Yeah, yeah, I know, Miley Cyrus kind of looks like she’s already dressed up for Halloween with this outfit and the hair. But for some reason, I’m still digging it. Maybe it’s because I’m starting to get used to the hair. Or because there’s no disguising Miley’s sweater mounds. Yeah, probably that last one. Related Articles: Miley Cyrus Nude Pictures Leaked? Long hair don’t care… But how bad is it that many folks assume that being mixed is a recipe for “good hair” ? The reason we ask is that we read a lengthy interview with our boo thang Elle Varner from the November issue of Sister2Sister magazine where publisher Jamie Foster Brown grills Elle about where she got her thick natural hair and starts quizzing her about her gene pool. Via the print edition of S2S : Jamie: Okay, what about that hair? Where did you get that hair from? Elle: My hair is my hair, you know? I’m Cape Verdean and Black. Jamie: But who in the family has hair like that? Does your mom have a lot of hair? Elle: My dad’s hair is thick and long, and, like, longer than mine. It’s crazy. My dad has so much hair. Jamie: He’s got long hair too? Is he mixed or anything? Elle: Yeah, he’s half Black, half Swedish. Did that offend you at all? Or did it sound like perfectly normal questions? The reason we ask is that Melanie Fiona was reamed this summer for remarks she made in an interview she did this June/July with a “black hair” magazine. Here’s the troublesome quote from the Sophisticate’s Black Hair Styles and Care Guide interview via Longing4Length.com : SBH:What’s the secret to your gorgeous long hair? Melanie Fiona: I was born with a full head of hair, and my mom wouldn’t let me cut it until I was 12! I’m mixed – my mom is Black and Portuguese and my dad is Indian so I have a good mix for growth . Elle’s answer isn’t much different from Melanie’s — the response is that their hair texture is a gene pool thing. But many folks took offense to what Melanie had to say because she chose the words “good mix for growth” but Elle’s answer implies almost the same thing. So what’s really the difference? And does it even matter? Let’s be honest, you don’t have to be “mixed” to have good hair. There are plenty of full black women with healthy heads of thick, long, natural hair. So do we all need to be re-educated about this topic? Regardless, the “exotic” girls seem to always have the most success in the entertainment business, so is this just a touchy topic for black women? Please discuss! WENN
We love “Real Housewives Of Beverly Hills” star Kyle Richards’ matrimony-dom advice ! Via People : Most of Kyle Richards’s Real Housewives of Beverly Hills costars don’t have a good track record when it comes to keeping their marriages intact while on the show – but Richards is certain her relationship with hubby Mauricio Umansky will not crumble in front of cameras. “I am like a lion with my family, my cubs,” Richards, 43, told PEOPLE at Thursday’s grand opening of her Kyle by Alene Too boutique in Beverly Hills. “I’m very, very, very protective. If I ever felt like something was being affected in any way by the show, I would just walk away in a millisecond,” she says. Adrienne Maloof is the latest cast member who Richards has watched go through a split. The reality star’s husband, Dr. Paul Nassif, filed to end their marriage on Aug. 28. “She’s doing as well as can be expected,” Richards says about her pal. “I think they’re both having a hard time. I think any time someone gets divorced, it’s sad – especially for the kids. I think a lot of people liked [watching their bickering on TV] and thought it was cute, but obviously there was more going on behind closed doors than we realized.” Based on her own experiences and what she’s witnessed within her social circle, Richards says, “My suggestion to anybody who [wants to do] a reality show, if you have cracks in your marriage, don’t do one of these. You have to be really, really solid in order to do a reality show like this. I feel solid.” Although her marriage isn’t a source of drama, the new store owner admits she’ll have her own share of issues play out when season 3 of Bravo’s hit series premieres on Nov. 5. “Some days I’m excited [about the new season], Richards explains. “Some days I’m scared. I’m telling you, wherever we go, problems seem to follow.” We agree with Kyle. What is the value of making reality tv cash if it costs you your family? Image via Bravo
Awww, poor thang… Tia Mowry Admits That She Cried When She Cut Her Hair Off Via USMagazine Tia Mowry loves her new pixie-cut — but she did shed a few tears at first! “I cried! I’m just going to be honest with you, I definitely cried,” Mowry, 34, told Us Weekly Thursday of her short new ‘do at the Ingenuity Event for the launch of their new product in NYC. “I really wasn’t expecting the shock value. “A lot of people ask me, ‘What advice would you give to women who want to chop it off?’ I said, ‘Don;t think about it because if you do you won’t do it.’ But it’s very liberating and it definitely saves time.” “I am so happy that I decided to cut my hair. It literally takes me three minutes to do my hair,” she said. “I get out of the shower, put some conditioner in it, and it’s just ‘let’s go’ and I love that! I think it’s very very important to find products that allow us to be able to have more time to do things like that.” There are surely worse things that can happen in life than losing a couple inches of hair, quit it with the drama and take care of your child. That’s one way to get someone out of your hair! After two years of forgoing haircuts, John Mayer debuted a new, shorter ‘do in Los Angeles on Saturday. Mayer’s hair has seen many iterations in recent years, from long and curly and super sleek to ’80s inspired and totally buzzed. This time around, the Grammy award-winning rocker — who has sported a similar style in the past — cut his hair days after he split from Katy Perry. (He called on celebrity hairstylist Sally Hershberger for the new loo
American teenager Gabby Douglas has been wowing the world with grace, style, and of course, the women’s all-around gymnastics gold medal . Nevertheless, much of the chatter on social media and online platforms has been about the upkeep of her hair, and not all feedback is positive. Douglas, one of the few African-American gymnasts ever to compete in the Olympics and the first to win all-around gold, is an inspiring story. Time and Sports Illustrated have her on their covers. President Barack Obama called to congratulate her. So why do people care about Gabby Douglas’ hair?! “I love how she’s doing her thing and winning,’’ says 22-year-old Latisha Jenkins of Detroit told The Daily Beast . “But I just hate the way her hair looks.” “With all those pins and gel … I wish someone could have helped her make it look better since she’s being seen all over the world.” “She representing for black women everywhere.’’ According to reports, the 4’11” Douglas appears to have chemically relaxed natural hair, to which she adds a human-hair ponytail for height. The Olympic champ then apparently slicks it all back with a heavy layer of gel to help it stay in place during her high-energy performances. Hair has always been something of a hot button issue for African-American women culturally, but in the case of Douglas, isn’t the criticism a little much? Douglas’ accomplishments speak for themselves … for the conversation to turn to a teenager’s physical appearance and upkeep seems a bit unfair. Do you like her hair? Does it matter? Tell us what you think.
Fat Joe still gets the ultimate respect from his peers. The Bronx rapper recently shot the video for his latest single, “Pride & Joy,” and shared pictures from the set. Kanye West, Jadakiss, DJ Khaled, Busta Rhymes and Miguel, who all appear on the “lengthy” (sarcasm) posse cut, as well as Ashanti, all came through to appear in the Hype Williams directed clip. Throughout his rap career Lupe Fiasco has been known to go through one identity crisis after another. In his pre-Food & Liquor days he was more interested in doing his impression of a “gangsta rapper” (look it up if you don’t believe us), then he went to “backpack rap,” and now that he’s growing his hair out, it appears that his latest mask is that of a part-time revolutionary, who also likes to DJ, and has tons of criticism for President Obama.
