This Is America: ICE Set Up A Fake University In Detroit To Find And Deport Undocumented Immigrants

Source: asiseeit / Getty Homeland Security Operated This Fake University For Years It might just be easier to go to school where your parents or your older sibling did from now–that is, if you wanna make sure you’re attending a real college. Newly unsealed court documents revealed that the University of Farmington Hills–which is advertised online even now as a “nationally accredited business and STEM institution” in a suburb of Detroit –was, in reality, a sting operation. The whole thing was run by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement meant to lure immigrants on student visas into knowingly paying for fraudulent paperwork in order to stay in the country, the Detroit News reported on Wednesday. This whole hoax began back in 2015 but later intensified in 2017 after Trump’s inauguration, which resulted in the arrests of eight student “recruiters.” These arrests follow said recruiters allegedly taking in a collective $250,000 in profit in exchange for finding and helping at least 600 other students—mostly from India—to get in on the scheme. According to the federal grand jury indictments, both the recruiters and the students they found knew the university was operating an illegal scheme, but they did not realize it was actually run by ICE. These same student recruiters were also accused of helping the fraudulent students get the paperwork the students needed to be able to stay in the country from the university. Starting in 2017, ICE agents began posing as officials at the university, which didn’t have a campus at all, but rather, a small office in a corporate park. The school was legitimized by The Department of Homeland Security, who named the University of Farmington on its list of certified schools for international students. “Our innovative curriculum combines traditional instruction and distance learning with fulltime professional experiences,” the website promises. “We offer flexible class schedules and a focus on students who do not want to interrupt their careers.” A small number of students who joined in on the scheme asked to be paid for recruiting other fake students, and met several times with university officials who later turned out to be undercover ICE agents. Most of the students they recruited had actually arrived in the country on legal, valid student visas and then transferred to Farmington Hills. The students paid the university several thousands of dollars to get the paperwork proving they were full-time students and then proceeded to go along with their regular lives afterward. The eight recruiters in question were charged with harboring aliens for profit and conspiracy to commit visa fraud and face a maximum of five years in prison. The other fraudulent students who were arrested are facing deportation. As other reports point out, this is not the first time a fake university has been created as bait for visa fraud. Back in 2016, the Department of Homeland Security announced it had charged 21 people with student and work visa fraud after establishing a fake University of Northern New Jersey.

NYC Public Housing Residents Prep Rent Strike Amidst Brutal Heating Conditions

Source: Spencer Platt / Getty Meanwhile, Government Officials Say A New Initiative Is Coming It’s cold. FREEZING. And yet, some New York City Public Housing (NYCHA) residents still don’t have heat. Now, plans to go on rent strike are swiftly approaching, according to New York Daily News. Many NYCHA residents are spending their time at home in freezing temperatures as a polar vortex makes it’s way across the U.S. “It’s a disaster,” said 76-year-old Bertha Spivey, a resident of NYCHA’s Soundview Houses in the Bronx. “You can’t take showers or do dishes. We have no heat or hot water. If one goes, both go. It happens every winter for last four years.” Spivey’s neighbor Rachel Jean, 40, said she had to boil water to make it hot and bring some heat into her apartment. “We’re bathing with it,” Jean said. “When the water does come on it’s brown and then it shuts off. I have six kids. We’re just waiting for them to do something.” Tenants at the Queensbridge Houses in Long Island City are tired of waiting for the government to do something. Certain residents have already started laying the groundwork for a major rent strike, which could force NYCHA to make long-neglected repairs. Almost 70 people assembled at the Queensbridge complex on Monday where they received advice from housing advocates and lawyers. Back in 2013, tenants of NYCHA’s Lexington Houses in East Harlem threatened the city with a rent strike after having no gas for more than two weeks. NYCHA made the repairs 24 hours later. “I’m 100% behind a rent strike,” said Brooklyn City Councilman Rafael Espinal Jr. , a candidate for public advocate, who showed up at the rent strike strategy session. “If you’re not getting adequate service you have every right to withhold your rent until the work is done.” A NYCHA spokesman said repair crews arrived at various sites on Wednesday to restore heat. The agency also activated its situation room in Long Island City, Queens to prepare for dangerously low temperatures. Meanwhile, City Hall is trying to convince federal housing officials and a federal judge that NYC is capable of running its own housing system without any takeover from the Trump administration. Last fall, U.S. District Judge William Pauley rejected a settlement between the city and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), saying the federal government was neglecting its responsibilities to NYCHA. Both sides have since been discussing ways to address the various issues NYCHA residents face, including heating problems, mold and dangerous levels of lead. HUD secretary Ben Carson is set to appear in New York on Thursday to make a “huge & historic announcement that will be great news for the residents of @NYCHA,” according to a tweet from Lynne Patton, the head of HUD’s federal housing programs in New Jersey and New York. We’ll find out if they make impactful moves. Or else… They better gear up for that strike.

