On DVD: Catching Up With Tilda Swinton, the Queen of Weird

New to DVD : Sally Potter’s 1993 metamovie Orlando , from which sprang (for most of us, anyway) the unearthly miracle of Tilda Swinton. Adapting an unadaptable Virginia Woolf novel — a “biography” of a young nobleman who lives for hundreds of years and switches his sex somewhere in the middle — Potter exploits Swinton’s uniquely beautiful oddness. At first in drag, Swinton is less a convincing boy than an undeniably charming androgyne, all moonish eyes and alabaster skin, but after the hero changes to heroine (“Same person, no difference at all — just a different sex,” she says, turning naked toward a full-length mirror), we still haven’t seen anything quite like her before. Orlando is a wry, feminist anthem-movie, but it’s far from the only DVD -rentable freak on Swinton’s pre-Oscar resume…

Justin Bieber Fans Say They’ll Cast VMA Votes ‘Every Single Day’

‘Nobody stands a chance against him,’ one die-hard Belieber says of Best New Artist nominee. By Rya Backer Justin Bieber Photo: Mark Von Holden/ Getty Images Justin Bieber has had a landmark year, earning among other accolades a friendship with Kim Kardashian , a #1 album, a sold-out tour and a multitude of hits. And now, in addition to performing at the 2010 Video Music Awards on September 12, he’s also been nominated for Best New Artist for “Baby.” MTV News hit Madison Square Garden before Bieber’s sell-out gig on Tuesday and asked Bieber’s fans about his chances of winning. The Beliebers, who are famous — and at times infamous — for their rabid devotion, not surprisingly, predicted very little competition for their hero from his fellow nominees, including chart-toppers Ke$sha and Nicki Minaj. Because the Best New Artist is decided by the public, Bieber’s fans said they’ll see to it that he takes home his Moonman. “Most of the fans that he has are really big fans, so if they vote for him, they’ll vote for him every single day,” Bailey Solomons explained. Solomons, along with two friends, did not have tickets for the MSG show, but dressed up in their best Bieber garb hoping to be invited in. Another fan, Alexa Summerlin, affirmed Bailey’s sentiment, saying, “Justin has a big fanbase and the people are gonna vote for him.” “Nobody stands a chance against him, if they did, I would be so shocked,” said Taylor Carro, a fan who plans on voting before the September 12 deadline. Other fans had a simpler argument for why Bieber stands to pick up the award. “He’s amazing and everyone loves him!” Diana Rossi gushed. “All the teenagers and kids love him,” Danicka Przchowski added. Be sure to catch the Video Music Awards September 12 to see if Bieber’s fans got out the vote! The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on September 12 at 9 p.m. ET. Go to

