Nicki Minaj Makes ‘Fearless’ Statement With Music

‘I don’t ask girls to wear pink hair; they just do it,’ Nicki Minaj tells MTV News of her growing popularity. By Rob Markman Nicki Minaj Photo: MTV News ORLANDO, Florida — Who says divas have to be difficult? After her performance at the start of the NBA’s 2012 All-Star Game on Sunday, Nicki Minaj graciously invited MTV News into her dressing room before she even got a chance to catch her breath. Once inside, the reigning rap queen spoke on balancing her pop status with her hip-hop background and used her recent Grammy performance to contextualize things. “That’s just who I am. I was a theater major; I studied theater,” Nicki Minaj told MTV News. “It’s funny because, even with the Grammys, that wasn’t the first time I’ve done theater. Like ‘Moment 4 Life,’ I did a skit I was pretending to be an old lady, Martha, when I did ‘Right Thru Me,’ I did a skit. I always try to do that when I have the forum to do it.” Before she took the stage to perform “Roman Holiday” at the 2012 Grammy Awards ceremony, Nicki prefaced her stage show with the “Exorcism of Roman” mini-movie. Her recent theatrics, which have drawn a ton of criticism, aren’t a far cry from the skits that appeared in her “Moment 4 Life” and “Right Thru Me” videos. Nicki may have started out a rapper, but she has grown to be so much more. A number of her recently released songs, which are being used to set up her sophomore Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, have been pop affairs. From the RedOne-produced “Starships” to “Roman Holiday,” there will be songs that will exist outside of the canon of traditional hip-hop. However, Nicki’s recently released “Roman Reloaded” single featuring Lil Wayne proves that she can still spit bars with the best of them. (After all, she did rank #4 on MTV News’ “Hottest MCs in the Game” list.) Still, Nicki insists that she is merely being herself. “I guess I am pop culture just because what I’m doing seems to be popular. When people want to do what you’re doing, it’s kinda popular,” she reasoned. “I don’t ask girls to wear pink hair; they just do it. It’s not about black or white; I think it’s just a statement. It doesn’t matter which color you are; it’s just a statement of being fearless.” Being fearless is also about knowing when to cut an interview short. “OK, bye, y’all. Get out of my dressing room,” Nicki joked. What did you think of Nicki Minaj’s performance at the NBA All-Star Game? Leave your comment below! Justin Bieber’s Top 18 Moments: The Countdown Continues!

