Boy Band Allegiances: Why They Matter

In honor of MTV’s Battle of the Boy Bands, Above the Buzz breaks down boy-band mania and why picking a favorite really matters. By Jocelyn Vena The Wanted Photo: Island Def Jam There’s a full-on war happening out in the pop trenches. That war is being fought on the battlefield of the hearts of teen girls everywhere. The soldiers? Well, they are the new bevy of boy bands that are dominating the charts, the airwaves and the conversation. Some people ( mostly some older men that I know ) are confused by it. They may not understand why anyone should care about boy bands. Well, here’s why we do care: I think the rest of us are kind of into that joyful feeling of youthful exuberance that comes with boy bands. That feeling those five guys give you when they sing to you about love and how pretty you are. Heck, we’ve all been there. We’ve all had our Nick Carters or Justin Timberlakes. These days, some girls are proudly waving their freak flags and declaring their devotion to always-cheeky British boy band the Wanted . Meanwhile, other girls prefer the floppy-haired, puppy love vibe of One Direction . Either way, these guys are using well-produced pop tunes about the nuances of romance to win you (or your little sister or teen cousin or some other young woman you know) over. And those girls feel they must decide — they have to pick a band. Girls, I understand that strife. Listen, I’ve been there. I spent my formidable early teen years at the height of the greatest boy-band battle of all time: the Backstreet Boys vs. ‘NSYNC . Yep, I survived it. Like Katniss in “The Hunger Games.” They were like the Peeta and Gale of the pop world. Who would I choose? Well, I chose. And I’ve never doubted my choice. So, to aid you with this modern-day boy-band dilemma, here’s some handy advice to help you navigate the murky waters of a boy-band-pocalypse. Back then, I happily declared “BSB for life!” Sure, I enjoyed ‘NSYNC a lot. I had all their albums, saw them in concert, may have wondered what it would be like to date one of them. I was hardly a boy-band rookie at that point. As a kid, I had already been pretty obsessed with the New Kids on the Block. “Please Don’t Go Girl?” Psh, try, “Please don’t go guys … ever.” My love for boy bands has been and will always be a lifelong commitment. The fever I had for the Backstreet Boys was beyond. It was “wake up early to wait in line for concert tickets” obsessed. It was “get my VCR ready to tape their appearance on ‘TRL’ ” crazed. It was “break out my boom box and make mixtapes of their radio appearances and play them back … over and over” fevered. I had posters and T-shirts and concert stubs and more posters and T-shirts and albums and concert specials and everything BSB. I loved the guys so much that I may have even attempted to pen songs that I thought the guys might want to sing. (And no, you can’t ever read them or hear them. I’m no Max Martin.) So, as you can see, I get it. I get how you can love a band that much. But you might be wondering, how did I pick a side? Well, that’s not easy to put into words. I just did it — I just picked with my heart. I think when it comes to identifying with a boy band, it’s just something you feel in your gut. It’s their music, their brand of boy-band bravado, their flavor. Their sheer existence and the way it speaks to you. Why did I pick the Backstreet Boys? I don’t know. I just loved them. Those songs, those melodies. Man, it didn’t get better than that. They just spoke to me on some subatomic level. I mean, who could not pick a band who tells you “I’ll never break your heart/ I’ll never make you cry”? Now, as I watch a new generation of girls caught up in boy-band mania, I get it. These are the boys you crush on. These are the boys you pin your girlhood dreams on. So, get caught up in the fever, girls. It only happens once. Blast the tunes, go to the shows, buy the merchandise. I promise you, one day when you’re all grown-up, you’ll look back on this time fondly. Why? Well, to put it simply, nothing is better than your first boy band. Nothing. Voting in round two of MTV’s Battle of the Boy Bands runs until noon ET on Monday, April 30. Mindless Behavior ‘Definitely Unique’ Among Boy Bands

