Lil Wayne Talks Eminem, Drake And Prison Life

‘Every time I pick up the phone to dial a number, I feel like I’m a bother, because I’m in jail,’ he tells Hot 97 of keeping in touch with friends and family. By Hillary Crosley Lil Wayne (file) Photo: MTV News Lil Wayne called in to New York’s Hot 97 radio station Tuesday evening (August 3) from Rikers Island to talk about his time behind bars, hopeful collaborations and his upcoming EP, I’m Not a Human Being, due in September. Wayne started his sentence on gun charges in March and is scheduled for release in November . “I’m calling you from Rikers Island right now, unfortunately,” Lil Wayne said over a crackling phone line to Hot 97’s Funkmaster Flex . When asked about the support he’s received from fans while in jail, he said, “It’s been more than amazing. I promise that I can’t explain the love and support I’ve been getting from my fans. I never knew it was like that, and I’ve been doing this for, what, 16 years? It’s breathtaking.” Wayne went on to remind listeners and fans how to reach him while he’s locked up. “All you have to do is go on my website WeezyThanxYou.com , and I think all of my information is on there where you can write to me, and I get my mail every day,” he said. “I read as much as I can and I respond, and if you want to hear me respond, all you have to do is check back on that same website, and I have a great lady named Karen Civil that puts up my responses, she puts up updates, everything is on there. Some people might faint when they see their name on there, and they be like, ‘Oh my God!’ It’s a great thing.” He also shared what he’s been listening to — and not listening to — during his jail time. “I’ll be very honest, Flex: I don’t listen to no music. All I listen to all day, if I am listening to anything, is sports. And that ain’t because of nothing, just the simple fact that I’ve never listened to anyone else’s music but my own, and since I’m not able to do that up in here, I don’t listen to anything. I don’t listen to nothing but my thoughts.” Wayne has at least checked out Eminem’s latest album, Relapse, which he’s featured on. “Em is him, and he’s back in a major way,” he said. ” … As far as Eminem the dude, he’s a great dude. He’s been keeping up with me since I’ve been in here, and I appreciate his support.” The rapper later said he’s “a sports fanatic” who “played football and baseball, and I played football more than baseball, but I never was any good, so it’s nothing to speak about. I just have a great knowledge of the game.” Wayne had a few thoughts about dream collaborations upon his release. “I’ve been saying to myself that I really want to do a song with either Andre 3000 or I really like my man Tech N9ne from the West Coast,” he said. “Other than that, I’ve been trying to do a song with this little dude Weezy; he’s stupid.” Wayne said he stays scarce when it comes to keeping up with Young Money stars Drake and Nicki Minaj. “I call Drake at least once a week, but I actually call three or four times a week, but he only picks up for me once a week,” the MC said with a laugh. As for calls to Minaj, he jokingly said, “That being my future wife, we talk every night. Nah, the same goes for her. I don’t like to bother them in the midst of what they’re doing, because I know they have a whole lot on their plate every single day. That’s my thing with everybody. They be like, ‘Why haven’t you called me?’ But it’s because I don’t want to bother. Put in this position, I just feel like every time I pick up the phone to dial a number, I feel like I’m a bother, because I’m in jail. I don’t have nothing else to do but talk to you, and that might not be what you want to do at the time. I don’t know if that’s just a conscious thing, but … I always feel like I’m bothering. I call Mack Maine every single day, and I know I get on his nerves, but he answers every single time.” Wayne went on to describe a typical day in Rikers. “I wake up around 12 noon, I jump on the phone, call Mack, call family, call my mother, call my kids — you know I got a lot of kids to call,” he said with a dry laugh. “After that, once I start reading that fan mail, literally, I could read it all day, every day because it’s so much. That fan mail knocks off like four, five hours of the day. And then I do dinner — whatever that may be in here — I jump on the phone again, and after that, I’m through.” As for what he’s learned from his stint in prison, the MC said he’ll “definitely move more carefully. I’ll definitely take heed to my situation and my status. I mean, when I ask myself … everybody says that you’re here for a reason, and I promise you, Flex, I try to find out that reason every day. I search for it. But I think when I get out, that’ll be the only time I’ll really know the answer. Every day I look for that reason.” As for Wayne’s upcoming EP, it’s on the way. “Yes, it’s gonna drop before Carter IV, only on the Internet,” Wayne said. “This is stuff that I recorded right before I came here.” As the jail phone beeped its warning that Wayne’s interview was coming to a close, the MC thanked all his fans for their support. “I don’t want the phone to hang up on us, so I want to say thank you to all my fans, and I love you, Flex, for giving me this opportunity,” he said. “I appreciate what you’re doing, Flex. Keep doing it.” What do you think about Lil Wayne’s comments from prison? Let us know in the comments. Related Artists Lil Wayne