Before Bieber celebrates his 18th birthday on Thursday, we’re counting down his best moments so far. Check out #13 to #6! By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: Lester Cohen/ WireImage Justin Bieber is one day away from turning 18, and we’re counting down his 18 greatest moments so far in honor of the occasion. This week, we kicked things off by looking back on some of the highlights, from Justin crashing this year’s Oscars to his headline-making romance with girlfriend Selena Gomez. In the latest installment of our Bieber birthday countdown, we pick up with #13 to #6, narrowing down the early achievements that helped shape the teen into the pop superstar we know and love. We’ll celebrate this week until the final reveal on Justin’s big day on Thursday. What will be the #1 moment? You’ll have to keep it locked at MTVNews.com! 13. Bieber Drops “Baby” Video In February 2010, Justin dropped his star-making “Baby” video . Proving he had lots of swag, he enlisted Ludacris and Drake to appear in the bowling-party-themed clip, which featured a romance with his pretty leading lady. The video also displayed Bieber’s budding persona as a charming pop Romeo that no girl can resist. “It starts off, I really like this girl, but we didn’t [get] along; we couldn’t be together,” he told MTV News while shooting the video. “Basically, I want her back and [I’m] kind of going through the whole thing. I’m chasing her around, trying to get her, and she’s kind of playing hard to get, but I’m persistent. I keep going.” 12. Justin’s Voice Changes No one is immune to puberty, and that includes teen stars. As Bieber continued to mature before our eyes, his voice also took a turn for the manly. But he wasn’t too worried about it. “Everyone’s voice changes. Puberty is a natural thing,” Bieber said in 2010. “I have the best vocal coach in the world and we’re working on my voice and doing what I need to do. It’s not like as soon as you hit puberty you stop singing. Usher is the best mentor in the world and he survived puberty. He tells me what to do, what not to do.” 11. Bieber Goes Hip-Hop Between his rap persona, Shawty Mane , and getting love from a number of A-list hip-hop pals like Kanye West, Luda, Drake and Lil Wayne , Bieber has proved that swag is more than just a hashtag to him. This kid can legitimately hang with some of the hardest guys in the game — and hold his own. 10. 2011 Grammy Awards At last year’s Grammys, Bieber seemed poised to take home a trophy, but he famously lost in the prestigious Best New Artist category to Esperanza Spalding . He shook off the loss, though, and vowed that one day he would take home Grammy gold. He’s set to release his next album, Believe, in 2012. Grammy voters, take note! 9. Bieber Drops My World 2.0 For his second EP, My World 2.0, Bieber upped the ante when he enlisted folks like The-Dream to produce. While the record was released in March 2010, only months after his first EP, My World, the follow-up managed to eclipse the original thanks to memorable songs like “U Smile,” “Baby” and “Up.” 2.0 helped spark the frenzy known as Bieber Fever. The teen star even scored an MTV special on the series “Diary.” 8. Bieber Goes Under the Mistletoe He invited us all to premiere his video for “Mistletoe,” the lead single off his holiday-themed Under the Mistletoe. When he sat down with MTV News for his “MTV First” interview , he talked all about shooting the video in Nashville, his desire to make a cool Christmas album and getting the chance to work with heroes Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men. 7. Fans Welcomed to My World In 2009, Bieber dropped his first EP . Full of sugary-sweet pop, the songs launched him from viral Internet sensation to full-on star. The album was rife with puppy-love tracks that displayed Bieber’s ear for melodies and recalled some of the great pop music of the past from stars like New Kids on the Block and even Michael Jackson. 6. First Film, ‘Never Say Never,’ Released Bieber’s first foray into the world of big-screen blockbusters came courtesy of a 3-D film, “Never Say Never,” that served as a documentary and a concert film. It addressed any of his haters with in-depth interviews with the folks who know him best and Bieber himself, who recalled his personal hardships before making it big. If that wasn’t enough for the Beliebers, it also featured a 3-D Bieber shaking his floppy hair around. Share your birthday wishes for Justin and weigh in on the top 18 moments on our Facebook page! Stick with MTV News all week as we count down Justin Bieber ‘s 18 greatest moments leading up to his 18th birthday. On Thursday, March 1 — the teen star’s official big day — we will reveal the #1 greatest moment in his career so far. Plus, stay tuned for even more Bieber as we celebrate the milestone! Flo Rida Brings A Good Feeling To NBA All-Star Weekend

The rapper performed his record “Good Feeling” during the Saturday activities for night two of All-Star weekend. Flo Rida Photo: MTV News Orlando, Florida– When it comes to music Flo Rida is a definite all-star, but before he made it big on the radio the Miami rapper had some pretty big hoop dreams. He didn’t get to shoot the rock this weekend but Flo set the Amway Arena on fire on Saturday night when he performed his hit single “Good Feeling” moments before the NBA kicked off their annual All-Star Slam Dunk Contest. “Early on with my boys, we played basketball and loved it so much and one day dreamed of playing basketball,” Flo told MTV News immediately after his performance. “So for me to go out there in an environment where I may not be an NBA player, but I’m definitely looked at as a celebrity as well, it’s just a blessing and I get chills just thinking about it.” Flo performed his Etta James-sampling “Good Feeling” flanked by a number of energetic dancers. It was a lively showing and for the rapper an unforgettable on as well. “I definitely enjoyed myself out there, you seen me jump around all over the stage,” he said. Performing during the live television broadcast was a thrill for Flo and so was watching the Slam Dunk Contest, which NBA baller Jeremy Evans won thanks to a move where he dunked two different basketballs in one jump. Flo Rida, an accomplished hit-maker who usually is out touring is also looking forward to spending time with his homeys during the star-studded weekend. “Besides that just hanging out with a bunch of my friends who I normally wouldn’t see around this time because I’m doing gigs,” he said when asked about his weekend highlights. Flo just narrowly missed his pal Rick Ross last night at the Sheltair Executive Airport Hanger in Orlando. Rozay threw an all-star bash and partied alongside Meek Mill, DJ Holiday and Maybach crew members Dre Films and Spiff TV. Ross and company left, just as Flo was coming in the club. No biggie though, the “Good Feeling” rapper kept the party going into early Sunday morning with R&B singer Pleasure P. ‘Safe House’ Rules Holiday Weekend Box Office

