Adam Sandler’s Box-Office Victory Over Justin Bieber Explained

Experts weigh in on how ‘Just Go With It’ beat ‘Never Say Never.’ By Eric Ditzian Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler in “Just Go With It” Photo: Sony Pictures Contrary to Bieber Fever-induced speculation that “Never Say Never” was going to gross seven gajillion dollars this weekend, Justin Bieber’s 3-D concert flick fell just short of the #1 box-office spot. Instead, Adam Sandler’s weakly reviewed rom-com “Just Go With It” came out on top , with the film’s estimated $31 million haul just besting the $30.3 million that “Never Say Never” took in. Both films deserve B.O. kudos, but the question remains: With a rabid fanbase and a premium ticket price, why didn’t Bieber’s movie do better? After all, “Hannah Montana/ Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour” opened in 2,400 fewer theaters in 2008 yet managed to open with $31.1 million. So what happened? “I think two reasons why Justin didn’t beat Miley were that the ‘Hannah Montana’ movie came at the beginning of the 3-D boom, so it was more of a special and rare event,” Gitesh Pandya, editor of BoxOfficeGuru.com, told MTV News. “Plus it was promoted as a one-week-only run, so fans felt there would not be another time to see it. In addition, tickets were $15 each for Miley where they varied across the country for Justin but were mostly lower.” There’s also potentially a gender-based explanation, according to Jeff Bock, box-office analyst for Exhibitor Relations . “Tween girls showing their ‘love’ for another girl is widely acceptable, because at that age, they are more than likely to have mostly girls as friends,” he said. “As a tween-ager, often admitting you like boys is still a bit of a taboo, which makes the nearly $30 million debut of Biebs all the more impressive.” The “Never Say Never” audience, it should be noted, was 84 percent female, according to Paramount’s exit data. “Just Go With It,” meanwhile, appealed to a vastly different demographic. So the two films didn’t suffer from audience cannibalization. The truth just might be that $30.3 million, at this point in time, is as high as “Never Say Never” could ever go. As Bock put it, the movie “definitely maxed out its box-office appeal over the weekend.” That being said, it remains impressive that “Just Go With It” — which received a measly 18 pecent freshness rating at the Rotten Tomatoes review aggregator — was able to notch a $30 million-plus opening. To begin with, while it didn’t benefit from premium 3-D ticket prices, Sandler’s comedy debuted on about 700 more screens than “Never Say Never.” And though Bieber is new to Hollywood, Sandler has become one of its most reliable brands. “Reviews are irrelevant in Sandler’s world,” Pandya said. “He makes formulaic comedy vehicles that are easy to digest and require little thinking and a lot of people like that sort of thing. It’s the same formula for hit sitcoms but used in a multiplex. Say what you want about his talents, but the man has had $100 million hits in 10 of the last 13 years and has accomplished this without doing sequels, even though it seems he plays the same guy every time.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Just Go With It” and “Justin Bieber: Never Say Never.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Celebrity of the Year Finalist #3: Miley Cyrus!

With 2010 drawing to a close, it is with much pride that THG unveils its 10 finalists for its prestigious, Fourth Annual Celebrity of the Year award. These stars all gave us their best, their worst, their nude pics (sometimes) and their scandals (often). This month, THG honors that greatness. After the Jersey Shore cast fist-pumped its way to #4 , we present one of our most polarizing figures at #3 … Miley Cyrus! Perhaps more than any celebrity we cover, 2010 was a year of ups and downs for Miley, lows and highs ( literally! ). It began with the official announcement that Cyrus would be saying farewell to the role of Hannah Montana, and it ended with a bong-smoking controversy that epitomized the lengths this star had gone to over the past 12 months to prove she was transforming into an adult artist. In between, Miley… … dated Liam Hemsworth multiple times. … sang a duet with Bret Michaels. … hosted the 2010 MuchMusic Video Awards. … got slammed by critics for her portrayal in The Last Song. … made out with a female dancer to prove her maturity. … feuded with Perez Hilton over that blogger being an idiot . … rarely wore pants. … suffered through her parents’ divorce. … turned 18. As you can tell, it was a year of starring roles and scandalous actions for Miley Cyrus. Ardent supporters stuck by her side, arguing that she was simply growing up as a person and a celebrity. Critics, meanwhile, crushed the star for her misguided decisions, coming down on her for abandoning a young fan base and trying too hard to prove she was evolving. Where do you stand? It’s a question we’ve asked often and will likely continue to do so. This divisiveness is a significant reasons why Miley had such an impact on pop culture in 2010.