Celebrity Big Brother Recap: Who Won a Game-Changing Power?

With Jonathan Bennett and Ryan Lochte out of the house, it was obvious who the next target was going to be: Joey Lawrence.  In a rare turn of events, there’s a good chance that the first three evicted houseguests are all male, and it’s going to change the dynamic up quite a bit.  Joey’s association with Ryan, Jonathan, and Dinah left him in a precarious position, and with a new HOH about to be crowned, it meant there was a chance he could keep himself safe.  In the immediate aftermath of Ryan’s eviction, Lolo couldn’t help but turn on the waterworks. She may not have won gold in the Olympics, but she could sure as hell win a gold trophy for her acting.  Lolo flipped the bird at Ryan just days into the game, so it’s utterly laughable that she thinks people are buying the whole “we were buddies” schtick.  Joey wasted no time in starting up a new alliance consisting of himself, Dinah, Kandi, and Tamar. He pitched it, but not very well, and Tamar was not ready to jump ship.  Her statement on the matter was actually pretty darn hilarious. “You wanna have an alliance with you, me, Kandi (who don’t like to do nothing physical) and Dina? Against the bootleg superhero? No, that’s not finna work, we’re gonna lose!” Joey could have at least threw in a Melissa and Joey boxset to sweeten the deal, but the brains are most definitely lost on him.  Natalie and Lolo realized that now was the time to win the HOH. The pair has been picking and choosing which competitions to try winning because they thought they were in a good spot.  However, Ricky showed up to let them know that Joey wanted to target them, and it made the women realize that Joey needed to go next.  The HOH competition found the houseguests competing to make their way through a haunted house to find a set of car keys in the fastest time.  “I don’t do haunted houses, I don’t do no Halloween honey, I don’t do clowns, I don’t do snakes, I don’t do caterpillars, I don’t do birds, I don’t do none of that stuff that’s going to scare me, no, none of that,” said Tamar.  Tamar followed that up by walking out of the house after screaming too many times. Yup, she threw in the towel at the competition.  After Tom won the HOH competition, Kandi wanted to know where his head was it, so she quizzed him about alliances he was in.  He tried to turn the tables on her, and the conversation fizzled out.  Tom, Kato, and Ricky later strategized and settled on Tamar and Kandi as the nominations, with Ryan being the backdoor target.  However, Tom was now sketched out by Ricky and wondered just how long they would be able to trust him.  Before the nominations ceremony, the Power of the Publicist was unleashed on the house, giving one houseguest the power to keep themselves safe at one of the next two nominations or veto ceremonies.  While Big Brother only confirmed it would get the houseguest out of a “sticky” situation, the victor was Tamar, and she learned all about it.  In the end, Tom put up Joey and Kandi because he was worried that he would have to vote out one of his own allies.  What are your thoughts on all the latest action? Update: Black Woman Who Died Carrying Infant Down Subway Steps May Have Suffered ‘Medical Episode’

View post:

Malaysia Goodson , a 22-year-old Black woman, died after falling down the subway steps at the Midtown’s 7th Avenue station while trying to carry her 1-year-old daughter Rhylee in a stroller. She had apparently been also carrying groceries. Goodson was found “unconscious and unresponsive” at the bottom of the steps. The baby survived with minor injuries. “It may have been a medical episode,” an NYPD spokesperson told PEOPLE . “There’s no indication that the fall may have caused her death. But we can’t know for sure until the [medical examiner] lets us know.” “I don’t know, maybe she was starting to feel faint,” Goodson’s mother, Tamika Goodson, told the  Post . Goodson reportedly suffered from problems with her thyroid and complained of headaches prior to her untimely death. “I’m just still trying to take it all in,’’ the mom said. “I’m trying to see if I’m dreaming. I’m in disbelief.” Goodson’s death raised concerns around the lack of elevators in stations like the one Goodson died in. The MTA has approved 50 new elevators in stations across the city.

