Katy Perry is never one to hold anything back. The singer performed her new song “Wide Awake” at the Billboard Music Awards last night, a song written for her upcoming 3D documentary movie and which appears to specifically address her recent divorce from comedian Russell Brand. How did I read the stars so wrong. I was dreaming for so long. I wish I knew then what I know now. I wouldn’t dive in, I wouldn’t bow down,” she sings. But the song isn’t about the singer wallowing in heartbreak for long, at least. “Not losing any sleep,” she says. “I picked up every piece and landed on my feet.” “Need nothing to complete myself. I am born again, outta the lion’s den. I don’t have to pretend. The story’s over now, the end.” If the song is as autobiographical as it sounds, she’s moved on. Good for her.

Up until last night, Reed Grimm appeared to be one of the most confident American Idol contestants in recent memory. The guy initially auditioned with the Family Matters theme song , after all. But the season 11 contestant – who grew up on stage, singing alongside his family – showed some panic in Hollywood, as he was told shortly before it was time to perform that he could not sing a capella as he had planned. He had to include the band. Cue a call to Reed’s mother and concern over whether or not he even belonged on the competition… and then cue what we believe to be an Idol first. Has anyone else ever played the drums for an audition before? Grimm did so here, rather well, to boot, earning a comparison from Randy to Casey Abrams. Reed Grimm – “Georgia on My Mind” (American Idol Audition) Reed received approval for the next round, and he’ll join a few other standouts from last night there, including Joshua Ledet, Colton Dixon and Jen Hirsch .

With her performance in Hollywood last night, let’s hope Shannon Magrane finally gets recognized for her potential to actually win American Idol . So far, the 16-year old has been the subject of inappropriate remarks from Steven Tyler , as well as lame puns from Fox producers (we were told last night that the contestant “hopes to a home run.” Get it? Because he father pitched in the World Series!). But let’s not lose track of an important fact, folks: Shannon can sing! She proves as much below, belting out a version of “What a Wonderful World.” Shannon Magrane – “What a Wonderful World” (American Idol Audition) We have high hopes for Magrane, who has been featured each week on season 11. The same can be said for Reed Grimm . Is the show trying to tell us something?

You might have heard that it’s Valentine’s Day, which means romantic ruminations and reflections and perhaps an irresponsible outlay of cash in the humiliating pursuit of way more than a kiss goodnight. You know who you are. For others, it’s a chance to look on at the utter futility of love in all its heart-shattering horror. We know who we are, and it’s time to represent. To wit: Let’s talk about the most pulverizing break-ups in cinema. I’ll just get right to my pick: Cloris Leachman letting Timothy Bottoms have it at the end of The Last Picture Show . No Valentine’s Day is complete without a good, wracking cry, and I now can say I’ve had mine: Mrs. Popper’s classic “Never you mind” does technically open her relationship status with Sonny up to some ambiguity, but “You shouldn’t have come here; I’m around that corner now” pretty much cements the deal for me every single time . I’d also argue it cemented Leachman’s Oscar win for her performance; alas, that’s a conversation for another time.