Nicki Minaj Dedicates BET Award To Lil Wayne, Shouts Out Female Rappers

MC, who’s been feuding with Lil’ Kim, also calls for ‘positive energy among women’ in speech. By Mawuse Ziegbe Nicki Minaj at the 2010 BET Awards Photo: Frederick M. Brown/ Getty Images Despite any tension that Nicki Minaj may have with other hip-hop artists , she was all about the love when she won the Best Female Hip-Hop Artist trophy at the 2010 BET Awards. Sporting red-orange hair, a cream-colored corseted gown and chunky jewels, the star took the stage after embracing her fellow Young Money superstar Drake. The rap diva dedicated her award to her mentor, Lil Wayne , saying, “This is for Dwayne Carter.” Minaj gave him credit for “predicting” her success and thanked him for his “tough love.” (Drake also thanked Weezy when he won for Best Male Hip-Hop Artist.) Flanked by a crew that included Gudda Gudda from Young Money, the hip-hop Barbie also showed love to many of the women in the building, including actress Jada Pinkett Smith, who she said she idolized. She went on to rattle off a list of other stars in her speech, including Bad Boy mogul Diddy, and shouted out her Young Money collective saying, “This is not a rap group, this is my family.” She wrapped up her speech by shouting out BET Awards host Queen Latifah and thanking her for all the “positive energy” the Hollywood Jill-of-all-trades gave her before the show. Then, in what could be interpreted as a subtle nod to all of the drama between Minaj and fellow Best Female Hip-Hop Artist nominee Lil’ Kim , Minaj called for more love among the ladies. “I think it’s so important right now for positive energy among women,” she said. “I’m fighting for women.” And just so there’s no ambiguity in the future, she closed her speech by paying tribute to her female predecessors in hip-hop: “Thank you to all the female rappers that paved the way for me.” Related Videos The 2010 BET Awards Related Photos 2010 BET Awards Show Highlights 2010 BET Awards Red Carpet Related Artists Nicki Minaj Lil Wayne

Eminem Joins B.o.B At BET Awards For ‘Airplanes’/ ‘Not Afraid’ Medley

Keyshia Cole takes over for Paramore’s Hayley Williams on the chorus. By Hillary Crosley Eminem performs at the 2010 BET Awards Photo: Michael Caulfield/ WireImage Not only did B.o.B get a chance to perform his hit “Nothin’ on You” during the BET Awards pre-show , but the rookie MC also brought out Keyshia Cole for his hit “Airplanes” during the main show. After an introduction by T.I. and Queen Latifah, during which the pair jokingly referenced T.I.’s arrest for gun charges before the 2007 BET Awards , B.o.B began his set by playing the piano. Cole launched into the song’s chorus, surprising the audience, since she’s been out of the spotlight following the birth of her first child with basketball player Daniel Gibson. Sporting blond hair, a textured red skirt with a black top and matching stilettos, Cole gave “Airplanes,” which originally featured Paramore frontwoman Hayley Williams, a soulful spin through her trademark vocal runs. Once Cole and B.o.B reached the chorus, Eminem joined the duo onstage for his verse on the track’s remix. Then, the music ran seamlessly into Em’s newest single, “Not Afraid.” The Detroit MC recently appeared on the “Late Show With David Letterman” to promote his and Jay-Z’s upcoming concerts at New York’s Yankee Stadium and Detroit’s Comerica Park. On Sunday night (June 27), wearing a black jacket with a white tee and jeans, the MC ran through “Not Afraid” backed by a five-piece band and a gospel choir. Rhyming with a reserved and controlled energy, Eminem ended his performance of the emotional track to a standing ovation. What did you think of B.o.B’s and Eminem’s performances? Jay-Z, Eminem Visit ‘Late Show With David Letterman’

