug

‘I wanted to pick a wild name,’ N.O.R.E. tells Mixtape Daily of his new Crack on Steroids tape. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Adam Murphy N.O.R.E. Photo: MTV News Main Pick Headliners : N.O.R.E. and DJ Green Lantern Representing : Queens, New York Mixtape : Crack on Steroids Real Spit : The Super Thug is back at it again. Almost a year after dropping his N.O.R.E.aster EP, Noreaga returns with the drug-induced Crack on Steroids. “I wanted to pick a wild name so when people look at it, they’ll say, ‘What the hell is that?’ ” N.O.R.E. told Mixtape Daily about his latest release. Picking up where he left off last year with his street single “Nore Shot Somebody,” the C-N-N rapper keeps things “Grimey” on the tape-opening “Kenny Powers.” It’s not exactly an ode to the popular HBO comedy ; instead, N.O. uses Danny McBride’s fictional character as a thinly veiled reference to his distinct brand of cocaine. While partner-in-rhyme Capone was locked up in the late 1990s, N.O.R.E. proved he could hold things down as a soloist, crafting a number of hits like “Super Thug” and “Grimey.” On C.O.S., however, the Queens, New York, MC invites a number of his rap friends to the party. RZA shows up for “Hare Krishna” and Game, Busta Rhymes and Waka Flocka Flame pitch in on the Chris Brown-sampling “Lehhhgooo.” On the latter, producer Charli Brown flips Breezy’s opening ad lib from “Look at Me Now” and turns it into a catchy chorus. Wale also jumps on “Get Her” and will.i.am channels Slick Rick on “We Ain’t,” then Nore’s latest signee, Glacierz, proves she can hang with the fellas and delivers a standout verse on “War Song.” For all his guest spots, though, N.O.R.E. maintains his vibe throughout the tape — not that we expected anything less. Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame Welcomes Guns N’ Roses, Red Hot Chili Peppers

Beastie Boys were also inducted on a night when Guns singer Axl Rose refused to attend. By Gil Kaufman Former Guns N’ Roses members Matt Sorum, Duff McKagan, Slash and Steven Adler attend the 2012 Rock And Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony Photo: Getty Images If it’s the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, then drama is as much a prerequisite as loud guitars, receding hairlines and a night-ending all-star jam on a golden oldie. Saturday night’s 27th edition was no exception according to reports, with as much intrigue as a telenovela, as well as some genuinely peaceful Southern California bro-downage, irreverent induction speeches and fresh spots in the Hall for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Beastie Boys, The Faces, Freddie King, Laura Nyro and Guns N’ Roses . The spotlight, of course, was on the famously fractured band of battling former brothers in GNR. Lead singer and sole remaining original member Axl Rose loudly decried the institution in a scathing letter
earlier in the week, saying he would not attend and intimating that anyone who did was a fraud. That was just fine for former guitarist Slash and bassist Duff McKagan, who made the most of the honor, while, ahem, never once mentioning Rose. “I don’t know that it matters who’s here tonight, because it’s about the music that these bands played,” said McKagan, who jammed a short time later on three songs with a pseudo-GNR made up of Slash, former Guns guitarist Gilby Clarke and drummers Steven Adler and Matt Sorum and Alter Bridge singer Myles Kennedy. It was the first time in nearly 20 years that Slash, McKagan and Adler had performed together and according to reports there were little signs of rust on the classics “Sweet Child O’ Mine” and “Paradise City.” In his induction speech at the Cleveland ceremony, Green Day singer Billie Joe Armstrong dubbed Guns’ 1987 album, Appetite for Destruction , “the best debut album in the history of rock and roll … every song hits hard. It takes you ion a trip to the seedy world of Los Angeles. The thing that set them apart from everyone else was guts.” And after ticking off the strengths of all the members of the group, he cheekily added, “Let’s see, who am I missing?” The latter set off yet another chorus of four-letter catcalls from the 7,400 in attendance, which inspired Armstrong to add, “Shut up. He [Rose] was the greatest frontman to ever step in front of a microphone.” Rose wasn’t the only star missing. Rod Stewart was not on hand to celebrate with the Faces/Small Faces because he was reportedly sick with the flu and Beastie Boys member Adam Yauch was absent because of ongoing recovery from cancer treatment. B Boys member Mike D made up for it, giving a shout-out to the trio’s hometown for inspiration. “Thank you, New York City, for basically raising us and giving us all the music we love and grew up on,” said D, who was on hand along with bandmate Ad-Rock to celebrate becoming only the third hip-hop act in the Hall. During a later performance, Kid Rock, Travie McCoy and the Roots’ Black Thought joined the duo for a medley of their classics, including “Sabotage.” Also inducted were Donovan, blues guitarist Freddie King, Laura Nyro, music exec Don Kirshner and a number of sidemen and backup musicians. Accepting their award from comedian Chris Rock, Red Hot Chili Peppers singer Anthony Kiedis said it felt a bit weird to join such a hallowed hall when his band is still out on the road promoting new music. “We’re going somewhere,” he said. “How can we stop and take an award when really we’re just halfway there?” The Peppers later performed with a triple-drummer line-up that included two former skins pounders, Jack Irons and Cliff Martinez. The five-plus hour ceremony will be boiled down to a two-and-a-half hour special for a May 5 HBO broadcast. Related Artists Guns N’ Roses Red Hot Chili Peppers Beastie Boys

