Cam’ron Explains Why He Set Up Shop In Atlanta

By Shaheem Reid Cam’ron Photo: MTV News ATLANTA — Harlem rap king Cam’ron has enough bread to set up shop anywhere. He’s had ties to Florida and he’s heavy in the Midwest. Now, Killa has packed his bags and headed down South. Cam has temporarily relocated to Atlanta to record his next few projects. “We got a bunch of stuff going on,” Cam explained recently. “I got my solo album to do. We got ‘Killa Season 2’ soundtrack. ‘Cousin Bang, the Movie’ soundtrack. To keep it 100, down South, they got a lot of hot beats with no samples. We’re trying to just get a different vibe. I did four of my albums in New York, one in Chicago, one in L.A. But I never did an album recording in Atlanta. So me and Vado came down here to get a different vibe. We’re gonna be down here for a few months recording and working.” Killa has already started his next mixtape, a collaboration with DJ Holiday . Cam and Vado also just released their Boss of All Bosses tape with DJ Drama . The set features the new Vado single “Speakin Tongues.” “I don’t know what nobody thought,” Cam told Mixtape Daily of the song. “It’s me. This is what I do for a living. But shout to Vado. It’s his record. He got the beat and all that. I was like, ‘Nah, we gotta put that out immediately.’ “Let me break it down: We’re the U.N. That’s the name of the team,” Cam described. “The U.N. is ‘Us Now.’ We got an album coming out in August that’s gonna be stupid. Vado’s solo joint, look towards December [for that one]. But I want everybody to be focused on that U.N. album, ’cause when that comes out, it’s gonna be bananas. Stupid. This August. [‘Speakin Tongues’], this is the first single off of it.” “The song is about partying, living the Harlem life. Gucci Mane Says Warm Post-Prison Reception ‘Strengthens’ Him

The “Welcome Home Gucci Mane” campaign is in full swing. On Wednesday night, Gucci’s good friends Shawty Lo and DJ Holiday were waiting at the Fulton County Jail to greet him upon his release. On Wednesday night, a host of other Gucci supporters gathered at the Georgian Terrace hotel in Atlanta for a dinner honoring the ATL street heavyweight. Monica, the Diplomats’ Chubbie Baby, Big Boi, Wale, Kandi Burruss, Jazze Pha, DJ Drama and L.A.D., Sean Garrett, Waka Flocka Flame and, of course, Lo and Holiday all came out to show love. Gucci LaFlare was a guest on the DJ Frank Ski V103 morning show on Thursday (May 13), where he reflected on the previous night’s festivities. “It makes me feel good. It strengthens me even more,” the Atlanta rapper said. While on-air, Gucci also revealed that his next album, The State vs. Radric Davis: The Appeal, is due out at the end of August. He told listeners that he would want to work with Andre 3000 and Jamie Foxx on this follow-up to his December ’09 project. When asked how jarring it was for him to go to prison last year, right before the release of The State vs. Radric Davis — an album that had the potential to be his superstar-making effort — Gucci said knowing some months earlier that he was going in made it somewhat easier. “It was little behind the scenes things that everybody didn’t know,” Gucci explained to Ski. “They had a warrant for my arrest about four or five months before I even went in. So I was already dealing with it. I was trying to do all I could in case I did go to jail, so I could keep it going. “I feel like I got a whole new beginning, like my career just started again,” he added. It’s a beautiful day. I got my boy DJ Holiday with me, first on sight. It’s about to go down, man.” “MTV, I told you we was gonna be here, baby,” Holiday said. “It feels good to be here,” Lo continued. “It’s finnin’ to be a very long summer. So MTV, y’all stay tuned. MTV, let’s get it.” Lo and Gucci’s friendship is based on many things, but they definitely have run-ins with the law in common. Shawty said he can relate to Gucci’s struggles in music and with the police. “Basically, me and Gucci, when my career started and Gucci’s career started, we was in the struggle. We was blackballed,” Lo said. “So me and Gucci, we feel like we’re brothers from a different mother. Just to be here, man, it feels good to be here. I been arrested 28 times, and I been convicted four times, so I know how it feels. The hip-hop police got it in [for us]. But at the end of the day, I’m here, thick or thin.” Holiday said that his and Lo’s support is genuine and not for publicity. “I ain’t about getting that look. We’re brothers,” the ATL mixtape king said. Holiday is also signed to Gucci’s label, 1017 Brick Squad. “We family. It’s bigger than that rap stuff. We had to be here. Lo had to be here. I had to be here. I ain’t about that. It’s about friendship and being a man and holding your man down. Calvin Borel Makes Kentucky Derby History

