Random Ridiculousness: 62-Year-Old Woman Adopted By 85-Year-Old Man For His $100 A Month Rent-Controlled Apartment

This woman deserves the pimp of the year award. You got an 85-year-old man to adopt you and his $100 a month rent-controlled apartment? Please gives us lessons in pimpin’ 101. Woman Adopted By Man For His Rent Control Apartment According to NY Post What does it take to get a rent-controlled apartment in New York City? For the 62-year-old sister of the mayor of Salt Lake City, it was a death-bed adoption by a senile 85-year-old man in order to claim rights to his Queens apartment and its $100-a-month rent. Although Pamela Becker grew up in a privileged family — her actual father, the late Ralph Becker, was US ambassador to Honduras during the Ford administration — she has chosen a low-rent lifestyle in Long Island City. And she took a curious route to get there. Married at the Waldorf-Astoria in 1976 and later divorced, Becker came to Long Island City in the 1990s. A cat-sitting gig brought her to a six-unit apartment building on 47th Road. There, she met Nicholas “Uncle Nicky” DeTommaso, a retired dock worker and generous man who liked to keep his door open and cook for his neighbors. DeTommaso was married for just six weeks in 1950 and had lived in the 47th Road building his whole life. Friends described him as a gregarious “Star Trek” fan. Becker befriended him and would take him shopping. By 2002, she had moved into the two-bedroom railroad-flat apartment. “She has a way of working on you until she gets what she wants,” according to a neighbor. Becker managed to get a power of attorney for DeTommaso in 2007, meaning she could make financial and legal decisions for him. Less than a month before DeTommaso died, Becker got the big prize: a new dad with deep pockets and piddling rent. Her adoption was formalized on June 23, 2009, and she had already become the beneficiary of his life insurance and pension, records show. Becker told The Post she took good care of DeTommaso as his health flagged, but denied he was senile. The onetime yoga instructor got DeTommaso to buy her a series of cars even though he did not drive, the neighbor said. “I feel sorry for her; she doesn’t have anyone,” DeTommaso would tell his friends. Becker managed to get a power of attorney for DeTommaso in 2007, meaning she could make financial and legal decisions for him. “Some people said I should marry him. I didn’t want to marry him — that’s gross. I don’t do stuff like that,” Becker said from the flat where she lives with two dogs and a cat. When DeTommaso died, the building’s owners thought the unit would be available and they could charge market-rate rent of $1,500 a month. They were shocked to learn Becker had been adopted by her elderly roommate and claimed she would “remain in this apartment for as long as I live.” She even changed her name to Maria DeTommaso. Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker Jr. said through a spokesman that his sister has “some challenges” and had been estranged from the family for “quite some time.” He said he was unaware of her adoption. But the “family ties” may have broken for Becker. The state Division of Housing and Community Renewal last month ruled she was not entitled to the apartment because she lived as a “family member” in the apartment for only 22 days before DeTommaso’s death. “I’m legally adopted,” insisted Becker, who has refused to move out. “I’m going to win this battle.” Do you think she is right to stand her ground or is she just another gold-diggin’ hussy? Downsizing: New Community In DC Prides Itself On Building 200 Square Foot Homes [Photos]

