How Obama Helped This Florida Felon From Being Condemned To Die In Jail Proud to make this one of my final actions as President. One of those people was Trenton Copeland, who penned a letter to REVOLT in October, detailing how he was sentenced six years ago to die in prison for a non-violent offense: I am Trenton Copeland. I am 33 years old and serving a life sentence in federal prison for a nonviolent drug offense. With no parole in the federal system, I have been fundamentally condemned to die in prison. Though it’s a memory I do not enjoy revisiting, I will never forget the day I was sentenced. I was 27 years old and to hear the judge tell me I was being committed to the custody of the Bureau of Prisons for the rest of my life was unreal. The life sentence I received for a nonviolent drug offense screamed that I was beyond redemption and unfit to breathe air as a free man ever again. Words cannot even begin to touch the feelings I had. I was only 27. Locked up for the rest of my life? I couldn’t really process it. And I still can’t, to be honest. The letter detailed how Copeland had turned his sentence into an opportunity to better himself, he accepted full responsibility for his fate, admitting his actions put him behind bars (charged with conspiring to deal cocaine, Copeland received a life sentence because he had two prior convictions for marijuana and cocaine possession). Since being sentenced he had worked to get his GED and had dreams of becoming a youth counselor, helping prevent others from suffering his same fate. He closed by saying without receiving clemency from Obama or major changes to the criminal justice system he would die behind bars. It’s no secret that Congress has been unresponsive to all of Obama’s pleas to reduce mandatory minimums for nonviolent offenders. In eight years, the former President has had to take matters into his own hands and grant commutations at his own discretion. The Washington Post has picked up where Revolt left off — detailing the turmoil Copeland and his family have experienced in the months since his open letter. A week after Copeland’s essay published, Obama commuted the sentences of nearly 100 prisoners. Copeland’s name was not on the list. Good news came to dozens more federal inmates across the United States that month, bringing Obama’s total number of commutations above 1,000 — more than the previous 11 presidents combined. Copeland didn’t make Obama’s list in October, WaPo reports. But he still had some remaining hope. On Tuesday, in one particularly dramatic, last-minute clemency action, Obama pardoned 64 people and commuted the sentences of 209 others, including Chelsea Manning, the Army private convicted of stealing secret diplomatic and military documents and giving them to WikiLeaks. The president also granted a commutation Tuesday to Oscar López Rivera, a Puerto Rican independence activist who was a member of the Armed Forces of National Liberation, a terrorist organization that killed and wounded people in the 1970s and 1980s with bomb attacks. In addition, Obama pardoned more than five dozen people, including baseball great Willie McCovey and retired Marine Gen. James E. Cartwright. Copeland was not on Tuesday’s White House list. The WaPo account of Copeland’s wait is painfully suspenseful, as the last days of Obama’s White House are coming to a close, he begins to fear for the worst. But then… On the last full day of Obama’s presidency, Annie Fray sat at her desk in a Pensacola marketing office. At five minutes to noon, her phone rang. It was Copeland’s lawyer. The president had released his last list. “I shouted so loud my head started hurting,” Fray said. Then she finished her shift and called her son, who will now be free before he turns 40, with half his life to go. Crazy right? To be able to put a face to these disastrous drug sentencing laws makes such a huge difference. Ohio School Shooting Leaves One Hospitalized, Shooter Arrested America’s new POTUS has a LOT of work to do to “ Make America Great Again ” and this tragedy at West Liberty High School in Ohio is prime example of that… According to CBSNews : A male student who was shot and wounded at an Ohio school was hospitalized Friday, and another student suspected in the shooting was in custody, officials said. The shooting happened at West Liberty High School, located on an education complex about 45 miles northwest of Columbus that houses both high school and elementary students, reports CBS affiliate WBNS. West Liberty-Salem Local School District Superintendent Kraig Hissong said the shooting occurred just as classes were getting underway. Local media said initial reports indicated that someone was shot through a window of a boys restroom in the high school. The shooting occurred on the school’s campus, but it wasn’t immediately clear whether it happened outside or inside a building, deputies told CBS News. You may not recognize the name Miguel Ferrer, but if you’re a fan of film and television, you’re almost certainly familiar with his work. Ferrer passed away today at the age of 61, but the respected “actor’s actor” and first cousin of George Clooney leaves behind a body of work that will endure for generations. Ferrer racked up more than 120 credits over the course of his 36 years in the industry. As a young man, he embarked on a career in music, playing drums for Keith Moon’s debut solo effort. It wasn’t long, however, before Hollywood came calling and Ferrer quickly found work as a character actor in a number of “tough guy” roles. Though he starred in films as varied as RoboCop, Traffic, and Iron Man 3, it is for his work in several long-running TV series for which Ferrer will likely be best remembered. Ferrer stole scenes in recurring roles on Miami Vice, Twin Peaks, Tales From the Crypt, Desperate Housewives, Crossing Jordan, and NCIS: Los Angeles. His talent for playing gruff cops and crooks made him a go-to favorite for crime dramas – as well as for projects that skewered the genre. Ferrer’s distinctive voice earned him frequent high-profile animation gigs in features like Mulan and Rio 2, as well as in beloved series such as Adventure Time and Robot Chicken. NCIS: Los Angeles showrunner R. Scott Gemmill issued a statement to the press just moments after news of Ferrer’s death went public. “Today, NCIS: Los Angeles lost a beloved family member,” Gemmill wrote. “Miguel was a man of tremendous talent who had a powerful dramatic presence on screen, a wicked sense of humor, and a huge heart. Our thoughts go out to his wife Lori, his sons, and his entire family. “He will be greatly missed.” Sources say Ferrer died peacefully at his California home this afternoon, surrounded by family and friends. He was active on NCIS and in several other projects up until the time when his illness left him bed-ridden. Ferrer was scheduled to appear in the Showtime reboot of Twin Peaks debuting in May, but it is not known if he had completed filming. Ferrer’s expansive body of work and reputation as one of Hollywood’s most genuine nice guys combined to make him a trending topic on Twitter just moments after the world learned of his death. Mentewab says she was 19 years old when she gave birth to a baby girl she called Yemasrech. In her native Amharic language, the name means ‘good news’. She did not know the father as her child was conceived as a result of a brutal rape attack. Mentawab was staying in her grandmother’s house in Shone when an intruder broke in and attacked her. She was too scared to tell her parents but when the pregnancy began to show she was forced to admit the truth. Initially disowned by her family, she went to live in the nearby town of Hosanna where she says she gave birth to the baby later named Zahara in January 2005. A fter finding out Yemasrech was adopted by a huge Hollywood family and is alive and well, Mentewab wants to meet her daughter.
