He was 33 years old. No cause of death was initially given, but Reuters is now reporting that the Clark County Coroner has ruled that Marth died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head. On Monday, the Killers took to their Twitter account to honor Marth’s memory, writing, “Last night we lost our friend Thomas Marth. Our prayers are with his family. There’s a light missing in Las Vegas tonight. Travel well, Tommy.” Last night we lost our friend Thomas Marth. Our prayers are with his family. There’s a light missing in Las Vegas tonight. Curious Case Of Nicki Minaj: Pop Star, MC, Musical Mystery

Above the Buzz breaks down the pop-ularization of the Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded rapper. By Jocelyn Vena Nicki Minaj Photo: Getty Images For a music superstar who has several personas living in her creative genius, it almost makes sense that Nicki Minaj should defy all logic when it comes to musical genre. When she dropped her album Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded this week, she set herself up for two career tracks — one being Nicki Minaj, the tough Queens rapper who spits lines like snakes spit venom, and the other being Nicki Minaj, the colorful, sassy pop songstress who wants to make you pump your fists. So, does this mean she has reloaded herself as a pop star as well as MC and picked up where “Super Bass” left off? Being that her whole persona is built on being colorful, loud, feisty, brash and fashionable, she’s the perfect combination of Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Britney Spears and, yes, Lil Kim, paving her way for what looks to be a career full of success. The kind of success that can satisfy urban radio, which supported her from her grimy mixtape days, but also satiate the appetites of her fans who loved when she blasted “Super Bass” on the Femme Fatale Tour alongside Spears. She’s a conundrum. She exists in two worlds and seems unapologetic about it. Roman Reloaded toes the line, thanks to hip-hop production creds from Hitboy and Pop and Oak — who created hard-rap tracks — and then she gets schizo with RedOne and Dr. Luke, making really, really big pop records. The pop songs work, but given that Nicki has spent so much more time as a rapper, she doesn’t seem to have found her pop voice just yet. They are, at times, mediocre. Her ability to play different characters on the rap songs is what makes her stand out and makes her so engaging. She’s a dude one moment, British another, some other combination of gender and nationality the next. So it feels like finding a pop persona should come a bit easier for her. While she might be wavering at times sonically — trying to nail down what her pop imprint will sound like — visually, she looks like a pop star. She wears colorful wigs, body-hugging couture and costumes that unless you’re a pop star or it’s Halloween, you could never get away with it. Between the music and the look, she’s already a foot and a half in the pop door. Reloaded is her first full entry into the world of pop: It’s confessional at times (“Marilyn Monroe”) and just plain fun others ( “Starships” ), and somewhere in there lies “Nicki: The Pop Star.” She’s not fully realized yet, but she’s bucking the system. And much like Nicki’s persona Roman, she’s aiming to break free from her hip-hop boarding school and play in the pop big leagues. Let’s just hope she never forgets where she came from. She’s definitely a femme fatale, like her pal Britney, and on her way to pop mega-stardom. Share your thoughts on Nicki Minaj’s persona in the comments below! Surprise! Ethan Hawke Haunted House Horror Sinister Sneaks At SXSW

Three days into SXSW and the biggest winner so far has been Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard’s geek-pleasing meta-horror pic Cabin in the Woods , which Lionsgate releases in April. But also in town in search of a SXSW buzz bump is Lionsgate/Summit’s Ethan Hawke -starring haunted house pic Sinister , which debuted as a “secret screening” Saturday night – not the most spectacular secret title possible, especially in contrast to hopeful speculation for a sneak Avengers or Hunger Games debut, and not entirely secret , but fine enough. Sinister , set for release in October, stars Hawke as a novelist so desperate for inspiration that he moves his family into a house whose former inhabitants were recently murdered; he discovers mysterious Super 8 snuff films but begins to lose his grip as the spooky supernatural truth behind the killings emerges. The early consensus here is that Hawke’s performance is impressively moody and the scares effective, but Sinister remains within the constraints of the haunted house subgenre, for better and for worse . But would Sinister have made a great festival secret screening if not for its pedigree? Screenwriter C. Robert Cargill (AKA “Massawyrm”) is a contributor to Ain’t It Cool News, which hosts the annual secret screening sidebar, director Scott Derrickson ( The Day the Earth Stood Still , The Exorcism of Emily Rose ) has at least some genre cred to his name, and producer Jason Blum is one of the masterminds behind the recent wave of modestly-budgeted hit horror acquisitions, having produced the Paranormal Activity films and last year’s Insidious . Cabin in the Woods may have earned the more effusive praise but Sinister seems poised to reap greater benefits from its SXSW debut, considering that it wasn’t on anyone’s radar beforehand. Now instead of being that one movie that sounds like a quickie studio Halloween release, it can at least claim to be that one movie that sounds like a quickie studio Halloween release that played decently to the early birds. We’ll see in seven months if Sinister can play to audiences this well and garner Lionsgate/Summit their own PA / Insidious -style hit. Read more from SXSW 2012 .

