Machine Gun Kelly Is Hottest Breakthrough MC Of 2011!

The people have spoken, and MGK has beat out Lil Twist and Mac Miller in MTV News’ annual poll. By Rob Markman Machine Gun Kelly Photo: Getty Images/ MTV News Hate it or love it, the underdog is on top! Since he first began to make noise with his 2010 mixtape Lace Up, Machine Gun Kelly has worked his way into hip-hop’s collective consciousness. It wasn’t always pretty (see MGK’s August flash-mob arrest or his tiff with Yelawolf ), but it’s always been passionate. Now, thanks to that passion, Machine Gun Kelly can stand alone as MTV News’ Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2011, it was revealed on “RapFix Live.” The competition was tough, and ever since the fan-driven Hottest Breakthrough poll opened on the RapFix blog last week, Kells was jockeying for the #1 position, fighting off Lil Twist and Mac Miller. A$AP Rocky, Future, French Montana, Freddie Gibbs, Kendrick Lamar, Meek Mill and Roscoe Dash were also in contention, but in the end, it was MGK who held the crown after hundreds of thousands of votes were tallied. When all the math was complete, MGK finished with 44 percent of the vote. Miller, whose Blue Slide Park debuted at #1 last month, was an early favorite. Twist, who finished in the #2 spot with 39 percent of the vote, proved to be MGK’s most formidable competition, thanks to his die-hard fans, Young Money team and best friend Justin Bieber, who all tweeted in support. In August, MGK appeared on “RapFix Live” and announced that he had signed with Diddy’s storied Bad Boy label, but rather than try to force him into the marketplace before his time, it was decided that the record company would continue to grow Kells organically. One of the things that first impressed Puff was Kelly’s dedicated fanbase, the same one that voted him the Hottest Breakthrough MC. “He has just such a movement, just hundreds and thousands of loyal fans that came from the place he came from in different parts of the country,” Diddy gushed during that “RapFix Live” appearance. “He wasn’t always the coolest kid in school, and just the process of growing up and the problems that they all encounter, they relate to him in such a way.” Influenced by DMX, Cleveland’s Machine Gun Kelly began battle-rapping around 2004 while he was still in high school. His passion grew from the corner ciphers to the studio, where he would lay tracks for his 2006 mixtape, Stamp of Approval. Back then, the MC (who got the Machine Gun part of his moniker because of his rapid-fire raps) was just getting his feet wet. In 2010, MGK would drop two mixtapes, 100 Words and Runnin’ and, his most notable tape, Lace Up. From there, the energetic spitter would develop his following thanks to his spirited live performances. From the very beginning of the competition, MGK had his eyes set on the #1 spot. “To be considered for the Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2011, it’s obviously an honor, but I want to be the hottest. I’ve never been comfortable with sharing anything: I was a single child,” Machine Gun Kelly said on “RapFix Live.” Congratulations, MGK! Roscoe Dash Brings The ‘Awesome’ To Hottest Breakthrough Race

