Drugs Are Bad M’Kay: Jada Pinkett-Smith’s Stepdad Reveals He And Her Mom Were Gone Off That Yayo, Takes Blame For Her “Many Addictions”

SMH @ this guy dry snitching after all these years… Jada Pinkett-Smith’s stepdad says he blames himself for some of the “many addictions” Jada recently revealed she had battled . Via Celebuzz reports : Jada Pinkett Smith’s recent admission that she battled “many addictions” may have shocked the world, but it only added more grief for the man who helped raise her. Warren A. Brown, now a successful attorney in Baltimore, Maryland, married Smith’s mom Adrienne Banfield Jones in 1979 when the actress was just 8-years-old. Although Jones has recently spoken openly about her drug abuse when her daughter was a child, this is the first time Smith’s stepdad has revealed what really went on under their roof. And he’s not proud of it. “At times I felt guilty,” Brown told Celebuzz. “I remember just the three of us in the house together and I knew I was high and so was her mother. “She didn’t know though, she was too young to recognize it. She didn’t see us doing anything. But I felt really bad because I thought this little girl deserves better than her parents (being) addicted.” Brown admits yayo was his drug of choice, but stopped short of revealing too much about his ex-wife’s substance abuse. “While we were both dealing with that, I was still going to court and she was going to school and working. She left it up to me to watch Jada,” he added. “It’s difficult to feel guilty. I don’t really blame myself, but I think about a couple things. I question that if I had not divorced myself from them, whether or not she would have fallen into addictions. And if I had been around I may have witnessed it and been able to pull her out of it.” Although he doesn’t know of any “addictions” Jada may have endured back then, he tries to remember only the good times they shared being “thick as thieves.” And there were many. “She was a sweet little girl. We were very close. It was me and Jada,” said Brown. “I was raising her while her mother was working and in college.” Brown recalls taking her on many “firsts,” including trips to New York City, Cape Cod, Virginia Beach and Jamaica. He even recalls a day trip to the movie theatre to see The Karate Kid, which brought back a flood of memories when he passed by a local theatre only to see her son Jaden on the marquee for the new installment in 2010. “We spent a lot of time together,” he said of their bond before he divorced her mother around 1986. “But once I separated from her and her mom, I quickly got remarried and my new wife asked that I distance myself from her. So it was a sudden departure for Jada, and it was always just the two of us.” He can’t help but think if he would have been there for her, she would have struggled less. “Anyone who knew of our relationship would not disagree that my estrangement with her may have played a part,” admitted Brown. “I tend to think that if I was there, I could have provided a positive role model. “I loved that little girl.” We hope he’s being genuine. It’s never too late to own up to your mistakes though — do you think he deserves some credit for that?

ChitChatter: Hollyweird Swirler Ellen Pompeo Complains “The Emmy’s Felt So Dated… I Didn’t See Any Diversity At All!”

We weren’t the only ones who noticed blacks being shafted at this year’s Emmy Awards . “Grey’s Anatomy” actress Ellen Pompeo also pointed out the lily-whiteness of this Sunday’s ceremony in an interview afterwards. Via US Weekly reports : As the star of ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy, Ellen Pompeo has been to more than a few awards shows. She knows what she likes and doesn’t like — and she didn’t like the 65th Annual Emmys on Sunday, Sept. 22. “I didn’t see any diversity in the Emmys at all,” the actress, 43, said in an interview on Monday, Sept. 23, one day after the telecast. “The Emmys felt so dated to me…That dance number was embarrassing. Did you see one person of color in that dance number?” (Sunday’s show actually featured two dance numbers — one with Neil Patrick Harris, Nathan Fillion, Sarah Silverman, and the Emmys Gold Dancers; and one choreographed by the nominees for Best Choreography. The latter featured interpretative dancing for several nominated shows, including Breaking Bad, Boardwalk Empire, Mad Men, American Horror Story, and The Big Bang Theory.) Pompeo went on to say that, unlike the Emmys, Grey’s Anatomy prides itself on having a diverse ensemble of stars including Sandra Oh, Chandra Wilson, James Pickens, Sara Ramirez, and Gaius Charles. “I’m extremely proud of our very, very diverse cast, which represents the world that I walk around in every day,” she said of the five-time Emmy-winning drama. “Grey’s” is definitely a diverse show but is anyone still watching it? Just sayin’! We do agree with Ellen that the Emmy’s could have done a better job representing diversity. SMH. Check out more photos of her swirly family below: WENN/FameFlynet Continue reading