Fenty Sunglasses On The Way? A Conspiracy Theory From An Avid Rihanna Enthusiast

The rest is here:

Source: Robert Kamau / Getty Rihanna Navy! I’m freaking out. My brain is in a literal frenzy because it appears that Rihanna, Queens of Queens, Mother of Shade, Breaker of Billboard Charts, and Bad Gal of the House Fenty is launching a collection of sunglasses.    Here’s how I know!   Rihanna has been out and about lately sporting the most unique pair of sunglasses. They’re not quite square and they’re not quite round. But they are quite bomb and scream “Glow up!” Here are the terminator-styled shades perched on Rih’s beautiful face. The over-sized fit is a stark contrast to the tiny sunglasses she donned in Spring 2018. Now, she’s onto bigger and better.    All throughout January, the Bajan beauty has been breadcrumbing us to what will hopefully be a heap of gorgeous Fenty specs.    One of these pair unique shades is even said to posses a “Fenty” logo on the side. This was first caught by Instagram fashion account  Haus of Rihanna  and later mentioned by  Vogue . As of Tuesday afternoon, Rihanna posted a new Instagram story where she is donning another pair of mysterious shades while doing one of the many things she does best – posing. There’s also    a voice in the background explaining what sounds like terms to an exclusive service.   What is happening here?! Is @rihanna launching Fenty sunglasses or phone cases?!?! I NEED to know where I’ll be spending my money next!!! pic.twitter.com/5bxCzWqrEZ — Sade A Spence (@SadeASpence) January 29, 2019 “Every month. The first pack this February. It’s super limited. Only available first to the fifth every month. Only for extra VIP members, so you have to become a member to get access.”   The mention of “pack” and “first to the fifth very month” has brought me to the ultimate conclusion that Rihanna is dropping an exclusive subscription-based sunglasses service in just a few days – which means get ya coins ready y’all! You can thank me later. Tori Spelling & Dean McDermott: Locked In "Blowout Fight" Over Financial Mess!

Money can’t buy happiness. But, when it comes to Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott we might have an exception. On top of the couple losing all of their finances, their relationship is plummeting right along with it.  We learn from Radar that American Express Bank filed a ‘writ of execution order’ on January 4 asking the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office Department to take possession of $88,246.55 that Tori still owes. AmEx isn’t the only lender coming after the family, Spelling and McDermott are also being sued by City National Bank for allegedly failing to pay back a $400,000 loan. As a result, Radar reported that the troubling duo had a “blowout fight” in the wake of their financial mess. Spelling “screamed at Dean to get out of her life and not come back until he gets a job,” a source revealed. “She is sick and tired of their financial situations that they can’t climb out of.” The couples’ last big fight supposedly happened a week ago, just months after Radar shared “that the 45-year-old reality star kicked her hubby out of the house during the holidays. It’s easy to assume Spelling is dealing with some denial and shopping withdrawals, but meanwhile, her husband has resorted to extra measures to try and save their family financially. He is working in construction while also continuing to look for work as an actor. Tori, however, “thinks Dean is past his prime” and should be looking for other forms of work. But, cut him some slack! It’s not McDermott’s fault that Spelling grew up “rich beyond anyone’s wildest dreams” and never knew anything else.  Like, how to pay a bill.  But after racking up seven figures of credit card debt, we can only hope that the couple will learn how to manage whatever money they do make it out within the future. While McDermott continues to job hunt, Spelling is desperately trying to sell her reboot of Beverly Hills 90210  and Deadline says its already in the works. The reboot is supposedly featuring a number of original cast members alongside Spelling, including Jennie Garth, Ian Ziering, and Brian Austin Green. We hope the show makes a prosperous comeback! Mainly so Dean can stop doing construction.  The opportunity may also give the parents another chance to try and set a good example for their five young children. You know, on how NOT to be absolutely terrible with money management one day.  Money may not solve all problems. But, in this case, it definitely does.