Appearance included the duo’s performance atop the Ed Sullivan Theater and a ‘Top 10 List’ read by Eminem. By Hillary Crosley Eminem and Jay-Z perform on the “Late Show with David Letterman” Photo: Matthew Simpson/ CBS After selling out their upcoming concert at New York’s Yankee Stadium before tickets even officially went on sale, Eminem and Jay-Z took the stage on the “Late Show With David Letterman” Friday night. The two veteran MCs are promoting their co-headlining hometown stadium performances in Detroit’s Comerica Park and Yankee Stadium this September. Eminem, sporting a black jacket, jeans and a white shirt, began by presenting the comedic “Late Show Top Ten” list segment featuring his “Pieces of Advice for the Kids.” “If I sign something for you and I see it on eBay, when you go home, I’m gonna be under your bed,” Eminem joked, struggling to keep a straight face. He continued with, “Always purchase music through authorized retailers that pay royalties to the artists,” and “Remember the magic words: ‘Please,’ ‘Thank You’ and ‘Step Off Bitch.’ ” Jay-Z followed Em by sitting down and chatting with Letterman about his and the Detroit MC’s working relationship. “We did a song on my album called Blueprint — the first one, I’ve got a lot of them — called ‘Renegade’ and it was good,” Jay said. “When you make good songs, you become friends.” Letterman then asked why the pair are just deciding to tour together now. “Em is a notorious non-tourer,” said Jay. Later, Hov almost argued the positives of NBA baller LeBron James leaving the Cleveland Cavaliers and joining the New Jersey Nets, which the rapper co-owns, before stopping himself. “There’s rules and guidelines that I want to be very certain to follow,” Jay told Letterman. “Everyone would love to have a LeBron James on their team. He’s a free agent come July 1. We’re gonna try after July.” Letterman disagreed with Jay’s interest in James, saying, “If LeBron James wants to be a guy, he will stay where he is and not cut the heart out of that city by leaving Cleveland.” At press time, the basketball player’s decision is still anyone’s guess. Then Jay and Eminem’s pre-taped performance rolled. The gents played three songs with a live band, opening with Eminem’s latest single “Not Afraid” before moving into Jay’s “On to the Next One” from 2009’s The Blueprint 3. As a grand finale, the pair performed “Renegade,” their first collaboration from Hov’s 2001 album The Blueprint. The mini-concert was originally filmed earlier this week atop the Ed Sullivan Theater . Ludacris Had A ‘Good Conversation’ With Former Rival Bill O’ Reilly

