At least according to always-reliable celebrity gossip publication Life & Style, which teases her OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT in its latest issue. Funny, we would’ve thought Clarence House might have mentioned this … While we have no doubt Prince George will be a big brother someday, and probably not too long from now, there’s not a shred of evidence to corroborate this. Clearly it’s another shameless attempt to capitalize on speculation about when Prince William will get Kate Middleton pregnant again and sell magazines. Nothing more, nothing less … and nothing new. Michelle Obama Joins Bring Back Our Girls Campaign

Three weeks ago, 257 young girls were kidnapped from their school in eastern Nigeria. Since then, thousands of Twitter followers have joined the campaign to have the girls safely returned to their homes, making the hashtag “BringBackOurGirls a worldwide trending topic. Now the movement has its most powerful follower to date, as  Michelle Obama has joined the fight. The First Lady tweeted the above photo recently, along with the caption, “Our prayers are with the missing Nigerian girls and their families.” Michelle Obama joined Instagram last year and has spoken publicly about the important role played by social media in activist and grass roots political campaigns. Fittingly, Obama’s first post to the popular photo-sharing site was a photo of herself and her daughters joined by a group of young women from a small African school. Other celebrities including Kendall Jenner, Ashton Kutcher and Justin Timberlake have announced their support for #BringBackOurGirls and its parallel movement #RealMenDontBuyGirls. The situation in Nigeria has made global headlines in the weeks since the kidnapping, with the world watching in horror as the girls’ captors publicly announced their intention to sell them into sex slavery. In addition to the Twitter campaign, activists have been organizing worldwide protests in hopes of spurring world leaders to action.

Snooki On "Party Girl" Past: I Was Never an Alcoholic!

Snooki is opening up about how motherhood has changed her “party girl” ways.  The Jersey Shore star sat down on The View this week to chat about how her baby boy Lorenzo gave her a bit of a wake up call. She also set the record straight about her former wild side.  The Dancing With the Stars alum revealed that a month having her first child she went a little too crazy with some of her friends, but fiancé Jionni LaValle was not impressed: “He wanted to break up with me. I was a party girl, I went crazy, I went back to that. It was just a different transition,” she recalled of those wilder times. “I was a party girl, that’s what I did, I loved going out and going crazy and then the first time I went out after I had Lorenzo, I kind of went back to that and then after I’m like, ‘Oh, no. I can’t do this anymore.” But even though Snooks was once a big party fan, it doesn’t mean she was an addict.  “I mean, I never was an alcoholic. I wasn’t really addicted to cigarettes, it wasn’t a problem, so I kind of dropped it like that. Thank god,” she added.  Snooki gave birth to little Lorenzo Dominic LaValle back in August 2012.  Glad to see she’s put those drunk and disorderly days behind her.  Snooki Dances With Plant Snooki Wasted on Jersey Shore!

"Set Yourself Free" Stay in School Ad: The Best (Worst?) PSA of All Time

So, yeah. As public service announcements go, this one definitely takes an unexpected turn about halfway through, and goes where most PSAs do not. Australian ad agency Henry & Aaron created the spot, in which teenagers sneak out of their homes and go AWOL from school, hitting the beach instead. They’re having a freaking blast until things go wrong. Like, horribly wrong. Spoiler alert: Staying in school might have been a better move on this day. Why, specifically? Take a guess, then watch and see if it was anywhere close: Set Yourself Free – Stay in School PSA Certainly a more literal approach to the typical “Stay in School” scare tactics we’re accustomed to seeing, with a bit of dark comedy thrown in there. If the specific takeaway is that you shouldn’t frolic on a beach adjacent to a weapons testing facility while truant from school? Point made and then some. If the broader message is that skipping school is akin to putting your life in danger? Murkier. Tell us, would this have kept you from playing hooky in school? Digital Discrimination: Harvard Study Shows Black Hosts Get Less Gwap Off Airbnb Than Non-Blacks!!!