Race Matters: Is New Orleans’ New Curfew In The French Quarter Really Meant To Keep Black Folks Away From The Tourists??

This is a tough one to gauge… From a distance, it seemed like common sense: an ordinance meant to keep children away from an open-air night-life zone with more than 350 places to buy booze, an abundance of strip joints and a 300-year-old reputation for iniquity. But last week, as the New Orleans City Council approved a strict curfew for youths 16 and younger in the French Quarter, it sparked an incendiary debate that laid bare some of the tensions over race and police priorities that the Louisiana city — which suffers from the nation’s highest per capita murder rate — is struggling to resolve as it navigates its post-Hurricane Katrina future. The ordinance, which was unanimously approved Thursday, revises a long-standing 11 p.m. curfew on Friday and Saturday nights to 8 p.m. for the French Quarter and part of the nearby Faubourg Marigny neighborhood. In the rest of the city, an 11 p.m. curfew remains on weekends, with an 8 p.m. or 9 p.m. curfew on weekdays, depending on the season. Councilwoman Kristen Gisleson Palmer, whose district includes the French Quarter, wrote the ordinance. The goal, she said, was to protect children from violent incidents like the headline-grabbing shootings last Halloween night, in which two people were killed and a dozen injured by gunfire on or around the packed Bourbon Street party strip. “If we can, in any way, protect children from that, I think it’s very reasonable,” Palmer said. But in a pair of emotional public meetings, a number of residents, most of them African Americans, criticized the idea. Some alleged that the lawmakers were trying to keep low-income blacks out of the sightlines of tourists. “There is this desire not to have these black males in the French Quarter,” said Tracie L. Washington, an attorney who heads the Louisiana Justice Institute, a nonprofit civil rights group. Palmer, who is white, dismissed the allegations. At the council meeting Thursday, critics said the curfew would result in racial profiling of young blacks. One man called it “the equivalent of a black code.” Another African American speaker said that instead of “sugar-coating” the issue, the council should “just tell us straight up — you don’t want us.” Some worried that police would harass black kids going to and from restaurant jobs, or when they were busking or tap-dancing for tips from tourists. Palmer, the councilwoman, said those kids would be left alone because the ordinance exempts, among others, people at work or headed to and from work. Many critics argued that the new curfew hours would seem more fair if they were enforced citywide. Palmer said her staff was working on a new ordinance to do just that. Ronal Serpas, the city’s police superintendent, said he had asked his officers to be more diligent about enforcing the existing citywide curfew since he took charge of the police department in May 2010. Some French Quarter residents have applauded the new curfew, but other New Orleanians wonder whether police, in enforcing the rules, will be distracted from more crucial duties. In many cases, youths breaking the curfew will be told to go home, but in some instances police might take them into custody. Do you think the curfew is racially motivated ? Source More On Bossip! Katy Perry Gets Over A Bad Boy On Leaked Track

Demo for the Jessie James tune hits the Net shortly after Russell Brand files for divorce from Perry. By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry and Russell Brand Photo: Eric Ryan/ Getty Images Katy Perry and Russell Brand have been keeping low profiles since Friday’s divorce announcement, but on a brand-new song that just hit the Net, Perry sings about falling for the wrong guy. The song, which Perry co-wrote, is actually a demo version of the Jessie James track “Bullet.” While the song has many country music flourishes thanks to twangy guitars, the lyrics — minus references to cowboy boots and country accents — work for Perry. She opens with the lines: “My mama warned me about boys like you/ It’s the reason I wear these high-heeled boots/ And let me give you a little piece of advice/ My papa packs heat and he won’t think twice.” And the song’s big chorus is signature Perry. On the sing-along refrain, Perry belts out, “I’m a bullet and I’m headed/ Straight for your heart/ Be careful what you start/ I’m a bullet and I’m headed/ Straight for your heart/ It’s gonna leave a mark.” Although the song eventually landed on James’ 2009 self-titled debut, the timing of the leak coincides with the news of Perry’s split from comedian Brand after a little more than a year. Brand was spotted in his native England on Saturday, one day after the news broke of their breakup, while Perry, who has yet to speak about the split, is slated to perform at two concerts this month: one on January 19 in Jakarta, Indonesia, and another on January 22 in Manila, in the Philippines. When MTV News spoke to some experts about Perry and Brand’s breakup , they noted that the divorce didn’t come as a surprise to them. “From the get-go, I thought they were a sort of odd, mismatched pair,” David Caplan, a celebrity news editor who has worked at publications including People and Star, told us. “She’s so glamorous, pop and sexy, and he is diametrically not like that. He’s a nice and funny guy, and from my encounters with her, I found her to be funny, have a sarcastic edge and a blast, but they weren’t a match. Plus, she’s more of a partier than he now, so their lifestyles were at odds.” What do you think of Katy and Russell’s decision to divorce? Tell us what you think on our Facebook page.