Miley Cyrus Accidental Boob flash

Now that she’s eighteen, Miley Cyrus really hasn’t wasted any time getting some trashy pictures of herself out on the internet. Not that I care, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. I’m not complaining, I love accidental tit flashes, I’m just saying she’s filthy rich. Enjoy.

‘Harry Potter’ Composer Takes Us Inside ‘Deathly Hallows’ Score

‘That’s quite a challenge to know that every single note that you write will be heard,’ Alexandre Desplat tells MTV News of global ‘Potter’ audience. By Kara Warner Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint in “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” Photo: Warner Bros. With “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1” continuing to rake in major box-office cash , the fan appetite for all things Potter has yet to be satisfied. Here at MTV News, we’re doing our part to serve the public’s Potter thirst by getting fans as close to the action as possible. First with juicy interviews and fun videos , and now with a few behind-the-scenes features that highlight the nuts and bolts of Potter filmmaking . In this latest installment, we turn our attention toward what is heard, not seen: the film’s score, created by celebrated and highly sought-after composer Alexandre Desplat. When MTV News caught up with the very busy man (in the past five years, he has composed scores for at least four films per year, including “The Twilight Saga: New Moon,” “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” and “Fantastic Mr. Fox,” to name a few), we talked about incorporating John Williams’ very distinct theme into his own work and how the fantastical elements in the world of Potter allowed the introduction of new, unique instruments. MTV : With so many projects on your plate, when do you sleep? Alexandre Desplat : Well, because I was expecting your phone call, I was on the edge of actually taking a five-minute nap, because it’s been a long day and I don’t sleep much, honestly. It’s a crazy life because I’ve always dreamed of being a film composer. I’ve never dreamed of being a concert composer or an opera composer; I wanted to work for movies, and now I have all these incredible projects coming towards me. … And all these films, of course, they collide because they’re late or they’re early, and so I have no life. I just work 18 hours a day, every day. And I don’t go on holidays. And so, I guess I will die young. [ Laughs. ] MTV : In jumping on a “Harry Potter” film, which has had several different composers over the course of seven films, how do you go about incorporating John Williams’ very distinct theme, while still making it your own? Desplat : My education as a film composer you can’t not — if you like the orchestra like I do, if you are a symphonist like I am — you can’t not listen to John Williams’ work. So I knew, of course, his work on the “Harry Potter” films, on the early films that he did, and when it came to the theme, which is the old theme, it became just a conversation to have with the director where and how we could use it. And actually, there was not so many opportunities, just because this movie is different from the previous ones. It’s not in Hogwarts anymore. It’s not in the school, and they’re now young adults. And the only moments where we could use it was when we wanted to refer to their childhood and to this loss of innocence, which is actually the main theme of this film. These three young adults are losing childhood, and they’re moving forward to dangers and adulthood. So we’ve just very carefully used it here and there; not much, sadly. And actually, when I was thinking about the score and anticipating what I had to do, I was playing with this theme, because I really love it and I was happy to be able to arrange it differently. MTV : In taking on a film like “Harry Potter” and its fantasy elements, does that enable you to bring in new musical sounds or sounds that you might not use normally? Do you have a favorite kind of unique instrument that you were able to bring in that you might not normally bring into a film score? Desplat : Yes, there are two things that we tried to bring. It is a way of using a lot of strings, sometimes doubling the string orchestra, on top of the first one, with different lines or adding more weight to some lines. Some pieces are really literally handwritten by string players, on top, all together. Of course we use the brass and the percussion and all that. It doesn’t make the sound louder, but deeper and more string-oriented. The other thing is a few elements here and there. I played some jazzy flute in a piece I wrote, and one of the percussion players, he plays this new instrument that was invented a few years ago, which is kind of in-between a steel drum and a — what could I compare it to? — and a gamelan that you play with your hands or with mallets. You can hear it in the “Lovegood” piece and it’s also blending instruments, which I like to do, that you hear there in the score. MTV : How many musicians did you work with on this undertaking? Desplat : The London Symphony, which was at the peak of 105, I think. Recorded at Abbey Road Studios. MTV : How was this experience different from the films you’ve done in the past? Desplat : It was different because it was “Harry Potter,” and “Harry Potter” is a global experience. It’s not just a movie that your friends will see or just the French people will see or just the Brits will see. No, it’s a global thing, and that’s quite a challenge to know that every single note that you write will be heard. Even though I always try to make sure that my first listeners, who are actually the players and musicians who are going to perform, I want them to be challenged. I want them to respect what I write, so it’s for them that I write before anything. Actors, of course, have been tailored to musically, and with the director. It’s with them that I want to have this exchange, this musical bonding. So it’s a big challenge to achieve, and again, it’s number seven of the franchise, so it was a big thing for me. Bella Thorne Poised To ‘Shake It Up’ On Disney Channel

