Diane Lane will play Super-Mom in Zack Snyder’s Reboot

Diane Lane is confirmed to star opposite Henry Cavill in Zack Snyder’s Superman reboot as Martha Kent, the only mother Clark Kent has ever known. Granted, Lane plays Cavill’s adopted mother and has a solid 19-year lead on him (at least, in real life), but I’m still having flashbacks to a few months ago when Michelle Pfeiffer was cast as Chris Pine’s mother . Diane Kruger Denies Possible ‘Superman’ Casting

‘They’re all false rumors,’ actress says of reports she’s in the running to appear in the upcoming superhero reboot. By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Kara Warner Diane Kruger Photo: Universal Pictures Now that British star Henry Cavill has been officially tapped to play Superman , rumors have been swirling about how the rest of the flick’s cast will shape up. Recently, industry insiders mused that three starlets are up for the female lead — which is not Clark Kent’s well-known main squeeze Lois Lane — in the Zack Snyder-helmed project: “Sex and the City 2” actress Alice Eve, Rosamund Pike from “An Education” and Diane Kruger from the “National Treasure” series. However, when MTV News sat down with Kruger on Saturday (February 5), the German-born actress — who is currently promoting the film “Unknown” — flatly denied that she’s in the running for the role. “They’re all false rumors,” the “Inglourious Basterds” star said. “I don’t know who launched them but it’s not true.” Kruger emphatically batted away reports that she has been in talks or auditioning, saying, “No. None.” Even though Kruger is officially out of the leading-lady race, speculation about who will star opposite Cavill’s Superman — among other questions — still remains. In addition to Pike and Eve, A-listers like Kristen Stewart, Jessica Biel, Natalie Portman and Rachel McAdams have been among the names to pass in and out of the “Superman” rumor mill. With casting for female lead still up in the air, the identity of the character has also not been revealed. However, a Lane-free flick might be a hint that the storyline will propel the Man of Steel outside of the fictional urban locale of Metropolis. Production on “Superman” is slated to kick off this summer. Fans can expect the superhero adventure to arrive in theaters in December 2012. The Case For Cobie Smulders in The Avengers (Among Other Blockbusters)

The further away I get from the news that Henry Cavill was cast as Superman , the more I appreciate the Warner Bros. decision. Not because it proves there is some silly conspiracy to hire foreign-born actors to play American icons; rather, because Warner Bros. saved everyone from having to follow along with the endless wheel-spinning short lists that usually accompany the casting of most franchise blockbusters nowadays. (See: the Warner Bros. hunt for Lois Lane as reference .) Still, if we’re going to be subjected to another short list, at least it can include names like Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Morena Baccarin and Cobie Smulders. All three actresses are reportedly up for the role of Nick Fury’s sidekick The Avengers , which got me to thinking: Why isn’t Cobie Smulders more famous?

