Betty White Speaks on Rue McClanahan Death

With the death of Rue McClanahan earlier today, Betty White is now the last of the Golden Girls . Losing her co-star this morning hit the octogenarian hard. “Rue was a close and dear friend. I treasure our relationship,” White said in a statement today. “It hurts more than I ever thought it would, if that’s even possible.” Rue McClanahan passed away at age 76 after suffering a stroke, following the deaths of costars Bea Arthur last year at age 86 and Estelle Getty in 2008 at age 84. Betty White, who has experienced an unexpected but wonderful career comeback of sorts lately at 88, was the eldest of the long-running NBC comedy’s quartet. Betty White, center, with the late Rue McClanahan and Bea Arthur. Golden Girls producer and writer Marc Cherry, known to younger generations for creating Desperate Housewives , also expressed grief over McClanahan passing: “My favorite character to write for was Blanche Devereaux. In the hands of lesser actresses Blanche’s vanity and sexual appetite would have been off-putting.” “But in Rue’s brilliant hands, that character became one of the most beloved in the history of TV. Rue’s kindness, generosity and talent will be sorely missed.”

Gabe Saporta Recalls Patriotic Make-Out Session On ‘When I Was 17’

Cobra Starship frontman recounts a fateful class trip to Washington, D.C., on the latest episode. By James Montgomery Gabe Saporta Photo: MTV News This might not exactly come as a surprise, but when he was 17, Cobra Starship frontman Gabe Saporta was a bit of a hell-raiser. Seems that the manic mastermind behind hits like “Good Girls Gone Bad” was never far away from trouble as a teen, much to the chagrin of pretty much every authority figure around him. “When I was 17, I was pretty much just as obnoxious as I am now, but louder,” Saporta laughed. “I went against the grain a little bit, and you always get in trouble when you do that. … Teachers hated me.” As a straight-edge kid at a Hebrew school (“We had, like, 11 periods a day,” he sighed), Saporta didn’t have to work very hard to stand out from the pack. It just seemed to come naturally to him, particularly on one fateful class trip to Washington, D.C., which he recounted on the latest episode of MTV’s “When I Was 17,” also featuring Evan Lysacek and Kimberly Caldwell. “We went on a class trip to Washington, D.C., to learn about the history of our government … and everyone had a hotel room, two people per room, two boys, two girls in each room,” Saporta smiled. “But really, class trips are just make-out sessions, so I went and snuck into one of these girls’ rooms … only this girl that I was making out with, her roommate who she was paired up with came back and freaked out and, like, had a panic attack.” The spooked roommate grabbed a chaperone, and before he knew it, Saporta was busted. He got sent home from the trip, and even though he felt the wrath of his folks when he arrived home, he still thinks the stunt was worth it — after all, it only added to his legend. “I got in trouble the next day, and I got sent home from the Washington trip,” he said. “I got kicked off the trip, I got to make out with a girl, and everyone’s like, ‘Wow, you were making out with a girl and you got kicked off the trip! That rules!’ ” The latest episode of “When I Was 17” — featuring Saporta, Evan Lysacek and Kimberly Caldwell — airs Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV. Ohio and Florida

With 13 days to go, the campaign thunders on. Mom has been campaigning on her own so met back up with Dad for some huge rallies in Ohio followed by some HQ visits in Florida. I am so grateful for the chance to be on the campaign with him. I think our energy really gets him pumped up for these rallies. Plus, he likes to joke around with us behind the scenes. Another first for me at the rallies in Ohio was introducing Dad to the huge crowd! I was as nervous as I think I’ve ever been, but Dad had the right advice and I think I did fine; at least the crowd seemed to think so. Everyone is excited about the election, but there’s a lot of work yet to be done. When I see my father reach out to supporters, look them in the eye and see the expression on their faces, I know he will be the kind of President we need at this time in our history. If you hear about an upcoming campaign event in your area, be sure to come out in support of him. You won’t be disappointed. Song of the Day: “No Hiding Place” by Elvis Costello Everyone, go out and check out his new album, it’s incredible!!!