Denzel Washington’s latest ekes out a win over ‘Ghost Rider’ sequel and ‘The Vow.’ By Ryan J. Downey Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds in “Safe House” Photo: Universal Pictures Denzel Washington topped the box office over the holiday weekend as a comic book sequel flamed out. Two holdovers from last week, “Safe House” and “The Vow,” were neck and neck for the top spot during the four-day Presidents’ Day weekend and helped push box-office receipts to 11 percent over the same period last year. Washington’s “Safe House” was #1, with a four-day total of $28.4 million. “The Vow” followed just behind with $26.6 million, according to studio estimates. “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island” was #3 with $26.4 million thanks to a very strong Monday. “Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance” opened at #4 with $25.7 million, followed by the debut of the Reese Witherspoon-starring “This Means War” at #5 with $20.4 million. “Safe House” has made $82.6 million thus far, making it the second-best 10-day run for Washington, just behind “American Gangster.” The drama looks likely to pass the $100 million mark, which will make it the fourth movie in the 57-year-old actor’s career to do so. “The Vow” has earned $88.5 million thus far, which means it is now the highest-grossing movie ever for the Sony/ Screen Gems brand. The second “Ghost Rider” film, based on the Marvel Comics antihero, opened with less than half of the 2007 original’s $45.4 million debut. Nicolas Cage reprises the role of Johnny Blaze in “Spirit of Vengeance,” which, despite featuring a darker take on the supernatural motorcycle rider (courtesy of the directing duo behind “Crank”), suffered even worse reviews than its predecessor. At press time, “Ghost Rider” sat at 27 percent on Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer , which averages reviews from critics, while the sequel sat at 15 percent. The weekend’s other new wide release, “The Secret World of Arrietty,” was #9 on the box-office chart with $8.1 million. The debut for the animated film, which features English-speaking actors recording new performances in the Japanese film, met with Disney’s reported expectations. Similarly, the romance-meets-action of “This Means War” wasn’t far off from the debuts of similar fare like “Knight & Day,” “The Tourist” or “Killers,” all of which had mostly negative reviews and opened between $15 and $20 million. “Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menance” in 3-D suffered a bigger second-week decline than the similar 3-D re-release of Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast,” but still added enough to the prequel’s all-time box-office total to push it past the original “Star Wars” to become the fourth-highest-grossing film of all time. “Phantom Menace” made $10.2 million over the four-day weekend for a domestic theater total of $36 million for the 3-D version. Two smaller but critically acclaimed pictures continued to benefit from awards season momentum over the weekend. The latest picture from Alexander Payne (“Sideways”), “The Descendants,” starring George Clooney, passed the $75 million mark, while silent film “The Artist” passed $25 million. Both movies are up for Best Picture at this year’s Academy Awards , among other nominations. Nicki Minaj’s New Single “Starships”: Listen

Nicki Minaj Explains Her Concept Behind Grammy Performance

Originally posted here:

