Majority of Americans Think Oil Companies Should Pay More for Oil Spills

Photo via NY Daily News The Oil Pollution Act of 1990 was passed after the Exxon-Valdez to hold oil companies responsible for their spills. One of the main provisions of the bill was that it held oil companies liable for funding the cleanup of their messes — but only up to $75 million dollars worth. It’s questionable enough whether that sum was adequate to pay for the cleanup in Prince William Sound (there are still tons of oil lingering on the beaches there , remember). But that wa… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Jon Stewart Blasts BP for Having 760 Pre-Spill Safety Violations (Video)

The Daily Show was unfortunately on hiatus during the last couple weeks of the BP Gulf oil spill, leaving a void where negligent companies should be lampooned and scathing satire delivered. But fear not, everyone! The spill is still continuing unabated , more than 40 days after it began, and there looks to be no end in sight — which means plenty more time for BP Gulf spill satire! Hell, we could be laughing until Christmas, according to some reports, since that’s how long experts say it might ta… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Butterfly Biomimicry Can Curb Counterfeiting of Banknotes

Image via University of Exeter The iridescence of butterfly wings have been the source of inspiration for more energy efficient yet vivid displays , but their shine is proving useful for brightening up not just our gadgets, but the money we buy them with as well. Homeland Security Had Proposed Cutting Emergency Response Budget Before Gulf Spill

Offshore Surface Oil Forecast Deepwater Horizon MC252, for Monday 31 May, 2010. Image credit: NOAA, DeepwaterHorizonResponse.com Most of the criticisms I’ve seen so far of how the Obama Administration was responding to the Gulf oil spill have been ill-informed ‘Monday Morning Quarterbacking’ by people with no field experience or background in engineering or chemistry. So I pretty much ignored it all, hoping that the pros were ignoring it as well. However, a recent story by the

New Bill Would Ban Offshore Drilling and Increase Fuel Economy Standard

Photo via RV We learned yesterday that if the average American were to drive 5.4 miles less every day, we’d eliminate the need to drill in the Gulf — that would be enough to relieve the demand for the 1.75 million barrels that gets pumped out. But could saving gas really be enough incentive to cut out the drilling? Vermont senator Bernie Sanders thinks it could — he’s just introduced legislation that would ban offshore d… Read the full story on TreeHugger