RZA Addresses Comments About The South That Offended Jay Electronica

‘Hip-hop to me is more a unifying force than a separating force,’ Wu-Tang Clan mastermind tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Sway Calloway RZA Photo: MTV News The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive Jay Electronica got people heated — namely DJ Kay Slay — when he said some Southern MCs, such as Andre 3000 and Bun B, could roast cats from up North during an interview with TheMostInfluential.com last month. Electronica, ever the outspoken warrior, was very candid with the outlet. A few minutes into the topic, the conversation shifted to Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA. We all know Jay has the utmost respect for the clan from Shaolin; he shouts them out on his mixtape banger “The Ghost of Christopher Wallace.” But he admitted that he took exception to some comments from the Abbot he read years ago. “He said some real ridiculously stupid, ignorant things about some South people,” Jay said. Jay, who is from New Orleans, said he was offended when RZA was quoted questioning the intelligence of some Southern MCs while talking about the quality of lyricism. “I don’t like that,” Jay explained. “That would be like me coming to New York or another place and saying you’re of a lesser intelligence because you’re not knowledgeable about my circumstance or environment. “I took offense with RZA in that,” he added. “Peace unto RZA. That’s my brother, and RZA had a great effect on me. I wouldn’t be who I am if it wasn’t for RZA and the music he made with Wu-Tang Clan. But also RZA, you said some crazy, wild sh–. At that time, we might have had a physical altercation how I really felt about it. … Going around thinking people are slow. I just wanted to say that. Again, peace to RZA, he’s a beautiful black man. He’s done a lot for our culture, a lot for humanity in general with his music and his contribution.” Well, the RZA recently sat down and talked with MTV News’ Sway and was asked about Jay Electronica’s comments. The Wu founder wasn’t aware of Jay’s comments or his music, for that matter. RZA did have a very clear recollection of some things he said in the past about the South. “I know I said a few things about the South throughout my career in different periods,” RZA told Sway. “I don’t know the exact comment, but I remember I did an article in Rap Pages years ago, ’cause me and Master P had a talk about this years ago. I was speaking on the education level in the South, how brothers drop out … in the sixth grade — some of them because they have to go to work, some of them because of the poverty, some because they’re not interested in the education system … just a lot of crazy things that people from up North had evolved from. When I was doing this article, I was taking about my own family at first. My family comes from the South. They frying fat back in the kitchen, Grandpops didn’t have more than a sixth-grade reading level. My grandma was a welfare mom. “The truth is the truth, first of all. The South has evolved later than us,” RZA added. “Based upon where we are around. You can get a book in Harlem off the streets. Books like ‘Stolen Legacy’ the ‘Isis Paper,’ you can find this stuff in the streets of Harlem. Just walking around in Manhattan. In the South, they won’t find that in the bookstores nor the streets; they have to research it. With Internet knowledge, there’s a better chance for education for all. I felt and I seen. I got cousins out there that still live in the South. They have not picked up on the wavelength of where their mind should be. But hip-hop has helped it all evolve. Hip-hop, to me, is a blessing and a mercy for the black community first. Then I’ll say for the urban community, then I’ll say for American culture.” Also while talking to Sway, RZA noted that hip-hop doesn’t belong to just one region. The entire world has embraced it and has partial ownership. “If anybody got a question of what I say, they can ask me. I fear no man. I fear no MC’s talent,” he said. “But I definitely know when you young, you feel a certain way. At one point, we as Wu-Tang was like, ‘The whole industry is wack besides Wu-Tang.’ That was our energy, our spirit. That’s how we felt until we learned, ‘Wait a minute, hold on. That’s why they talking about that.’ Hip-hop, to me, is more a unifying force than a separating force.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines or follow the Mixtape Daily team on Twitter: @shaheemreid and @mongosladenyc .