Okay so um, Nicki Minaj probably made history for the worst Grammy performance EVER! First she shows up on the red carpet with a Pope (he’s wearing all-white of course) while she poses in an all red cape (assuming she’s the devil, I really have no idea..*shrugs*) But fast-forward to the performance, thinking Nicki would perform one of her hits and just kill it, she performed some type of demonic ritual/exorcist on stage. Everything went left field, leaving viewers baffled, confused, and disgusted. “Nicki chatted with Ryan Seacrest and explained the concept behind her Grammy performance as well as her decision to walk the red carpet with a Pope. She also spoke on what it was like to work with an icon like Madonna for the Superbowl as well as her initial disappointment in M.I.A for flipping the bird during the half-time show.” On why she walked with the religious figure on the red carpet He is major part of the story and the movie that I’m writing about one of my alter egos. His name is Roman. Basically the religious figure is there because he was called on by Roman’s mom to rehabilitate him. On her Grammy “Red Riding Hood” outfit I wasn’t going to do the red carpet. I was backstage preparing to have my performance outfit and not do a carpet and go and sit down. My people wanted me to do it. I had this amazing robe made for me by Versace sent from Milan. I said, “Oh, my God I have to wear this. They were so generous. They sent me so much stuff  and I was originally going to wear it during the performance, but when I got it, it was a little heavy for the performance. I said, “Hey, it’s only one way to do it and that’s the red carpet.” On The decision to perform “Roman Holiday” First of all, The Grammys chose ‘Roman Holiday.’ The producers of the Grammys came into the studio, and they heard ‘Roman Holiday’ and I could not play them another record after they heard that. They went crazy. I could have chosen to do a no-brainer pop song, but I can’t do it anymore. I have to stay true to what I’m doing. Seeing how comfortable I was last night, I was like, “Oh, my God”, this was the best choice because my fan base, the Roman Empire and the Barbz they understand every single thing that I’m doing because Roman was created two years ago. Roman isn’t something new just coming out. I’ve been writing the story for a very long time and yesterday was his coming out party. Laurianne [Gibson] is such a good friend of mine and she did an amazing job bringing my vision to life. It was very literal if you know who Roman is and what he’s all about but if you don’t know the Roman character then you have to kind of digest it. On the concept of the performance I had this vision for him to be sort of exorcised—or actually he never gets exorcised—but people around him tell him he’s not good enough because he’s not normal, he’s not blending in with the average Joe. And so his mother is scared and the people around him are afraid because they’ve never seen anything like him. He wanted to show that not only is he amazing and he’s sure of himself and confident, but he’s never gonna change, he’s never gonna be exorcised. Even when they throw the holy water on him, he still rises above.” On Working with Madonna for the Super Bowl Meeting Madonna changed my life. Working with Madonna changed my life. Rehearsing with Madonna for two weeks changed my life. You look at these amazing women you have to realize that a lot of work goes into this. I for the first time refused to do anything. I didn’t go to any parties. I didn’t do anything. This performance was it. This is the first performance that I’m proud of  in my entire career because I saw Madonna’s outcome when she sacrificed, and how she rehearses and rehearses. Everyone there was like, “Oh, my God we got it” and she was like,” No, I want you to know this choreography in your sleep.” You know what? We did know it in out sleep by the time we got on the Super Bowl stage. When I saw that, it inspired me so much… the same way [Lil] Wayne started really becoming a beast as a rapper. The Madonna situation inspired me to give it my all in terms of rehearsal and in terms of bringing my vision to life. In terms of you know what, “Hey, I’ll pay for this performance myself because it means that much to me.” On M.I.A. flipping the bird during the half time show My first feeling was disappointment only because of my respect for Madonna. Even though I’m a coco lady too but I would never be able to do it off of the strength of Madonna. There are fines that goes into these things  so I just thought “Oh, my God I hope they don’t penalize Madonna.”  In hindsight, Madonna knows what kind of artist M.I.A is and it was her decision to take that risk with all of us. She [Madonna] has done some crazy things to become the icon that she is, and I think that’s why she was able to forgive M.I.A…. Me personally, I couldn’t see myself doing that. Just out of respect for Madonna, because I just wouldn’t want any backlash coming back on Madonna. Meanwhile, Nicki Minaj had some words on twitter for folks that weren’t happy with her Grammy Awards performance (some went as far as calling her a devil worshipper). She tweeted: Were they offended by ‘the devil inside’??? Shut-up & watch the movie bitch! #ThrowsPopcornATtheBackOfYoHeadHoe! lmaoooooooooooooooooooooooo Not, 2, Not 1…I wish I at least had a point five percentile worth of f*cks to give right now. Bewp! > RT @DeeTheeNinja: If she was up there half naked and popping her cuka nobody would be saying sh-t….Basic hoes! Thanks to NecoleBitchie.com. Listen to Full Audio.

