Michael Steele Spent RNC Money on Bottle Service at a Bondage Club (Updated) [What Up]

Michael Steele is just wasting RNC money on limos and private planes and, yes, private bondage-themed nightclubs with topless ladies. Update: A Republican consultant charged the trip to the RNC, and the party says Chairman Mike was not actually there. Tucker Carlson’s The Daily Carlsoning has a wonderful story about how Michael Steele considered buying a private plane, because he spends so much time flying to nightclubs and Hawaii, but he decided not to. Instead he found many other creative ways to waste money. Once on the ground, FEC filings suggest, Steele travels in style. A February RNC trip to California, for example, included a $9,099 stop at the Beverly Hills Hotel, $6,596 dropped at the nearby Four Seasons, and $1,620.71 spent [update: the amount is actually $1,946.25] at Voyeur West Hollywood , a bondage-themed nightclub featuring topless women dancers imitating lesbian sex. Now, Voyeur is not really a “strip club” so much as a terrible-sounding nightclub with bottle service, long lines, Lindsay Lohan, and, yes, half-naked ladies simulating oral sex on each other. Which, to be honest, sounds way stupider than a proper, respectable strip club. Shame on you, Michael Steele, for encouraging this kind of thing. The GOP really has to get around to firing the embarrassing and inept Michael Steele eventually. Steele spent $1.4 million on the GOP’s terrible new website, he charges $15,000 for speaking appearances , and his RNC continues to spend more than it takes in as we begin the campaign season in earnest. But it would still present a bit of an image problem to fire the one prominent black Republican in America. Update: In a statement, the RNC says Chairman Steele was not present for the Voyeur nightclub trip. That two grand was, apparently, “a reimbursement made to a non-committee staffer.” And the disbursement appears to have covered the check of a Mr. Erik Brown of Orange, California. Brown is a longtime Republican donor and the owner of a direct marketing firm that recently did work for a Republican gubernatorial candidate in California. We emailed Brown to ask if Steele was actually there that night, and we’ll let you know if we hear back from him. ( As Alex Pappas at The Daily Tucker reports, Brown has Tweeted about hanging out with Steele fairly recently. But now Erik has deleted his whole Twitter.)

Lady Gaga Brought To Tears By Fans’ Birthday Video

‘I’ve never cried so hard in 24 years, from pure joy and unconditional love,’ Gaga tweets. By James Montgomery Lady Gaga Photo: Jun Sato/ WireImage When MTV News spoke to director Ryan James Yezak earlier this month, he told us all about the making of his totally excellent “Telephone” tribute vid and then, in passing, mentioned that he was also working on a special birthday present for his muse, Lady Gaga . Yezak was asking for “Happy Birthday” messages from his fellow Gaga enthusiasts, which he hoped to edit together into one singing, strutting birthday card for Lady G. At the time, it seemed like a pretty nice — if not slightly fanatical — gesture, but that was about it. Only on Sunday — her actual birthday — Gaga watched the video then tweeted about it , writing, “I’ve never cried so hard in 24 years, from pure joy and unconditional love. Tears still streaming.” And suddenly, Yezak’s birthday video became a very big thing. Which is good, because he clearly spent an inordinate amount of time working on it. He received submissions from nearly 150 of Gaga’s biggest fans from all around the world (England, Malaysia, Germany, Brazil, Spain and Italy, to name just a few), then edited them together into one epic, nine-plus-minute message, filled with a whole lot of tears, some outrageous costumes and genuinely touching messages too. In the clip, Gaga fans thank her for inspiring them, for giving them courage to be themselves and, in the case of one fan, giving him the strength to come out of the closet. There is also plenty of singing and dancing, a whole lot of makeup and even a few special birthday wishes. It’s a pretty touching thing and it’s no wonder Gaga was moved when she saw it. And as for Yezak, well, he still can’t believe that Gaga saw the video, writing in an e-mail to MTV News that the whole experience has been “pretty amazing,” and writing on his Twitter account that “anything is possible.” Related Artists Lady Gaga