‘Our Mindless movement is all about being confident, just being yourself,’ Battle of the Boy Bands hopefuls tell MTV News. By Kelly Marino Mindless Behavior Photo: Getty Images The first round of MTV News’ Battle of the Boy Bands has officially ended, but there is still time for fans to cast their votes for their favorite heartthrob group in hopes to title them the ultimate boy band of all time. Another group urging their biggest followers to vote for them are the guys from Mindless Behavior . But before you get mindless with your votes, here are some facts about the foursome that might help steer your mind in the right direction: Highest Chart Achievement Their single “Mrs. Right” featuring rapper Diggy Simmons reached #8 on the U.S. Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop charts after its 2011 release. Defining Tune The guys confess they would travel the world just to find the right kind of girl in the beat-popping hit “Mrs. Right,” causing female hearts in every country to flutter. Standout Video During their pledge to search high and low for “Mrs. Right,” the boys get a lesson or two in geography from their teacher, Professor LL Cool J. Directed by Brett Ratner, the video also features Mike Epps as the school janitor, who joins in on the fun during a pep rally to cheer on Diggy Simmons and the group’s signature dance moves. Debut Album Their debut album, #1 Girl, hit the U.S. in September 2011, debuting at #7 on the Billboard 200 with 36,000 copies sold in its first week. Biggest Competition Despite all of their success, the boys weren’t afraid to admit who they thought might be their biggest competition amid the new wave of boy bands that has exploded on the scene. “As far as other boy bands who I feel [are] our biggest competition is One Direction and the Wanted,” Roc Royal told us. “That’s a huge competition for us, because we all have different movements, and they come from the U.K., and they also have fans out here, which, they have a lot of fans out here, so it’s crazy.” So why do the guys think they should win our Battle of the Boys Band? Well, it’s simple, really: “There’s a lot of boy bands in the poll, but we’re definitely unique,” Princeton stated. “So please vote for us.” Ray Ray chimed in: “I think we should win the title for Best Boy Band of All Time because we have a great movement. Our Mindless movement is all about being confident, just being yourself, not caring what other people think, stopping all the bullying and, one, we’re really great artists. We have songs that anyone can listen to. That’s why I think we should win.” “And we love all of the fans,” Princeton added. When it comes to learning the key to becoming a great boy band, the group even filled us in on a little secret the Backstreet Boys once told them while on tour together: “When we were on tour with the Backstreet Boys, the advice that they gave us was ‘Stick together no matter what,’ ” Ray Ray shared. “They said: You might have arguments here and there, but just stick together. You have to become family although you’re in a group. You have to literally become family, and you got to stick together.” Voting in round two of MTV’s Battle of the Boy Bands runs until noon ET on Monday, April 30. The Wanted’s ‘Chasing The Sun’ Teaser: Watch It Here!

