Fantastic Fest: Frodo Loses Epic Nerd Fantasy Boxing Match

A quick update from Austin, where the Fantastic Debates took place at midnight pitting filmmakers, actors, and astrophysicists against each other in spoken debates before pounding it out in the boxing ring: If you were betting on Elijah Wood to reign victorious over Lord of the Rings buddy Dominic Monaghan (or in Hobbit terms, Frodo vs. Merry, who were debating the awesomeness of another fantasy nerd obsession, World of Warcraft), you’d have lost.

Check Out Two New Photos From The Hobbit: Bilbo and Gandalf Face Off

Thanks to a couple of new stills in Empire magazine, the latest pictures of Ian McKellen and Martin Freeman’s sepia-hued prestige in The Hobbit are upon us! And they look… so shadowy. Like a Middle-earth version of There Will Be Blood , where Martin Freeman plays H.W. and McKellen plays a post-apocalyptic version of Daniel Plainview (whose Pringles mustache is replaced with a fibrous beard). Get a load of “young” Gandalf and a new quote from Peter Jackson.

‘The Hobbit’: First-Look Photos Of Bilbo, Gandalf Hit Net

Martin Freeman’s eagerly anticipated prequel Bilbo Baggins turns up in character, complete with hairy feet and pointy ears. By Eric Ditzian Martin Freeman in “The Hobbit” Photo: New Line Cinema via Entertainment Weekly Although he’s busy once again creating a Middle Earth-like world in the wilds of New Zealand, “Hobbit” director Peter Jackson has done an excellent job keeping fans of J. R. R. Tolkien’s fantastical creations looped into the production. He’s been posting photos, videos and updates on his Facebook page for months — including a few pics of himself in what appears to be Bilbo Baggins’ home . But what we haven’t seen until now are official photos of the stars in character and on set. That’s all changing, thanks to three pics posted by Entertainment Weekly . One image features Martin Freeman as Bilbo, another focuses on Ian McKellan as Gandalf, and the last captures both Freeman and Jackson in that familiar home. The first photo is the one fans have been waiting years to see: a real-life representation of Bilbo himself. After all the production delays, the speculation and the rumors about the casting of the central character (James McAvoy? Daniel Radcliffe?), we finally are getting a look at Freeman (perhaps best known from the British version of “The Office”) in character, complete with hairy feet, pointy ears and shaggy hair. ”He fits the ears and he’s got some very nice feet,” Jackson told EW about Freeman’s portrayal of Bilbo. ”I think he’s got the biggest hobbit feet we’ve had so far. They’re a little bit hard to walk in, but he’s managed to figure out the perfect hobbit gait.” The second pic captures, in Gandalf, someone we’re very familiar with from the “Lord of the Rings” series but who will be surrounded by a new cast of characters in this prequel story, the first part of which hits theaters in December 2012. ”He’s in fantastic form,” Jackson said of McKellan. ”In a way, his role in ‘The Hobbit’ has more technical difficulties than ‘Lord of the Rings’ did, because he has scenes with 14 smaller characters — obviously the dwarves and the hobbit are shorter. … I remember saying to him [ laughs ], ‘Look, this isn’t “Waiting for Godot” or “King Lear.” This is “The Hobbit.” This is the real thing. ‘ ” The final photo takes us inside an on-set conversation with Jackson and Freeman, one of roughly a zillion the two are likely to have, considering how long the shoot will last. ”There’s no way you can pace yourself for shoots like these,” the director said. ”When we were going through the schedule for ‘The Hobbit,’ I felt a terrible drop in my stomach when I saw that we’d be shooting for 254 days. We’re only 12 days short of ‘The Lord of the Rings,’ even though we’re only doing two movies. When I saw that, I had to sort of pick myself up off the floor and carry on.” Tell us what you think of the new “Hobbit” photos in the comments section! Precious: Andy Serkis Will Act as Second Unit Director on The Hobbit

As if reprising his role of Gollum in The Hobbit wasn’t enough for Andy Serkis, the motion capturing actor will also work as second unit director during the New Zealand film shoot. “I think I understand Peter’s sensibility and we have a common history of understanding Middle Earth,” Serkis told THR . “A lot of the crew from The Lord of the Rings was returning to work on The Hobbit . There is really a sense of Peter wanting people around him who totally understand the material and the work ethic.” No truth to the rumor that Serkis will also handle the costume jewelry on the set. TIMELINE: The Hobbit’s Troubled 75-Year Journey From Page to Screen

On Monday, somewhat incredibly, The Hobbit finally started filming . Amid the seemingly weekly reports of turmoil and lawsuits surrounding the two-part Hobbit film over the last few years, it’s easy to forget just how long this movie has been in production — and the minor miracle it is that not only is The Hobbit being filmed, but Peter Jackson is behind the camera. So let’s take a quick look back — a “Dummy’s Guide,” if you will — at the timeline associated with the long, torturous journey that finally got us to where we are today.

Exclusive: Elijah Wood Opens Up About His ‘Hobbit’ Role

‘The way that it will fit in will not infringe upon the integrity of ‘The Hobbit,’ ‘ actor tells MTV News at Sundance. By Eric Ditzian Elijah Wood Photo: MTV News Elijah Wood has long maintained that he’d never suit back up as Frodo Baggins — the role he pioneered in the Oscar-winning “Lord of the Rings” trilogy” — in an adaptation of “The Hobbit” unless the appearance avoided gimmickry and fit within the larger context of J. R. R. Tolkien’s legendary creation. Well, now Wood is officially returning to Middle-earth, and in what might be his first public comments about the upcoming project, the 29-year-old actor told MTV News that, although Frodo was never in Tolkien’s “Hobbit,” the character’s appearance in the movies makes sense for Jackson’s adaptation. “It’s a very small piece, and I think that’s the most appropriate,” Wood said when we caught up with him at the Sundance Film Festival , where he was promoting “Fight for Your Right Revisited,” a short film by Beastie Boys MC Adam Yauch. “Obviously, Frodo’s not alive within the context of ‘The Hobbit’ piece. So I jumped at the chance to be a part of it and see everyone and have a little reunion. It’ll be surreal.” While Wood didn’t delve into detail about the exact nature of his role — rumor has it he’ll appear in the beginning of each of the two films — he emphasized that Tolkien fans should not be worried. “I’d heard about it a little while ago,” he explained of the concept. “It’s an idea that Fran [Walsh] and Peter and Philippa [Boyens], the writers, came up with. The way that it will fit in will not infringe upon the integrity of ‘The Hobbit.’ It’ll fit and it’ll be appropriate. “It’s just a gift,” he added. “It’s a gift to be able to go back to New Zealand. It’s largely the same crew, the same creative team. It’s seven years since we finished on the last film, and it’s an opportunity to go back and have a reunion with everyone.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Hobbit, Part 1.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