Atlanta MC builds on ‘All the Way Turnt Up’ momentum to land a spot on our list — vote now! By Steven Roberts Roscoe Dash Photo: Getty Images/ MTV News It’s hard to believe Roscoe Dash has yet to put out an album. “All the Way Turnt Up” was such a big record last year that hip-hop fans didn’t even think it was his. With Dash being a relative unknown — even within Atlanta’s unique hip-hop scene — people thought the record was by 2010 Hottest Breakthrough MC nominees Travis Porter . But once that was cleared up, everyone from Lil Wayne to Lupe Fiasco was ready to spit over the beat. Dash’s next single, “Show Out,” was a solid effort, but it wasn’t nearly as successful as “Turnt Up.” It looked like Dash might’ve succumbed to one-hit wonder status. But then Roscoe turned up (get it?) on one of 2010’s most overlooked songs, Waka Flocka Flame’s “No Hands.” The song cemented Flocka as a viable mainstream artist, lent Wale a much-needed lifeline and established a market for Mr. R-O-S-C-O-E as a hook man — and helped land him on MTV News’ 2011 Hottest Breakthrough MCs list. Dash’s raspy drawl would appear on DJ Drama’s “Oh My” with Fabulous and Wiz Khalifa and Big Sean’s “Marvin and Chardonnay” with Kanye West. These songs have helped bring about a second wave of interest in Dash. He recently dropped the videos for “Awesome” and “Good, Good Night.” Both songs are featured on his EP, J.U.I.C.E (Just Understand I Control Everything), which is set to drop later on this month. “Music is something I just never stopped doing, especially in high school,” Dash told MTV News. “I remember staying up burning CDs one by one every night until I had, like, 300 CDs, stuffing them in a backpack and going to school the next day, passing them out. “The biggest lesson that I’ve learned coming up is that your fans are going to be the most important people that you come in contact with,” he added. “They’re going to life you up whenever you don’t have the hottest song. They’re just going to rock with you for you.” Hottest Breakthrough MCs was established by MTV News in 2010 as a fan-driven initiative that spotlights, celebrates and cultivates new talent. MTV News chose a pool of young rappers and urged fans to vote for their favorite. When it was all said and done, Wiz Khalifa emerged as the Hottest Breakthrough of last year. The competition was tough, but the Taylor Gang General beat out runner-up Nicki Minaj, ATL group Travis Porter, Diggy Simmons and J. Cole. This year, you can vote for Roscoe (or your favorite up-and-comer) over at RapFix.MTV.com , and be sure to check back for daily updates and poll results. Each day, we’ll spotlight a new Hottest Breakthrough MC before we conclude Tuesday (December 13) when the polls close at 11:59 p.m. ET. The 2011 Hottest Breakthrough MC will be revealed during Wednesday’s “RapFix Live,” during which the winner will appear as our in-studio guest. There will also be a special announcement about MTV News’ upcoming Hottest MCs in the Game list and debate. To be considered a Hottest Breakthrough MC, an artist cannot have released a major-label full-length album. Finalists from 2010’s Hottest Breakthrough MCs poll will not be eligible for 2011 consideration, so unfortunately, Diggy Simmons and Travis Porter won’t be part of this conversation. Mac Miller Is Wiz Khalifa’s Hottest Breakthrough MC

‘Mac gotta win that for sure,’ Wiz tells ‘RapFix Live’ of fellow Pittsburgh rapper. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Wiz Khalifa Photo: Al Pereira/ WireImage Wiz Khalifa knows a thing or two about breaking through to the mainstream. In 2010, the Taylor Gang general was voted by fans as MTV News’ Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010. He beat out J. Cole and Nicki Minaj and went on to release his debut album, Rolling Papers, then had rap fans across the word singing his hits “Black and Yellow” and “On My Level.” When it comes to the 2011 Hottest Breakthrough MC competition, Wiz is in support of all 10 of the nominees, but he does have his favorite. In a pool that includes A$AP Rocky, Future, Freddie Gibbs, French Montana, Kendrick Lamar , Machine Gun Kelly , Meek Mill , Lil Twist and Roscoe Dash, Khalifa is picking his Rostrum Records labelmate and fellow Pittsburgh MC to take it all: Mac Miller . “Those are all great names, and I’ve met all of those kids — well, some of them aren’t kids,” Wiz told “RapFix Live” on Wednesday. “But I gotta go with the hometown, Mac.” Mac Miller, like Khalifa , hails from Pittsburgh. He made a name for himself with his 2010 mixtape K.I.D.S. and its 2011 follow-up, Best Day Ever. In 2011, Mac toured the country, sold out shows and saw his “Donald Trump” single chart on the Billboard Hot 100. Miller pulled off his biggest feat, however, when his independent debut, Blue Slide Park, became the #1 album in the country. “Mac gotta win that for sure, ’cause he did the numbers, he did the tour, he got the fans, he’s got the merch,” Khalifa said. “All those guys that you named definitely had successful and fun years, but I gotta go with my hometown, Malcolm.” Each day, we’ll spotlight a new Hottest Breakthrough MC before concluding Tuesday when the polls close at 11:59 p.m. ET. Jennifer Aniston Named Hottest Woman in History of the World

Some might say she isn’t even the hottest woman to have shared a bed with Brad Pitt, but Men’s Health readers disagree: According to a new poll from that magazine, Jennifer Aniston is the Hottest Woman of All-Time. A questionable choice? Maybe? But have you seen the following photo?1? “Funny is sexy, and Jennifer Aniston is funny,” the publication explains . “Her down-to-earth persona makes her seem attainable… And her all-too-human love life off screen inspires sympathy that not even a string of bland romantic comedies can diminish. Other sex symbols drift toward one-dimensionality, becoming flat icons in the process, but throughout her career Aniston has remained sexy, funny, and unmistakably real.” Rounding out the poll’s top five: Raquel Welch, Marilyn Monroe, Britney Spears and Madonna. Angelina Jolie came in at number-10. Ogle our Jennifer Aniston photo gallery and decide: Is this the hottet woman of all-time?

