Great Moments in Weinsteinian Persuasion: My Week With Marilyn Edition

“As I went around the room, looking for a thumbs up, I saw their faces reluctant to give it to me. So I pulled out the trump card. Michelle Williams. Now my girls are lucky enough to know Michelle Williams and they know her daughter too. She is as sweet to my daughters as she is to her own. When a hair colorist had made a mistake on one of the girls, Michelle did an operation worthy of Bond, James Bond, and got it all sorted and fixed. In my house, that made her a folk hero. And that proved to be the closer.” [ Huffington Post ]

Oscar Predictions: Even Harvey Weinstein Is a Sucker For George Clooney

“I love George Clooney’s movie, The Ides of March ,” Harvey Weinstein raved recently when asked for an Academy Award prediction. “I love politics, and this movie is the best political movie — it’s gotta be right up there with the best of the best. Seriously, it is the toughest, most incisive, no-bullshit movie I’ve seen this year. And [Ryan] Gosling hits it out of the ballpark. And the entire cast is great. Clooney just nailed it. It’s an appropriate movie for these times. So Oscar prediction? That that gets nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor. And it’s not mine.” [ Vulture ]

TRAILER: Unauthorized: The Harvey Weinstein Project Looks Pretty Much Like Harvey Weinstein Project

As a longtime Harveyologist, few prospects on the movie beat seem more appealing to me than an unauthorized documentary about Harvey Weinstein. I mean, Harvey Weinstein! Just saying the name conjures both quivering fanboy chills and the faint, foggy effluvia of sweat and Diet Coke wafting over a freshly vacuumed and Febrezed red carpet. Harvey. Weinstein. Stirring, no? So why, why does the first trailer for Unauthorized: The Harvey Weinstein Project leave me so cold?

Report: The Weinstein Company Bringing Chocolat, Cinema Paradiso to Broadway

It looks like The King’s Speech won’t be the only Weinstein Company film headed to Broadway in the near future. The New York Post reports that Harvey and Bob Weinstein are planning to “mine the Miramax and Weinstein Co. vaults for material for eight to 10 projects.” Already on deck is Finding Neverland , with Chocolat and perhaps Cinema Paradiso on the way. Maybe this could be a way for the notoriously sequel-averse Harvey Weinstein to continue Rounders ? “Pay That Man His Money” could be a show-stopper! [ NYP ]

Today in Our Idiot Brother Marketing: Paul Rudd Loves Fantasy Football

On the heels of that very-funny Funny or Die video featuring Paul Rudd and Harvey Weinstein discussing marketing strategies for Our Idiot Brother , comes Rudd revealing his secret shame on the cover of the latest edition of The Hollywood Reporter . Unlike some other celebs, however, his addiction is slightly less scandalous; like millions of Americans — and other Hollywood stars like Ashton Kutcher — Rudd plays fantasy football. “It’s just so super nerdy. It sucks,” the Our Idiot Brother star told the trade magazine. “I wish I didn’t like it as much as I do. It’s a sickness.”

Julian Schnabel Storms UN to Premiere Miral, Smack Critics

Despite protests from opponents accusing the film of bias, the US premiere of director Julian Schnabel’s latest, Miral , unspooled as planned Monday night at United Nations headquarters in New York. And while a redoubtable list of friends and heavy hitters — including Sean Penn, Robert De Niro and Josh Brolin — materialized in support, Schnabel had words for the resistance.

DVD: How Jackass Raised the Gross-Out Comedy Bar

One of the interesting ideas in the original graphic novel Watchmen is the notion that in a world where meta-humans actually existed, superhero comics would become obsolete. After all, why read about the fictional adventures of Superman or The Flash when Dr. Manhattan is in the newspaper every day? I thought about that while watching the Farrelly Brothers’ lackadaisical new comedy Hall Pass — one scene (involving a sneeze and an explosive bowel movement) was clearly meant to shock and amuse us, but the audience seemed unmoved. And it occurred to me that any fictional gross-out is destined to pale next to the real stuff you can see in Jackass 3 (out this week in a Blu-Ray/DVD combo pack from Paramount Home Entertainment).

REVIEW: Visceral Jane Eyre Is All Brontë, and Wholly Alive

Calling a book a classic is a peculiar damnation, a way of simultaneously placing it on a pedestal and shutting it into a musty old box. As much as we all groan when we hear that yet another great book is set to be “ruined” by some assuredly hapless filmmaker, movies are often the only thing that can save books from themselves — or, rather, from our calcified ideas of what certain books have to be.

MPAA Whisperer Harvey Weinstein Gets PG-13 For Miral

Good news, kids: Less than 48 hours after Julian Schnabel’s public dismay over the “R” rating for his new, youth-focused Middle East drama Miral , the MPAA has come around with a PG-13. A tsunami of youngs will no doubt ensue at the art house when the film opens March 25 via… who else? The Weinstein Company, whose MPAA -whispering godfather Harvey Weinstein also happened to shake off Blue Valentine ‘s NC-17 last fall. (To say nothing of his forcing of The King’s Speech’s R-rated square peg into a PG-13 round hole .) Congrats to the whole team! [ THR ]

Michael Moore’s Weinstein Lawsuit: Shady Accounting or Oscar-Timed Hit?

Earlier today we were tickled by tales of Bob and Harvey Weinstein’s genius early ’80s sexifying shenanigans , but this afternoon brings allegations of shady accounting and legal chicanery lobbied by none other than former collaborator Michael Moore, who claims the Weinsteins deceived him out of millions in profits from his 2004 documentary Fahrenheit 9/11 . Naturally, we wonder: What’s this mean for the Oscar race?