Could you leave all the ‘unnecessary’ things in life behind in exchange for just enough space and cheaper energy bills ?? According to The Daily Mail , there are lots of folks in DC that are saying ‘Yes We Can’… A neighborhood of miniaturized homes, that look like what some Americans build in their backyards as dollhouses, is propping up in northeast Washington, D.C. The 150 to 200 square feet living spaces in a transformed vacant lot behind a line of row houses, sell for between $20,000 to $50,000 a piece and are part of a national backlash to the conspicuous consumption of the McMansion era. The concept of the tiny residences came from Tumbleweed Tiny House Co., based in Santa Rosa, Calif., that launched in 2000. The plans faced a tepid reception but after the credit crisis of 2008, have exploded in popularity. The lot was purchased in March by a group of four DC residents who became interested in creating a neighborhood of tiny houses as an example of affordable, scaled back living. The group have transformed the concrete abandoned lot into a grassy area for the stall-like homes. They also have plans to construct a garden area and plant 10-15 trees to surround the lot. The group of homes will all circle an open, grassy area with a picnic table open to the community. The homes, ideal for one or two inhabitants, are naturally limited in space and so the neighborhood will include a 8’x20’ garage/storage structure for those items that just can’t be squeezed into the miniature shelters. Jay Shafer, who founded the The Tumbleweed Tiny House Co., has sold more than 1,500 sets of plans for the small living spaces. He said after the recession of 2008, the tiny houses took off. ‘Americans still like our stuff big and cheap, so a 100-square-foot house is not for everyone or big families. But people in tiny homes save a ton of money on heating and AC,’ he told the Washington Post. Though Shafer used to reside in a 90-square foot house, he has since upgraded to a 500-square-foot home after he and his wife welcomed their second child. ‘It’s no longer about impressing your friends with your huge 1980s castle, it’s more about your lifestyle: What restaurants and fitness centers and community life can you walk to? It’s not about driving everywhere and staying inside and spending hours watching TV,’ said Monty Hoffman, chief executive and founder of PN Hoffman, a Washington area condo builder. ‘They’re a statement that no one needs to be trapped in a mortgage they can’t afford in a house that’s too big for them anyway,’ Amy Lynch, a consultant with the Minneapolis-based BridgeWorks, told the Washington Post about the practicality of the miniaturized residences after the housing crisis of 2009. ‘The baby boomers raised their children. Now, they’re looking at all this stuff they have and thinking, ‘What has meaning for me now?’ Plus, these tiny houses are small enough that you can clean — actually clean them!’ The DC neighborhood that is beginning to take shape, called Stronghold, is the brainchild of Boneyard Studios, a group that has mobilized volunteers and residents to join the cause. But the pint-sized homes make some area residents feel like the American Dream is no long attainable. ‘These tiny houses feels like we are going backwards,’ Patricia Harris, who owns a rowhouse in the District, said. Hit the flip for more shots of the tiny lil’ homes…

WTF?? Shady Azz Notice At Texas Apartment Complex Warns Against ‘Adolescents Of Afro-American Race’!?!?

Don’t fawk with Texas ! A notice ‘warning’ residents about Afro-american youth was posted up at a Houston apartment complex. You can be sure the flyer ticked more than a few people off! According to The Grio : The Houston Chronicle reported that the notice, which was posted in the Rock Springs Apartments laundry room, read, “We ask you to please contact the office immediately every time you see teenagers or adolescents of Afro-American race or any other suspicious people in the property.” It was posted in English and Spanish, since the majority of the complex’s tenants are Hispanic. DeLoyd Parker, of S.H.A.P.E. Community Center, called on the Houston Housing Department and the Department of Housing and Urban Development to investigate the incident. “It’s typical of racist views constantly perpetuated by people who just don’t want people of color to be a part of their experience,” Parker said. According to the apartment complex, the notice is fake. When shown a photo of the sign, the apartment leasing employee said she had no knowledge of the notice and that “someone must have put it there.” K.K. Singh, a person who identifies as the complex’s property manager, wrote in an e-mail, “We are always careful what kind of notices we put out. Our notices are always dated and signed. You should be assured that this notice was never posted by our office. It appears someone has successfully fabricated it and been able to attract the attention of the media and take away their precious time from other momentous issues.” Deric C. Muhammad, of the Houston Ministry of Justice, said the notice is “indicative of a mindset that causes black teens to be racially profiled, not only by apartment complexes, but by convenience store owners and others.” He urged African-American families living in the apartments to “get the hell out of there as soon as possible.” Shelby Stewart, the chairman of the Coalition to Defend Civil Rights and Human Dignity, called the notice “tragic.” “It’s just depressing whenever I see racism rear its ugly head,” she said. “It’s tragic because crimes are committed by blacks, whites, Hispanics and Asians, but they have singled out a race of people.” GTFOHWTBS!!! Do you think this was a bogus notice or is the Property Manager trying to cover isht up?? Images via tumblr

DAYUUUUUUM GINA!!! “Martin” Star Tisha Campbell And Hubby Duane Martin Sued For $430K By Bank After Defaulting On Home Loans