‘Superman’ Star Henry Cavill Had Long Road To Landing The Role

Actor has been linked to Superman reboots since 2002. By Eric Ditzian Henry Cavill Photo: Larry Busacca/Getty Images It took Henry Cavill far longer than expected to complete his journey from Krypton to Earth. Years after the British actor first circled the role of Superman, he finally landed the part of the Man of Steel in Zack Snyder’s reboot of the storied comic franchise. It was, indeed, a circuitous path for Cavill, involving brushes with other heroes and the planet’s most swoon-worthy vampire. He’s been this close to becoming a breakout Hollywood star a staggering number of times, but until now he was unable to seal the deal. Now his life is about to change in a big way. As we applaud Cavill for winning the part, let’s take a look back at the ups and downs he endured before signing on to play the world’s most iconic man in tights. 2002 : Though he was mostly known as a stage actor, Cavill’s name cropped up in “Superman” conversations following director Brett Ratner’s stated desire to cast an unknown in the title role of his in-the-works reboot. Ratner also had a strong interest in future “White Collar” star Matthew Bomer , but the studio pushed him in the direction of established talent like Jude Law and Josh Hartnett. It didn’t matter, though: Ratner left the project early the next year. 2003 : McG came aboard to replace Ratner and began to search, like Ratner, for an unknown actor to play Superman. Cavill actually ended up landing the role. “I was attached to the McG ‘Superman’ movie,” he explained to MTV News in 2009. But McG’s version of the film never came to pass and Cavill once again missed out on the opportunity to play the Man of Steel. That same year, following rumors that Cavill was being considered for the role of Batman in Christopher Nolan’s reboot, Christian Bale won the role of the Caped Crusader. 2004 : After McG’s departure from “Superman,” Bryan Singer hopped into the director’s chair and targeted an unknown actor. But the actor wasn’t Cavill. Instead, Brandon Routh won the lead role. “[The McG and Singer versions] were two different movies,” Cavill explained in ’09. “So it wasn’t so much of a sting because it was like, ‘Oh, I got [the role],’ and then the movie just didn’t happen.” 2005 : Cavill wouldn’t have been faulted for avoiding any contact with iconic film characters, but he kept pushing. In ’05, he screen-tested for the role of James Bond in “Casino Royale.” But the part went instead to Daniel Craig, and Cavill, perhaps, was left with his confidence shaken, not stirred. 2007 : By this point, Cavill had mostly appeared in low-profile films like the direct-to-video “Hellraiser: Hellworld” and in supporting roles in higher-profile fare like “Tristan & Isolde.” But the guy got a break when he was cast in the Showtime series “The Tudors,” opposite Jonathan Rhys Meyers. The series enjoyed a successful run, lasting four seasons and earning a Golden Globe nomination in 2007 for best drama. Cavill had also reportedly been “Twilight” author Stephenie Meyer’s top pick to play Edward Cullen, but at the end of ’07, the role went to Robert Pattinson. A few years later, we asked Cavill how close he had actually come to playing the vampire. “I’ve heard this, but I haven’t heard from Stephenie,” Cavill told us . “I haven’t spoken to her personally, and I haven’t spoken to the producers.” 2009 : Rumor has it that Cavill was competing for the role of Hal Jordan in the long-gestating big-screen adaptation of “Green Lantern.” And — surprise, surprise — after losing out on Batman and Superman, Cavill failed to land the role. Instead, Ryan Reynolds signed on to play Jordan . 2011 : At long, long last, the guy who missed out on playing some of pop culture’s best known characters officially signs on to play Superman . “In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time, and I am honored to be a part of his return to the big screen,” Snyder said in a statement. “I also join Warner Bros., Legendary and the producers in saying how excited we are about the casting of Henry. He is the perfect choice to don the cape and S shield.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . Meet The New Superman: Henry Cavill