Green Day Say New Album Is ‘Back To The Basics’

‘We’ve got to start translating the songs and explaining the songs,’ Billie Joe Armstrong tells MTV News. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Sway Calloway Green Day Photo: MTV News In the new issue of Kerrang! magazine, Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong got fans salivating when he let it slip that the band was already working on songs for the follow-up to 2009’s 21st Century Breakdown. “We did some demos in Berlin, some in Stockholm, some just outside of Glasgow and some in Amsterdam,” Armstrong told the magazine. “We wanted to get [the songs] down in some early form.” From the sound of things, GD were looking to get something out sooner rather than later, a far cry from the two-plus years they spent working on Breakdown. And, naturally, we were excited by the news. So when we spoke to the guys at the Broadway premiere of their “American Idiot” musical , we asked them about the status of the new album — which, as they put it, is shaping up to be a “back-to-basics” sort of affair. “It’s just been songwriting right now. Instead of doing it later on, we decided to start doing stuff now. … It’s all back to the basics again. Just getting in a room together and start jamming,” Armstrong said. “We set up all of our old gear, which was like an experiment. We set up all of our equipment from 1992, and we sat in a room. We got in, and I was like, ‘Come on, guys, we’re getting back in!’ and I [start playing] and go, ‘This sounds like sh–!’ Everything sounded so bad.” “Me and [drummer] Tre [Cool] were looking at Billie going, ‘Really, you’ve got to pull out that POS amp?’ ” bassist Mike Dirnt laughed. “I mean, it really sounded like crap.” So maybe the new Green Day album won’t be a return to their punk past. Or perhaps it will. As Armstrong pointed out, the finished album is still a ways off, and it’s too early to see how it’s going to turn out. “It’s still really early,” he laughed. “We’ve got to start translating the songs and explaining the songs, and the next step will be arguing about the songs.” Are you excited for new music from Green Day? Paramore’s Hayley Williams Sings Lady Gaga’s ‘Bad Romance’ On Twitter

‘Most fun I’ve ever had in ever,’ she tweets about performing the cover. By Kyle Anderson Haley Williams Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ FilmMagic Paramore singer Hayley Williams has one of the most entertaining Twitter feeds of any musician on the Internet. She regularly tweets her reviews of movies she has seen (she recently saw and loved “Hot Tub Time Machine”), rants about UFC events and exchanges inside jokes with her own band members, Nashville friends and boyfriend Chad Gilbert of New Found Glory. Though she drops the occasional Twitpic, her Twitter has been mostly a word-based experience. Until now. Over the weekend, Williams posted a video to her Twitter feed . “Feel a bit crazy posting this … but you asked for it!” the 21-year-old frontwoman wrote. “My apologies to Miss Gaga. Love, your friend, Lady Haha.” The link revealed a video of Williams sitting at a piano, adusting her hair and then singing and playing Gaga’s “Bad Romance.” Williams gave Gaga’s hit a nice little remix, making the solo piano version into a cabaret shuffle. She seemed to take extra pleasure in the “Ooh la la” portions of the tune, rolling the R’s and belting out the notes. The video came as a result of a tweet she sent only a few hours before . “Playing ‘Bad Romance’ on the piano and pretending to be Lady Gaga,” she wrote. “Why haven’t I ever done this before? Most fun I’ve ever had in ever.” Williams is just the latest star from the rock world to take on a Lady Gaga song . She joins the ranks of Chris Daughtry, Weezer, Maximo Park, We the Kings and, of course, Eric Cartman of “South Park” fame. Could “Bad Romance” sneak into Paramore sets in the future? We’ll find out when the group kicks off the latest stretch of tour dates on April 26 in Knoxville, Tennessee. What Lady Gaga song would you like to see Paramore cover? Let us know in the comments! MTV’s Musical March Madness: We Reach The Sweet 16 — Vote Now!