‘New Moon’ Men Battle For Best Male Performance At MTV Movie Awards

Channing Tatum, Daniel Radcliffe and last year’s winner, Zac Efron, are also in the race. By Jocelyn Vena Robert Pattinson in “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” Vampires, werewolves and wizards — oh my! Toss in a time-traveling Zac Efron and a letter-writing soldier, and you have the race for Best Male Performance at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards , airing this Sunday, June 6, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on MTV. Efron might have a leg up on the other guys, since he took home this very Golden Popcorn last year for “High School Musical 3: Senior Year,” but Robert Pattinson , Taylor Lautner , Daniel Radcliffe and Channing Tatum will no doubt put up a good fight. Last year’s winner returned to high school for “17 Again,” this time as a grown man trapped in a 17-year-old’s body. Can Efron prove that he’s the big man on campus again? If supernatural beings are more your thing, then “New Moon” offers up two performances that will certainly get your blood pumping — which, if you’re around Pattinson’s Edward Cullen , could be a dangerous thing. Bella Swan’s man faces off against her best friend, Jacob Black, played by a beefed-up Lautner . This is the ultimate case of Team Edward vs. Team Jacob. Of course, Lautner, Pattinson and fellow “Twilight Saga” star Kristen Stewart will be at the Movie Awards on Sunday to present an exclusive new clip from “Eclipse” ! Radcliffe is making a compelling case for the Golden Popcorn, reprising his teen-wizard role in “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.” There are no halves here: He can either win it or lose it. It may take a little magic for Tatum to take home the prize. He made girls cry and made Amanda Seyfried swoon in “Dear John,” but he’s up against some stiff competition in this category. Dear John — we mean Tatum — we’re rooting for you! Which guy are you pulling for to win the Golden Popcorn? Tell us in the comments! Les Grossman Gives ‘Twilight’ Star Robert Pattinson Some Unlikely Grooming Tips

Hear what the ‘Tropic Thunder’ movie exec advised RPattz to do to his ‘filthy hair’ before the 2010 MTV Movie Awards. By Kara Warner Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart onstage during the 2009 MTV Movie Awards Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ FilmMagic Doing his part to add more VIP cred to the upcoming , movie exec Les Grossman — last seen shaking his moneymaker in “Tropic Thunder” — recently took out of his busy schedule to offer “Twilight” heartthrob Robert Pattinson a few grooming tips before the big show, which airs live June 6. In a new promo, the Hollywood producer and his young actor, Grossman told Pattinson (bluntly and spewing profanities) that the awards show is lucky to have him: “MTV is sportin’ mad wood that you’re doing the show.” Pattinson, looking a little startled and uncomfortable, admitted to Grossman that he’s been thinking about cleaning himself up a bit for this year’s awards show. “Maybe [I’ll] get a suit, have a shave. Maybe [I’ll] wash my hair,” RPattz responds. “I love it,” Grossman says sweetly, before raising his voice and launching into a tirade. “In fact, I love it so much I’m going to fly Vidal f—-ing Sassoon here to personally give you a Brazilian blow-out! And when he’s done, I’ll give you the number of a good plumber because you just flushed your f—-ing career down the toilet! “Your filthy hair made you a star,” Grossman reminds Pattinson. “Your filthy hair made me hundreds of millions of dollars and, he adds, pausing for dramatic effect, “sent my fat a– kid to space camp four times. He manages to calm down long enough to ask Pattinson a question: “What kind of shampoo are you going to use?” “Dirt?” Pattinson offers nervously. Grossman, satisfied with his star’s response, reaches out for a fist bump. “That’s my dirty dog. Playa,” he smiles. Watch out for more of Len Grossman’s words of wisdom this week. ‘American Idol’ Winners’ Careers Give Clues To Lee DeWyze’s Future

