On August 28, the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards will be handed out. While MTV selects winners arbitrarily, and the irony of a network that ceased playing music videos years ago still holding an award show for them always kills us, there’s simply no denying this event is always a fun, outrageous time. With these big-name stars on hand, next month’s show should be no different. Yeezy performs a bombastic headlining set on Saturday in New Orleans. By Rebecca Thomas Kanye West performs at the 2011 Essence Fest on Saturday Photo: Erika Goldring/Getty Images NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana — Early on in Kanye West ‘s headlining set at the 2011 Essence Music Festival on Saturday Night, the Chicago MC stood on a raised platform suspended high above the cheering crowd. As he spit “Dark Fantasy,” the hook “Can we get much higher?” seemed a particularly apt way to describe not only his literal skyward stance at the New Orleans Superdome , but also what was to come that night. Yeezy was already knee-deep into career-defining classics like “Jesus Walks” “Can’t Tell Me Nothing” and “Diamonds are Forever,” when he told the elated NOLA fest he was “just getting started.” Rocking a white blazer, topped by a thick tangle of gold chains, and a pair of jeans and sneakers, the 34-year-old rapper bounded across the stage like a hyperactive teen, but there was no mistaking that West is a megastar, the “college dropout” who has more than made G.O.O.D. on his childhood dreams. As a small army of classical dancers — dressed in a variation of the phoenix costume worn by Selita Ebanks’ bird in West’s short film “Runaway” — flanked him, Kanye launched into a bombastic rendition of “Power”; “Devil in a New Dress” and “Hell of a Life” followed as ‘Ye tucked into singles and cuts from last year’s platinum-plus opus My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Performing to a massive audience that came to its feet (and stayed there all night) to the strains of ‘Ye and Jay-Z’s “H.A.M.,” the Chi-town MC with a Nas flow touched on his recent scandals, explaining that he stopped granting press interviews after taking lashings from media and bloggers. But he wasn’t all rebellious rapper: He danced, sang along and laughed his way through an old-school medley of personally influential music, and the playlist jumped from Al Green to ’90s soul groups like Jodeci and Shai. And West also emphasized that he knew who had held him down when, as he laughed, he “had a little too much too drink” before storming the MTV VMA stage back in 2009. Yeezy repeatedly thanked the predominantly African-American crowd for standing by him before going on to a stirring, church-tinged rendition of “Gold Digger.” The songs felt big and anthemic; the stage and stands, for instance, were bathed in lights and lasers for “All of the Lights” and “Stronger,” respectively. As he bounced back and forth between hits from his discography, including his College Dropout debut and his introspective, Auto-Tuned 808s & Heartbreak, the weight of West’s musical success was apparent. If there is a handbook for how to headline an expansive show, West should write it. Concertgoers appeared awestruck at the sheer spectacle and scale of the show, mouths gaping when they weren’t shouting lyrics back at the energetic MC. For the finale “Act 3” (a title card projected onto oversize screens flashed the show’s three-part progression), a billowing white tent was spread across the stage. In cocoon-like fashion, the dancers re-emerged in black tutus; West clad in his signature red suit. As the rapper knocked out the mournful, tinkling opener of “Runaway” on his MPC machine, the ballerinas circled and Pusha T turned up for his verse. Still, as large and loud as the show felt, Yeezy’s closing was as subtle. After rapping a heartfelt “Hey Mama” on his knees, with a nod to his late mother, Donda West , the star and his band, dancers and DJ took a ballet-company-style bow and walked offstage as the stadium lights went up. John West – Right Now Whenever a new artist gets signed to a label and we love the first single, we always hold our breath for single number two. Because it could go either way. In this case, we’re still loving John West. (Shout out to Vibe.com on premiering this joint) DJ Khaled ft. Fabolous, Mary J. Blige & Jadakiss – It Aint Over Til It’s Over Khaled brought back the Mary J. Blige we LOVE on this joint. The “P.S.K. What Does It Mean?” sample with Fabolous and Jadakiss patterning their delivery after the original solidify this joint as a summer classic. Remember we said that when your local radio station starts playing this joint 15 times a day. Bertell – Simply Beautiful Newcomer Bertell takes a crack at remaking this often sampled Al Green classic. And the young man does Reverend Al proud. If you’re a Mary J. Blige fan, you’ll remember it as the foundation of her song “PMS” from the “No More Drama” album. If you’re a fan of the magic that Kanye West and Talib Kweli make together, than you’ll remember the sample from “Good To You” off of the “Quality” album. Ladies, click here , watch Bertell, pretend he’s singing to you. Wale – That Way feat. Jeremih & Rick Ross This song just hit the radio in some markets, even though it’s been online for about a month now. But we felt it necessary to tell Wale that THIS is what he needs to do more of. Y’all pass the word along, please. Tabi Bonney – Parachute Here’s another example of those easy rap joints you can just throw in a playlist and bump effortlessly. The kinda song that just blends into whatever you’re doing… but in a good way.
