W hile Democrats did not get the blue wave they hoped for during yesterday’s midterm elections, there were some major wins such as regaining control of the House of Representatives. However, there are 19 wins that not enough people are celebrating — 19 Black women who ran for judicial seats in Harris County, Texas won last night. This is the biggest victory for Black women in the county’s history. See Also: Bill Cosby Sentenced To 3 To 10 Years In Prison For Sexual Assault Conviction The women call themselves the #Houston19. Back in August , one wrote on Facebook, “I’ve waited for the reveal of this photo of 19 judicial candidates for several weeks — 19 Black women running for judge in Harris County, Houston, TX. This entire time I’ve thought of what I’d say the day we were able to share this moment in history with everyone. But really I’m humbled. Never did I imagine that the day I decided to run to be judge, I’d become a part of a club of phenomenal Black women, sisters-in-law, gifted, brilliant, strong — everything I hope to be!” See the beautiful photo below: Now they are officially winners. Sandra Peake, Judge Ramona Frankin, Germaine Tanner, Angela Graves-Harrington, Cassandra Hollerman, Tonya Jones, Dedra Davis, LaShawn A. Williams, Latosha Lewis Payne, Linda M. Dunson, Toria J. Finch, Erica Hughes, Lucia G. Bates, Ronnisha Bowman, Michelle Moore, Sharon Burney, Shannon Baldwin and Lori Chambers Gray were all elected, and mostly by double digits. A huge congratulations and a reason to celebrate last night. That said, we are still pushing for every vote in Georgia to be counted so the true victor of the gubernatorial contest can rise up—not the won who is claiming a win because of voter suppression. Source: Georgia Public Broadcasting / Georgia Public Broadcasting According to Stacey Abrams camp, Fulton County did not have the adequate amount of machines for voters. They discovered 700 wrapped machines in a warehouse. This evidence is mote proof of widespread voter suppression throughout the state. Three of the four largest counties in the state – DeKalb, Gwinnett, and Cobb – have reported only a portion of the votes that were submitted by early mail. In Cobb County alone, anywhere between 25,000 and 26,000 votes were submitted early by mail. Four other large counties – Chatham, Henry, Douglas, and Clarke – have reported exactly 0 votes by mail. Absentee ballots represent another major pickup opportunity for Abrams. In Gwinnett County alone, more than 20,000 absentee ballots are waiting to be counted. Additionally there is an unknown number of absentee ballots that were potentially wrongly rejected which will also need to be counted. An historic number of provisional and paper ballots were cast throughout Georgia, these have yet to be counted. Machine breakdowns and shoddy election administration on the part of Secretary of State Brian Kemp contributed to the exceedingly large number of provisional and paper ballots. We will continue to update the public as more info arrises.

F ormer national teacher of the year Jahana Hayes has been declared the winner of her congressional race in Connecticut, paving the way for her to become the Constitution State’s first Black woman ever elected to Congress. Jahana Hayes wins the House race for Connecticut's Fifth District. #ElectionDay pic.twitter.com/aErMwTQ8Lb — Vox (@voxdotcom) November 7, 2018 “People have said to me: ‘She doesn’t have what it takes,’” Hayes, 45, said in declaring victory. “Not only am I built for this, I’m Brass City built for this.” She continued: “You … believe that we have to protect the future that we promised for our kids. You also believe that we have an obligation to be of service to someone else, … that true leaders lead from the front and lead by example, and reject all of this hate and intolerance and this indescribable fear that does not define who we are.” With the election, Hayes added to a number of historic results for a large group of African-American candidates running in the midterm elections across the country. The former national teacher of the year was still teaching full-time in the months leading up to Election Day. What will soon be her former profession has really helped inform the way she approaches politics, she told the Hartford Courant recently. “When you’re a teacher, you don’t pick and choose who you advocate for. You don’t choose who comes to your class. You don’t ask kids, ‘Is your mom a Republican or a Democrat,’ because that’s how I’m gonna decide how hard