Cee Lo Green Confirms Christina Aguilera Duet

‘Voice’ coaches recording track for Aguilera’s upcoming album. By John Mitchell Christina Aguilera and Cee Lo Photo: Gregg DeGuire/ Getty Images We already know Christina Aguilera is hard at work on her upcoming album, and now we have confirmation that at least one of her fellow “The Voice” coaches will appear on the still-untitled set, due out later this year. Talking to Billboard , Cee Lo Green revealed that he is working on a track with Aguilera, but declined to give much information about the song itself — other than it is happening and it is at least partly recorded. “It’s a song for her album. I won’t disclose the title, because it could possibly be a working title,” Green said. “We’ve talked about it amongst ourselves, and I’m gonna go in on it and work it out. It’ll be the second song we’ve done.” The first song they recorded together was the demo “Nasty,” which was recorded for but ultimately not included on the soundtrack to Aguilera’s film “Burlesque.” “I just gotta get in there and … splash,” Green continued, implying that Aguilera already recorded her vocal for the unnamed track. After a recent “Voice” taping, Aguilera told the show’s social-media correspondent Christina Milian that she has been hitting the studio in whatever free time she can find in her busy schedule with the TV hit. “I started [the album] whenever I started this show, and then [the show] kind of took off into this big thing,” Aguilera explained. “So, the show used to be a side project and kind of turned into a bigger time-fulfilling, dedicated project for me.” The pop star, who appeared on Maroon 5’s #1 hit “Moves Like Jagger” last year, is working with a variety of producers and songwriters on the effort. “It’s just filled with fun and excitement, and it’s gonna come out later this year,” Aguilera added. “I’m very, very excited to share it with my fans, finally.” Who would you like to hear Christina collaborate with on her new album? Far East Movement Congratulate Tokio Hotel On Musical March Madness

‘If you die tomorrow, at least you won today,’ Kev Nish says, making a reference to Far East’s collaboration with TH frontman Bill Kaulitz. By James Montgomery Far East Movement Photo: MTV News Tokio Hotel ‘s first 24 hours as Musical March Madness champions has already included some spirited back-and-forth between their Aliens and Green Day’s rabid fanbase (check the comments of our title game recap for proof), a rather gracious acceptance speech from the Brothers Kaulitz, and now, a special shout-out from their pals in the Far East Movement. Yes, when MTV News caught up with the fast-rising hitmakers on Wednesday, they were quick to praise Tokio Hotel for their MMM win … and pimp their upcoming collaboration with Bill Kaulitz, too. “Big congrats to Tokio Hotel, Bill Kaulitz and crew!” Far East’s Kev Nish said. “If you die tomorrow, at least you won today.” See what he did there? For the uninitiated, “If I Die Tomorrow” is a song on Far East’s upcoming Dirty Bass album, which features collabos with the likes of Justin Bieber, LMFAO’s Redfoo and, of course, Kaulitz. And if featuring a member of TH on a track seems a bit off, well, let’s let Nish explain how the whole thing came to be. “When we first signed to Cherrytree [Records], we went on the website and see who’s on the roster … how do you pick what label to go to, you know?” he said. “And we saw Tokio Hotel, and we were like ‘Yo, this band is wild.’ We were on a bus watching them on the MTV Europe Awards, winning, and we were like, ‘We need to do a song with those dudes.’ “So we got in with Bill Kaulitz and we just wanted to do a song about losing yourself, about possibly losing your mind, because you might die the next day,” he continued. “It’s called ‘If I Die Tomorrow,’ and it’s Bill Kaulitz and his incredible tone in our dirty bass world … and that’s kind of where dirty bass is going: unexpected collaborations.” And given Tokio Hotel’s big MMM win, we think this may be the first of many Kaulitz collaborations. After all, when you’re on top, everyone wants a piece of you. Tokio Hotel Call Musical March Madness Championship ‘Totally Unexpected’

‘That’s just incredible, thank you so much for your support,’ frontman Bill Kaulitz says in message to fans. By James Montgomery Tokio Hotel’s Bill Kaulitz Photo: MTV News One day after upsetting Green Day and shocking the world in MTV’s Musical March Madness championship game, Tokio Hotel are still basking in their post-title glow — and they want to share that happiness with their fans. TH’s Bill and Tom Kaulitz have just released a special video message to their Aliens around the world, thanking them for all their support and for helping guide them to the 2012 MMM championship. “Hey, Aliens! We just heard we won MTV’s Musical March Madness 2012. … That’s just incredible, thank you so much for your support, and it’s unbelievable,” frontman Bill said in the message. “I know it’s been really, really hard because there’s been so many great bands nominated … totally unexpected.” Bill’s brother Tom then chimed in — from behind the wheel of what appears to be a rather large SUV (championship swag!) — with a parting shot that’s sure to anger plenty of fans of those other great bands, accusing them of attempting to bend the rules to bring Tokio Hotel down. But hey, he’s a champ now, and he can pretty much do whatever he wants. “And they tried to cheat!” Tom joked. “And they tried to cheat,” Bill laughed. “Thank you guys so much for voting! And we are so proud to have you guys, and we want to thank you for your patience. I know you’re waiting for the new record and we’re working on it really hard and we hope to see you guys pretty soon. Thank you so much — we’re really proud of you.” Unlike what 2010 MMM champs Coheed and Cambria did in their acceptance speech — 2011 champions Green Day didn’t feel like making one, btw — Bill signed off by blowing a kiss to the camera (his brother flashed the peace sign) and giving one last “thank you” to the TH fans for their undying dedication. And with that, the coronation was complete: Tokio Hotel reign supreme as MMM champs, and until someone knocks them off the throne in next year’s tournament, well, let’s just say we could be seeing a whole lot more kisses being blown. It’s apparently the European way to celebrate a championship title. Check out the results from this year’s tournament in the MTV Musical March Madness interactive bracket!