Jersey Shore Shop Owners Welcome Snooki And Company Back Home

‘You can’t pay for the exposure we’ve got,’ says Danny Merk, who owns the store where the cast worked in season one. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Ignacio Guzman Snooki Photo: MTV In addition to keeping local law enforcement busy ( really busy ), the stars of MTV’s “Jersey Shore” have also made an impact of a different sort on the town of Seaside Heights, New Jersey: an economic one. Seems business is booming on the boardwalk, especially now that the show is back in town to tape its third season . Seaside Heights Business Improvement District executive director Maria Maruca probably summed it up best when she told MTV News earlier this year that “we can’t even calculate the economic benefit” the show brings to the community. “There’s the curiosity factor,” she said. “Celebrities draw crowds. That’s going to give us an edge that we didn’t have before. The exposure that the show brought to Seaside Heights — when every late-night host is talking about Snooki, when Leonardo DiCaprio is talking about the show — we could never have afforded that type of media. This is more than we could ever have asked for.” So, determined to find out just how Snooki and company have helped out local businesses, we trekked out to the boardwalk and asked owners of some of Seaside’s best-known shops — some of which have already been featured prominently on the show. ” ‘Jersey Shore’ has helped Seaside Heights [in] both winter and summer. We get people coming in here every day looking for the cast,” said Michael Carbone, owner of the Beachcomber Bar and Grill (the same place where Snooki was hit last season). “You go down by the house, there’s a hundred people standing outside, every day. Business is up, the town is up. People come here for the ‘Jersey Shore.’ ” The Beachcomber benefits doubly, as it has a catering contract with MTV and, according to an NBC News report, serves thousands of meals for the 130 crew members who work on the “Shore.” “It’s helped everybody. Businesses in town, the motel owners, even the crew that makes the show have been patrons of my bar every night,” Carbone said. “We are hoping the show runs for years and years to come. … It’s a big craze, and it’s doing very well for everybody.” Those sentiments are echoed by Danny Merk, who owns the Shore Store, where the cast of the show (sorta) worked during season one. “It’s been busy in here all the time now. It’s great that I own a gift shop … people wanna buy little souvenirs. T-shirts. Little things, and this is the place to be at,” he said. “But it’s helped all the business on the boardwalk, because you can’t just shop at one store. … You can’t pay for the exposure we’ve got. “It came out of nowhere, [and] all of a sudden the kids came down here. They worked like average kids during the day, went out to the clubs at night,” he continued. “Now, it’s just nonstop. Everyone wants to see what they are doing. What did they do, what places they went to. They want to be like them. A lot of people just worship them.” Even though his store wasn’t featured on the show, Mike Rariden’s Adrenaline Body Piercing and Tattoo shop has definitely reaped the benefits of the toned (and tatted) “Jersey Shore” kids — even if he can’t seem to comprehend just why. ” ‘Jersey Shore’ has definitely brought a lot more people out than it has been in previous years. Everybody is trying to get in on the action, get on the show, meet the cast and crew,” he said. “They’ve definitely increased business a lot. … [There’s] a big population of younger kids that all look at Snooki as their hero. I don’t know why, but, hey.” Don’t miss “Jersey Shore” every Thursday at 10 p.m. ET/PT on MTV. Related Videos The Return Of ‘Jersey Shore’ Related Photos Jersey Shore (Season 2) | Snooki

Don’t Ask Gerard Depardieu to Join the Juliette Binoche Fan Club

I know, I know: When you think of Gerard Depardieu, the very first thing that comes to mind is the kindly French chef he played in the Queen Latifah vehicle Last Holiday . (After that, maybe My Father the Hero ?) Sadly, he is not at all like that character, as his cruel, out-of-nowhere remarks about French compatriot Juliette Binoche prove.

IT’S OFFICIAL: J_JAMMER HAS OFFICIALLY LEFT CURRENT

J_Jammer was a true legend on Current. THE GUY WAS A HERO! He was the most controversial user who some, myself included, loved/admired, and who others loved to hate. He appeared in many forms after, and some liked to play a game spotting him on this site. But no more. . . Like a select few of us here, he wanted to make Current better as the medium for intelligible, revolutionary, progressive content and enlightenment. He was further inspired to do so because Current has declined to an MTV-like state which started like 2 years ago (to which they fired the best people and hired actual mtv staff members). People who knew him knew that he was intelligent but a lot of people also felt that his comments were cruel and took his comments too personally. I have to say, first of all, that this is Current not Feelings. But when he said those things it was to prove a point, not for the sake of preying on the community as some have made him out to look like. J_Jammer was kicked out – which Nettle explains in the video – when he made a questionable comment, like the rest of us, but then he was ganged up on by hypocrites to get Current or their algorithm to delete his account – to which these hypocrites are guilty of the same thing: inappropriate, hate-filled comments irrelevant to the post, but they ganged up on him, which was just plain WRONG. As we know, this didn't stop him. . . . But the decline of Current itself, has now stopped him from trying. From now on anyone who you think is J, will not be J – it's official. To J_Jammer, I say: Current is dead, it's the new MTV. Cheers! Let us hope for finding new mediums for intelligence, progress, and revolution!!! Also, stay cool and take it easy, man. ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………. {An excerpt from J_Jammer's Letter that he sent to a select few} “…. I won’t be coming back. As in once this name is dead I am done. I’m already done replying. So now all I have is replying to any private messages I might get. That is unless they are laced with arsenic, then deal is off. The site isn’t better than it was a year ago. It’s progressively getting worse and no one cares, so I’ve decided to stop caring too. It’s a waste of energy caring. There’s not a lot of places too post like Current that has the same fun people, but I’ll eventually find somewhere else. So be careful who you think is me, because after this—you’ll be 100% wrong. JJ or J_Jammer or however you wish to remember me…yeah you won't be forgetting.” added by: Aether_Vitae

