NBC Names Ground Zero Mosque Developer a ‘Person of the Year’

NBC has announced that it has named the developer of the controversial Islamic prayer center near Ground Zero, Sharif el-Gamal, one of the network’s “People of the Year.” El-Gamal will sit down for an interview with NBC’s Matt Lauer on Thanksgiving night. The prayer center, known as Park51, has sparked outrage and massive protests from people who say that building a mosque so close to the site of the World Trade Center attacks is disrespectful to 9/11 victims and their families. NBC’s previous coverage of Park51 has sometimes come off as insensitive to the people who object to the prayer center’s construction. Last August, NBC anchor Mika Brzezinski referred to Park51 opponents as people “who don’t care about the Constitution.” read more

FNC Cites MRC, NewsBusters on Media Indicting America as Islamophobic

On Saturday’s Fox News Watch, host Jon Scott picked up on a recent “Media Reality Check” report by the Media Research Center – parent organization to NewsBusters – titled “Smearing America as Islamophobic,” which documented that the mainstream media have portrayed America as Islamophobic because of public opposition to the Ground Zero mosque. Scott: “The Media Research Center, Jim, released a study this week titled ‘Smearing America as Islamophobic.’ The overall thrust is that networks like NBC, CBS, ABC are calling these protests at Ground Zero, protests over the mosque, Islamophobia. Do they have a point?’” After panel member Jim Pinkerton of the New America Foundation voiced his agreement with the MRC’s findings, Scott seemed to pick up on another MRC/NewsBusters item as he quoted ABC’s Christiane Amanpour from last week’s This Week show when she portrayed America as Islamophobic. Scott: “Let me read you a quote from Christiane Amanpour… At the top of her show on Sunday, she noted the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks that had just passed, and she said, ‘She said nine years later, the growing hostility toward Muslim-Americans. Not since 9/11 has the country seen such anti-Muslim fervor,’ and said, ‘Muslim-Americans are feeling vulnerable.’ Where’s her proof?” Below is a transcript of the relevant portion of the Saturday, September 18, Fox News Watch on FNC: JON SCOTT: The Media Research Center, Jim, released a study this week titled “Smearing America as Islamophobic.” The overall thrust is that networks like NBC, CBS, ABC are calling these protests at Ground Zero, protests over the mosque, Islamophobia. Do they have a point? JIM PINKERTON: I think they do. I think the facts speak for themselves. I mean, the mere fact that the media would so consciously take the imam’s side in this battle, and every high-minded liberal journalist and columnist in the country says, is obligated to say, “Yes, we must build the mosque,” when the big question is, and I think Judy said this a few weeks ago, there’s no evidence they have the money. Forget the right or wrong of the thing. They’re about 100 million behind where they need to build this thing. SCOTT: Ellis, let me read you a quote from Christiane Amanpour, one of your favorites I’m sure. At the top of her show on Sunday, she noted the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks that had just passed, and she said: “She said nine years later, the growing hostility toward Muslim-Americans. Not since 9/11 has the country seen such anti-Muslim fervor,” and said, “Muslim-Americans are feeling vulnerable.” Where’s her proof?

Michael Moore: McDonald’s at Ground Zero Killed More People Than 9/11 Hijackers

Schlockumentary film producer Michael Moore on Friday said the McDonald’s that’s two blocks from Ground Zero killed more people than the nineteen hijackers involved in the 9/11 attacks. Chatting with Bill Maher on HBO’s “Real Time,” Moore also accused Newt Gingrich and Sarah Palin of being America’s Taliban. “We should start calling them Cleric Gingrich and Mullah Taliban Palin,” said Moore. “Because I think that their level of bigotry is so un-American” (video follows with partial transcript and commentary):  MICHAEL MOORE: Why don’t we have words for people like Gingrich and Palin? You know, because they’re essentially our mullahs, you know, our Taliban. We don’t ever really refer to them as, but we should start calling them Cleric Gingrich and Mullah Taliban Palin, or whatever. See how that, see how that fits. Because I think that their, their level of bigotry is so un-American, and, I just, I just. Hey, how about that McDonald’s two blocks from Ground Zero, Bill? That’s killed, that’s killed more people than the nineteen hijackers. Don’t you love it when folks that are so overweight they’re probably considered obese point fingers at others for their poor eating habits?  Honestly, does this look like a man that should be making McDonald’s jokes:     Michael, people who live in pants the size of tents shouldn’t throw Big Macs!