I’m gonna work for you,” Hayes said . “They come to you and you have a responsibility to leave them better than when they came. I think that’s what government should be doing.” Not unlike other Black women running for key state-wide elected seats, Hayes encountered her fair share of resistance from Democratic Party insiders who initially favored other candidates. Because of some creative maneuvering by the Connecticut state Democrats, Hayes didn’t get the party’s nomination. Still, she won the primary in August and forced Democrats to support her as the party’s nominee. That phenomenon was similar to those we saw for other Black women who were still able to win their respective primaries with little or no help from Democrats. Hayes explained why she was running for Congress when she declared in July. “Who will speak for them?” Hayes recalled asking herself one day while looking at her students. Thanks to the voters of Connecticut, that question has been answered, and then some. Source: Jeff Swensen / Getty Today is the day, Ladies and Gentlemen. Today is the day to exercise your right as an American and cast your vote which could potentially change the current state of the country. Midterm elections don’t usually get as much attention as they are this year — but that’s because there are some massive changes to be made in this nation , and it starts locally. When it comes to people of color, women and other minorities, this elections is our chance to shift the way America has been running itself for hundreds of years. A total of 34 Senate seats and all 435 seats in the House of Representatives will be up for grabs when we head to the polls today, which means it’s time to shake sh** up regarding Congress and Legislators. Folks are even calling this year the most important election in modern day U.S. History. Twitter User Brian Klass wrote : America’s character & trajectory will be decided today.Today is a referendum on Trumpism. In 2016, many people thought they’d roll the dice with someone who promised to “shake things up.” But now there are no excuses. We know who he is and what he represents. Now we either accelerate Trumpism or stop its forward progress. We’ve watched Cheetoh — er. Trump — disrespect and ostracize many people over the last two years, including African American women . That’s why it’s imperative that women as a whole, but specifically Black women, hit the polls today to change the narrative that has been placed on sistas. The NAACP tweeted, “This election is too important for any eligible voter of color to sit it out. Our lives are on the line, and it’s going to take all of us showing up to the voting booth to put America on the path of respecting our communities and our interests.” “You are not just the future, you are the present. Vote for what you believe in.” – @chadwickboseman . Young people, rise up! Vote November 6th. Our lives depend on it. #NAACP #Turnout18 #IWillVote pic.twitter.com/0gjMYgUMQu — NAACP (@NAACP) November 3, 2018 Let’s face it, voting can be tedious and boring. But like most boring things, it has to be done. So we’ve put together a playlist of songs that can help you through the process. OH and just in case you’re considering not casting a vote this year, think about what happened the last time you didn’t vote.
Image via Lawrence Lucier/FilmMagic/Getty Mariah Carey’s Former A&R Recounts How ODB Got On “Fantasy” (Remix) One of Mariah Carey ‘s most popular hits is undoubtedly her collaborative effort with the late-great Ol’ Dirty Bastard, “Fantasy” (Remix). At the time, Mariah and Dirty seemed like the most unlikely pairing in the universe, but we’ll be damned if it didn’t work BIG time. the story of Mariah Carey getting Ol' Dirty Bastard on the “Fantasy (Remix)” is a 10/10 and could honestly be made into a movie (via @billboard ) pic.twitter.com/l7Pcsmy9sA — Andrew Barber (@fakeshoredrive) November 5, 2018 If you’re like us, you might wonder how the hell this song even happened, well, the answer to that question came floating down our Twitter timeline courtesy of Andrew Barber of FakeShoreDrive via a 2016 Billboard article explaining the whole hilarious thing. Here’s portions of the story as told by Cory Rooney, Mariah Carey’s A&R at the time: I reached out to ODB and he wanted $15,000 to rap on the record. At the time, that was a lot of money, but it really wasn’t for Mariah Carey’s budget — so, no problem. He finally showed up, three hours late, and when he got there, it was about 10:30 at night. He had been