Perry’s hair colorist weighs in on the pop star’s ever-changing locks. By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry Photo: Jeff Bottari/ Getty Images Over the weekend, Katy Perry debuted another shade of blue hair in Las Vegas . The newer, bluer hair was more turquoise than the look she had sported weeks before on the set of an Adidas commercial . Katy is constantly changing her hair color from black to blond to pink, and seemingly every shade in between. These days, however, it seems she’s settled on blue. So, when MTV News spoke to her longtime hair colorist, Rita Hazan, she gave us the low-down on why Ms. Perry is feeling so blue these days. “Of course, being Katy, she is a lot more edgy and she’s cooler and she likes to take a lot of risks. And I love that she’s like, ‘I’m feeling a little blue, let’s go blue’ — not in her energy, just in her hair color,” Hazan explained to MTV News about the pop star’s current hair-color choice. “I felt like it’s the perfect color for her because her eyes are blue and she has the perfect skin tone to be a really vibrant, really cool, intense blue.” When Hazan first heard about Perry’s decision to deepen her locks to blue, she wanted her to be a “cobalt blue, muted cobalt blue; it’s really cool. It took me three days to come up with this color. I’m so obsessed with it. It’s like the wallpaper for my iPhone.” Since then, the color has lightened up a bit, but regardless of the shade, the hair still has everyone buzzing. “I was shocked by all the crazy reactions that people had to the blue ’cause I thought going from black to pink would have been the major reaction people would have,” she said. “But I kind of like that people are loving the blue ’cause I’m obsessed with blue. So any shade of blue, I’m loving. I know it’s not natural, but it sort of works in a natural way.” Of course, her hair color might have something to do with her recent split from Russell Brand . Kimberley Pierce, a colorist at Ion Studio in New York City, explained that she’s seen many a newly single chick come in and change up their mood with some new hair color. “They’ll come in for a consult and say, ‘My boyfriend and I just broke up and I want brown hair’ and they’re a blonde,” she said, adding that she usually has some advice for those rash decisions. “The best thing we can do for them is tell them to try a wig on first.” Whatever Katy’s reason for the shocking, eye-catching color change, Pierce added that it really works for her. “I kind of like that she got away from the pink because I feel like we’ve seen that so much. With the blue, it’s more vibrant and definitely she’s on her own with it,” she said. “She’s kind of all the way in with the blue. She’s kind of this candy-coated sort of person. I was with my cousin Danyelle because we were both searching on Twitter looking for details and stuff. Traffic was terrible so we got there a little late. We got our navigation to the spot where the HUGE crowd of Beliebers were. When we were walking by people, they thought it was a class trip. Once we got to borders, it was crazy. They told us if we didn’t calm down, Justin wouldn’t come. We calmed down quickly because of course we wanted Bieber. I was just shaking, and walking in circles. I heard a lot of screaming and since I’m so small I really couldn’t see anything which sucked. I heard Scooter ‘s voice and I was getting more excited. I was jumping up and down, and the crowd got louder again. Once everyone/everything was calm, Justin went into the store and took some pictures. He came out, and it got crazy again. We had to separate into 2 groups to take one big photo with Justin , which you can see in the photo. I was in the first group. (Please don’t make fun of me for wearing a Jacob Black shirt). Scooter had to take the picture and he used someone’s camera. At first, I was ALL the way in the back of the crowd, you couldn’t see me at all. I ran to the end and smiled quickly. I really could have gone in front of Justin, but Scooter was literally about to take the picture. At least i got in it. So after the photo, I ran across to my cousin. I turned around and just looked at him. He was perfect, his hair was just flawless. Once I saw him do the hair flip, oh gosh I died inside. I went into the other group so I can get a second picture, but then I knew that wasn’t the right thing to do because I already got my picture. I stepped out, and just waited for them to be done. After the photos were done, Justin had to leave because he had to go rehearse for SNL. He actually got in a cab and left. I really didn’t want the day to end because it was just amazing. I may not have TALKED to him, but I was at least 10 feet away from him. But I’m not done yet. We heard alot of talking from behind us and saw a little crowd gathered around. A deep penetrating conditioner (meaning heat is required) – sit under dryer for at least 20 minutes) and then follow with a moisturizing conditioner if needed [at all] since it depends on the state of your hair. [Note that a moisturizing conditioner may not always be needed], but your scalp may require [some] attention. [Also beware that] some conditioners can coat the hair and cause weightiness and non-flexibility. My name is Jasmin Alvarez. I’m fifteen, and I’m blind. Before I write anything about my experience, I would like to say that Justin Bieber is an incredible inspiration. He is a person worth meeting. An individual with a beautiful heart. A person that truly cares for his believers. It