We know Tommy ain’t have a job but come on! Daaaamn Gina! You owe a TON of money to the bank this according to a new lawsuit obtained by TMZ : “Martin” star Tisha Campbell and her husband Duane Martin have been sued by City National Bank for more than $430k … over a stupid home equity loan the couple took out in 2008 … right when the housing bubble was bursting. According to legal docs obtained by TMZ … Tisha and Duane (an actor who starred in the ill-fated “Paul Reiser Show”) took out a $625k home equity loan on a slick waterfront property in Lake Arrowhead, CA . However, at the time of the loan the couple still owed more than $730,000 on their mortgage to ANOTHER financial institution — Aurora Bank. Long story short — Tisha and Duane allegedly defaulted on BOTH loans. Earlier this year, Aurora foreclosed on the home … and according to the docs, the bank sold it at auction for $925k. Aurora got paid first … and sent the remaining $192k to CNS to partially satisfy the home equity loan, which had already ballooned to $633,119.52. City National is now going after Tisha and Duane for the balance … plus interest. But Tisha and Duane are PISSED — a rep for the couple tells TMZ … CNS is just trying to “bully” them for money they shouldn’t have to pay. The rep points out that CNS received a $400 million government subsidy in 2009 to help people like the Tisha and Duane through the mortgage crisis … and says, “In this case City National refused to share the significant benefit that they received with the Martins.” The Martins are now threatening legal action against the bank — claiming the bank discriminated against them. When asked about the nature of the alleged discrimination, the rep would not elaborate. Pay yo bills girl! Anyone who can afford a house that expensive should not qualify for any loans. Maybe those “Martin” checks have stopped coming in?

Nas even returned to his old stomping grounds to record is latest video, “Nasty.” However, Nas wasn’t actually born in Queens. Take A Tour Of Nas’ Birthplace The prolific Virgo was born in Brooklyn Jewish Hospital on September 14, 1973. According to his father, Olu Dara , a young Nas cut his musical chops on the streets of BK. “I thought that he would become a great trumpeter because he was playing to audiences in the streets of Brooklyn when he was three or four,” he told The Source magazine in an August 2004 cover story. “He used to draw a lot of crowds [on Eastern Parkway]. It was fascinating to me. But his lip was becoming distorted so I made him quit. I remember him being very disappointed when I told him to stop playing.” Needless to say Nas has done ok without the trumpet. But maybe it’s something he’ll pass it down to his son, Knight. This Is The Trifling Broad Who Left Her Daughters On A Sidewalk, Neighbors Say She Treated Them Badly And Regularly Cursed At Them

The sorry a$$ beyotch has been arrested! A Brooklyn mother has been busted for abandoning two of her daughters on a sidewalk — leaving them alone hours after she gave them a curse-filled tongue-lashing, cops and neighbors said. Dalisha Adams, 26, was charged Monday with two counts of endangering the welfare of a child for cruelly leaving Dominae, 5, and Diani, 3, in the cold, police said. A neighbor of Adams at the Breukelen Houses in Canarsie said she often heard the mom screaming at the girls and their older sister, who lives with an aunt. “She was always yelling at the kids, ‘Shut the f— up,’” said the neighbor, who did not want to be identified. “One day, I heard her curse out the little baby, ‘I’ll punch you in the f—— face,’” the neighbor said. She said she heard another blowup on Sunday, not long before the girls were found about two miles away in front of the Bay View Houses, clutching disposable diapers. “Usually I hear the yelling at night or early in the morning, 4 or 5, but this was in the daytime,” the neighbor said. “A kid was crying. She was saying, ‘Stop crying. Shut the f— up. I’m gonna get you out of here.’” The girls told police their mother left them on the sidewalk and just drove away. An elderly couple found them wandering up and down the street. The 5-year-old told cops their mother’s name is Dalisha and that she was driving a white car but did not know the make nor model of the vehicle. Cops went door-to-door in an effort to identify the children. About 10:10 p.m. on Sunday night, police showed up to Adams’ apartment and used a crowbar to open the door, a resident said. Adams apparently was not inside. She surrendered at the 69th Precinct stationhouse around 11:30 p.m. A neighbor said the girls were usually well-dressed and clean, and Adams’ MySpace page is filled with photos of her daughters. But another resident of the housing project confirmed Adams was harsh with the kids. “She talks very dirty to the children and treats them nasty. She pulls their arm and curses at the children,” the neighbor said. “It’s not right,” she said of the abandonment. “They’re better off with someone else.” The sisters did not appear to be abused but were taken to Brookdale University Hospital as a precaution. The Administration for Children’s Services confirmed it took custody of the two younger girls but declined to say whether it had an open case on the family. SMH.