‘We came together and did an event for charity,’ MC says of his run-in with the Fox News pundit. By Hillary Crosley Ludacris Photo: Jerritt Clark/ Getty Images Ludacris has made peace with his much-publicized enemy, Fox News anchor Bill O’Reilly, after running into the controversial republican pundit at a recent dinner. “The first thing I said to him was, ‘I want to meet the guy who has had so much to say about me, but knows absolutely nothing about me’,” Ludacris told RadarOnline.com . “I identified that I wanted to speak to him when I saw his name on the guest list. I looked at what table he was on and I walked my ass straight to that table,” Luda continued. “He wasn’t expecting to see me at all. The look on his face when he saw me approaching … priceless.” The MC said the pair even teamed up for a recent charity event, but the shindig was kept secret. In 2002, Pepsi announced Ludacris as one of its spokespeople, and O’Reilly demanded a boycott against the company for hiring someone who “disrespects women, encourages drug use and encouraged violence.” In response, Pepsi fired Ludacris , though O’Reilly continued to condemn the rapper for years afterward, calling him “vile” and a “thug.” The soft-drink company also hired Jack and Kelly Osbourne, children of Ozzy Osbourne and famous for their foul mouths, as spokespeople and kept the pair on board. “I feel like they don’t respect the black dollar,” Ludacris said in 2003 of the beverage company’s decision to drop him. “When they put the Osbournes on, that’s basically them saying I’m worse than the Osbournes, so I don’t know who makes the decisions up there. No pun intended, but that’s ludicrous, man.” But now the past is water under the bridge. “The conversation we had was confidential, however, let’s just say it was a good conversation and good came out of it,” Ludacris offered. “From there, we came to a common ground. To be honest with you, we came together and did an event for charity — as crazy as it sounds. Perhaps everything happens for a reason.” The MC said the meeting was a culmination of years of cosmic pleading. “I prayed since the very first moment that Bill said something about me on television that I would be able to meet him in person,” Ludacris said. “It took about seven years for that to happen, but it finally happened. And the joy that came over me, well, it was outstanding.” Representatives for the MC were not available for comment at press time. Related Artists Ludacris

Lil Wayne Told His Family To Be ‘Strong’ During His Incarceration, Ex-Wife Says

‘At this point it is what it is, and we just gotta make the best of it,’ Antonia ‘Toya’ Johnson told Vibe magazine. By Hillary Crosley Lil Wayne arrives in court on March 8, 2010 in New York City Photo: Louis Lanzano/ AP Images After several postponements due to dental surgery, a courthouse fire and court-date rescheduling, Lil Wayne finally turned himself in on Monday to begin his one-year jail sentence at Rikers Island. However, he wasn’t the only one feeling the strain. The rapper’s ex-wife Antonia “Toya” Johnson and daughter Reginae shuttled back and forth to the New York City courthouse from Atlanta in anticipation of his incarceration. “It was up and down, you know. One minute we thought he was going and she’d be sad, and then he don’t go,” Johnson told Vibe magazine recently. “We [were] in New York like two times and we ended up turning right back around because he didn’t go.” Despite all of the back-and-forth, Reginae missed seeing her father on Monday when he began his sentence stemming from a July 2007 gun-possession charge. “The last day he finally went in, we didn’t go, so my daughter was like, ‘I wish I would’ve went.’ It was just too much. I just didn’t want to let her see that again ’cause both times she took it real hard,” said Johnson. “So I was like, I’m not gon’ let her go this last time. I’m just gon’ make sure he talk to her ’cause I didn’t know if he was really gonna go. They kept pushing back.” Wayne might be the biggest rapper on the planet, but he’s just “Dad” to Reginae, so Johnson said the time apart will be hard on the 11 year-old. “He just told me to be strong and don’t really trip. Don’t let her see me down,” said Johnson. “At first my daughter would see me a little sad and you know kids they react off of your feelings sometimes, so he was just like, ‘Be strong, make sure you take care of her. Make sure she straight and keep her phone on all the time so I can call her. The time is gonna fly by.’ “The whole point of him being in jail is just not good for her — to say her dad’s in jail,” Johnson continued. “But at this point it is what it is, and we just gotta make the best of it. I’ma take her to visit him and talk to him and she’ll get through this eight months. It’ll fly by. I tell her all the time, ‘Just call daddy and tell him you love him,’ and he’ll be home soon.” Lil Wayne and Johnson married in 2004 and divorced in 2006. In 2009, Johnson and her friend, T.I.’s fianc

Jennifer Lopez Spoofs ‘We Are The World,’ Olympics On ‘SNL’

