The birds of paradise enjoyed a view from the top as Rio debuted Friday night at number one, leaving the teens of Scream 4 in second place. Elsewhere in the top five, the pattern repeated, with horror movie Insidious staying strong in third place and the chatty animated animals of Hop in fourth. Your Friday box office is here.
Despite the star pedigree of Jake Gyllenhaal and the geek cred of director Duncan Jones, sci-fi thriller Source Code was topped by an animated bunny learning the new true meaning of Christmas Easter. At third place was the haunted house scare-em-up Insidious , possibly launching another profitable franchise for the brains behind Saw . Plus, the hotly debated Sucker Punch fell an astronomical 68.1% from last week — if those number hold, it means it held up slightly better in its second weekend than Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li (-68.5%) but not as well as Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (-67.9%). Your weekend receipts are here.
Come recess today, all the kids will be buzzing about how they went to the movies this weekend and became completely enamored with that underdog story of an unlikely royal heir overcoming the odds, even when war reared its ugly head. Yep, Hop totally killed it at the box-office this weekend. But it was also the opening weekend for ” the family event of the year !” So, how did the brand new, PG-13 version of The King’s Speech fare?