Will the season-nine champ be a Kelly Clarkson or a Taylor Hicks? By Eric Ditzian Lee DeWyze Photo: FOX “Oh my God. I don’t know. This is amazing. Thank you guys so much for everything,” Lee DeWyze said late on Wednesday night’s “American Idol” finale . And thus, a new champion was born into the world. As he heads straight to his career as a professional recording artist, the most obvious question is: Will he be as successful in the music biz as he was on a reality-TV competition? MTV News studied the history of “Idol” winners for clues about how the ninth-season champ’s career might turn out. Kelly Clarkson, Season One : The first “Idol” champ set a crazy-high bar for all who came after her. You want album sales? A double-platinum debut. A sophomore disc that went platinum six times. You want awards? Two Grammys. You want staying power? Her latest disc hit the #1 Billboard spot. And how about we just forget about “From Kelly to Justin,” OK? This summer she’ll head out with the Lilith Fair tour. Success score: 5 out of 5 “Idol” stars Ruben Studdard, Season Two : While the Velvet Teddy Bear has the best nickname of any “Idol” winner, there’s nothing superlative about his track record as a recording artist. Though his first disc hit the #1 Billboard spot on its way to platinum status, the trend ever since has been downhill. His 2004 release, I Need an Angel, went only gold, and his third effort was even less impressive. His last studio album delivered his worst sales numbers, and his greatest-hits disc moved so few units we’re embarrassed to print the actual tally. But hey, he looked great on Wednesday’s show, slimmed down and rocking a dapper suit. Success score: 2.5 out of 5 “Idol” stars Fantasia Barrino, Season Three : Fantasia’s rendition of “Summertime” might be the finest “Idol” performance ever, a master class in vocal dexterity and emotive singing. The competition was hers from then on. Her post-“Idol single, “I Believe,” was #1 on Billboard for four straight weeks. But her first disc broke the streak of #1 Billboard hits for “Idol” winners. Still, Free Yourself went platinum. Like Ruben, Fantasia has struggled to follow through on her early success. Starting in 2007, she appeared on Broadway in Oprah Winfrey’s “The Color Purple,” and in 2010 she launched her own VH1 reality show, “Fantasia for Real.” The singer is at work on a third album that she somewhat self-consciously promised (during an appearance on this year’s “Idol”) would return her to her musical roots. Success score: 3 out of 5 “Idol” stars Carrie Underwood, Season Four : The show’s only country champ holds the title of highest-selling “Idol” contestant ever with over 11.5 million albums sold. Her first album went platinum seven times, and her second went platinum twice. Her third album again hit the top Billboard spot and went platinum. She saw Clarkson’s two Grammys, then raised her three more. Nine singles went #1 on the Billboard country chart. Another single, “Home Sweet Home,” was season eight’s farewell song. In April, Underwood became the first woman ever to be named the Academy of Country Music’s Entertainer of the Year twice. You can’t get much better than that. Success score: 5 out of 5 “Idol” stars Taylor Hicks, Season Five There’s always got to be someone at the bottom, right? That poor soul is the leader of the Soul Patrol. Hicks had a fast start after the show ended — a #2 Billboard debut that eventually went platinum — but his first effort was for many years the poorest-selling debut disc from an “Idol” winner (Kris Allen now holds that ignominious title). But unlike Allen, Hicks never sold singles, and his songs barely ever made it onto the radio. His second album tanked, and he spent last summer traipsing around the country with the touring company of “Grease.” What passes for his summer tour is a whopping two dates: one at the Syracuse Balloon Fest and another at the 7th Annual Rocky Mountain Power Jam. Success score: 1 out of 5 “Idol” stars Jordin Sparks, Season Six : At 16, Sparks was the youngest singer to win “American Idol.” Precocious she was. A huge seller she ain’t, at least when it comes to albums. Her first album sold the fewest copies of any debut from an “Idol” winner, though it ended up going platinum and out-selling Hick’s disc. Her second album cracked the top 10 but didn’t even go gold. Yet she has three top-10 singles (one of which was a duet with Chris Brown) and has sold 9 million singles, thrusting her into the ranks of the top “Idol” performers of all time. She’s got a packed summer of tour dates coming down the line. Success score: 3.5 out of 5 “Idol” stars David Cook, Season Seven : Cook’s got both platinum singles and a platinum debut, but no #1 album, and that puts him in the middle of the “Idol” pack. And that album, overseen by superstar rock producer Rob Cavallo (Green Day, My Chemical Romance), left much to be desired. Last year he embarked on an impressive, 30-plus-date summer tour, but this summer he’ll hardly be seen out on the road. Cook, who was at a cancer benefit instead of Wednesday’s season finale, is going to have to deliver an impressive sophomore effort to leapfrog the “Idol” winners currently ranked ahead of him. Success score: 3 out of 5 “Idol” stars Kris Allen, Season Eight : It’s early in his career, but there’s no doubting Allen has struggled. His debut disc has sold less than 300,000 copies. On the other hand, his singles have performed respectably well when it comes to radio play. He’ll hit the road with the Barenaked Ladies this summer. It’s an open question whether or not he’ll ever enjoy a higher profile than Adam Lambert, the singer he vanquished on season eight. Then again, he rocked a solo performance on Wednesday night’s finale, and Lambert was sitting out, reportedly resting his voice before heading out on tour. Success score: 2.5 out of 5 “Idol” stars Which past “Idol” winner is your favorite? Whose career path do you think Lee will follow? Talk about it in the comments. The Greatest Summer Jams Of The Modern Era