Actress, dubbed ‘the new Miley Cyrus,’ wears out her dancing shoes. By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Matt Elias Bella Thorne Photo: MTV News Following in the footsteps of Miley and Selena, there’s a new starlet poised for Disney-backed stardom: Bella Thorne, star of “Shake It Up.” Thorne is the newest young Hollywood starlet to helm her own show on the network, and many are saying she’s got the chops that will launch her into the entertainment stratosphere, just like her “Hannah Montana” predecessor. MTV News caught up with the budding household name, who broke down the premise behind “Shake It Up” and chatted about what it’s like being the latest face on the Disney roster. ” ‘Shake It Up’ is about two best friends, CeCe Jones and Rocky Blue, and they want to live their dreams as professional dancers on a TV show called ‘Shake It Up Chicago,’ ” Thorne explained. “Basically, it’s about following your dreams and their journeys and school and friends and everything else.” Thorne, who scored the part after auditioning last fall, said she had to go through a slew of meetings before winning the role. She also sacrificed a beloved item in her wardrobe hoofing it for the part. “I have these new ballet flats — they’re ruined,” Thorne complained good-naturedly. “Yup, they’re completely ruined from all the dancing we went through.” Like her character, Thorne is tasked with busting moves for her dream job. However, despite landing such a rigorously dance-centric gig, she was a newcomer to mastering choreography on a professional level. “I’ve only been dancing since I got ‘Shake It Up,’ ” she revealed. “I mean, I’ve been dancing all my life, but I never did any classes or anything like that. So [I learned] just watching shows and freestyling.” For Thorne, picking up a few new steps here and there isn’t a problem, since she’s carved a place for herself as part of the Disney family — an entertainment powerhouse she’s proud to call home. “It feels amazing,” she gushed. “You can’t really describe the feeling, because I’m so happy and blessed to be here, and the rest of our talented cast have worked so hard on ‘Shake It Up.’ And we all put all of our heart and soul into every episode, and we just hope that people like it just as much as we do.” Are you a fan of Disney star Bella Thorne? As Miley Cyrus Turns 18, What’s Next?

Find out what the birthday girl has planned for 2011. By Jocelyn Vena Miley Cyrus at her 18th birthday on Sunday Photo: Jeff Vespa/MC/WireImage Miley Cyrus is 18. The “Hannah Montana” star is finally able to vote, and that means she has a whole future ahead of her in the world of music and movies. As 2010 wraps up, it seems that 2011 will be just as busy for the teen star, and while she’s taking a break from music (not that you’d be able to tell, thanks to her bevy of music videos and awards-show performances), she has a bustling film career for fans to follow in the coming 12 months. Cyrus recently wrapped her Ashley Greene co-starring flick “LOL: Laughing Out Loud,” which saw the star not only filming Stateside but also in Paris. The movie follows teens who rely on the Internet to socialize, leaving their parents ( Miley’s mom is played by Demi Moore ) confused by the modern relationships their children are in. “[Miley] is a true professional, and she truly has a wonderful family,” Moore said about her teen co-star. “It really shows.” The veteran actress plays the overbearing, confounded mom of Cyrus’ character, who gets freaked out after accidentally reading her daughter’s journal and finding out just how out of touch they have become. Miley is also getting ready for some action for her next role in the flick “So Undercover,” where she’ll play “a tough, street-smart private eye hired by the FBI to go undercover in a college sorority.” The flick means that the star will have to learn to fight for the role. “She’s basically this chick who grows up as a super tomboy, and she’s an FBI agent and gets thrown into a bunch of girls that she doesn’t understand because she’s been around her dad, who’s been in the FBI his whole life,” Miley explained. “And basically, by having to go undercover and be someone that she’s not, she kind of finds the person she is, because she realizes she doesn’t have to carry the weight on her shoulder of what her dad was, and she can be her own person.” While Miley has finished shooting “Hannah Montana,” her hit Disney series won’t go off the air until 2011. “I think that she’s growing with the show, and I think it’s such a great platform for her,” her pal Selena Gomez told MTV News about the star’s plans to walk away. “And she’s lived up to it as wonderfully as she could, and I think she continues to carry it, but she’s ready for other things.” Until then, Cyrus will hang out with her family for her big day, something that she was looking forward to the last time we spoke with her. “I’m not going to go crazy; [just] have a fun party and then maybe take a vacation with my family … because that would be really cool. I think we need time to all be together,” she said. “So that would be rad if we could all go to the beach or something. … [I have] no idea [where we’re going]; somewhere near water. I’m a water baby; I have to be near the water and I love doing scuba and going out and being on a boat.” Share your birthday wishes for Miley in the comments!