Newsweek’s Alter Distorts Gingrich’s Ground Zero Mosque Opposition

You can agree or disagree about former Speak of the House Newt Gingrich’s view on the Ground Zero mosque, but is it fair to vilify him with a false characterization of his views? Newsweek columnist Jonathan Alter had a peculiar take on Gingrich’s point of view during a Sept. 13 appearance on Fox Business Network’s “Imus in the Morning.” He expressed his frustrations with the attacks on Islam, as it pertains to public discourse with not only the Ground Zero mosque, but also the idea of people burning Qurans, which has garnered a fair amount of attention from the left-of-center media . “[I]t’s insane,” Alter said. “And what are we supposed to have, a war with a billion people? So, this is out of control. And, it’s kicked off something pretty ugly.” But one of the lynchpins of his frustration were comments from Gingrich , which Alter took some liberties with his interpretation of the former House Speaker’s sentiments. “And when you have people like Newt Gingrich, I think, my big takeaway from this is that he’s just completely destroyed any — the last shred of legitimacy he had to comment about anything. My favorite line by Gingrich is he said, ‘You know, when Saudi Arabia allows us to build churches and synagogues there, then we’ll put mosques in the United States, and until then, other mosques should close, too.” But Gingrich’s statement about the mosque referred specifically to the Ground Zero mosque, not all mosques in the United States. He elaborated, “If the people behind the Cordoba House were serious about religious toleration, they would be imploring the Saudis, as fellow Muslims, to immediately open up Mecca to all and immediately announce their intention to allow non-Muslim houses of worship in the Kingdom.”

Thom Hartmann: Gingrich, Palin, ‘Whole Right-Wing Crazy Train’ Threatens Our Soldiers

On August 31, liberal talk radio host Thom Hartmann complained that the Obama White House needs to “stop taking seriously every feigned outrage of the right” like the Ground Zero mosque. A few minutes later, he unloaded:   [Gingrich is] willing to sell out our country. He’s willing to see Americans die…He’s putting our soldiers at risk. Newt Gingrich, Sarah Palin, the whole right-wing crazy-train bunch of them, Glenn Beck…the right-wing hate machine on…talk radio. They are willing to see…another [terrorist] attack in an American city. In fact, I think, frankly, they would love it ’cause they could blame it on Obama. Why is it that every time conservatives question a radical Muslim imam like the Ground Zero imam, it’s now putting our soldiers at risk?

Again TERROR Pirate Terry Jones holds KORAN hostage: Lists his demands!

It seems “Pastor” Terry Jones is STILL threatening to burn the Koran on 9/11 if his list of demands aren't met. His list may include: No masque on ground zero, four pepperoni pizzas, a case of Pepsi Clear, and a chance to be a contestant on Wipeout. “nobody move or the Koran gets it” said an unnamed man on deck with a parrot. http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/la-naw-koran-burning-20100909,0,6… added by: thelastwheeler

US pastor Terry Jones cancels Koran burning

The pastor of a small US church who wanted to burn copies of the Koran has cancelled his protest. Terry Jones said he was calling off the Florida event after the group behind a planned mosque close to Ground Zero in New York agreed to relocate it. Mr Jones had said the burning would be a stand against terrorism, but his plan was internationally condemned. President Barack Obama had warned Mr Jones the event would be “a recruitment bonanza” for al-Qaeda. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-11255366 added by: littlwarrior

Are Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin Cashing in on 9/11?

Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck are rendezvousing in Alaska this Saturday to commemorate 9/11. The event will likely share some similarities to Beck's “Restoring Honor” rally in DC. But with one important difference: This one costs attendees. Tickets for the event range from a low of $73.75 per person (including taxes and fees) to a high of $225, for a spot in the arena and participation in a 'meet and greet.' There was no indication to whom or what the proceeds will go. The costly ticket price has some on the left accusing Beck and Palin of profiting off 9/11: * What's the $$$ For? asks libertarian blogger Doug Mataconis at Outside the Beltway: “Charging for a 9/11 rally does sound odd, although presumably at least a portion of the ticket price is going toward facility rental. Nonetheless, if I was putting out that much money for a political rally I’d want to know where the profits were going.” * Shameful, writes Huffington Post contributor Bob Cesca on his blog: “These people ought to be ashamed on themselves. Unless the proceeds are going to the families of the victims (who Glenn Beck hates), I can't think of anything more gratuitous and shameless — other than, perhaps, a 'genuine slivers of Ground Zero' mail order business.” Lee Fang at Think Progress adds, “In addition to using September 11th as a launching pad to score political points, the right is now using the day to rake in cash.” * Don't Raise a Stink Just Yet, writes Christian Heinze at GOP12: “It seems a bit unseemly to charge for an event like this, but the devil or angel will be in the details of where that money goes.” * This Is a Patriotic Event, writes Sarah Palin on her Facebook page: “We can count on Glenn to make the night interesting and inspiring, and I can think of no better way to commemorate 9/11 than to gather with patriots who will 'never forget.'” http://www.theatlanticwire.com/opinions/view/opinion/Are-Glenn-Beck-and-Sarah-Pa… added by: TimALoftis