was back in 2009 when I heard Justin singing for the first time. I remember this day like if it were yesterday. I had just come back from school, and was loaded with tons of work, when I turned on the radio. I heard this amazing song begin to play. Ever since that moment when I heard that song, I felt like I just needed to know whom this person with such a cute little voice, was . I remember that day, after hearing the song, I called my friend, and asked her if she had heard it before. Then, that’s when I found out about Justin Bieber, who was fifteen at the time. Ever since that moment when I first heard him singing ONE TIME, I remember saying, I have to meet this person. He is amazing. Even though, I can’t see him, that didn’t matter to me, because looks are not important. They don’t determine who you are. The only thing that truly determines you as a person is your personality, and the things you do for others. So, I decided to begin my journey in trying to meet him. I knew that what I wanted wasn’t going to be easy, because I knew I was one out of millions of girls who wished the same thing, but I somehow knew that there might be a way of making my dream come true. I spent a long time trying, and trying, and writing endless emails and letters to radio stations, even though I knew at the time I had absolutely no way of standing out. Then, all of a sudden I got inspired, and wrote a song to Justin, called “IF YOU ONLY KNEW”, and I put it on Youtube. (Click here to watch) Things went well with the song, and my three amazing supporters from at @biebsmeetjasmin helped me spread my word to as many people as possible, and tried almost everything, to see if my words could get to Justin. It was hard sometimes, because I thought that no matter what I did, my words would never get to him, but then I thought of Justin’s saying to “NEVER SAY NEVER”, and that’s what helped me put those thoughts aside . Then, on July 9th, 2011, with the help of my amazing supporters, I trended on twitter for the first time . I was able to trend for about seven hours, and during that time, I got many more supporters. I remember everyone started to tweet and tweet Scooter and Justin about me. It was just crazy. I couldn’t even believe it. After about five hours or so of me trending, my friend tells me to check twitter, because Scooter tweeted about me . I started freaking out. I couldn’t even check twitter. I was trembling. When I was able to calm down, I saw his tweet. He said that he knew about me since I first put my video on youtube . That was one of the happiest days of my life. He also followed me on twitter. It was all so amazing, but I knew I couldn’t stop. I had to keep going, until I had Justin face to face. So, I continued trying, and “NEVER SAYING NEVER”. Then, on October 5th, I had the privilege of being followed by Justin Bieber himself. Words can’t say the way I felt. I was just so overjoyed, so full of happiness, I couldn’t believe it. The funny thing was, I ended up finding out that he followed me about three days later, but its ok, just the fact that he followed me, that was the best thing that happened to me. A few weeks later, I found out that Justin was going to be in a morning show , at a radio station. So, the day before, I wrote a letter to one of the staff from the morning show, and asked him if it was possible that I would be able to have a few words with Justin through the phone, and he made it happen. I can’t thank the morning show enough for giving me that chance. Talking to him on the phone was the most amazing thing. He was just so sweet to me, and in the small moment that we talked, I told him everything I felt. I asked him if he knew who I was. I told him I was Jasmin Alvarez. I was the girl that wrote a song for him. He told me that he did know who I was. He told me that he had seen my video, and that he loved the way I sang, and played piano . I was just so happy; I couldn’t hold back the tears. I couldn’t believe that every word I was saying, he was listening. I told him that since that moment when I first heard him sing, the only thing that I dreamed of doing was meeting him. I told him that I was never going to give up. At the end of our conversation, he asked me where I lived. I told him Florida. He told me that he was going to be coming down to Florida soon, because he had to do something for Disney. He said that he was going to see if something could be done, so that when he came down to Florida, we could meet. When I hung up with him, I didn’t even know what to do. I just couldn’t believe that I had actually spoken to Justin Bieber. That after so long, this very special person whom I’ve wanted to meet with all my heart, actually knew who I was, and told me that there would be a chance of us meeting. Nothing else could compare to the happiness that I was feeling in that very moment. On Friday, December 2, 2011, I decided to write a letter to Scooter. In my letter, I told him everything. Everything that I felt, and what it would mean to me, if he could make this possible. I woke up that day at 5 in the morning, and started writing my letter. I sent it around 12 p.m. It was incredible that in the moment that I sent it, so many people started sending it to Scooter and Justin. I stayed very positive, and I somehow had a feeling this was going to happen, and it did. A few hours later, I get a call from a strange number. So, I picked up the phone, and it was Kenny Hamilton. I was so nervous; I didn’t even know what to say. He asked