Mother Monster took some time after her ARTPOP Ball tour stop in St. Paul, Minnesota, to touch a few young lives at the Gillette Children’s Hospital on Wednesday (May 21). A Boston-area man picked up a restaurant tab for a stranger he overheard tearfully discussing a medical diagnosis, and the waiter documented it on Reddit. “While waiting tables tonight, a mother and daughter started crying mid-meal,” wrote the server on the site, describing the heartwarming experience. “I had no idea what happened until a single guy at the table next to them handed me this note [seen below] with his bill. Faith in humanity, restored.” The waiter told the Huffington Post he couldn’t confirm the relationship between the two women, but he was fairly certain they were mother and daughter. After they ordered, the woman whom the waiter believes was the daughter took a phone call. Both women then started crying. Recounts the server: “The single guy sitting next to them had been friendly to me all evening, making jokes and such.” “When he was finished I gave him his check, and inside the billfold was his credit card and the note I took a picture of. I combined the 2 checks, and he paid for both.” “I waited until after he left to tell them their check had been taken care of. The mother was overwhelmed with gratitude, as was I. It was a great evening.” And now a great story to make you feel a little better about life. In a world where so much seems to go wrong, it’s good to know there are people like this.
Paulina Gretzky is engaged to Dustin Johnson, breaking the hearts of pretty much every single straight male in the U.S. with the exception of Wayne Gretzky. Sorry, guys. The 24-year-old daughter of The Great One announced the heartwarming/breaking news of her impending marriage to the PGA Tour pro on Instagram. Saturday, with a pic of a giant diamond rock on her ring finger, she shared an image of herself locking lips with Johnson, 29, writing “Never been happier.” As such, her Instagram may no longer retain its must-follow status. Sigh. The couple has been together for only 7-8 months … but if you’ve seen Paulina Gretzky photos , you can understand Dustin’s goal in putting a ring on it. Let’s talk Turkey! Ahem. Literally: The country’s CNN outpost brings viewers worldwide this heartwarming story of a teenager in Adana who reportedly sneaked into a railyard where the cast and crew of Skyfall had taken up production of a fight sequence. The young man was caught, queried and removed from the set — but not before smuggling out footage of James Bond slugging it out atop a train. Yaşasın! Honestly, from Ain’t it Cool News’s ” discovery ” of the wholly Turkish-language video to the more professional B-roll footage backing up İbrahim Ali Özden’s well-placed amateur camerawork to a major news network’s earnest interest in some 17-year-old who crashed a movie shoot, I’m not ready to believe this leak wasn’t entirely contrived by Sony’s super-savvy marketing team as the latest crumb in the Skyfall viral campaign. Still! James Bond fighting on a train, etc. etc. Perhaps needless to say, spoilers follow — as does a 30-second ad just ahead of the news story. I can only hope you are fortunate enough to get the Turkish Head and Shoulders spot that I was subjected to, which is roughly 100 times more entertaining than Skyfall will ever be. The Occupy Wall Street protest movement may be loosely organized, but protesters in New York and in other cities around the country are firmly united in opposition to one faceless entity: Corporations. So how would the denizens of Zuccotti Park feel about a $250 million Hollywood studio film about a billionaire playboy hero coming to town to potentially use their protests as a backdrop?
Ten years after working as a director and consulting producer on Freaks and Geeks , the heartwarming television series about a few misunderstood high school troublemakers (and their more wholesome peers), Jake Kasdan found his biggest box office success this summer with Bad Teacher , another project profiling a misunderstood hallway troublemaker. Starring Cameron Diaz as an English teacher more interested in smoking pot and procuring breast implants than molding the the minds of her middle school students, Bad Teacher earned over $200 million worldwide, establishing Kasdan — son of The Big Chill and Accidental Tourist filmmaker Lawrence Kasdan — as a heavyweight comedic director and rounding out a summer known for it’s R-rated, female-led comedies.
The true spirit that lives on from September 11, 2001 is love. I was at work the day the buildings fell victim to hatred. I walked home with people covered in dust and dirt. I helped a man shake the debris from his clothes. I lost friends in those sterling silver towers of light. There are many who feel that it is an unfortunate event that should be forgotten. My beautiful city was rendered smokey, muddy and sad. The emotional toll of watching doctors, nurses, and common every day citizen rush to help. . I walked home more than 5 miles to turn back around and go see what I could do. I sat on a floor waiting to donate blood for hours. There were many African Americans who reacted like me. It didn’t matter what color, religion, sexual orientation, or creed you were. We were all one. We were bound by the love of humanity to help. September 11, 2001 is filled with people who dropped everything they were doing to help. These are the amazing true stories of the construction workers who left their work sites and marched down to ground zero, unbidden and en masse, to join the search and rescue effort; of the restaurateurs who emptied their refrigerators, brought tons of food down to the site and fed everyone working there; of the sanitation workers, teachers, phone technicians and thousands of others who stepped forward to help the city revive itself; and of Americans from across the country who joined them. There was the guy in a wheelchair who rolled himself miles from his home in Harlem to bring down a bag of sandwiches. There was the urban search and rescue team that came up from San Juan, Puerto Rico, with their dogs to spend hour upon hour hunting through the piles of debris. And there were those who had lost loved ones in earlier disasters coming to help the bereaved of 9/11 cope with tragedy. So many thousands showed up from everywhere to help that the authorities had to turn the city’s main convention venue, the Javits Center, into a special site dedicated to organizing the volunteers according to skills and capabilities. Recalling that enormous outpouring of support from “people of all persuasions, backgrounds and beliefs,” former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani says, “I saw it, I lived it, and am humbled by the heartwarming, remarkable response that demonstrated the resilience of America.” Now we honor the dead, recall the pain and hope for the future. We can continue their legacy by serving. I challenge you to serve on this day. The true spirit of September 11, 2001 is love. God Bless America and may the lost souls rest in peace.
