Guess Robert Downey Jr.’s Projected Avengers Payday

The Marvel Studios front office may be notoriously loaded with cheapskates who’ve built a multibillion-dollar empire from the ground up in less than five years thanks to thrifty dealmaking, but at least one star has done enough franchise grunt work to get paid for the record-shattering blockbuster that is The Avengers . And when I say “paid,” I mean paid . Let’s hear it for Robert Downey Jr.! Or at least for Robert Downey Jr.’s agents, according to THR : According to multiple knowledgeable sources, Iron Man/Tony Stark is set for a highflying payday of about $50 million once box-office bonuses and backend compensation are factored in. (Two sources claim the number could go higher than $50 million once the ultimate box-office haul of Avengers is known, but another cautions that it could be years before the final number is known.) While on par with the upper echelon of franchise movie stars, that number blows away his superhero co-stars, all of whom will make a small fraction of Downey’s total, even as Avengers has a shot at topping the final Harry Potter film’s $1.32 billion global haul. Why the difference? When Marvel’s Iron Man grossed a surprising $585 million worldwide in 2008, Downey’s reps at CAA and the Hansen Jacobson law firm renegotiated a deal to include what multiple sources say is a slice of Marvel’s revenue from future movies in which he plays Iron Man (one source puts it in the 5 percent to 7 percent range; another source disputes the percentage. Marvel and Downey’s reps declined comment). Of course, profit participation is nothing new — Jack Nicholson probably just earned another $1,000 for Batman in the time it took to write this post — but compared to Marvel’s deals with Jeremy Renner (roughly $2 million-$3 million plus bonuses), Samuel L. Jackson (roughly $6 million plus bonuses) and the rest, Downey is far and away the Avenger with the mostest. Or… however that phrase goes. No wonder Captain America wants to kick Iron Man’s ass. Will ‘Hunger Games’ Rule The 2012 MTV Movie Awards?

Leading the pack with eight nominations, the Gary Ross-directed film could replace ‘Twilight’ as the film to beat. By Fallon Prinzivalli Jennifer Lawrence in “The Hunger Games” Photo: Lionsgate As “The Hunger Games” continues to dominate the worldwide box office, the announcement came Monday that the film is nominated for eight MTV Movie Awards . It leads the list with the most nominations alongside Kristen Wiig’s Oscar-nominated comedy, “Bridesmaids.” “The Hunger Games,” the first of three (possibly four) films adapted from Suzanne Collins’ dystopian saga, is on course to break $400 million in earnings domestically . With break-out performances by the cast, it’s no surprise that they’re contenders for an array of categories. Entering their first ever MTV Movie Awards, Jennifer Lawrence and company are up for Movie of the Year, Best Cast, Best Female Performance (Lawrence), Best Male Performance ( Josh Hutcherson ), Breakthrough Performance ( “Liam Hemsworth ), Best On-Screen Transformation ( Elizabeth Banks ), Best Fight (Lawrence and Hutcherson vs. Alexander Ludwig ), and Best Kiss (Lawrence and Hutcherson). The fan-favorite category of Best Kiss has Lawrence and Hutcherson up against their biggest competition: Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, and Emma Watson and Rupert Grint. With “Twilight” gracing fewer categories, there’s a good chance Twihards will be out for blood, vigorously voting for their beloved vampires to make sure they take home the golden popcorn for every nomination. Plus, Robsten has been the reigning champion for the past three years, always teasing that kiss the fans are hoping will finally happen this year. And as this is the last chance for Watson and Grint to nab the award, we may see the Potterheads’ determination win out in the end. This award is anyone’s guess, but if we take a look at the figures, “Hunger Games” already has a promising start. As the premiere film in a franchise first made popular by the books, its opening weekend saw bigger numbers than both the first “Twilight” and “Harry Potter” films. We may be on the verge of a new era where fanged teeth and wands are out and bow and arrows are in. Will we see the same numbers when it comes down to the ultimate award: Movie of the Year? Not only is “Hunger Games” battling it out again with “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1” and “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows, Part 2,” but the category also features two Oscar-nominated films, “The Help” and “Bridesmaids.” Katniss and company are going to need to break out more than a few snares to dominate this one. It’s a good thing they already have a big army of fans on their side. With all the money “Hunger Games” enthusiasts have been pouring into its box-office reign lately, it’s safe to assume their dedication to will bode well for the actors who play our favorite citizens of Panem. It’s anyone’s year, but the odds are definitely in its favor. Do you think “The Hunger Games” will reign at the MTV Movie Awards, or will “Twilight” hold on to the crown? Leave your comment below! ‘Avengers’ Already A Smash Overseas

Superhero movie, due Stateside in early May, is already breaking records in foreign markets. By Kevin P. Sullivan Chris Evans as Captain America In “The Avengers” Photo: Walt Disney Studios The Avengers have already started to assemble overseas, and early box-office reports are spelling very good things for Marvel’s tentpole. The superhero movie that brings together Captain America, Iron Man, Thor and the Hulk has reportedly made $12.5 million in a handful of foreign markets and is already breaking records, according to The Hollywood Reporter. In Australia, ” The Avengers ” has already banked $7 million, a total that has only been beaten by ” Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 ,” which earned $8 million during its Down Under debut. The foreign rollout has proven lucrative elsewhere, too, as France added $3 million to the total. Early tracking estimated that “The Avengers” could make more than $150 million during its early May opening weekend in the U.S. That would put the film in the same class as “Spider-Man 3,” “The Hunger Games,” “The Dark Knight” and “Deathly Hallows, Part 2.” This could potentially mean the biggest debut for a Marvel Studios movie yet. ” Iron Man 2 ” currently holds that honor. The Robert Downey Jr. sequel opened to $128 million back in 2010. That’s followed by the first ” Iron Man ” at $98 million. “The Avengers” has the added advantage of higher ticket prices. The film is playing both in 3-D and in IMAX 3-D, so each individual ticket will add more to the final total. “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” saw a large bump in its record-breaking run thanks in part to higher prices attached to 3-D showings.
