Good Evening Hitchcock, Your Trailer Is Served

Only weeks ahead of its world premiere as the opening film at AFI Fest comes a glimpse of Anthony Hopkins and Helen Mirren starrer, Hitchcock . Like the festival’s closing night counterpart, Lincoln , the title will no doubt be an awards-season heavy-weight. The legendary filmmaker and his wife Alma Reville (Mirren) take the focus in the Sacha Gervasi-directed feature, which is set against the backdrop of filming Hitchcock’s Psycho in 1959. The trailer opens with Hopkins talking about violence and horror and he’s just a man “behind the scenes with a camera.” Scarlett Johansson, Jessica Biel, Vera Miles, James D’Arcy, Danny Huston and Toni Collette also star in the film, which spans from the time of Wisconsin murder Ed Gein, the inspiration for Psycho ‘s Norman Bates character, to the release of the lauded film in 1960. Hitchcock and Reville’s marriage comes under strain due to the filmmaker’s determination to complete the film. Fox Searchlight, which will release Hitchcock beginning November 23rd, will likely have a multiple Oscar-nominated pic on its hands if the trailer is any indication. What do you think?

Sure, Scarlett Johansson Will Make a Great Janet Leigh

“Director Sacha Gervasi has tapped Scarlett Johansson and James D’Arcy to play Psycho stars Janet Leigh and Anthony Perkins in Fox Searchlight’s Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho . Anthony Hopkins will play the iconic director, while Helen Mirren will play his wife, Alma. Sources tell Variety that Making of Psycho has drawn comparisons to My Week With Marilyn , and that the role of Janet Leigh could lead to the same awards consideration for Johansson that the Marilyn Monroe role did for Michelle Williams.” [ Variety ]

Jimmy Kimmel’s Star-Studded Movie: The Movie Spoof Is Depressingly Accurate

Late night host Jimmy Kimmel’s tradition of filming a post- Oscar movie-related spoof continued Sunday night with a “trailer” for Movie: The Movie , the ultimate star-studded epic to end all epics. In addition to featuring a host of stars, from Taylor Lautner to Helen Mirren to Tyler Perry (er, “Daniel Day-Lewis as Tyler Perry as George Washington”), the Kimmel-produced gag covered just about every genre and trope known to the movies. I give it a few years before some suit turns this into a reality. Among the stars in Kimmel’s ensemble: Ryan Phillippe, Jessica Biel, Ed Norton, Josh Brolin, Antonio Banderas, Tom Hanks, Charlize Theron, Helen Mirren, Tyler Perry, Meryl Streep, Jason Bateman, Matt Damon, and Colin Farrell. Okay, who am I kidding: I’d totally watch a K-9 buddy cop action sports movie starring Farrell as a SWAT officer partnered with a bomb-kicking Air Bud. Go ahead and make that happen, Hollywood. Watch the 2012 Oscars Trailer, Starring Billy Crystal and the Stars of… Transformers

ABC released a cutesy trailer for the 2012 Academy Awards telecast that speaks loads to the youthful new direction the show’s makers were going in when they brought Brett Ratner aboard, before his untimely exit ; in a slick parody of globe-trotting Hollywood fare, two heroes are tasked with tracking down wizened Billy Crystal for hosting duties on the Big Night. Those heroes? None other than Transformers castmates Josh Duhamel and Megan Fox, because of course. Nothing says current like the girl who was the hottest thing on earth three years ago! Watch the trailer and see if it entices you with its “Hey kids, check us out!” hip comedy stylings. The trailer even comes courtesy of Funny Or Die, it’s so plugged in! And hey, isn’t that Vinnie Jones as a mysterious bartender with inside intel? And Bill Fichtner as Oscarcast producer Brian Grazer? (At least that much makes sense.) And, well, Robin Williams as a Himalayan ferryman? (That cameo actually just makes me sad that he’s not hosting or co-hosting with Crystal.) See, the Oscars are for everybody! This milquetoast-but-four-quadrant trailer proves it! Verdict: The 84th Academy Awards will be televised live on Feb. 26 at 4p.m. PT/7 p.m. ET, and from the looks of it we’ll be in for a loooong night.

Shia LaBeoummer: Wettest County Dumped to August

After their not-so-dextrous handling of The Road throttled director John Hillcoat’s film into cultural oblivion, let’s be honest: There’s something bittersweet about watching the Weinsteins suffocate Hillcoat’s anticipated follow-up Wettest County for old times’ sake. Starring Shia LaBeouf, Tom Hardy and Jessica Chastain in an adaptation of Matt Bondurant’s acclaimed Depression-era novel The Wettest County in the World , the movie has been shifted from its relatively favorable April 20 release date to the death row of Labor Day weekend — Aug. 31, where, to be fair, where Focus Features has dined out the last two years with similarly adult-targeted fare like The American and The Debt . Of course, those movies had proven stars in George Clooney and Helen Mirren, respectively; practically since its inception, Wettest County has been viewed as a dramatic mainstream proving ground for leading men LaBeouf and Hardy. Now it’s more like some kind of three-legged race to the holiday box-office finish line, with the duo facing off against the supernatural thriller 7500 . Good luck, fellas! Anyway! All the more resources for the surging #ConsiderUggie campaign . [ LAT ]

Rumor: Bill Murray Reportedly Shredded Ghostbusters 3 Script In Brilliant Act of Defiance

Presenting the best-worst Bill Murray rumor of the week: The National Enquirer (I know, I know) reports that the actor has finally gotten around to that Ghostbusters threequel script he had been avoiding for months — by shredding it and sending the carnage to Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis along with a note that read, “No one wants to pay money to see fat, old men chasing ghosts!” Fictional tabloid Bill Murray kind of has a point.