The boy band will premiere the full video tonight at 7:53 ET during ‘MTV First: The Wanted.’ By Christina Garibaldi The Wanted’s “Chasing the Sun” music video Photo: Universal Music Group The Wanted are set to premiere their much-anticipated video for their second U.S. single, “Chasing the Sun,” tonight on MTV. And before the British boy band introduce the full clip and answer fans’ questions, they gave us a little teaser. In the 30-second clip, the fivesome travel the streets of Los Angeles in the middle of the night, with a pack of girls clinging to each of the boys. Intercut with shots of the band on a rooftop singing the chorus of the track, it seems as if the group is literally chasing the sun. Coming up to a gated door, member Tom Parker flashes what looks to be a sun tattoo on his hand, and the guard lets him pass into the sunlight. Not much of the plot is given away in this clip, but when we caught up with the group on the set of the video earlier this month, they teased to their fans what they can expect. “Our song ‘Chasing the Sun’ is basically about the party that keeps on going,” Jay McGuiness said, with pal Max George giving a bit more insight into how that will manifest in the clip: “There’s certain shots which we’ve just done now which are on a rooftop, and then we’re filming all night until 6 in the morning, and then the last shot, I think, will be us just kind of walking away looking rather disheveled,” George explained. This is the third video of the Wanted’s that has been helmed by Director X, who previously worked on the video for their smash single, “Glad You Came.” “You always want to do better than your last song, and we’ve always set a really high standard with ‘Glad You Came’ already,” McGuiness said. “But I think we know now from the singles we’ve got in our pocket, there’s no way we’re going anywhere. We’re here to stay, and our songs are going to get better and better. I’m just bragging right now so hard.” Well, see if the Wanted live up to their expectations when they down with MTV News’ Sway Calloway tonight at 7:53 ET on MTV during “MTV First: The Wanted.” Immediately following the premiere, the band will stay for an additional 30-minute live Q&A on MTV.com and will be taking fan questions, so make sure you submit them via MTV.com or @MTVNews on Twitter, using the hashtags #MTVFirst or #AskTheWanted. Voting in round one closes on Thursday at noon ET. The tourney is sure to heat up before the winner is announced on May 7. All right, it’s time to reveal our list of the 32 competing boy bands. Read on as we break down a few key matchups in the first round of competition and sound off on our list on Twitter using the hashtag #BBB! Vote for your favorite band, discuss and share on Facebook and Twitter in the MTV Battle of the Boy Bands interactive bracket! Midwest Backstreet Boys vs. Westlife : This will likely be an interesting first-round matchup since these two bands have one thing in particular on their side: longevity. Both groups have been around since the late 1990s, and while Westlife called it quits in 2011, the Backstreet Boys are still going strong, currently on a European tour with fellow boy-banders and tournament finalists, New Kids on the Block. Of course, BSB had worldwide success. Their 1999 album, Millennium, sold more 1 million copies in its first week. And Westlife, originally signed by Simon Cowell, had a hit song in the U.S, “Swear It Again,” and ruled the U.K. charts with 14 #1 singles. Here’s a fun fact: Westlife’s first big break came in 1998 when they opened for the Backstreet Boys at a concert in Dublin. Additional Matchups : O-Town vs. the Jackson 5 98 Degrees vs. the Beatles New Kids on the Block vs. Take That East ‘NSYNC vs. 5ive : Yes, both of these groups consisted of five members, but they actually have more in common than that. In 1998, 5ive embarked on a U.S tour with ‘NSYNC, but soon after, left the tour due to exhaustion. Interestingly, both bands notably decided to call it quits at the peak time of their success. In 2001, 5ive had just released their third album when the lead single, “Let’s Dance,” became their third #1 in the U.K. They soon announced they were calling it a day. Similarly, in 2002, after ‘NSYNC’s second album, No Strings Attached became the best-selling album of the decade, the group released Celebrity, which gave the group three #1 singles. After a tour in support of their third album, they decided to go on a permanent break. Additional Matchups : LFO vs. 112 Jonas Brothers vs. Menudo Hanson vs. BBMak West The Wanted vs. Color Me Badd : It’s not only old versus new in this matchup, it’s pop versus R&B. British boy band the Wanted have had much success overseas and recently found fame Stateside with their hit single “Glad You Came.” The group’s first U.S. EP hits stores on Tuesday and they just released their next track, “Chasing the Sun.” But don’t count out Color Me Badd: Much like The Wanted, this group had success early on in their career. From 1991 to 1992, the group had five hit singles off their debut album, including the smash hit “I Wanna Sex You Up.” Additional Matchups : The Monkees vs. 2gether Big Time Rush vs. All-4-One Boyz II Men vs. Jodeci South One Direction vs. Day 26 : This could be an exciting matchup since the two bands were assembled by two of the most influential minds in music: Simon Cowell and Diddy. British boy band One Direction got their start on the U.K. version of the “X Factor” and quickly took off from there. In March, their debut album, Up All Night, debuted at #1, the first time a U.K. group did so with a debut album . Day 26 also got their start on a television show, MTV’s “Making the Band 4.” In 2008, one year after their formation, the group released their self-titled album on Diddy’s Bad Boy records; it debuted at #1 on the Billboard album chart. Additional Matchups : IM5 vs. B2K NKOTBSB vs. New Edition Another Bad Creation vs. Mindless Behavior Voting is under way in round one of MTV’s Battle of the Boy Bands and closes at noon ET on Thursday, April 26. Winners are determined by fan ballots, so if your favorite band made the cut, keep voting. Tune in to AMTV and MTV Hits daily for boy-band video takeovers. Fat Joe Compares Mobb Deep To Gang Starr

