Light Bulbs To Get Nutrition-Style Labels Next Year

Image via FTC Late last year we reported that the US Federal Trade Commission proposed a new label for compact fluorescent lightbulbs that would show vital statistics like mercury content and the light output in terms of lumens rather than watts, which would make the brightness of CFLs, LEDs and other lighting technology more comparable among consumers. Well word has just hit that the new system has been approved and we’ll soon see … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Underwater Robot Accident Causes 100,000s of Gallons of Oil to Gush from BP Spill Source

Image via BP If it all wasn’t so catastrophic, the series of mishaps that have plagued BP’s attempts to contain its gigantic oil spill would almost be comical. Almost. After all, we’ve seen failed ‘top hats’ and ‘junk shots’, the rig literally struck by lightening, and now, witnessed a misguided underwater robot bump into a venting system — forcing BP to again remove the cap that was collecting some of the oil. The leak is again flowing unabated into the Gulf. Here’s how it happened: … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Judge Strikes Down Obama’s Offshore Drilling Ban

Photo via the Telegraph A federal judge in New Orleans blocked the Obama administration’s 6 month moratorium on deep water offshore drilling. According to the New York Times , the judge Martin L. C. Feldman wrote in a 22-page opinion that “The blanket moratorium … seems to assume that because one rig failed and although no one yet fully knows why, all companies and rigs drilling new wells over 500 feet also universally present an imminent danger.” He said the offshore ban would cause “punitive” economic harm and was unwarranted. The White House disagree… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Architects Building Small Refuges in Small Spaces

Images by B. Alter: Studio Mumbai Architects, In-Between Architecture Architects love models and floor plans and drawings of their buildings, but most members of the public do not. They are too hard for the average person to visualize. In a delightful switch, the Victoria & Albert Museum invited seven architects to construct small buildings amidst the displays in the museum. The V&A is a wonderful old Victorian museum with treasures in every nook and cranny. Called 1:1 Architects Build Small Spaces , the architects have squeezed their little buildings in amon… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Will Slaughtermobiles Send Industrial Killing Floors To The Gut Pile Of History?

Image credit: mobileslaughter.com When I was kid in Wisconsin every self-respecting city had it’s own brewery, and a “soda pop” bottler, and an actual butcher. At the largest scale, slaughtery achieved regional prominence – Green Bay Packers got their name from meat packing for example – and farm markets were how you got truly fresh produce. So began the Baby Boom. The succeeding half-century, eliminating local supply chains through industrial consolidation, saw the death of most local food and beverage producers. Meat included. Now, thankfully, there are signs of cre… Read the full story on TreeHugger

This Device Provides Clean Water for Pennies a Day

Photo: Watercone Passive Solar One Step Water Condensation FTW! We wrote about the Watercone back in 2004 , but considering how much TreeHugger’s audience has grown since then, it’s likely that only a handful of you were reading the site back then. I think it’s time to have a second look at this very clever device that has the potential to help provide clean drinking water for millions of people who are lacking access to clean water (or if they do, maybe the access is intermittent and they could use a plan B). This could save many lives for … Read the full story on TreeHugger

GOP Walks Tightrope of Contradictions Over BP Gulf Spill (Video)

Photo via TBO The biggest splash in politics last week, at least ’round the blogoshpere and cable news circuit, was undoubtedly Representative Joe Barton’s (R-Texas) surprise apology to BP . While many conservatives supported his sentiment, many others immediately recognized the political damage it could cause, and rushed to distance themselves from the apology. The whole debacle underscores the contradiction-laden tightrope that GOP leaders must walk: The party must … Read the full story on TreeHugger