Hip-Hop Baller Brawl: Bi-Polar “Thug” Game Puts His Fist In Brandon Jennings Mouth For Being “Disrespectful” At Hollyweird Club

It’s always something with Jayceon…smmfh Game Fights NBA Baller Brandon Jennings At Hollywood Day Party Via HipHollywood HipHollywood was inside Lure’s über popular day party “Toxic” this weekend where a fight went down between NBA star Brandon Jennings and The Game. Moments after we left the venue, multiple sources tell HH that the two men got into an argument over who could use the deejay’s microphone. Jennings was at Lure hosting his birthday party with friends, which didn’t sit well with the Compton rapper who frequents the club. “Game feels like Toxic is his, and he didn’t like that Jennings was hogging the microphone. He felt like he was being disrespected,” one person who witnessed the altercation tells us. “Game tried to have words with him, and it just escalated quickly and Game hit Brandon in the mouth,” another source says. Security quickly broke up the fight, and surprisingly allowed both men and their entourages to stick around. But, the party was ultimately shut down because fighting broke out again between both parties. Can’t invite ninjas nowhere…especially not ones with butterflies ugly cover-up tattoos on their face. John Singleton On White Directors Making Black Films: “Hollywood Feels Like It Doesn’t Need Us Anymore To Tell African-American Stories”

Kudos to John Singleton for speaking up on the growing trend of black films being made in Hollyweird without any input from blacks! Singleton penned a moving essay about the current state of affairs in black film, applauding 2013 as a banner year where great films made by black are being recognized ( Fruitvale Station, The Butler, 12 Years A Slave ), he also gives props to 42 which had a black director at the helm but help from Jackie Robinson’s widow Rachel and a black producer but he points out a problematic trend since the success of The Help — black films being made by whites with zero white input. Here are some excerpts via The Hollywood Reporter : What if the commercial success of “black films” like 42 and The Help, which also had a white director, are now making it harder rather than easier for African-American writers and directors to find work? That is exactly what people in certain Hollywood circles are debating. When I brought up the issue with a screenwriter friend, he replied, “It’s simple. Hollywood feels like it doesn’t need us anymore to tell African-American stories.” The thinking goes, “We voted for and gave money to Obama, so [we don’t need to] hire any black people.” I could go on and on about the white directors who got it right and others who missed the mark. But my larger point is that there was a time, albeit very brief, when heroic black figures were the domain of black directors, and when a black director wasn’t hired, the people behind the film at least brought on a black producer for his or her creative input and perspective. Spielberg did that on The Color Purple (Quincy Jones) and Amistad (Debbie Allen). Tarantino had Reggie Hudlin on Django Unchained . But now, that’s changing; several black-themed movies are in development with only white filmmakers attached, including a James Brown biopic. That’s right, the story of “Soul Brother No. 1, Mr. Say It Loud, I’m Black and I’m Proud” is being penned by two Brits for Tate Taylor, director of The Help. A compelling argument can be made that Brian Grazer, the project’s primary producer, has had multiple successes with black talent such as Eddie Murphy and Denzel. And Mick Jagger also is involved, and the Brits tend to have a greater appreciation for African-American creative culture than most white Americans. Still, it gives one pause that someone is making a movie about the icon who laid down the foundation of funk, hip-hop and black economic self-reliance with no African-American involvement behind the scenes. One of Brown’s most famous lines was, “I don’t want nobody to give me nothing; open up the door and I’ll get it myself.” How is that possible when the gatekeepers of this business keep the doors mostly locked shut in Hollywood? In the black film community, the consensus is that we’re entering a new era of “Al Jolson movies.” Jolson, for the uninitiated, was the star of the first “talkie,” The Jazz Singer in 1927, and is best known for donning blackface and singing “Mammy.” He is an apt symbol for what slowly is becoming the norm in Hollywood. Even when there are black directors or writers involved, some of the films made today seem like they’re sifted of soul. It’s as if the studios are saying, “We want it black, just not that black.” Audiences, though, can smell what’s real and what isn’t. And there is a noticeable difference between pictures that have significant contributions from African-Americans behind the scenes and those that don’t. That’s why I can fully relate to the disappointment some friends feel upon hearing about producers holding meetings on black-themed movies without even noticing that no one in the room speaks the language or intimately understands that world. There are cultural nuances and unspoken, but deep-seated emotions that help define the black American experience. The rhythm and cadence in which we carry ourselves among one another is totally alien to most non-blacks, even if it is a constant fascination to them. In many ways, The Help’s $170 million domestic box office set a new paradigm for how Hollywood wants its black pictures: uplifting, sentimental and inoffensive. It’s no one individual filmmaker’s fault. It reflects the latent racism that influences what gets made and what doesn’t in the studio system. What Hollywood execs need to realize is that black-themed stories appeal to the mainstream because they are uniquely American. Our story reminds audiences of struggles and triumphs, dreams and aspirations we all share. And it is only by conveying the particulars of African-American life that our narrative become universal. But making black movies without real participation by black filmmakers is tantamount to cooking a pot of gumbo without the “roux.” And if you don’t know offhand what “roux” is, you shouldn’t be making a black film. Very well done — the whole piece is worth being read in it’s entirety HERE . What do you think? Is it racist for white filmmakers to make black films without black input? Continue reading