Just in time for the warm weather, we compile the best sun-drenched tunes since 1991, in Bigger Than the Sound. By James Montgomery Photo: Universal Think back to every awesome/romantic/borderline-insane thing you’ve ever done during the summer. Chances are, there was music playing when you did it. And it was probably playing very, very loudly. That’s because, perhaps more than any other time of the year, summer is practically made for music. It’s when we pump up, strip down, make terrible decisions and basically have the times of our lives. And, somewhat fittingly, music is always there with us. It’s the soundtrack to our every hookup, breakdown and tanning mishap. It’s what’s in the air at the beach, the time-share or the club (well, either that or Axe body spray). It’s part of our memories, along with that terrible tattoo you got down in Panama City. So for a song to become a summer jam, it’s got to be great (and slightly stupid, but that’s a column for another day). And since the official kickoff of summer 2010 is right around the corner, I’ve decided to compile a list of the greatest of the great — the best, brightest, dumbest, funnest, lightest, loosest, freakiest, goofiest summer songs of all time. All of them are special, all of them are classics. And yes, I spent waaay too much time working on this. What can I say? I freaking love the summer. Anyway, rather than just prattle on, I reached out to some of my favorite writers — all of whom are certified summer-jam experts, btw — and had them contribute their favorites too. The only thing I told them was that the cutoff point was 1991 (that’s when Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince released their epochal “Summertime,” after all), and then I sat back and watched the brilliance flood my inbox. Here’s what they submitted, along with my picks. It’s a definitive list, as submitted by some of the best in the business. These are the Greatest Summer Jams of the Modern Era. Amos Barshad, New York magazine’s Vulture blog The Notorious B.I.G., “Hypnotize” : He died a month before it was officially released, and I think it was clear then it’d be awhile until someone else would be making this level of lyrically brilliant, commercially viable hip-hop. Also, the mermaid fish tank in the video was awesome. Young Money, “Every Girl” : Too raunchy to actually take the Song of the Summer crown, but hung around for a while last season, probably because the sentiment is so universal. Rihanna, “Umbrella” : If you don’t like “Umbrella,” do us all a favor and move back to the USSR. Third Eye Blind, “Semi-Charmed Life” : Stephan Jenkins believes in the sand beneath his toes, and so do I. Adam Stewart, MTV News house-music expert/ dude from New Jersey Ti

Teacher in trouble after students don Klan robes

At this moment in history this teacher did this? And in Atlanta? Our kids are doomed. ATLANTA (AP) — A North Georgia teacher is on administrative leave and could lose her job after she allowed four students to don mock Ku Klux Klan outfits for a final project in a high school class Thursday, administrators said. The sight of people in Klan-like outfits upset some black students at the school and led at least one parent to complain. Catherine Ariemma, who teaches the advanced placement course combining U.S. history with film education, could face punishment ranging from suspension to termination, Lumpkin County School Superintendent Dewey Moye said Monday. Ariemma has spent nearly six years teaching in the rural county about 75 miles north of Atlanta. She told The Associated Press Monday that students were covering an important and sensitive topic – but one that she might handle differently in the future. “It was poor judgment on my part in allowing them to film at school,” Ariemma said. “… That was a hard lesson learned.” The incident happened at Lumpkin County High School. Ariemma said her students spend the year viewing films and later create their own films to watch in class. She said the students brainstorm and pick topics to cover. This particular class decided to trace the history of racism in America. She said the class has 15 students of multiple races, but no blacks. A group of five students took on the subject, which included covering the history of the notorious white supremacist group which had large chapters in Stone Mountain, Ga. and Tuscaloosa, Ala. One student filmed and did not wear sheets, she said. “The kids brought the sheets in, they had SpongeBob party hats underneath to make it shaped like a cone,” Ariemma said. “They cut out the eyes so they could see.” Ariemma said she led the students through a cafeteria to another location where they shot the scene. Later, she said another teacher approached her. “That's when I heard there were a couple of students who were upset,” she said. Ariemma said she wasn't able to find those students to explain the project to them. Monday, student Cody Rider told Atlanta's WSB-TV that his cousin was among those who saw the group in white sheets and was frightened. “I got mad and stood up and I tried to go handle it,” he told the TV station. Moye said a black parent went to the school to complain that evening. Ariemma has no history of missteps at the school, Moye said, but administrators of the roughly 90 percent white school system are taking the incident seriously. “This stuff happened in history. Do you ignore it? No,” he said. “But you certainly don't walk the hallway in the garb.” Ariemma says administrators will review the film and decide if it will be shown in the classroom. She said the students who wore the sheets were shaken when they realized hat other students were upset. added by: onemalefla