French Montana Vies For Spotlight With Hottest Breakthrough MC Nod

Courted by the likes of Kanye West, Rick Ross and Jay-Z before joining Diddy, Montana earns a spot on MTV News’ 2011 list — vote now! By Steven Roberts French Montana Photo: Getty Images/ MTV News From the very moment the horns from the Lords of the Underground’s 1993 classic “Funky Child” sound until the moment that “Shorty got potential, I could be her sponsor” is heard, it was evident that French Montana had a hit on his hands with “Shot Caller.” Montana’s rise to prominence wasn’t that instantaneous, however. French Montana has been making noise on New York City’s underground rap scene since the early 2000s with his “Cocaine City” DVD series. Montana hoped the street series — showcasing interviews with big-name artists like T.I. and then unknowns like Nicki Minaj and Waka Flocka — would help broaden his fanbase in the same way other up-and-comers hoped their mixtapes did. He started gaining a lot of momentum later on in the decade, especially when he and Max B teamed up to drop the Coke Wave mixtape series. That momentum slowed when the Biggaveli was incarcerated, but Montana never stopped working. Fast-forward a couple of years and he found himself in the middle of speculation concerning whether he would sign with Kanye West, Diddy, Rick Ross or Jay-Z — two of the Bronx MC’s suitors, Rick Ross and Diddy, even hopped on the remix of “Shot Caller.” Wherever Montana landed, it was clear he wanted to be the main attraction. “I rather be LeBron in Cleveland than LeBron in Heat, so you read between the lines,” French said. “Wherever I go, I’d rather be the star than have to sit there. I worked this hard to get here so when I step in, I have to be the main focus.” On Thursday, French ended the speculation when he hit BET’s “106 & Park,” making a splashy appearance with his new label boss: Diddy. With rappers assembling crews like a game of dodgeball during PE, Montana promises to be a star as he puts his John Hancock — insert obligatory “pause” — on a Bad Boy contract. And with the already streets flooded with mixtape material and a joint LP with Waka on the way, there’s no question that the work ethic is there. Freddie Gibbs Is Tough Candidate For Hottest Breakthrough MC

Gangsta Gibbs’ mixtapes earned him a deal with Young Jeezy and a spot on MTV News’ 2011 Hottest Breakthrough list — vote now! By Nadeska Alexis Freddie Gibbs Photo: Getty Images/ MTV News When Freddie Gibbs joined Sway on “RapFix Live” in September, the Gary, Indiana, native was firm in insisting that he would never stray from the deeply lyrical gangster rap that fans now expect from him. His recent deal with Young Jeezy ‘s CTE label bolstered his efforts and kept the spotlight on his releases this year, earning him a nomination for MTV News’ Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2011 . Despite a fizzled deal with Interscope Records in 2007, Gibbs (born Frederick Tipton) continued his rise to lyrical prominence by dropping popular mixtapes, including 2009’s The Miseducation of Freddie Gibbs and Midwestgangstaboxframecadillacmuzik . The success of those two mixtapes landed him a spot on XXL ‘s 2010 Freshman cover, but that was only the beginning for Gangsta Gibbs. The 29-year-old rapper continued his manic music run, releasing the independent EP Str8 Killa No Filla via Decon Records in 2010, and in April he made his biggest career move thus far, inking a new deal with Young Jeezy’s CTE (Corporate Thugz Entertainment). Besides teaming up with the Snowman on singles like “Run DMC” and “Do It for You,” Gibbs put in some extra time in the lab, turning out his mixtape Cold Day in Hell in October. The project showcased his growth, with standout cuts including “Anything to Survive” and “Menace II Society” and a slew of guest features from Freeway, Jeezy, Juicy J and 2 Chainz. Major label or not, don’t expect Gibbs to soften the content of his material anytime soon. “I wanna be taboo. I want your parents to not want my music in your iPod,” Gibbs told MTV News. “I want your mom to be scared of what I’m talking about because it’s so real.” His fellow contenders for Hottest Breakthrough MC should probably be scared too.