drinking, and was on the phone when he walked in. Irate, screaming at some girl how he’s gonna come kill her, he’s going to kick her a**…and then whispering, “I love you.” Then screaming again. This went on for an hour. He finally came out and was like, “Yo, pardon me, this b**ch is driving me crazy. I need some Moet and Newports before we get into this record.” I said, “It’s 12:30 at night now bro, I don’t know where we’re going to get Moet from.” He started yelling at the assistants, calling them white devils, saying, “You white devils, y’all don’t want black people to have shit.” They went out for like an hour, and the only thing they could find were some Heinekens. He was so disgusted, he threw a bottle on the floor. Oh, but it gets better: At this point Mariah had been calling every hour on the hour, wanting to hear something over the phone. Tommy was pissed because Mariah was keeping him up, so he finally got on the phone with ODB — and after that, finally we started to record. He said one line — “me and Mariah, go back like babies with pacifiers” — then paused, said, “Yo, I need to take a break,” and went to sleep for 45 minutes. He woke up and was like, “Yo, let me hear what I did so far.” We played his one line back, he sang another line or two, and then slept for another hour. He would come up with a line, punch that in, go to sleep. He went to sleep 3 different times in the middle of trying to get that one verse done. If you listen to the record now, on his verse, you can hear that it’s punched in in pieces. He actually told the engineer, “Y’all better have your shit set and record it right, cause I’m not doing it twice.” I stayed in the studio until we finished it. So I was sleeping in the studio when Tommy and Mariah called me, and said they loved the record. But Tommy had a bright idea: let’s get ODB back in the studio, and instead of just, “New York in the house,” do [a line] for every city. I said, “You’ve got to be kidding.” Of course [ODB] wanted another $15,000. He came back to the studio, a little more mellow but dead tired. He’s sitting there picking food out of his teeth — he pulled a piece of food out of his mouth so big it was scary. I was like, “How long did you walk around with that food in your mouth?” Like, it was unbelievable. Then he fell asleep on couch, kicked one shoe off. His foot smelled so bad, we had to let him sleep and leave the control room. Eventually, we got the other parts done and that was that. I thought the story was over. Flip the page to read the tear-inducing finale.
Bella Hadid is getting some major hate, and this time it’s not over those weird nudes she took with her sister Gigi . This time, Bella was so excited to show off her runway-ready body in lingerie. Some body-shamers, however, decided that she looked too thin — and flooded her with deprecating comments. Bella Hadid shared a series of sultry lingerie pics on Instagram. Wearing black lingerie and snakeskin boots, she excitedly gushed in the captions. “@victoriassecret fittings today,” she announced with glee. “i can’t wait for you to see all of the beautiful outfits,” Bella raved. Showing that she knows that this is a big deal, Bella added: “I’m so grateful to be a part of the show again.” Bella looks genuinely amazing in these pics. She wrote that she is “feeling happier and healthier than ever.” Realizing that she would probably face some trolling, Bella decided to head them off. “All body types are different,” Bella reminded her followers in parentheses. “And,” she continued, different bodies “react differently to a great workout routine and a healthy diet.” She’s absolutely right. Some bodies will radically change their shape. Others may have improved health, but their overall shape won’t change. Unfortunately, body-shamers and concern trolls took to Bella’s comments to blast her slender figure. “Feed her somebody,” demanded one hater. “Skin and bone!” exclaimed another. “That photo shows everything but health!” “Oh honey, you look like an Avatar in the second pic especially,” one wrote. We’re sure that James Cameron is just glad that anyone thinks of that movie enough to make a hateful comparison. “I can’t be the only one who sees that!” the commenter continued. “You look frightening!” That last line is only not an insult on Halloween, folks. “Skin and bone,” exclaimed another, unoriginally. “That second page is quite frankly disturbing.” Some of these people are acting like they’ve never seen a Victoria’s Secret model’s ribs before. “We know that