A source told OKMagazine.com exclusively that Beyoncé has ordered her husband to “lose 20lbs” immediately because she is not happy with his figure—and is worried about his health! “She’s so over his size and thinks it’s ridiculous that he doesn’t take care of his health,” the insider told OK! “She’s worried about his cholesterol, his blood pressure, everything, and wants him to lose weight urgently.” Jay is “very inactive,” the source said, because he “spends hours in the studio or in his office.” And even during the couple’s tour or his own shows, Jay Z is “not the type of performer to jump about dancing like she does.” Queen Bey has already taken measures to get him back in tip-top shape, like putting him on her vegan cleanse, which the rapper blogged about last year. Is mental health taboo in the African American community? Black People Experience Depression At Higher Rates Than Whites Depression is a huge health concern among African Americans — particularly women — but mental health is often stigmatized in the Black community. Although it can impact people from all walks of life, cultural habits and historical experiences can cause depression to be expressed and addressed differently among Black women. Via Psych Central reports: “During slavery you were supposed to be the strong one. You weren’t supposed to speak. You were supposed to just do,” said Esney M. Sharpe, founder and CEO of the Bessie Mae Women’s Health Center in East Orange, N.J., which offers health services for uninsured and underserved women. “…Our moms and our grandmothers always told us to suppress. Just be quiet, chalk it up, get up, dress up, fix your face, put on your best outfit and just keep going,” she said. Depression affects about 19 million Americans. Data from a study published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that women (4 percent versus 2.7 percent of men) and African-Americans (4 percent) are significantly more likely to report major depression than Whites (3.1 percent). But the CDC also finds that just 7.6 percent of African-Americans sought treatment for depression compared to 13.6 percent of the general population in 2011. Because the findings show that women — regardless of race or ethnicity — are more likely than men to experience depression and African-Americans experience depression at higher rates than Whites, then Black women in turn also experience high rates of depression compared to the general population. It should be noted that despite other studies showing conflicting data that are at odds with these findings, the CDC appears to be more reliable because it is the most recent study of its kind. Black women are among the most undertreated groups for depression in the nation, which can have serious consequences for the African-American community. “I’ve tried to commit suicide over 15 times. I have the scars on my arms of wanting to kill myself and not even know why,” said 45-year-old Tracey Hairston, a member of the health center who has bipolar disorder. A report published by researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison found that poverty, parenting, racial and gender discrimination put Black women — particularly low-income Black women — at greater risk for major depressive disorder (MDD). Depression is not only treated at lower rates in the African-American community, particularly among Black women, but of those who do receive treatment, many don’t receive adequate treatment. Hector M. Gonzalez, Ph.D., and colleagues at Wayne State University, Detroit, found that overall, only about half of Americans diagnosed with major depression in a given year receive treatment for it. But only one-fifth receive treatment consistent with current practice guidelines. African-Americans had some of the lowest rates of use of depression care. Because Blacks, particularly Black women, experience higher rates of depression than their White female or Black male counterparts but receive lower rates of adequate treatment, they remain one of the most undertreated groups in the United States. Several major reasons account for high rates of depression and low rates of treatment for depression among African American women. A lack of adequate health care can significantly contribute to low rates of treatment among African-Americans, particularly African-American women. More than 20 percent of Black Americans are uninsured compared to fewer than 12 percent of Whites, according to the Department of Health Human Services. You can’t pray the pain away! Damn homie…if it ain’t one thing it’s the next. Rob Ford Diagnosed With Cancer Known in The States primarily for his crack-rock antics , Mayor Rob Ford has hit yet another rough patch in his health. Fresh out of a stint in rehab , instead of struggling with addiction, this time around he’s grappling with cancer. Via The Sun News Network : Mayor Rob Ford is now facing the fight of his life with a rare form of cancer. Dr. Zane Cohen, the head of Ford’s clinical care team, revealed the grim diagnosis of pleomorphic liposarcoma on Wednesday at Mount Sinai Hospital. The cancer news came just days after Ford bowed out of the mayor’s race and less than three months after he returned from rehab for alcohol and drugs, vowing to turn his life around. With Ford’s permission, Cohen confirmed that the 12-cm by 12-cm abdominal tumour discovered last week is a malignant liposarcoma. Doctors have also found a small nodule that is part of the same tumour on his buttock behind his left hip. “We think it is a fairly aggressive tumour mainly because these types of tumours are often slow-growing, to get to the size that it is now it is often several years,” Cohen told reporters. “But we are treating this very aggressively in order to eradicate the tumour.” There was no sign of the tumour in 2011 when Ford underwent medical tests, he added. Cohen said the soft-tissue cancer is not within an organ, and described it as a “very rare tumour” and “very difficult.” Terrible news! Hopefully he’ll be able to recover from this and FINALLY get his life together.