This is discouraging. A new Harvard study shows there is some discrimination going on in the digital space , specifically on Airbnb, where black hosts have to charge less than non-blacks for comparable rentals. Via Valleywag reports : If you rent a room on Airbnb, odds are you know what your host looks like—their picture is featured front and center. A new report out of Harvard Business School crunched the data, and says this is totally fine, as long as you’re not black. The study, titled “Digital Discrimination: The Case of Airbnb.com ,” puts forth a pretty bleak premise. If you take two rental spaces, of the same general quality and in the same general area, the one owned by a non-black host will cost 12 percent more, on average: We find that non-black hosts are able to charge approximately 12% more than black hosts, holding location, rental characteristics, and quality constant. Moreover, black hosts receive a larger price penalty for having a poor location score relative to non-black hosts. These differences highlight the risk of discrimination in online marketplaces, suggesting an important unintended consequence of a seemingly-routine mechanism for building trust. It’s hard to pin down exactly, but the educated presumption is that black Airbnb hosts have to lower their prices in order to compete with non-black Airbnb users, simply because Airbnb users would prefer to not rent from a black host. The study doubts Airbnb is subject to any illegal discrimination liability, because otherwise it wouldn’t show all those black and white faces so prominently. In a statement to Recode , Airbnb, of course, dismisses the study: “ We are committed to making Airbnb the most open, trusted, diverse, transparent community in the world and our Terms of Service prohibit content that discriminates. The data in this report is nearly two years old and is from only one of the more than 35,000 cities where Airbnb hosts welcome guests into their homes. Additionally, the authors made a number of subjective or inaccurate determinations when compiling their findings.” Of course, this wouldn’t be a case of Airbnb employing discriminatory policies, or encouraging discrimination—at worst, they’re just facilitating it as a middleman. But it’s a reminder that the “sharing economy” isn’t a fist-bump feel-good utopia, as advertised—we share all our dirty prejudices, too. Guess there really is racism everywhere. Fair Or Too Far? Woman Sues Home Developer For Purposely Neglecting To Warn Her Of Shady Racist Neighbor Before Move In

Woman Sues Developer For Failing To Inform Her Of Racist Neighbor A New Jersey woman was who was livid after learning that she’d purchased a home next to an openly racist man is now suing the home developer for failing to warn her. via News One Cyndee Phoenix (pictured) thought she had found the perfect home in a Hamilton County, N. J., residential community to live in with her elderly parents and sister. But what Phoenix did not know and now claims was not revealed to her by the developer, Lennar Homes Corp, who promoted promises of a “wonderful lifestyle,” was that she and her family would be tormented by a neighbor who would threaten, intimidate and make racist remarks. She is suing the developer for “knowingly concealing” that her future neighbor was a “dangerous individual,” according to Courthouse News. Phoenix closed on her home last October and moved in a month later. Lennar Homes reportedly warned the neighbor in question, Kevin Elville Potter, about his alleged harassing behavior, requesting that he cease his hostile conduct. According to documents filed in Atlantic County Court, Potter began his harassing ways soon after Phoenix moved in. Potter allegedly made “death threats to plaintiff’s sister, spit in the direction of Phoenix’s family members, made snide and racist comments about plaintiff, has taken pictures of plaintiff’s guests and stared them down in attempts to intimidate them and continued blocking plaintiff’s driveway with his parked cars.” The complaint also describes how Phoenix is so “afraid to leave her home” and “is constantly living in fear” that she was forced to hire a security guard because the family was also allegedly stalked by Potter. Phoenix claims that her security guard was even harassed by Potter, who once reportedly followed the employee for 15 miles on the freeway. There’s no arguing that this man’s actions are blatantly prejudice and uncalled for from the sounds of things but, it’ll be hard to prove that the home developer had knowledge of his racist ways before hand. Kid Writes Get-Well Note to Teacher, Offers Helpful Health Advice

It’s officially cold/flu season, and if you’re feeling a bit under the weather like this kid’s teacher, prepare to be enlightened by the get well note he authored. In addition to being a nice gesture, wishing his instructor a speedy recovery, the note offers some simple, yet profound advice to cute what ails you: Drop trou. Surely the source of her illness, whatever it may be, can be cured by the scientific fact that pooping makes you feel better. It’s just common knowledge. Nothing a little bowel movement can’t fix, right? In case that wasn’t specific enough, though, he went into great detail, sharing his wisdom with gusto! Hey, it works every morning. Not even kidding. There’s even a helpful infographic in case the words alone don’t get this all-important message across. If the teacher doesn’t have this framed and displayed in the elementary school bathroom as inspiration to all students who pass through those doors? This isn’t a planet we want to be living on.