Bella could look better if she eats properly,” insisted another troll. That hater reasoned: “cuz she wasn’t looking like that before which makes us sure that she’s starving herself day after day.” Another lamented: “I will never understand why bones protruding through skin is considered beautiful.” Folks, if bones were protruding from her skin, she’d be bleeding and Instagram would have removed the photos for T&S violations. Another concern troll tried to pretend that they’re really on Bella’s side in a lengthy, body-shaming post. “I have nothing against being slim,” wrote this person. “But this is unhealthy on so many levels.” “Shame on @victoriassecret for encouraging and promoting this totally unrealistic image,” the commenter continued. The hater concluded: “We must put an end to the concept of looks = value.” That last line may be accurate, but this person seems to be devaluing Bella because of her looks. Hypocrisy much? Also, Bella is literally a model. if there is ever a time for someone’s looks to matter, it’s in the modeling world. Some came to Bella’s defense, and pointed out the double standard applied to women that does not seem to be applied to men. “You can see the ribs of Hue Jackman in Wolverine,” a commenter wrote. “But I doubt you think he’s unhealthy.” It’s true — the only men who seem to get this kind of treatment are those with exceptionally slender bone structures. Women, in the mean time, get hate if they’re slender or face what’s essentially the same kind of concern trolling if they’re plus size. Perhaps one day people will let women View Slideshow: Victoria Secret Fashion Show 2016: Who Looked Best?
Teresa Giudice talked more candidly than ever before today about the very unusual and unfortunate situation affecting her family. Appearing as a guest on Good Morning America, the Real Housewives of New Jersey mainstay discussed her husband’s deportation at length. (It really is true: Joe Giudice will be deported back to Italy after he’s released from prison in 2019 because he committed a felony and he never became a U.S. citizen, despite moving here for good as a child.) Teresa described the sentencing, which a judge handed down last month, as “heartbreaking” during her spot on GMA. She then elaborated as follows: “Very sad. The girls are really upset. You know, it’s hard for them … Adults can handle anything. It’s hard for children to go through this. They’re asking themselves, ‘Why is this happening to me?’ “Like, ‘I want my daddy to come home.'” Teresa and Joe are parents to a quartet of daughters: Gia, 17, Gabriella, 14, Milania, 12, and Audriana, 9. Both Gia and Milania have made public pleas for the deportation ruling to be overturned, with the former writing on Instagram : “My father is no threat to society. He is one of the most warm hearted people I know. “My father did his time. And learned from his mistakes. Isn’t being in there supposed to make you realize your mistakes so you can become a better person?” Teresa, meanwhile, says she’s been getting support herself from Gia, saying on Good Morning America: “I tell her every day she’s like the rock of her sisters. She’s helping me, you know, explain things to them – because my third daughter is having a really hard time with this.” In 2014, Teresa and Joe each pleaded guilty to 41 counts of fraud, including mail, wire and bankruptcy fraud. Moreover, Joe admitted that he did not pay approximately $200,000 in taxes. It totally sucks that four young girls will be living far apart from their father, but it’s hard to have too much sympathy for rich people who break the law and try to game the system. Teresa served 11 months behind bars in 2015; Joe’s 41-month sentence started the following year. Then, on October 10, a judge found the restaurateur “deportable and ineligible for any kind of relief,” ordering him to leave the United States when his sentence concludes in March. Giudice has said she will remain by Joe’s side even when he leaves the country, but various insiders have said otherwise. They predict a divorce. “I never thought I would be in this position,” Teresa said on GMA, adding: “We’ve been through a lot. I’ve gone through ups and downs, like being angry – but listen, I have to stay strong. “I have four beautiful daughters that, you know, they need their mommy.” View Slideshow: Teresa Giudice: Filing For Divorce Once Joe Gets Deported?! What’s the plan moving forward? Where will Teresa go from here? “Just take it one day at a time,” she concluded this morning. “That’s it.”