Why do Black women have a higher obesity demographic than any other ethnicity in America ??? Study Shows Black Women Are More Likely To Be Obese Despite anti-immigration propaganda, the most recent U.S. census revealed that 77 percent of the American population classifies themselves as white. Although black people only make up 13 percent of the nation’s population, black women have a higher obesity demographic than any other group. Via Medical Daily reports: In order to understand the female black community’s perception of weight, health, and beauty, researchers investigated, and what they found is truly eye-opening. In a study led by Elizabeth Lynch from Rush University in Illinois, a team of researchers recruited the help of 69 black women. According to a recent press release, although the women involved all shared similar economic backgrounds, lifestyles, and ages, they had various body sizes ranging from underweight to obese. Researchers purposely used such a range in order to determine whether black women’s perception of weight was based on their own body size or on shared cultural beliefs. Results, published in the Journal of Nutrition, Education, and Behavior, showed that regardless of their weight all women involved in the study agreed over which figures in the Body Image Scale were overweight, obese, and too fat. Although most agreed that figures six through nine were overweight, few went onto agree that these overweight figures were also too fat. The majority did, however, classify figures eight and nine as obese and too fat. Rather than outright ask the women if they viewed their own bodies as healthy or overweight, the researchers asked the women to match their own figures with the images they had previously categorized. This is where the experiment got interesting. In total, 56 percent of overweight women (BMI 25 or greater) and 40 percent of obese women (BMI 30 or greater) did not classify their own bodies as overweight, obese, or too fat. Astonishingly, only 30 percent of the women who were medically categorized as obese actually viewed their figures as too fat. In fact, it seemed that the generally accepted overweight BMI numbers in the black female participants (BMI of 35) was 10 figures over that accepted by doctors. In an interesting coincidence, it was observed that those are the exact figures recent studies have shown to be the point when weight begins to threaten lifespan. This coincidence may be explained by Lynch’s observation that weight loss in the black community is more driven by the desire to be healthy and stay off medicine than lose pounds. While the exact figures of black women with eating disorders are unknown, studies have shown that these disorders are somewhat rare among black females, Psychology Today reported. According to Lynch, black and white women generally have differing views on weight and beauty. “Research suggests that for white women the concept of beauty is heavily influenced by body size, and body size is also linked tightly to self-esteem. For black women, though, beauty is defined less by body size, and it’s defined more in terms of things like personal style,” Lynch explained in a podcast provided by The Journal of Nutrition, Education, and Behavior. In layman’s terms, Lynch explained that, based on her studies, it seems to be easier for black women to be “big and beautiful” than it is for women belonging to other ethnic backgrounds. While the idea of body confidence and the low numbers of black females with eating disorders may be something noteworthy, there is a point where this body acceptance begins to endanger one’s health. “The fact that women felt that overweight body sizes were not too fat suggests that being told they are overweight, even by a physician, may not be sufficient motivation for them to attempt weight loss,” Lynch explained in the press release. Instead, ethnically sensitive diet programs may prove more effective in bringing about real weight loss results in black women. Lynch suggests using visual aids rather than terms and numbers to explain obesity and future weight loss goals. This would erase any misunderstanding between doctors and patients and perhaps help the patient better understand the severity of their health issue. Discuss….
Mayim Bialik is not a fan of Ariana Grande. Specifically the billboards around town promoting the singer’s new album, and in Bialik’s view, sex and lots of it. As she shared on her Kveller blog on Friday, the self-proclaimed “old-fashioned” actress is not a fan of ads such as this, especially because of her children. “There is one for Ariana Grande, and I will go ahead and admit I have no idea who she is or what she does,” the 38-year-old mother of sons ages 6 and 9 wrote. “Based on the billboard, she sells lingerie. Or stiletto heels. Or plastic surgery, because every woman over 22 wishes she has that body, I’m sure.” “Why is she in her underwear on this billboard though? And if she has a talent (is she a singer?), then why does she have to sell herself in lingerie?” “I mean, I know society is patriarchal and women are expected to be sexy and sexually available no matter what we do, but I guess now I need to explain that to my sons?” The billboard (below) is actually for Ariana’s new album, My Everything , which hit shelves late last month using that same image of Grande on its cover: “Am I a crotchety old lady?” Mayim, one of the smartest celebrities in Hollywood, added. “I guess so. Ray Rice’s abuse of hard liquor was a big factor in him knocking out Janay Palmer, according to a new report, and he’s sworn off the stuff as a result. He still drinks, though. Rice told his employer and his friends that this was a catalyst, and he becomes a different person when he hits the bottle, so he decided to “change his life.” Not that much. He still drinks wine and other alcohol … just no spirits . Whatever his reasoning, she stood by him; Palmer married Rice after the attack. But this is a new one: Grant O’Connor was in the middle of a drug deal this week when he butt-dialed the emergency number, prompting dispatchers to hear every word of his illegal conversation and trace the call to O’Connor’s location, a Mexican restaurant in Mt. Pleasant Tennessee. When authorities arrived on the scene, they found O’Connor and a female friend pulling out of the parking lot. They stopped the vehicle and discovered inside a small bag of marijuana, along with assorted drug paraphernalia. O’Connor, who said he had no clue he accidentally dialed 911 with his rear end, was arrested and charged with simple possession and possession of paraphernalia.