‘Glee,’ ‘Harry Potter,’ Selena Gomez, Taylor Swift also up for awards. By Jocelyn Vena Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson in “Eclipse” Photo: Summit “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” is the undeniable lead contender at this year’s Teen Choice Awards. The flick received 12 nods, including Choice Movie: Sci-Fi/Fantasy, Choice Movie Actor: Sci-Fi/Fantasy for both Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner and Choice Movie Actress: Sci-Fi/Fantasy for Kristen Stewart . The 2011 BET awards went down last night, Sunday June 26 at the Shrine auditorium in LA. Lets just say the greatest show on earth is still at the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circus. Funny man Kevin Hart did his thing but even he could not save the BET Awards from becoming the EBT Awards. There were too many awkward and funny moments that it was hard for me to chose just a few. There were too many fashion fails and some serious epic fails that went down during the show. I decided to narrow it down to the fails that literally made people either uncomfortable or just with blank stares on their faces. Check out the photos and list below of the EPIC FAILS from the 2011 BET Awards. Cherrelle & Alexander O’Neal performing “Saturday Love” – Why would BET pull Alexander O’Neal on stage to perform straight from Dr. Drew’s Rehab center. This performance was very crack-ish. Where are his teeth? Rocsi Diaz all purpose dress – Is it just me, or was Rocsi dressed like she was the star of Lion King on ice. I don’t know but everyone on twitter said she got the fit from Wet Seal. Maybe they gave her some free wears for the promo. Busta Rhymes brain vest – Now Busta is known for wearing some weird fits and last night was not unusual. Busta went rap Lady Gaga on us yesterday wearing a brain vest in the audience and becoming a human accordion during his performance with Chris Brown. Look at him now. Chris Brown Onesie Tuxedo – Yeah Chris Brown made the list again. Breezy played himself two times over when he joined Big Sean on stage wearing a onesie tuxedo. Chris Brown’s BET Awards fits were just awful. And what was he doing on that damn bike?? Lil Wayne American Flag boxers and One Sock – Weezy F. clearly does whatever he wants to do and during his “I’m On One” performance with DJ Khaled, Drake and Rick Ross Weezy skipped around the stage wearing American flag boxers and one black and white checker sock. Cee-Lo Green dressed as Patti LaBelle and cussing – Cee-Lo Green literally came out dressed like Patti Labelle. I mean even down to her permed out spike hair. You can tell Patti was loving it! Things went a bit south when The Dungeon Family member started cussing up a storm. BET didn’t catch any of the cuss words and I don’t think they intended on it. Viewers Choice Award – Tiffany Greene, a big Nicki Minaj fan, was chosen to give out the BET Viewers Choice Award. Things went left when the tablet said Chris Brown but the teleprompter said Rihanna. Then Drake ended up winning the award. However, at the end of the show Kevin Hart revealed that the winner really was Chris Brown. Once again the EBT awards know how to start some mess to keep their ratings up. Trey Songz drooling and slurping on Kelly Rowland’s neck – Trey Songz and Kelly Rowland just may have had one of the hottest performances of the night . I know I am not the only one who caught how Trey Songz had become a perverted old man at the end of the performance, trying to nibble on Kelly Rowland’s neck as they went down. Diggy Simmons dance number – I did not know Diggy Simmons had big plans to become the rapping Chris Brown. We were all hype about Diggy coming into the rap game because he could actually flow. Now he just totally put himself into the category of being a popcorn bubble gum artist. Nicki Minaj pretending she had competition – Nicki Minaj accepted her award and tried to deliver a speech pretending there was competition in the female rap category. The audience did not buy it one bit. They broke out into laughter after Nicki started her speech off with “Wow, I can’t believe I won.” Recent Post: Free’s Booty Becomes Trending Topic After BET Awards [PHOTO] 2011 BET Awards Performances [VIDEO]
So we’re basically agreed that Hollyweird doesn’t have any more original ideas anymore, right? So they’re going to go ahead and just keep making sequels until nobody ever makes a new movie any more. Despite the fact that Green Lantern cost $300 million to make and it only earned $53 million in its first weekend, Warner Bros. are down to crank out sequel. We hope they decide to make a sequel that doesn’t…um…fall short of critics’ expectations like the first one did. Meanwhile, the good folks over at Pixar are making yet another Toy Story movie. That’s right, Woody, Buzz Lightyear and the crew just won’t die. Expect your kids to be tugging on your leg to watch the fourth flick when it drops. Will you be planning on seeing any of these movies when they come out? Let us know.