Both groups represent ‘purest forms of hip-hop music,’ Joe tells MTV News, commenting on recent Mobb Deep drama. By Rob Markman Fat Joe Photo: MTV News Mobb Deep ‘s musical legacy is cemented. There aren’t many groups in rap who could match Havoc and Prodigy’s reputation for crafting unfiltered street music, so when Mobb Deep appeared to be in turmoil last week, fans feared the worst. Fat Joe , for one, is thrilled that all the drama is behind the Queens, New York, duo. Joe Crack actually likens the Mobb to another pivotal rap duo, Gang Starr. The group, which consisted of DJ Premier and late rapper Guru, was responsible for quite a few classic singles, including “Step in the Arena” and “DWYCK.” Mobb Deep, of course, also have favorites under their belt, like 1995’s “Shook Ones Pt. II” and the Lil’ Kim-assisted “Quiet Storm” remix. “Mobb Deep is equivalent to Gang Starr with being one of the purest forms of hip-hop music,” Fat Joe told MTV News after a taping of MTV2’s upcoming “Hip Hop Squares.” “Whenever you want to go do an ill, hard-core hip-hop song that crosses over in the clubs, anybody who makes it is like, ‘Yo, this is like “Shook Ones,” this is like “Quiet Storm.” ‘ They the kings of that.” On April 9, some pretty vicious messages directed at Prodigy were sent from Havoc’s now-defunct Twitter account. The messages threatened physical violence and questioned Prodigy’s sexuality. Sources close to Mobb Deep initially confirmed to MTV News that Hav’s account wasn’t hacked, but later that evening Havoc released a statement saying that he lost his phone and declaring his allegiance to the group and Prodigy. “To all Mobb Deep fans: it’s business as usual! It’s Mobb Deep all day,” the statement read. On Friday the group even attended a Knicks game together and released a photo , silencing speculation about a disconnect. Fat Joe is just glad to see the duo as a unified front. “I really don’t know none of the details,” he said. “If they were to break up, it would be a sad day for hip-hop because we love Mobb Deep as a group, as a fan.” What’s your favorite Mobb Deep song? Axl Rose Isn’t First To Blast Rock And Roll Hall of Fame

Black Sabbath, Kiss and the Sex Pistols have also blasted the institution. By Gil Kaufman Guns N’ Roses’ Axl Rose Photo: Getty Images Suffice it to say that in his lengthy, lawyerly letter to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this week refusing his induction
as part of the classic line-up of Guns N’ Roses , singer Axl Rose had a bone (or two, or six or 20) to pick with the process. It’s hard to say who the enigmatic hard-rock icon was most mad at, but his steadfast refusal to attend the induction, or even acknowledge the honor, put him in a long tradition of rock legends who’ve either bashed the RRHOF for not including them (only to change their tune once their number came up) or refused to show up , not to mention the fans who’ve raised holy hell when their favorite bands couldn’t make the cut. MTV News’ James Montgomery penned his own open letter to Axl and the group’s fans.
Among the other hell-raisers: Ozzy Osbourne/Black Sabbath : Before the group got the call in 2005
, the Blizzard of Ozz had been very vocal about how little he wanted to do with the Hall. In a 1999 letter to the Hall of Fame, Ozzy famously told the institution, “Just take our name off the list. Save the ink. Forget about us. The nomination is meaningless, because it’s not voted on by the fans. It’s voted on by the supposed elite for the industry and the media, who’ve never bought an album or concert ticket in their lives, so their vote is irrelevant to me.” He added, “Let’s face it, Black Sabbath has never been media darlings. We’re a people’s band and that suits us just fine.” John Lydon/Sex Pistols : Lydon (aka “Johnny Rotten”) was his typical snotty self when his pioneering punk band made the short list in 2006. In a cheeky letter, the perennially put out Lydon wrote, “Next to the Sex Pistols rock and roll and that hall of fame is a piss stain. Your museum. Urine in wine. We’re not coming. We’re not your monkey and so what?” Needless to say, the band did not show up for the ceremony. Gene Simmons/Kiss : The kabuki theater bass player is never at a loss for words. And nothing makes him angrier than the fact that the “greatest band in the world” has never been invited to the party. He’s lashed out at the Rock Hall repeatedly in the 12 years since his group became eligible. “There are disco bands, rap bands, Yiddish folk song bands, but not Kiss,” he said in 2008. David Lee Roth/Eddie Van Halen/Van Halen : The longest-running soap opera in rock was kicked up a notch in 2007 when VH was slated for induction. Original singer Roth had been rehearsing for the event and speculation swirled for months about who would show up and if replacement singer Sammy Hagar would be on hand as well. Then, in classic VH fashion, Eddie and Dave both bailed and it was left to Hagar and now-former bassist Michael Anthony to accept on the band’s behalf. And then there are the fans. In addition to the unending volley of complaints from the Kiss Army, followers of Canadian prog rockers Rush have been bellyaching for the past decade of the band’s eligibility that the wizardly trio deserve their spot in the Hall. They’ve picketed, launched petitions and all but drawn their broadswords and threatened to storm the I.M. Pei-designed glass pyramid in Cleveland to rectify this grave injustice. All to no avail. Are you disappointed that Axl Rose won’t be at this weekend’s Hall of Fame ceremony? Let us know in comments below. Related Artists Guns N’ Roses Black Sabbath