if he could speak to a parent, so I put him on the phone with my dad. He asked us if we would be able to go to his performance in Disney the next day. We said yes. Then, he called us back and told us to be ready that in about an hour we were going to get picked up, go to Orlando stay in a hotel, and the next day, go and meet Justin! We had to pack everything fast, to be ready in an hour. About an hour later, the car got to our house, and picked us up. We drove for about three hours to Orlando. We staid the night, and woke up bright and early the next day. Now, this is the part that I wanted to get to. The part of when I met Justin . We got to the park early in the morning. Before I was taken backstage, I met Kenny. He was so sweet. He came up to me and gave me a hug. He told me he loved my voice. He was amazing. So, we were taken backstage to a room, my mom, dad, and I. I couldn’t believe what I was about to do. I felt so happy and so nervous it was just crazy. So many emotions went through me, as I waited. About fifteen minutes later, Alfredo comes in. I met him. He was amazing too. He told me not to be nervous, that Justin was excited to meet me. A few minutes later, as I sat and waited, that’s when I heard him. He said, Hi Jasmin, how are you? I stood up, and heard him get closer to me. When I felt he was right there, I reached out to him, and we both hugged. It was just amazing! I told him that I couldn’t believe I was actually meeting him. In that short moment that HIM & I were together, everything just felt right. I had finally met this person that has touched my heart, and my life in such a way. I was so nervous. I thought I was going to shut down, and not be able to say anything, but thank god that didn’t happen. He kept the conversation going, so it was just awesome! We took a few pictures together. This is the part that mostly touched me. The part that actually made me see just how amazing and caring he is. Almost at the end of our conversation, he asks me if I had any idea of what he looked like. I said no. Then, he asks me if I wanted to feel his face. I said yes, and he took my hands and put them on his face. So, I was able to feel his hair, and it was very nice and soft. I could tell he was smiling when I touched his face. I also met Scooter, and he was just as amazing as Justin. We spoke for a little too. Then, Justin gave me one last hug, and left. Then, I asked Scooter if I could hug him, and he said yes, so I hugged him. After that, I was taken outside, and I was able to be part of Justin’s amazing performance. He sang beautiful. This has been the most amazing thing that has ever happened in my life, and no matter what, I will never forget this. I don’t have words to thank Scooter, and Justin for making this possible. My Bieber Experience was on November 17th 2011 . I could hardly get through 5 hours of school that day knowing I would be meeting Justin at the Pencils Of Promise Gala that night! I left school at 1 and went straight to the hair salon to get my hair and makeup done! It was 5:30pm when we got into the room where the meet and greet was. While we were waiting for Justin to come, I met Adam Braun and Sophia Bush! I was so excited to meet Justin, I wasn’t functioning. After an hour of just walking around and talking with everyone else in the room, Justin walked in with Scooter, Carin and Alfredo! They told everyone not to scream! Everyone obviously freaked out anyway as he walked in and got ready to take pictures with everyone! I was waiting on the end of the line hoping that I’d be next to him in the picture! I watched Justin take pictures with everyone. As I was waiting, I saw a girl try and get an autograph. She asked him if he could sign her phone and he nicely said that he wasn’t allowed to because they weren’t letting him sign things. I had a sharpie so I figured I was just going to ask anyway when it was my turn and see what happens! It was finally my turn! I walked up to Justin with the sharpie in my hand. I said “Hi” He asked how I was and i said “Good how are you?” He said he was going great. Then I held out my phone to see if he’d sign it! The security guard, (not Kenny someone who was running the meet and greet) saw the sharpie in my hand and saw me holding out my phone and was automatically saying, “Sorry were not doing signatures tonight”. It was amazing! *AT THE GALA* The meet and greet was over and it was time to go to the Gala! We checked in at the front and the lady told us we’d be sitting at table 9, and that there was 60 tables in the room! We walked over to our table which happened to be RIGHT INFRONT OF THE STAGE where people would make speeches and stuff! I was so excited and I really wanted to know where Justin would sit! We sat down and waited for more people to come inside since we were one of the first ones to get there! More and more people started showing up and the tables were filling up. All of a sudden I saw Usher and Jaden Smith come in and sit two tables away from me! I walked up to Jaden and took a picture with him! I was just about to sit back down when I saw Kenny coming towards the table I was at with a lot of people following him. It took me time to realize that the people following him were Justin, Alfredo, Pattie, and Justin’s Grandparents! They all walked over and sat down at table 10. (THE TABLE DIRECTLY NEXT TO MINE!) I just sat there staring at Justin for a good 5 minutes until it was the time where you were just aloud to walk around the room and talk to everyone.