Calvin Borel grabbed the rail and didn’t let go Saturday, sloshing through the slop on another flawless ride to win his third Kentucky Derby in four years – a record for the history of the race. No man has ever won the race three times in a span of four years. The most wide-open Derby in years ended with a sure thing — Borel crossing the finish line and punching the air with this right fist, raising it toward the gray sky. The jockey’s magic touch gave trainer Todd Pletcher his first Derby victory after 24 failures. His ride nearly duplicated the one he turned in last year aboard 50-1 shot Mine That Bird, except he and Super Saver went off at lower odds and were never in last place. Borel was confident enough in his colt and his knowledge of his home track to take him off the lead in the early going of the 1 1/4-mile race at Churchill Downs. In all but one of his six previous races, Super Saver had never been farther back than second in the early stages. Borel knew that strategy wouldn’t work in a 20-horse Derby field on a tiring, sloppy track. Breaking from the No. 4 post, he immediately tucked his colt along the rail — a predictable move from the rider nicknamed “Bo-rail” — and there they stayed almost the entire way. Super Saver was timed in 2:04.45 as the second-choice behind favorite Lookin At Lucky, whose 6-1 odds tied Harlan’s Holiday in 2002 for the longest priced favorite in 136 runnings. He paid $18, $8.80 and $6. Trained by Nick Zito, Ice Box returned $11.20 and $8 after nipping Paddy O’Prado at the wire for second. Paddy O’Prado paid $7.40 to show. Pletcher let out a whoop and slapped his hands together after his colt crossed the finish line, snapping a skid that the Eclipse Award-winning trainer was eager to end. He seemed to have a lock on his first Derby win until expected favorite Eskendereya was withdrawn last weekend with a swollen leg. That left Pletcher with four horses in the race, but none was as highly regarded. And now that’s over, it’s time to watch the Mayweather vs Mosley live stream as the next big sports event for the day. Shop Your Indie Heart Out: Record Store Day is This Saturday

Stop your bitching about how there are no good albums and nowhere with a conscience to buy them. April 17 — this Saturday — is Record Store Day, the annual celebration of independent music stores. As an independent media company, we're all about supporting our like-minded independent establishments. Not only did we sign the praises of what's probably the coolest the holiday around last year, but we were there when Embedded artists Silversun Pickups even played music from their album swoon at Rasputin Music in San Francisco. Many of the Embedded Tour Stops also featured artists and bands stopping into their favorite indie spots as well: K'naan visits FatBeats LA Black Lips invade Fingerprints for an in-store performance Fucked Up raid Amoeba Music Each year, the organizers of Record Store Day create even more awesome videos, activities, and free events for people that love music. This year, Decibel Magazine and RED teamed up to create a mini magazine that features a free, 22-track metal sampler. REM, Them Crooked Vultures, and Embedded Tour Stop artists Passion Pit have all have limited edition box sets and EPs for sale at various shops. For gear heads, Zoom and Samson have teamed up to create a prize pack full of recording equipment while Sony and Touchtunes are holding a sweepstakes to give away CDs, LPs, and a Sony USB turntable. Some stores are even giving away free t-shirts to celebrate the 17th. And there wouldn't be record stores full of music to buy without artists supplying albums, so plenty of great bands have gotten involved.