Ariz. Sheriff to Obama: Give Me Half Hour, I’ll Show You How to Secure Border

Sheriff Paul Babeu of Pinal County, Ariz., is issuing an invitation to President Barack Obama: If the president will come and spend a half hour with Babeu in Arizona, the sheriff says, he will convince the president he can succeed in securing the border and thus make himself into a hero who transcends partisan politics.   Babeu’s southern Arizona county, while not contiguous with the border, has been designated by the Justice Department as part of a High Intensity Drug Trafficking region that is a major route for drug and alien smugglers bringing narcotics and illegal aliens into the United States from Mexico. Babeu has joined with Sheriff Larry Dever of neighboring Cochise County, Ariz.-which does sit on the border-as well as with Arizona’s two senators, John McCain and Jon Kyl, in endorsing a ten-point plan for securing the border.     Noting that President Obama has visited Afghanistan to assess the security situation there, CNSNews.com asked Babeu in a videotaped interview whether he would like the president visit with him in Arizona so he can have the opportunity to persuade the president that his plan to secure the border will work. “If the president gave me a half hour, I am confident that I could convince him and to show him the way that he can personally secure the border, and he would be the hero of everybody that truly transcends bipartisan politics and secures that border,” said Babeu. “I believe that if a leader truly wanted to do that we have the means and the resources necessary to secure our border and to protect America once and for all, and then we can get to the point in the future, only after the border is secure, that there is some type of discussion about what do we do with the approximate 13 million people who are here illegally.”     The  ten-point border security plan  backed by Sheriffs Babeu and Dever and Senators McCain and Kyl includes provisions to complete 700 miles of double- and triple-layered border fending, significantly increase the number of drone surveillance aircraft patrolling the border, and deploy 3,000 National Guardsmen to the Arizona section of the Mexico border alone until the governor of Arizona in consultation with local law enforcement officials certifies that the border is secure. What Is ‘Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World’ All About?

You’ve seen the colorful and wacky ads, but they might have left you wondering: Who is Scott Pilgrim? By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Michael Cera in “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” Photo: Universal Pictures Those who have encountered Universal’s creative and very colorful marketing campaign for the upcoming “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” movie might be either intrigued or perplexed by the zany high-action trailers or the larger-than-life billboards (featuring either star Michael Cera shredding the guitar or the more dubious “Exes by the numbers” shot). Either way, apart from the film’s stellar cast and excellent tagline — “An epic of epic epicness” — curious moviegoers might be wondering: Who the heck is Scott Pilgrim? And what is this movie about? Well we here at MTV News are more than equipped to help answer those questions and more. Kicking off a week of Pilgrim-pegged coverage, we bring you a handy primer of the unlikely hero, courtesy of director Edgar Wright (“Sean of the Dead,” “Hot Fuzz”).To begin with, he says it’s all about love. “It’s essentially a love story — or a love triangle even — about a young man, Scott Pilgrim,” Wright told MTV News when he stopped by our live-stream show at Comic-Con recently. “[It’s] basically the ups and downs of his love life, filtered through kung fu and video games and all sorts of insane action.” Those ups and downs revolve around Pilgrim fighting for the love of Ramona (played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead) — we’re talking literal fighting here. Before Pilgrim and Ramona can be together, he must defeat her seven evil exes. Wright said it’s like a cartoon/ video game/ sugar-cereal cocktail. “Brian Lee O’Malley, who wrote the books, once described the character Scott Pilgrim as the hero of a movie inside his own head,” Wright said. “This essentially is the movie, so it’s kind of like a big daydream for people who’ve been brought up on Saturday morning cartoons, video games and too much sugary product.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.” For breaking comic book movie news, columns and more — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com . Salute To Homeless Man That Rescued American Flag

