‘Wall Street’ Brings In Box-Office Bucks

‘Money Never Sleeps’ takes $7 million in theaters on Friday. By Mawuse Ziegbe Michael Douglas and Shia LaBeouf in “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps” Photo: 20th Century Fox The Box-Office Top Five #1 “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps” ($7 million) #2 “The Town” ($5 million) #3 “Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole” ($4.6 million) #4 “Easy A” ($3.6 million) #5 “You Again” ($2.8 million) Proving money still talks — at least, to moviegoers — “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps” took the top spot at the Friday box office. Michael Douglas’ return as Gordon Gekko, 23 years after he powered the cautionary money, power and success tale of the original “Wall Street,” rang up $7 million in ticket sales. Another cash-grabbing flick, “The Town,” also scored big with audiences, landing in the second-place slot. The film, which follows vault looters (Ben Affleck), ladies (Blake Lively and Rebecca Hall) and the law (Jon Hamm) as they get caught up in the nefarious Boston bank-robbing underworld, made $5 million. The haul brings the movie’s total estimated tally to just over $38 million since its debut last Friday. The Friday top five wasn’t all about money grubbing and shady ethics. The animated feature “Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole” debuted in third place. Adapted from the children’s book series by author Kathryn Lasky, and boasting voice-over performances from Helen Mirren and Geoffrey Rush, the kid-friendly fantasy flick raked in an estimated $4.6 million. The high-school comedy “Easy A” continued to turn in good marks at the box office. Featuring a cast of young Hollywood names, including Emma Stone, Penn Badgley and Amanda Bynes, the flick pulled in $3.6 million during its second Friday on screens. Rounding out the top five with a tale of post-high school awkwardness is “You Again.” Audiences plunked down $2.8 million to catch Kristen Bell’s turn as a successful PR professional grappling with the fact that her brother’s fianc

Fantasia Pole Dances On ‘Fantasia For Real 2’ Premiere

Singer preps for new album release and heads to London in second-season kickoff. By Mawuse Ziegbe Fantasia in the season-two premiere of “Fantasia For Real” Photo: VH1 In the weeks before and after her August suicide attempt, Fantasia Barrino has arguably gone through one of the toughest moments of her life. On the second-season premiere of VH1’s “Fantasia For Real,” however, the former American Idol’s fighting spirit is on full display as she preps for the release of her third album, Back to Me. The episode kicked off with Fantasia celebrating her newly empty house in Charlotte, North Carolina, after her mother and brothers moved out. She tricked out the mansion with a new game room and a brightly colored playroom for her daughter, Zion. While the songstress appeared to revel in her drama-free domesticity, she did have an album to promote, so she jetted off to New York City to work some breezy looks in a photo shoot. The pressure was on for ‘Tasia’s next album to be a smash. Manager Brian mentioned in the episode that her upcoming effort could determine whether she’s just a recording artist or an “icon.” The singer said the feedback she’d been getting so far was positive and she just wanted “the whole world to feel like that.” So, in order to become an international big deal, Barrino had to head across the pond to connect with her London fanbase. But first, she got a visit from family. When Aunt Bunny cames to town, ‘Tasia complimented her weight loss and then dragged her to a workout sure to get the blood pumping: a pole dancing class. The two worked exercises like the “loopty loop” and “spread eagle,” moves that prompted Bunny to throw a side-eye and declare, “You too comfortable on the pole!” Faced with the slew of tabloid headlines about the singer’s supposed dalliances with a married man, Bunny and Fantasia’s mother grilled the singer about her love life. Fantasia denied rumors that she broke up her “friend’s” union, insisting, “I come from a home that was wrecked” and maintaining that she would never wreak the same havoc on another family. The confrontation eventually sent her to tears. She latter dubbed her love live “touchy” and added, “There’s some things going on, but it’s not what you think, and I’m just not ready to talk about it.” Bunny also checked up on Fantasia’s brother Teeny in his spankin’-new crib, which was largely free of furniture but big on Feng Shui. He seemed all right, judging by the spacious abode, but he did admit to his auntie that even though he identifies himself as a music engineer, “technically, I still don’t have a job.” The episode wrapped up with Fantasia finally hitting the stage in London, after stressing over the news that ticket sales were sluggish. But when the soul singer did arrive onstage, she was greeted with a packed house of amped concertgoers who sang every word to her new track “Even Angels.” What did you think of the season premiere of “Fantasia for Real”? 3DS To Offer Portable 3-D Entertainment, Nintendo Announces At E3

