If You Really Want To Get Off Oil, Move To Buffalo

A few years ago, Wired Magazine published an interesting map showing carbon footprint per capita that graphically demonstrated the obvious: Where you get sprawl, lots of cars and air conditioning, you get a much bigger footprint for every citizen due to their higher energy consumption. So if we want to reduce our footprint and get off oil, what is the best thing for Americans to do? Move to Buffalo…. Read the full story on TreeHugger

Ask Pablo: Is Replacing Windows A Good Investment?

Image Source: TottoBG Dear Pablo: I am thinking about replacing my windows to cut back on my home’s energy usage. Will this yield a good return on my investment or is my money better spent elsewhere? Most windows can be compared to a giant hole in your home’s insulation. While a standard wall might have an R-Value (resistance to heat flow; higher is better) of 13-19+, a single-pane window is no better than 1. A gas-filled double-pane window can reach a R-Value of 3, or closer to 2 once t… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Durable Zero-Waste Bags Merge Functionality with Architectural Appeal (Photos)

Credit: Maria Mayer via Carga bags . Finisterre’s Still Making Waves in Waterproofs and Wool

When I’m a grown up I’m going to donate my fleeces to Finisterre. All photos: Finisterre As we’ve noted before, Finisterre is a fiercely independent crew of surfers, out of Cornwall, making highly functional, and award winning, outdoor clothing with a deep ethical and ecological bent. Of recent note is a). their new Anabatic II rain shell, made of recycled and recyclable polyester, b). their exclusive line of double ply Merino wool/organic cotton Tees, and c). their ongoing venture to bring British Bowmont sheep (pictured above), and their superfine wool back from the edge of extinction…. Birth of Adorable Liger Cubs Lands Zoo in Hot Water

Photo via The Telegraph If being adorable was a crime, these liger cubs would clearly be in a great deal of trouble — but that’s not why they were seized recently by authorities in Taiwan. In Taipa’s “World Snake King Education Farm” a lion and a tiger were apparently allowed to produce offspring without first getting governmental approval to permit the breeding — grounds for having the animals relocated and the zoo fined. Officials fr… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Weekday Vegetarian Gets The Nod From TIME and PETA

Sam Kerr for Time Graham Hill’s Weekday Vegetarian concept is controversial among some of our readers, who don’t think people should eat meat at all. But Time Magazine says that only 2.5% of Americans are strict vegetarians or vegans, and Graham’s idea is that any cutback in meat consumption is good for the environment. Not everyone has the discipline to go, dare I say, whole hog; according to Vegetarian Times , a full 10% of Americans follow a “vegetarian-inclined” diet. But the most surprising takea… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Super Cheap Nanotech "Tea Bag" Cleans Water Instantly (Video)

Could a simple “tea bag” of carbon and antimacrobial fibers that costs just pennies be the solution for quickly filtered drinking water on the go? Scientists from Stellenbosch University in South Africa hope they’ve found the solution to drinking water problems in rural African communities. Lacking water sanitation services, the communities can turn to a simple water bottle that uses cheap, removable sachets to clean their drinking water. And comparing the clean water solution to tea bags isn’t far off — they’… Read the full story on TreeHugger

U.S. Cancels Some of Brazil’s Debt in Exchange For Forest Protection

photo via flickr If only Visa treated my debt the way the U.S. is treating debt from developing countries. On Friday, the Obama Administration announced that it will cancel debt from Brazil in exchange for forest protection. The U.S. has done the same for Bangladesh, Belize, Botswana, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Indonesia, Jamaica, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, and the Philippines. Deforestation accounts for about 20 percent of global warming emissions, making zero deforestation a priority in places like Brazil and Indonesia, which rank third and fourth for GHG emissions, respectively. … Read the full story on TreeHugger
