April 16 is the National Day of Silence, sponsored by a gay activist group, for American students. This day brings attention to all anti-LGBT (lesbian-gay-bisexual-transvestite)name-calling, bullying and harassment in schools. Each year the event has grown, and now hundreds of thousands of students participate to encourage schools and classmates to address the problem of anti-LGBT behavior. Founded in 1996, the Day of Silence has become the largest single student-led action towards creating safer schools for all, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression. The day is marks a silent protest against the harassment of gay and lesbian students. Christian groups claim that the holiday promotes gay rights and the acknowledgment of those rights. The Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network has been marketing their event to schools around the nation. The event calls for students to not speak throughout the school day in hopes that the silent protest will raise awareness about harassment and bullying of homosexual students in public schools.