Tokio Hotel, 30 Seconds to Mars and more march on in MTV News’ Band Bracketology By James Montgomery 30 Seconds to Mars are poised for domination Photo: Nigel Crane/ Redferns We started MTV News’ Musical March Madness with 64 bands (well, 65 if you count Against Me!), whittled it down to 32 last week, and now, after hundreds of thousands of votes — and nearly as many ticked-off fans — we’ve reached the Sweet 16. Much like the real NCAA tourney, we had upsets, buzzer beaters and even an overtime tilt or two. After some heated, back-and-forth battles, we had heavyweights going down and Cinderella bands dancing on. One of these remaining bands will be crowned champion — and, once again, it’ll be up to you to determine who makes it to the Elite Eight. You can view the updated Band Bracket here , and Sweet 16 voting is now open on the Newsroom blog . Polls will close Tuesday night, so you’d better get cracking. And now, on to the recaps. All results are based on percentage of votes, in case you were wondering. Midwest The region where dreams go to die. Both #11 Shinedown and #10 Breaking Benjamin rolled into the field of 32 with momentum on their sides, and both jumped out to commanding leads over their respective opponents (#14 AFI and #2 Muse) but, in the end, neither band was able to hold on, and both were sent packing. The White Stripes dispensed of pesky 12th-seeded OK Go with relative ease, and, in the bracket’s best matchup, 9th-seeded Patrick Stump needed overtime to best the upset-minded Hold Steady, who led early but wilted under Stump’s full-court pressure. The results: (9) Patrick Stump def. (16) the Hold Steady (OT, Stump won on total votes) (4) The White Stripes def. (12) OK Go, 60-40 (14) AFI def. (11) Shinedown, 61-39 (2) Muse def. (10) Breaking Benjamin, 53-47 The Midwest’s Sweet 16 matchups are #9 Patrick Stump vs. #4 the White Stripes, and #2 Muse vs. #14 AFI. West Things continued to be wild out West, with #9 30 Seconds to Mars and #1 Blink-182 going head-to-head in a battle for the ages. Both bands led for extended periods of time, but in the end (thanks to some rather fervent Twitter campaigning by guitarist Tomo Milicevic), the guys in 30 STM pulled off the upset. Fifth-seeded My Chemical Romance rolled #4 Pearl Jam, #15 Panic! at the Disco blasted #7 Death Cab for Cutie, and #14 the Young Veins mounted a furious comeback to nip #6 Weezer. The results: (9) 30 Seconds To Mars def. (1) Blink-182, 69-31 (5) My Chemical Romance def. (4) Pearl Jam, 63-37 (14) The Young Veins def. (6) Weezer, 53-47 (15) Panic! at the Disco def. (7) Death Cab For Cutie, 72-28 Which means that, in the West, we’ve got a pair of totally epic matchups in the Sweet 16: #5 My Chemical Romance vs. #9 30 Seconds to Mars, and — in a battle that pits former bandmates against one another — #14 the Young Veins vs. #15 Panic! at the Disco. East Tokio Hotel march on! Originally only making the field of 64 as an afterthought, they knocked off #1 Coldplay in the first round of the tourney, then took it to #8 Radiohead in the second round. At this point, they’ve got to be the presumptive favorites to come out of the region. In other action, #4 Vampire Weekend outlasted #5 Phoenix in a battle of blog favorites, #3 Owl City nipped #6 Grizzly Bear, and #7 MGMT knocked off #2 Animal Collective. The results: (16) Tokio Hotel def. (8) Radiohead, 69-31 (4) Vampire Weekend def. (5) Phoenix, 55-45 (3) Owl City def. (6) Grizzly Bear, 51-49 (7) MGMT def. (2) Animal Collective, 63-37 So in the East, we’re left with a rather improbable pair of Sweet 16 matchups: #16 Tokio Hotel vs. #4 Vampire Weekend, and #3 Owl City vs. #7 MGMT. Someone’s got to win, right? South The region that refuses to be figured out. One week after they shocked the world by upsetting #1 Kings of Leon, 16th-seeded Creed got knocked off by Adam Lambert in rather convincing fashion. 13th-seeded Alice in Chains kept their impossible dream alive by outgunning #12 Nick Jonas (and his Administration), #6 Phish rolled past #3 the Dave Matthews Band and #15 Coheed and Cambria — the band nobody wants to face at this point — knocked off #10 Mastodon. The results: (9) Adam Lambert def. (16) Creed, 65-35 (13) Alice in Chains def. (12) Nick Jonas, 56-44 (6) Phish def. (3) Dave Matthews Band, 69-31 (15) Coheed and Cambria def. (10) Mastodon, 68-32 The Sweet 16 matchups in the South should be epic: #9 Adam Lambert vs. #13 Alice in Chains, #6 Phish vs. #15 Coheed and Cambria. MTV News’ Musical March Madness Sweet 16 voting is open now on the Newsroom blog and will run until Tuesday night. Hit the polls, and perhaps you can help your favorite band win a largely arbitrary and non-existent championship! Related Artists 30 Seconds To Mars