If you haven’t seen any reports about this matter, let me introduce you to Gustus Bozarth, a homeless man that last week rescued a downed American flag from a severe rainstorm in El Paso, Texas. His story has touched people across the nation, as his great deed was caught on tape by outdoor surveillance cameras at a federal contractor where the incident occurred. The following is the television report that first brought attention to Bozarth’s selfless act of patriotism (video follows with quotes from KFOX14’s article published July 4 along with heartwarming updates): There is typically an American flag that flies high in front of METI Inc., a federal contractor in East El Paso. But instead, the flag is lying flat inside and the flag pole is on the ground outside after a storm last Sunday. “The wind and the rain knocked over the flag pole, causing the flag pole to lie on the parking lot overlooking Boeing Drive,” said Rebecca Orozco with METI Inc. But it is the condition in which employees found Old Glory that shocked everyone, until they checked their surveillance video. “After watching the surveillance videos we noticed that it was a good Samaritan who we suspect was a homeless man that came to the rescue of the flag around 1:40 in the morning,” Orozco told KFOX. In the surveillance video you can see the homeless man in driving rain and wind carefully folding up the American flag military style and then placing the flag pole off to the side. KFOX found the man who didn’t turn his back on the flag. His name is Gustus Bozarth. “It’s a small respect, folding the flag like that,” said Bozarth.  In this day and age when patriotism is being shunned by so many, it certainly brings a tear to the eye, doesn’t it? But the story gets better, for on Friday, a trust fund was set up for Bozarth. KFOX14 reports : Soon after the airing of KFOX’s story which originally aired on the 4th of July, offers from $5 to $1,000 poured in for the man many considered a patriot. Like KFOX, METI Inc., was inundated with emails and calls from people who want to help Bozarth. Through the Teresa Montoya PR firm, a trust fund was set up. If you would like to help, the name of the account is: “In trust for Gustus Bozarth.” it is being managed by Wells Fargo, 6175 Gateway Blvd. West, El Paso, Texas 79925. The account number is 7913692971.  Also on Friday, KFOX14’s weekend anchor that first reported this incident (Daniel Novick)  shared some e-mail messages with America’s unlikely hero: Novick: “We got e-mails from all over the country. This one is from Brent Thurman in Louisville, Kentucky, he said, ‘I almost cried when I watched that video and it made me so proud. “This one is from a staff sergeant, retired from the United States Air Force, his name is James Knight, he said ‘I was touched by the video of him and the flag.’ He’s a 100 percent disabled veteran.’ “Let me read another one for you. This one is from Army Forces Command in Fort McPherson, Georgia. They said, ‘What an amazing, true American. Thank you so much for doing this story on this hero. It brought tears to my eyes, but they were proud tears of how happy I felt inside, of what this gentleman had done. Such a simple act of kindness and a heart that is saying I am proud to be an American. Again, thank you.'” Novick: “What do you think about that?” Bozarth: “It’s interesting.” Novick: “How does it make you feel?” Bozarth: “Feels good, making military feel good, making military feel good, that’s the best thing making anybody feel good.”  In case you think patriotism is dead in this country, I give you Gustus Bozarth.

Denis Leary Promotes Rescue Me With Homophobic Slur, Jokes About His Children Burning Alive

If you are gearing up to promote your television series on a talk show, you have several choices: 1) You can prepare a TV-ready anecdote about something hilarious that happened on-set (See: Jonah Hill’s story about being reprimanded by his hero while filming Curb Your Enthusiasm ); 2) You can prepare a TV-ready anecdote about something interesting in your personal life (See: Kristen Stewart’s description of her real-life pet wolves ); or 3) If you are Denis Leary, you can put together a startlingly homophobic anecdote about something that was said in poor taste to Derek Jeter on the set of Rescue Me .