Homophobia In Hollyweird: Isaiah Washington Says He Was Blacklisted After Using Gay Slur Against “Grey’s Anatomy” Co-Star

That velvet mafia is something serious hunny! Isaiah Washington is hoping to get a second chance at his acting career after being virtually banned for the past few years since he dropped the F bomb during an onset squabble on “Grey’s Anatomy” and ended up out of a job. Via HuffPo reports : “Grey’s Anatomy” veteran Isaiah Washington said no one in Hollywood “wanted to touch” him after the controversy that ensued when he uttered an anti-gay slur backstage at the 2007 Golden Globe Awards. Currently promoting his new film “Blue Caprice,” the 50-year-old actor told HuffPost Live, “After the incident at the Golden Globes, everything just fell apart. I lost everything. I couldn’t afford to have an agent…I couldn’t afford to have a publicist…I couldn’t afford to continue.” The forced hiatus from acting did have its surprise benefits for Washington, however: “I became a better husband, a better father and a better artist.” Washington made the remarks in light of reports which claimed that he had used the word “fa**ot” in reference to “Grey’s” co-star T.R. Knight during an argument with Patrick Dempsey. As People magazine reported at the time, Knight came out as gay after news of the argument broke, saying, “I hope the fact that I’m gay isn’t the most interesting part of me.” In this day and age it literally PAYS to be tolerant. Glad to see Washington grew and learned from the experience. IMDB

Bossip Exclusive: “LaLa’s Full Court Life” Star Dice Dixon Talks Coming Out, Wearing Dresses, and Honey Nut Cheerios

Everyone’s favorite cousin Candice “Dice” Dixon had a moment to sit down with BOSSIP and chat about juggling life in the spotlight with education, her sexual orientation, dressing “like a woman,” and to dish on the infamous “Honey Nut Cheerios” comment made about her cousin LaLa Anthony earlier this year. BOSSIP: First, let’s talk Full Court Life. People always describe you all as “the positive Black show” on Vh1. Do you see that as a double-edged sword, since people tend to be more entertained by the hot messes? Absolutely. It is great that people see us as a “breath of fresh air” so to speak after watching several of the other shows. A lot of people come up to me and tell me “I watch this show with my kids. I can watch this show with my mother.” So it’s great that our show can reach all age groups since we are so family oriented and not focused on drama. But on the flip side, that [drama] is what people do want to see. They want to see the Love & Hip-Hops and the Basketball Wives and all the fighting. But luckily, we’ve been blessed enough for people to embrace our show and we can continue to be ourselves. What’s more, LaLa told Vh1 from jump that her show was not going to follow the “ratchet reality” trend the network is known so well for. When they approached my cousin she told them, “I’ll never have a show like that, because that’s not my life.” I’m a part of her life, Po is, and you see our dynamic, so her show will never be what the other shows are. And it’s great, because the network is able to give you diversity… My cousin [has creative control], because she’s executive producer. But pretty much, what you see is what you get with our show. We really show who we are. What about you? Do you think LaLa’s show is a much needed break from the all the table-shaking and drink-tossing that takes place on other Vh1 shows? Peep the rest of the interview after the flip.