Odd Future’s Success ‘Pretty Crazy’ For Earl Sweatshirt

‘It was difficult processing through all of it,’ Earl tells ‘RapFix Live’ of famous ‘Free Earl’ campaign. By Rob Markman Earl Sweatshirt on “RapFix Live” Photo: MTV News Earl Sweatshirt may not have been around for the ascent of Odd Future , but the once-exiled MC is now back in the OFWGKTA fold, and judging from his playful demeanor on Wednesday’s (March 21) “RapFix Live,” it doesn’t seem as if he’s missed a beat. “It’s been pretty crazy, watching them do them,” Earl said about his hiatus from the OF crew while holding four different microphones. While the group was busy breaking through, performing on “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon” and winning Video Music Awards , Earl was attending the Coral Reef Academy in Samoa . Though his 2010 free Internet album Earl helped lay the groundwork for the crew’s future success, the OF wunderkind was left on the outside looking in. There was even a “Free Earl” campaign that fans championed in the MC’s absence. “It was difficult processing through all of it ’cause it was a lot goin’ on with it,” he told “RapFix Live.” Though Earl returned home at the top of February, there was concern that he wouldn’t be able to make an appearance on The OF Tape, Vol. 2, the album that the crew just released on Tuesday. He was, however, able to make a last-minute contribution to the album’s closer, “Oldie.” On the 10-minute posse cut, which features all members of the crew, Earl starts his verse spitting, “Look the contrast is a pair of lips/ Swallowing syrup and setting fire to sheriffs’ whips.” In an off-the-cuff music video for the track, Earl is seen goofing off with the rest of the group, just in case there was any concern about how he would fit in. “Feels like home,” he said on the set of “RapFix Live,” where OFWGKTA laughed uncontrollably for almost an hour. As far as what’s next for Earl Sweatshirt: “I’ma do something hot,” he said sarcastically. Related Videos ‘RapFix Live’ Has An Odd Future Related Artists Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All

Gretchen Rossi on Tamra Barney Engagement: What a Farce!

You absolutely will not believe this, but at least one person out there thinks an engagement has been arranged for the sake of reality TV ratings. We’ll give you a moment to get over the shock… In the wake of Tamra Barney’s engagement to Eddie judge , co-star Gretchen Rossi has come out and called BS on the entire arrangement. Without quoting any sources directly, TMZ claims Rossi was actually approached by Real Housewives of Orange County producers first, as they asked her and Slade Smiley to get engaged on this season’s finale. They even, allegedly, bribed Smiley with a free ring and an all-expenses-paid trip to wherever he wanted to pop the question. But Slade and Gretchen turned down this offer. Tamra and Eddie, though, jumped all over it and the same insider says Bravo helped organize the entire proposal. No comment as of yet from the network, Rossi or Judge. [Photos: WENN.com]
