Did Oprah Winfrey Ask an Australian Shop to Remove Blackface Dolls?

Remember how Harry Connick Jr. guest-judged an Australian talent competition TV show last year, and was put in the awkward position of having to tell a Jackson 5 tribute band in full-on blackface that their act was wildly offensive ? You may not, but Oprah Winfrey — who flew 300 screaming fans Down Under last week — probably does, and she’s allegedly hellbent on eradicating the country’s racist traditions, one golliwog “washerwoman” doll at a time.

‘American Idol’ Fans Want Jennifer Lopez, Shania Twain As Judges

‘Idol’ followers also name Harry Connick Jr. and Steven Tyler as good picks to judge the 10th season. By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by James Lascina Jennifer Lopez Photo: WireImage “American Idol” fans are very opinionated when it comes to the judging panel. Auditions for the 10th season are in full swing, however, as the Fox hit continues to comb the country for new talent, producers still have not confirmed a final judges lineup. Fans waiting to check out the American Idols Live! Tour in Los Angeles on Friday (August 13), offered suggestions about who should dish out feedback when the next season kicks off. “Gene Simmons would have been amazing,” George Garcia told MTV News. “Howard Stern too because Howard Stern [has] that mouth.” Garcia said that Jennifer Lopez, a much-rumored addition to the “Idol” panel, could have added “flavor, but I heard she was asking for outrageous stuff.” Diane Emerson is rooting for onetime mentor Harry Connick Jr. to return to the show as a permanent judge. “When he helped them be a mentor, he helped them so much, each and every one of them,” Emerson said. “He knew what he was talking about and I think he should become a judge.” Chloe Coleman is on Team J. Lo and said, “Jennifer Lopez would be interesting.” Kayla Erath said Lopez’ star power would mean an uptick in viewers. “I think it would be cool if J. Lo’s on it because she’s really famous and a lot more people will watch if another famous person is on it.” Sarah Garman said that she’s down to have Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler join the amateur talent behemoth “to add a little rock [to] it.” “That’d be hilarious,” Garman smiled. Her pal Jill Davy added, “Yeah, I think they need some rock and roll.” The ladies also said they were up for another buzzed-about singer, Shania Twain, to take a seat at the judges’ table. Garman mentioned that Shania would bring “a little country, a little twang,” to the competition. Davy also pointed out that Twain, who appeared as a guest judge on the ninth season, already has experience. “Shania’s done it before,” said Davy. Chloe Song said that the folks behind “Idol” would probably do well with any of the big-name celebs that have been mentioned as possible additions to the show. “I think Steven Tyler, Shania Twain and J. Lo are all really well-known singers so I think they’ll have really good thoughts and opinions on the ‘American Idol’ contestants,” Song said. Amanda Slater didn’t single out one person in particular but insisted that “Idol” needs someone with the same blunt approach to giving feedback as former judge Simon Cowell. “I think it needs to be someone that can be harsh like Simon,” Slater said. “Otherwise [the show is] too nice. Simon gave the real answers. He was tough but it was needed.” Danielle Slater said that whoever joins the panel next, needs to know what he or she is talking about. “[The show needs] somebody that’s good with music [and has] a lot of experience,” Danielle said. Chris Isaak Considered as Next American Idol Judge

We seem to be down to three. With American Idol auditions about to start up again around the nation, the show is anxious to name a replacement for Simon Cowell. With Bret Michaels already campaigning for the gig , and Harry Connick Jr. remaining a candidate, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed a third name for the job: Chris Isaak. According to that publication, the singer has been brought in twice for an interview with Idol producers. Isaak has guest-starred on a couple TV shows and is probably best known for his 1991 hit, “Wicked Game.” But it seems hard to believe many in Idol ‘s core audience have heard of him. Michaels would be the best choice if the show is going after pop culture relevance, while Connick – an actor, singer and composer – would deliver the most versatility. Who do you think should take Simon’s spot?

Support Surly, Talent-Thwacking Harry Connick Jr. For Idol!

It’s not really “news” that Harry Connick Jr. is a contestant favorite to replace Simon Cowell on American Idol . But I just like to throw my own quick endorsement his way, if only for his admirable, riot-sparking work last year on the Aussie talent show Hey Hey It’s Saturday . Only an honest man can enliven the flagging franchise, and besides Cowell, only Connick has the proven ability to really torpedo an act on national television. I say yes, yes, a hundred times yes. Yes? [ Zap2It ]

Lee Dewyze Gets Back In The ‘American Idol’ Race With ‘That’s Life’

‘If this was the last night of performances, you would have won this whole thing,’ Ellen says on Sinatra Night. By Larry Carroll Lee Dewyze on “American Idol” Tuesday Photo: Fox When Frank Sinatra sang “That’s Life,” the song became a masterpiece, a devil-may-care case study in the art of cool, careless crooning about enduring the bad days. On Tuesday night (May 4), Lee Dewyze made the song his own, simultaneously conquering his own demons and the specter of the Chairman of the Board. The spiky-haired “American Idol” dark horse took on a signature tune from Ol’ Blue Eyes for the show, with necktie appropriately undone. Accompanied on a Hammond organ by mentor Harry Connick Jr., Dewyze straddled the top of the instrument as if paying tribute to the bar-embracing persona of Sinatra, backed by a bluesy band. Although feisty Frank likely wouldn’t have endorsed Dewyze’s untucked shirt, he could surely appreciate the way the 26-year-old Illinois singer poured himself into lines like “Each time I find myself flat on my face/ I pick myself up and get back in the race.” With the performance, Dewyze undoubtedly put himself back into the heat of the “Idol” race. “If this was the last night of performances,” judge Ellen Degeneres beamed with approval, “you would have won this whole thing.” “You gave it a 110 percent,” Simon Cowell agreed. “It was the best performance of the night.” “Another great arrangement by a Louisiana boy,” Randy Jackson said of Connick’s efforts. “You stayed your rocker self. I loved it.” “You can win this thing,” Kara DioGuardi said, before urging Dewyze to go home and write down “I can win this thing” 100 times. Originally composed by Dean Kay and Kelly Gordon for Sinatra’s album of the same name, “That’s Life” was a huge hit when it debuted in 1966. In the years since, the song has been covered by everyone from Bono to Aretha Franklin to David Lee Roth, and now, perhaps the next American Idol. What did you think of Lee’s performance?