Grammy Night Winners And Losers

Adele, Jennifer Hudson, LL Cool J nail it, while Nicki Minaj stumbles. By Gil Kaufman Adele wins at the 54th Annual Grammy Awards Photo: Robyn Beck/ AFP/ Getty Images Any way you cut it, Sunday night’s Grammys were huge for Adele , the Foo Fighters and Kanye West . All three artists came away with an armload of golden gramophones at a ceremony that artfully managed to celebrate the vibrancy of contemporary music while finding just the right way to pay tribute to fallen diva Whitney Houston . Adele swept the night’s major categories , taking Song, Record and Album of the Year on the way to putting a check beside all six of her nominations, with the Foos just behind with five wins and an absent Kanye nabbing four. But who really stole the spotlight at the show and who managed to win without nabbing any hardware? Let’s take a look at the true winners and losers at the ceremony. Winner: LL Cool J Not only did Uncle L get some serious prime-time exposure and represent for hip-hop on music’s biggest night, but he opened the show with a thoughtful, perfectly measured prayer for Houston that set the tone for the entire evening. Winner: Jennifer Hudson Note to any singer thinking about tackling “I Will Always Love You” ever again: Don’t bother. Hudson ‘s spine-tingling, perfectly pitched tribute to Whitney was a show-stopping cover of the trickiest, biggest song in the late singer’s repertoire that nearly stole the night. It was made all the more dramatic by the feeling that avowed superfan Hudson was legitimately on the verge of tears throughout the performance. Loser: Nicki Minaj Though it had plenty of energy, Nicki’s confusing, all-over-the-place “Exorcist”-meets-sexy-gothic/horror religious allegory was Grammy night’s most polarizing performance . Parts of “Roman’s Holiday” felt ripped right from the Madonna and Lady Gaga handbook of outrage — fitting, since Gaga’s former right-hand woman/choreographer, Laurieann Gibson, was Nicki’s collaborator — but some hip-hop purists felt she was reaching for the pop brass ring too hard. Loser: Anyone who thought they were going to win a major award As if there had been any question going into the night who would take the three biggies, it became clear, despite some tough competition from Best New Artist Bon Iver, Bruno Mars, the Foo Fighters, Gaga and Kanye, that this would be Adele’s night. Winner: Adele See above. Her comeback performance and well-deserved win were a shot in the arm to the recording industry and a win for the Academy for recognizing new talent. Winner: Foo Fighters The nice-guy Grammy-bait band had a big night and two high-energy performances that cemented their status as their generation’s most consistent, hard-working rock act. Plus, they pulled off that mashup with deadmau5 while totally keeping their dignity intact. Winner: EDM/Skrillex As if the millions of rave-happy kids across the planet needed the validation, Sunday night was the global coming-out party for the electronic dance music genre. Skrillex nabbed three awards , and the tribute segment featuring deadmau5 and David Guetta was one of the night’s most unexpected surprises. Loser: Lady Gaga Used to being the center of attention, Gaga kept her seat all night as she tried to look comfortable in a netted mask, metallic outfit and oversized golden cane. Winner: Chris Brown Making his return to the show three years after he scratched following his assault on then-girlfriend Rihanna , > link type=”content” id=”1679084″> Brown commanded the stage with an acrobatic performance. More importantly, while accepting the Best R&B Album award for F.A.M.E., he kept it brief and thanked the two constituencies that paved his road to redemption: his fans and the Recording Academy. Nicki Minaj Resurrects Spooky Roman Zolanski At Grammys

MC’s rap alter ego levitates and speaks in tongues against a fiery backdrop at Sunday’s show. By Tomika L. Anderson Nicki Minaj performs at the 2012 Grammy Awards Photo: Robyn Beck/ AFP/ Getty Images Nicki Minaj may have walked away Grammy -less on Sunday (February 12), but she still managed to deliver one of the most talked-about performances of the night. In the show’s final act the animated rap star — who lost out to Bon Iver for “Best New Artist” — channeled her infamous alter ego Roman Zolanski onstage, leading the audience through a rap exorcism of sorts. At one point, she even levitated, while speaking in tongues and jumping around against a fiery backdrop. Minaj caused a Twitter frenzy earlier in the night when she hit the red carpet wearing a blood-red, hooded robe accompanied by a man dressed like the Pope, and she continued her spirited church-act onstage. Minaj marched out sporting a brown ball gown and long, bleached-blond locks, and performed a skit before launching into her new single, “Roman Holiday,” from her upcoming sophomore album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded. It was a show that Lady Gaga (who was also missed by the Grammy fairy this go-round) would have been proud of. In a pre-taped skit, Minaj was surrounded by stained glass and other religious imagery, eerily putting on lipstick, singing “I Feel Pretty.” She then climbed a wall to have an exchange with the strange Pope-like figure, a man who’s real identity remains unknown. After being strapped to a leather lab table onstage, she rapped backed by a goth-looking church choir that sang a haunting version of “Come All Ye Faithful.” At the crescendo, she was lifted by an invisible rope into the Grammy sky. Shooting flames helped to complete the fiery, head-scratching number.