J. Lo’s television blitz continues with ‘How I Met Your Mother’ cameo, rumored ‘Glee’ appearance. By Hillary Crosley Jennifer Lopez spoofs “We are the World” on SNL on Febuary 27 Photo: NBC Jennifer Lopez might be between record labels , but her television appearances have been fast and frequent. After filming an episode of CBS’ “How I Met Your Mother” last month, playing a sexy self-help guru who seduces Neil Patrick Harris’ character, Lopez hit “Saturday Night Live” for the first time in almost a decade. “The first time I was on this show was 10 years ago. … Back then I was single and traveling around with a big entourage,” Lopez said, opening the show in a form-fitting black leather dress. “But people grow up; now I’m married with two beautiful children.” The singer/actress went on to have an awkward conversation with comedian and “SNL” cast member Kenan Thompson, who was posing as a discarded member of her 1990s entourage, flanked by two drag queens wearing her infamous green barely-there dress and a denim bodysuit. All ended well as Thompson left the stage with the drag queens in tow and J. Lo began the show. Another skit portrayed “We Are the World 3,” a spoof of the recent remake. Lopez played Rihanna , wearing a black and white Balmain-inspired leather jacket with gold hoops, hipster sunglasses and a blond cropped wig. “There comes a time, eh!, when we heed a certain call, eh!” Lopez sang, poking fun at the “Rude Boy” singer. In the next skit, Lopez was part of a Winter Olympics curling team. She played a confused Telemundo reporter covering the Winter Olympics in another. “We don’t understand these, es loca!” said Lopez, wearing an orange blazer. The strangest clip had to be a mock celebrity news interview in which Lopez was questioned by Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader, leading the Bronx native to scream “paciencia y fe” (“patience and faith”) like a madwoman before stomping out of view. Lopez also performed two guiter-led songs including the Danja-produced, Wynter Gordon-written “Starting Over” from her forthcoming album, Love? Her LP is slated to hit stores this summer. Lopez still has not specified what label she has signed to, but Deadline Hollywood , the blog that originally broke the story of the Sony split, reported that she is in talks with Island Def Jam. Neither she nor her former label, Sony Records, has discussed what precipitated the split, but Deadline speculated that it might have been a response to the poor critical and commercial reception to the album’s first official single, “Louboutins,” which failed to light up the charts. Lopez’s episode of “How I Met Your Mother” airs March 8, and she is rumored to be in talks for an appearance on the Golden Globe-winning show “Glee.” Related Artists Jennifer Lopez

XXL’s 2010 Freshman Class: Two More Names Revealed!