Cube Guys Hype Up WMC 2010 Crowd With ‘Scarface’ Sample, Coolio Remix

Their song ‘Scarcube,’ which samples Al Pacino lines from the movie, is a contender for this year’s WMC anthem. By Adam Stewart The Cube Guys Photo: MTV News The Cube Guys embrace an unmistakable sound that incorporates an eclectic blend of tribal house, electro house, fidget house and many other subgrenes that has consistently kept fans on their toes. The Italian duo first broke into the electronic-music scene back at the Winter Music Conference in 2005 with their club smash “Electro” and have been going strong ever since. WMC has been a perennial playground for the pair, who spent some time with MTV News after their set this year at Gansevoort Beach at the Stereo Recordings Playa party along with Chus and Ceballos . The Cube Guys, made up of Roberto Biffi and Luca Provera, dropped a monster anthem to start their set in front of an enthusiastic, bikini-clad crowd. The song, called “Scarcube,” is a strong contender for the WMC track of 2010 . The deeply sinister electro house track samples iconic Al Pacino lines from the film “Scarface.” “That’s a new track from us. It’s crazy, because we cut up all the Pacino voices, and we then built all of the tracks on top of it,” Provera recalled. “Everywhere we spin it, the people go crazy. They ask, ‘What is that? What is that? When is it coming out?’ We’re so surprised about it, but we love it, and we hope that it will have a good future. ‘Scarface’ is the Miami movie, so why not?” The fans packed 20 deep in front of the stage and fully embraced what is sure to become a Miami anthem. They then seamlessly segued into another new release, a huge remix of Coolio’s “Fantastic Voyage,” giving new life to the song that went double-platinum back in 1994 by putting their signature spin on the classic vocal and incorporating electronic horns and a driving beat. “We officially landed the remix of Coolio with Universal Records, so we’re really happy about it!” Provera said. Russell Brand makes a statement

Its been a hot minute since I’ve featured one of my original loves Russell Brand. The British comedian was photographed departing from a yoga class in Los Angeles, California on March 24th. If you read his shirt you will read ol’Russ is trying to make a pretty big statement. The bold print on his gray t-shirt says, “Legalize Gay, Repeal Proposition 8 Now,” showing his clear opposition of the controversial Proposition 8 which grants same sex couples the constitutional right to marry. A new report has emerged from The Daily Mail claiming Brand and his fiance Katy Perry have split up. The report sources a friend of Brand’s claiming he is becoming tired of being tied down. A source said: ‘Russell adores Katy, but he’s not sure he’s capable of being tied down. ‘Everyone who knows him isn’t really that surprised. He has a habit of declaring that a girl is “The One” during the first weeks of dating, but it’s just that it’s never been this high profile before. ‘It seems he’s finding this relationship overwhelming.’ Could Russell and Katy’s relationship be going from Hot to Cold?