British actor known for ‘The Tudors’ was once attached to McG-helmed reboot. By Mawuse Ziegbe Henry Cavill Photo: Michael Loccisano/FilmMagic He’ll be flying into movie theaters in 2012, but who exactly is the newest Superman, Henry Cavill? The latest screen star to don the famed crimson cape has gained fame as a castmember of Showtime’s period romp “The Tudors,” and will hit the big screen in the upcoming Greek mythology epic “War of the Gods.” But before he was tapped to play the iconic superhero, he was super close to portraying everyone from Twilight’s Edward Cullen to James Bond to, ironically, Superman in another filmmaker’s vision of the superhero. He was up for Superman before British screen star Cavill has been making a name for himself stateside as Sir Charles Brandon on the saucy historical drama “The Tudors,” but he’s come close to portraying Superman before. MTV News caught up with Cavill back in 2009, and the then 25-year-old star told us he was set to zip through the sky as the Man of Steel in director McG’s (“Terminator Salvation”) take on the American icon. However, a shuffling of filmmakers resulted in Cavill getting dropped from the project, which eventually became the 2006 flick “Superman Returns.” “I was attached to the McG ‘Superman’ movie,” Cavill told MTV News “Then Bryan Singer came on and took the helm and he made his movie. “[The McG and Singer versions] were two different movies,” Cavill explained. “So it wasn’t so much of a sting because it was like, ‘Oh, I got [the role],’ and then the movie just didn’t happen.” He also reportedly missed out “Batman” … and “The Green Lantern” Cavill was rumored to be on the shortlist of leading men up to vanquish Gotham-area baddies in Christopher Nolan’s “Batman” franchise, a role which eventually went to fellow Brit Christian Bale. Ryan Reynolds also reportedly beat out Cavill for the “Green Lantern” series. He lost Edward Cullen to Robert Pattinson Thanks to RPattz, Cavill missed out on one of the biggest movie franchises in recent years, “Twilight,” even though he had some strong support in his corner. “Twilight” author Stephenie Meyer once said that Cavill was her dream choice but Mother Nature thwarted the casting. “The only actor I’ve ever seen who I think could come close to pulling off Edward Cullen is Henry Cavill. Henry was Albert, the young son in ‘The Count of Monte Cristo.’ Can you see it? I know I can!” Meyer blogged in 2007. However, after some delays in development, Meyer conceded that Cavill had aged out of “Twilight” territory. “The most disappointing thing for me is losing my perfect Edward.” “By the time the movie came around, I didn’t look right for the character,” Cavill explained to MTV News in 2009, adding, “No one even called me or my agent.” … And he was almost James Bond The actor also auditioned for the role of 007 in “Casino Royale,” but instead Daniel Craig knocked back shaken martinis and coolly took out henchmen as the world’s first blond Bond. He may not have played Bond but he does drive the character’s famed car In a 2009 interview with JustJared.com , Cavill opened up about his biggest splurge, which he said was an Aston Martin — the same sleek, high-end ride that’s been associated with Bond. “It was one of those things that just ended up happening, like, ‘Right, okay, just treat yourself,” he said. The star also dished that he enjoys video games like World of Warcraft and shows like “Dexter.” Related Photos Henry Cavill Imagined As The New Superman

Stephen Dorff Describes ‘Immortals’ As ‘ ‘300’ Meets ‘Gladiator’ ‘

‘I could end up having horns coming out of my head, and wings,’ Dorff joked about the final product. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Stephen Dorff Photo: MTV News For those anxious to see more of Stephen Dorff after his critically acclaimed role in Sofia Coppola’s “Somewhere,” you won’t have to wait too long to see him back on the big screen. Dorff’s next film is the buzzworthy “Immortals,” directed by visionary filmmaker Tarsem Singh (“The Fall,” “The Cell”), which also stars Mickey Rourke, Kellan Lutz, Henry Cavill and Freida Pinto. When MTV News caught up with Dorff recently, we asked him for his take on the film. “So much of that movie is going to be done in post [production],” he said, adding that he has no idea what it will look like when it’s finished. “I could end up having horns coming out of my head, and wings,” Dorff joked. “I don’t know what’s going to happen.” The veteran actor described “Immortals” as ” ‘300’-meets-‘Gladiator.’ ” “[There’s] a lot of testosterone,” he said. “A beautiful girl, Freida Pinto, brings the innocence and femininity to the movie and she’s really great. I found her great to work with.” With regard to his onscreen action with Rourke, who plays the villainous King Hyperion, Dorff said that again, due to the amount of visual effects that will need to be added to the film, he’s unsure of what the final product will look like. “Mickey kinda is in this mask for most of the movie, so I don’t know how it’s going to be in the final cut, but he looked great. I had most of my [scenes] with Freida and this other character [Theseus, played by Henry Cavill]. John Hurt is in it as well.” Dorff went on to say that he is sure the film will be great, but that the larger scope of the production was a big change from the intimate environment he worked in on “Somewhere.” “Whenever you do something that big — especially coming from ‘Somewhere’ — I always get a little nervous,” Dorff admitted. “But I have to keep moving until Sophia does another movie, or another filmmaker I’d love to work with does another movie. … I have to hopefully pick the right things. I’m trying to be careful with what I do next,” he said. Check out everything we’ve got on “Somewhere.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