Typhoon Haiyan Slams Central Philippines, Four Reported Dead

The most powerful typhoon of 2013 made landfall early today in central Philippines, resulting in a myriad of landslides, knocking out power and, as of this writing, killing at least four people. Typhoon Haiyan started east in Samar and made its way west toward Panay around 4 a.m. EST. Super Typhoon Blasts the Philippines Over 720,000 people have evacuated their homes in the wake of 125 mile-per-hour winds, with updates coming slowly due to a lack of power in the area. But we know that at least one individual died via fallen tree, one was struck by lightning and two have been electrocuted as a result of the storm. Southern Leyte Gov. Roger Mercado told reporters that the storm triggered landslides which have blocked roads, uprooted trees and torn roofs off homes in the region. “When you’re faced with such a scenario, you can only pray, and pray and pray,” Mercado told The Associated Press by telephone amid the crisis. “My worst fear is there will be massive loss of lives and property.” A typhoon of similar strength hit the Philippines in 1990 and killed 508 people overall. But authorities hope that early warnings and evacuations will result in far fewer casualties this time around. We hope the same and we send our thoughts to everyone affected by the storm.

Isht is real out here. Former Marketing Executive Reduced To Flipping Burgers It’s crazy that he was a former marketing executive who probably had a business degree and couldn’t manage his own money. According to Mail Online A retired businessman who once enjoyed all the perks that came with his six figure salary job is being forced to make ends meet in his retirement by working two lowly paid part-time jobs. Former high flying marketing executive Tom Palome, 77, now fills his days making $10 an hour to demonstrate food at Sam’s Club and $8 an hour flipping burgers and serving drinks at a golf club in Tampa, Florida. ‘I earn in a week what I used to earn in an hour,’ Palome, who used to fly first class on business trips to Europe, told Bloomberg. While Palome worked hard his entire career, paid off his mortgage and put his kids through college, like most Americans he didn’t save enough for retirement. In addition, his savings more than halved to $40,000 after the financial crisis struck in 2008. In need of cash to maintain his lifestyle and with years if not decades of life ahead of him, Palome took the first job he could find – not easy to find for someone at his stage in life. Palome’s reduced circumstances are part of a much the larger trend in America in which workers from all wage brackets are being forced to stay on in the workforce as they both live longer and have fewer retirement savings to rely on. Damn. Rather than focus about what he used to have, Palome prefers to be optimistic about his situation. He is in good health, lives independently and he in gainful employment. ‘I tell people I demonstrate food and I do short-order cooking. I don’t mind saying it. What’s important is that I can work today,’ he told Bloomberg. Palome receives $1,200 from Social Security and a $600 a month pension from his last corporate job. Still, his $1,400 in monthly wages allows him to bolster his savings and provides for some extras. He goes to the theater, pays for plane tickets to visit his children and grandsons and takes occasional vacations. ‘I know seniors like me who hardly ever leave their homes because they don’t have money to do anything,’ Palome said. ‘They could work, but won’t take a lesser job.’ Two years ago, Palome saw an advertisement in a local paper for the AARP Senior Community Service Employment Program. He met with Maxine Haynes, the program’s Tampa project director, who helped him get an interview at Advantage Sales & Marketing LLC, which runs food demonstrations for Sam’s Club and other stores. To stretch his income, Palome runs his dishwasher once a week and turns off his hot water heater every morning after he showers. He buys airline tickets six months in advance, booking rental cars for as little as $13.80 a day. If Palome has one regret, it’s that he didn’t get better retirement investing advice somewhere along the line. “I thought I could do it on my own,’ he said. At least he can smile about it. Bethenny Frankel to Embark on "Calling All My Girls" Tour

She’s not a musician or an author, but Bethenny Frankel will soon embark on a nationwide tour. The former Real Housewives of New York City cast member and Skinnygirl mogul has announced plans to promote her talk show via a visit of cities such as Houston, Los Angeles, Tampa Bay and New York. It will kick off on July 29 and you can learn more details at the official ” Calling All My Girls ” website. Really. That’s what she is calling the tour. Each stop will welcome around 150 attendees and feature cocktails, games and meets/greets where Frankel can share details with fans about the September 9 debut of her talk show. She’ll probably refer to Jason Hoppy as trash a few times as well.