Full list will be unveiled next month. By Hillary Crosley, with additional reporting by Shaheem Reid Nipsey Hustle Photo: XXL Last week, we presented a glimpse at XXL ‘s Freshmen 2010 class from the magazine’s photo shoot, and while XXL still won’t let us tell all, we’re leaking two more names. The special edition of the publication has boosted MCs like Kid Cudi, Wale and Asher Roth over its two-year history, and thus far the magazine’s staff has been pretty spot-on when predicting the next big stars. In 2008, rappers like Saigon, Lil Boosie and Plies made the cut, while last year, B.o.B and Charles Hamilton graced the cover. Other members of the ’09 class were Kid Cudi, Ace Hood, Curren$y, Blu, Mickey Factz and Cory Gunz. XXL ‘s Vanessa Satten said the editorial staff started deciding the 2010 class two months ago. Along with their own research, they also took recommendations from the magazine’s editors at large and freelance writers. “Last year, in general, the class was more Internet-driven,” she told MTV News. “It was kind of a different class. The office would make fun — it was more of a nerdy class. The rappers involved might get offended by that, but it was definitely to the direction of the Internet audience, the Internet rappers. This [new] class is a mix of that and a little bit more street. And more of hodgepodge.” Last week, Fresno, California MC Fashawn, Georgia trapstar Pill, North Carolina’s J.Cole and Los Angeles’ Nipsey Hussle were outted as part of the Freshmen 10 while they rhymed a few bars in the shadows, to conceal their identity, during the magazine’s photo shoot. Here are the next two newcomers: Gary, Indiana’s Freddie Gibbs and Atlanta’s OJ Da Juiceman . “I’m from the land of cans of spam, hand to hand, dope deals made, dollar for dollar gram to gram, you could follow me and see just how much a man could stand,” rhymes Freshman #7 Gibbs in his clip through his Midwestern accent. The announcement of Freshman #8 OJ Da Juiceman hit the Web via a viral video on Wednesday (February 24). [In the clip, the protege and sidekick to the incarcerated Gucci Mane sat in darkness, revealing only his jeans, sneakers and bejewelled wrists and fingers as he spit. “Six rings on like a basketball player, freshmen of the year like a basketball player/ what it do good, man I’m here to stay, aw man gurl man we in your face. Ay!” he drawled, ending his performance with his trademark yelp. Controversially, neither Drake, arguably the most well-known new MC in rap right now, nor Nicki Minaj are part of 2010’s Freshmen class. “Technically [Nicki Minaj and I] were freshmen when [ XXL ] didn’t put us on,” Drake said recently, according to RapRadar.com. “Now it’s just returning the favor.” The XXL Freshmen 10 issue hits stands March 13. Satten said there will be a DJ Whoo Kid mixtape to promote the issue in the coming weeks, as well as a party and Freshmen 10 tour featuring a few of the artists. T-Pain, Snoop Dogg, Rick Ross ‘Re-Create’ Atlanta Block Party In ‘Freaknik’

Cartoon premieres March 7 at 11:30 p.m. on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim. By Hillary Crosley “Freaknik: The Musical” Photo: Adult Swim T-Pain has a cartoon on the way called “Freaknik: The Musical,” but it’s probably not for kids. The show, airing March 7 on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim, will be an hour-long extravaganza detailing a group’s quest to “successfully resurrect the spirit of Freaknik … the biggest spring-break party known to man.” On Wednesday morning (February 24), T-Pain tweeted a trailer including castmembers like Rick Ross and Snoop Dogg discussing the show and remembering their experiences at the original Freaknik. “Back in the ’90s, Freaknik was Atlanta’s version of the ultimate block party. It was Mardi Gras meets spring break, at your crazy cousin’s bachelor party, and anything could happen,” T-Pain said in a statement last month. “A decade later, I’m bringing it back for people like me, who didn’t get to experience it the first time around. We’ve re-created Freaknik’s vibe and energy with amazing animation, new music and an all-star cast of characters.” The Adult Swim cartoon has long been in the works, and T-Pain has recruited everyone from comedians Andy Samberg, Bill Hader and Charlie Murphy to musicians Cee-Lo, Big Boi and George Clinton to lend their voices to the show. Still, with all the good-time nostalgia flying around, some participants like Rick Ross had to be coaxed into joining the “Freaknik” cast. “If it was for anybody else, I wouldn’t even be part of a cartoon,” Ross said. “But because of what Pain told me, he told me we’re doing it uncut, we’re doing it. It turned out to be fun, man, so it’s me, Snoop Dogg, Lil Wayne, the list goes on.” Others were more than happy to relive the glory. “I was at the first Freaknik back when it first started in, like, the early ’90s, when it was poppin’. … I was a young rapper, selling CDs and tapes and posters,” Snoop Dogg recalled with a smile. Pain isn’t the first hip-hop star to team up with Cartoon Network. In 2006, Outkast’s Andre 3000 produced “Class of 3000,” an animated series set in Atlanta’s Westley School of Performing Arts. And Danger Mouse and MF Doom released an album and EP — 2005’s The Mouse and the Mask and ’06’s Occult Hymn — that featured beats taken from Adult Swim programming (and more than a few cameos by Adult Swim stars). “Freaknik: The Musical” premieres March 7 at 11:30 p.m. on Cartoon Network.