3-D movies and camera, ‘Kid Icarus: Uprising’ and ‘Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword’ dominate company’s keynote presentation. By Brian Warmoth The Nintendo 3DS Photo: Nintendo Nintendo came to the 2010 Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles with very little information circulating in public about its upcoming portable 3-D system, the 3DS. While Microsoft and Sony have focused on gaming in living-room spaces with Xboxes and PlayStation 3’s this year, Nintendo opted to surprise its audience with the announcement that their DS successor would play 3-D movies from major studios and take 3-D pictures. Together with an extensive list of third-party developers, such as Activision, EA, Harmonix, Konami, Capcom and others, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata presented logos from franchises including “Metal Gear Solid,” “Saints Row” and more, which he expects to see appear on the new portable device. “In this case, I believe we will enjoy our biggest launch support ever from third parties,” Iwata said onstage. “To all of you developers and publishers, I want you to know that [I am] truly grateful for the support [you’ve offered].” Iwata and Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime focused mainly on bringing 3-D viewing to a mass market without the use of glasses and reintroducing the company’s classic character Pit for the 3DS title “Kid Icarus: Uprising.” Still, the 3DS’ farthest-reaching impact may come from the system’s features that extend beyond gaming. “Nintendo 3DS is also capable of displaying 3-D Hollywood movies,” Iwata explained. “We are not announcing any specific plans [this week], but at our booth, you will find demonstrators showing you [examples] from Disney, Warner Bros. and DreamWorks. You can see DreamWorks’ ‘How to Train Your Dragon,’ Warner Bros.’ ‘Legend of the Guardians’ and Disney’s ‘Tangled,’ all playing in 3-D.” Though no distribution plans, partnerships or agreements were detailed, the Iwata did state that Nintendo will be the first to enter the 3-D sector of handheld entertainment. “This is the first time any such 3-D content has been demonstrated without the need to wear glasses,” Iwata said. “It’s also, it seems, one of the first times such content will be commercially available for a mobile device.” The 3DS will incorporate a “Slide Pad” to adjust imaging on its 3-D display, as well as a motion sensor, gyro sensor and two camera lenses. “What this means is you can also take photos and view them in 3-D,” he stated. In addition to “Uprising,” Nintendo showed demonstrations from its new Wii title “The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword,” which saw its name premiere during the keynote address along with word that it would launch in 2011. That announcement was joined by a first look at “Donkey Kong Country Returns” and “Kirby: Epic Yarn,” which will reintroduce two of Nintendo’s longest-running franchises. The already-known Metroid title “The Other M,” meanwhile, received an August 31 release date, and the new offering “Mario Sports Mix” received a 2011 release window. Third-party titles on display included “Just Dance 2,” a new “GoldenEye” game for the Wii featuring the voice of Daniel Craig, “Epic Mickey” and “NBA Jam,” which Fils-Aime emphasized as an exclusive. “Technology is only a tool,” Fils-Aime said, assessing Nintendo’s approach. “The end product, the thing that does matter, is the experience. And the best experiences always come when technology and game design are perfectly matched.” How well Nintendo manages to match its new entertainment platform with “Uprising” and everything else the third parties bring to it at launch should come into focus when the 3DS launches, but the development partners and intended scope of use should provide a wide range of opportunities heading into next year. Cats Are Tricking You!

CULTURE BUZZ : Purring experts at the University of Sussex in England have just released a study showing that cats use a special kind of purr to coerce their guardians into giving them food. Unlike regular purring, the “soliciting purr” has a sound with a similar frequency to a human baby's cry, which suckers like you naturally respond to. Contribute: Add an image, link, video or comment
