We Are a Nation of Oiloholics

Image credit: Napalm filled tires /Flickr This post was written by Colin Beavan, author of No Impact Man and director of NoImpactProject.org , which helps people choose lifestyles that are better for them and better for the planet. Question: When an alcoholic leaves a bar, gets behind the wheel and drunkenly drives into his third or fourth wreck, do you blame the bartender who served the drinks or the alcoholic who drank them? Now answer this: When a society addicted to greater and greater fossil fuel use experience… Read the full story on TreeHugger

BP Says New ‘Top Hat’ is About 150 Feet From Oil Leak

Photo: BP Tip of the Hat, Wag of the Riser Another week, another attempt by BP to plug the massive oil leak at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico. This time they’re trying to use a containment dome to stop the oil from getting in the water (this one is called ‘Top Hat 10’ and should allow a tighter fit). The latest reports are that the top hat is only a few feet from where is needs to be, and that this time, if all goes well, it could allow the capture of pretty much all the oil. But after some many failed attempts, let’s not hold our breath… Read on for more details…. Read the full story on TreeHugger

The BP Spill and the State of Clean Energy Legislation (Video)

If at any point during your observation of this interminable oil crisis in the Gulf you’ve found yourself thinking, well, it looks like we should probably do something to start curbing our national dependence on this stuff, know that you’re not alone. And if, like me, you’re starting to get pretty ticked off that there seems to be absolutely no momentum building in Congress (or anywhere, really) behind policy that would do exactly that, then you may be scratching your head over why exactly that is. This seems like a perfect time to win political points by taking on Big Oil, right? Alas. This video from an MSNBC segment does a… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Oil Hits New Orleans’ Lake Pontchartrain

Photo via MSNBC Lake Pontchartrain lies just north of New Orleans. The famous lake and Louisiana icon suffered from pollution until restoration efforts brought it back to health in the 1990s. It once again became an important fishery and popular recreational destination. Then it got hit by Hurricane Katrina. Now, of course, it stands to be threatened all over again. Oil has just made landfall there, with some 1,000 tar balls washing ashore, and 1,700 pounds of crude having been cleaned up so far. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Avoiding a BP-Style Disaster on the Bosphorus

A tanker passing underneath one of the Bosphorus bridges. Photo by Jennifer Hattam The sight of dozens of mammoth tankers anchored off the coast of Istanbul, or of lone ones passing underneath the two high Bosphorus bridges as they steam their way to or from the Black Sea, is undeniably impressive. But in the wake of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill , Turkish off… Read the full story on TreeHugger

World’s Largest Oil Skimmer Ready to Clean the Gulf (Video)

Photo via Daily Press The world’s biggest oil skimmer is now in the Gulf, and is preparing to take part in the cleanup operations. But it’s kind of hard to conceptualize what the biggest oil skimmer in the world, which is 400 yards long (a quarter of a mile) and 100 yards wide, actually looks like. Unless you’re standing on it. Or at least watching a video of some reporter standing on it. And so: … Read the full story on TreeHugger

BP Spill Bill Advances in the Senate

Photo via TMC Net This legislation seems like a no-brainer: A bill that takes steps to prevent another such disaster, in the wake of the worst oil spill in the history of both the Gulf and the United States. Thankfully, such a bill — one that requires deep water drilling be better regulated, demands oil companies employ more preventative measures and have thorough response plans, and eliminates the ‘liability cap’ on how much those companies must pay in damages when they cause a spill — is advancing in the Senate. In other words, it may not be long before we see a ‘BP spill bill’. Here are th… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Above Average Gulf of Mexico Dead Zone Forecast by NOAA Scientists

File image of Gulf areas affected by hypoxia, NOAA No, it has nothing directly to do with the BP oil spill, but it won’t help things… Scientists supported by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration have just announced that the northern Gulf of Mexico hypoxic zone–that’s the Gulf Dead Zone to you and me, where there’s so little oxygen that it doesn’t really support life–is likely to be of above average size this summer, though it won’t set a new re… Read the full story on TreeHugger

A Boeing 777 Hypermiles Across the Atlantic

Photo: Wikipedia , CC How Many MPG for a Boeing? Hypermiling has gained a lot of popularity these past few years. It was even the Oxford Dictionary Word of the Year for 2008 (“‘Hypermiling’ or ‘to hypermile’ is to attempt to maximize gas mileage by making fuel-conserving adjustments to one’s car and one’s driving techniques.”). But while the word is mostly use to talk about driving cars more efficiently, there’s… Read the full story on TreeHugger