Cee Lo Green, Tracy Morgan and Blake Shelton have also issued mea culpas recently for seemingly homophobic comments. By Gil Kaufman Chris Brown Photo: Jason Kempin/ WireImage On Wednesday, Chris Brown became the latest celebrity to apologize to the LGBT community for using a gay slur in anger. The singer issued a Twitter mea culpa for an incident on Tuesday in which he lashed out at several photographers in Los Angeles whom he believed had tipped off parking-enforcement officers to his illegally parked car, saying, “Y’all n—as is weak. Did you call them to try and film me? Y’all n—as is gay!” The comments came just days after comedian Tracy Morgan met with LGBT youth in New York following his anti-gay rant during a recent stand-up appearance, which earned the “30 Rock” star widespread scorn from the gay community for his seeming advocacy of violence against gay youth. The Human Rights Campaign told TMZ that “invoking words to demean gay Americans is just plain unacceptable … Brown should know better.” Brown, who has made outrageous digital comments before — including a homophobic attack on former B2K singer Raz B in December — only to ask forgiveness for them a short time later, issued an apology on Twitter on Wednesday night, writing, “I have total respect for Gay community and my intention was not to insult anyone in it.” A spokesperson for Brown could not be reached for comment at press time. Herndon Graddick, senior director of programs for GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation), told MTV News that while it may seem like this kind of casual homophobia is on the rise, what we’re seeing might simply be a result of the increasingly interconnected nature of our society. “People are being filmed while getting a parking ticket and commenting on Twitter and there’s more opportunity for the things celebrities to say to reach the public,” he said. “But I think celebrities and people in the public eye are also increasingly cognizant that they have to respect all of their fans, and when things happen, they have an interest in correcting that behavior.” Brown is certainly not alone in using words that may hurt some of his fans. Two members of the celebrity judging panel on NBC’s hit reality singing show “The Voice” have also issued apologies recently for using anti-gay slurs. After a performance with Rihanna in Minneapolis last week, Cee Lo Green posted a Twitter response to a negative review by critic Andrea Swensson, writing, “I respect your criticism, but be fair! People enjoyed last night! I’m guessing you’re gay? And my masculinity offended you? Well f— you!” After the rant went viral, Green issued a public apology, telling Us Weekly, “I most certainly am not harboring any sort of negative feeling toward the gay community. I don’t have an opinion on people with different religious, sexual or political preferences,” said Green, who added that he assumed the critic would understand that his comments were “all in good fun” and that he didn’t mean any harm. “I’m one of the most liberal artists that I think you will ever meet, and I pride myself on that. Two of the remaining members that I have on my team on ‘The Voice’ are proud and outspokenly gay. We just did a team performance of ‘Everyday People,’ and I picked that song for us to do specifically to highlight how we can get along even though we’re so different.” Similarly, fellow judge Blake Shelton landed in hot water last month when he tweeted the comment, “Re-writing my fav Shania Twain song … Any man that tries touching my behind he’s gonna be a beaten, bleedin’, heaving kind of guy.” The original lyrics are, “Any man of mine better walk the line/ Better show me a teasin’, squeezin’, pleasin’ kinda time.” GLAAD weighed in, suggesting that Shelton’s comments sounded like a threat against any man who took a pass at him and demanded an apology. Shelton quickly recanted in a series of tweets, writing, “Hey y’all allow me to seriously apologize for the misunderstanding with the whole re-write on the Shania song last night … It honestly wasn’t even meant that way… I now know that [there] are people out there waiting to jump at everything I say on here or anywhere … But when it comes to gay/lesbian rights or just feelings … I love everybody. So go look for a real villain and leave me out of it!!!” Herndon said that with an American public that is more supportive of gay people than ever, not to mention more aware of the impact of harmful language, for better or worse, celebrities are often looked to to set the standard for acceptable behavior. “I think that language can be homophobic and people can as well,” he said. “I’m not going to judge the intent of what [Brown] was saying; he was clearly pissed about a parking ticket. But his intent is less important than the actual impact. When people hear other people use the kind of language that makes ‘gay’ equivalent to ‘bad,’ it communicates a message, and it’s important that people are aware of that. I don’t think every time anyone has spoken those words their personal viewpoint is homophobic, but the impact can be damaging.” The string of public anti-gay slurs has also included a number of sports figures, such as Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant, who was fined $100,000 for yelling anti-gay slurs at a referee in April, and Chicago Bulls’ Joakim Noah, who was fined $50,000 in May for directing an anti-gay slur at a fan during game three of the Eastern Conference Finals. Share your thoughts on the recent celebrity anti-gay slurs in the comments. Related Artists Chris Brown Cee Lo Green
