Jessica Sanchez Wanted To Push ‘Girl Power’ On ‘American Idol’

‘I just wanted a girl to win this year so bad,’ the ‘Idol’ runner-up tells MTV News of losing to Phillip Phillips. By James Montgomery Jessica Sanchez Photo: MTV News To hear her tell it, Jessica Sanchez didn’t exactly have high hopes heading into last week’s “American Idol” finale . In fact, she didn’t have any hopes, high or otherwise. Which, given her supreme talent (and diva-riffic pedigree), is sort of surprising. “I never thought I was going to win,” she told MTV News. “And I think at that moment, during the finale, I knew I wasn’t going to win, and I was like, ‘Let me just sing my songs, let me have fun, let me be in this moment.’ Even making it to the finale surprised me. You saw my face!” Of course, if you ask her to elaborate on just why she felt she had no chance at beating eventual champ Phillip Phillips , she’ll mention one thing: “Change Nothing,” the ( genuinely pretty terrible ) “coronation song” she was saddled with during the finale. Simply put, from the moment she first heard the tune, she knew it wasn’t the right fit for her. But, as she’d done all season, she was determined to give it her all, no matter what. “It was confusing, because it was the winning song, and you try to pick a song that you’d want to put out as a single but also that would sound good when you won the competition. … I felt like I had to sing a vocally strong song but also one that was kind of mainstream, and that was in the middle, kind of,” she explained. “And even listening to it, I was telling them, ‘Some things have to be changed in this, because this is not completely me.’ And when we did that, nothing was really that changed, and that’s why it came out like a pop single. I totally agree with Randy [ Jackson]: That song was not me at all. I want to do pop, but, like, just a sprinkle of it, not a whole bucket.” And while Sanchez has nothing but praise for Phillips (“He’s a really great talent”), and despite her claims that she never believed she had a shot at the season 11 crown, that doesn’t mean she wasn’t disappointed by the results. Because she was definitely looking to reverse recent history and win one for the girls. ” ‘American Idol’ isn’t fixed. It really is America, and if America enjoys [male singers], then they do. I’m just here to please my fans, and make music for them. Now that the competition is over, I can do that and be happy with that,” she said. “But it’s definitely one thing that pushed me to want to really win. … I was doing it for my family, I was doing it for myself because I loved it, but I just wanted a girl to win this year so bad — even if it wasn’t me. It could’ve been Hollie [Cavanagh] or Skylar [Grey]. But I was just like, ‘We gotta show that girl power!’ ” From the sound of things, Sanchez is certainly looking to push the “girl power” agenda with her post-“Idol” debut, mentioning the likes of Beyonc

Bobby Brown Trusts Bobbi Kristina Won’t Repeat His Mistakes

‘She’s smart enough to not go down the same road that I did in the past or her mother did in the past,’ he tells MTV News. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Bobby Brown Photo: MTV News Bobby Brown is no stranger to controversy. Though there are always rumors and speculation surrounding the Bad Boy of R&B, Brown is very clear about one thing: his love for Bobbi Kristina , his daughter with the late Whitney Houston . “That’s my baby girl. She’ll forever be my baby girl. She’s doing what she’s doing, and I’m extremely proud of her,” Brown told MTV News correspondent Sway on Tuesday (May 29). “She’s acting and she’s working on music and she’s doing what she has to do to recover from her loss — our loss.” The New Edition singer is readying the release of his first solo album in 14 years. The Masterpiece, as he titled it, is due out June 5 and will come four months after the death of his ex-wife. It has been tough for Bobby and his daughter. In February, the same month her mother passed away, Bobbi Kris was rushed to the hospital and treated for anxiety. There have been reports of drug abuse, but her dad chalked it up to just a phase. “Any parent that has a teenager in their life, they go through things. They go through phases that they might not be doing exactly what you want them to do in life, but they grow out of it, and my baby girl has grown out of it,” he said confidently. “I trust and believe that she’s smart enough to not go down the same road that maybe I did in the past or her mother did in the past. She’s extremely smart.” Brown insisted that there is nothing that can come in the way of his love for his daughter, not even rumors that she wants to change her last name to Houston to distance herself from her pop. “She can’t change her last name, her name is her name. She’ll forever be known as Bobbi Kristina Brown. There’s no changing that, there’s no taking that back,” he assured. The hardened singer simply gushed, thinking back to the Billboard Music Awards when his baby girl gave a speech honoring her mother. “I saw her speech and, of course, she’s just beautiful, you want to keep looking at her,” he said proudly. Drake’s Says His Critics ‘Let Me Know That I’m Relevant’

‘It’s important for me to let my fans know I really don’t care. I’m confident,’ Drake tells MTV News of how he deals with constant criticism. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Drake Photo: MTV News Drake understands that no artist is above criticism. So it’s not that Drizzy doesn’t hear his detractors, he just chooses to ignore them. At least that’s what he told MTV News’ Sway Calloway during a May 17 Club Paradise tour stop in Houston, Texas. “There will be days when I walk in an arena and people will cheer and then there might be days when I walk in an arena and people might boo, but it all sounds the same to me because it’s all just noise that lets me know that I’m relevant,” Drake said, sharing some words of wisdom that was given to him by boxing champ Floyd Mayweather. “I don’t get booed,” Drizzy continued. “I don’t face that. I mean he faces that challenge but my challenge is more with social media and open opinions and people just feeling like they need to talk.” Drake’s music, and just about his every move, is dissected through the media as well as on Twitter and blogs. The fact that he sings as well as raps has made him a target for those looking to take away his hip-hop cred. Still, the “Headlines” MC remains one of rap’s most successful draws today. Common called him out the OVO general on “Sweet,” a single from his 2011 album The Dreamer/The Believer . Many also believe that G.O.O.D Music’s Pusha T has also been throwing subliminal jabs at Drake, first on last year’s “Don’t F–k With Me” freestyle, then on his “Sweet” freestyle. Pusha has gone on record saying that he wasn’t dissing Drake and he actually likes the Toronto MC’s music, but after Push dropped his new single “Exodus 23:1,” speculation began to swirl that he was again taking aim and Drake and his mentor Lil Wayne . Weezy responded with a poignant tweet: “F— pusha t and anybody that love em.” It is important to note that when he sat with Sway, Drake did not address Pusha T or any other rappers directly, but he did speak about his detractors in a very general sense. “It’s important for me to let my fans know I really don’t care. I’m confident,” he said sternly. “I love the music I make and the videos I make and the people I associate with and every decision I’ve ever made.” For Drake, taking the stage on each stop of his Club Paradise Tour is all the assurance that he needs. “Just to let [fans] know that I don’t care about anything else outside of this right here,” he said from backstage at Houston’s Toyota Center, referencing the army of fans waiting for him to perform. “That other stuff, hiding behind computers and yip-yapping all day on radio stations, it’s like that’s cool, man, for points and popularity, but at the end of the day, there is still 15,000 people here.” Have you seen Drake’s Club Paradise show yet? Black Man Gets 20 Years In Prison For Trying To Sneak Out Of US To Give al-Qaida Military Drones And GPS Equipment

Barry Walter Bujol Gets 20 Years For al-Qaida Connection Sneaky azz ninja! A Texas man convicted of trying to sneak out of the U.S. to give al-Qaida restricted military documents, GPS equipment and money was sentenced on Thursday to 20 years in prison — the maximum punishment he could receive. Barry Walter Bujol Jr. was also ordered to pay a $10,000 fine during his sentencing hearing before U.S. District Judge David Hittner. “We do not take matters of potential national security lightly,” U.S. Attorney Kenneth Magidson said in a statement. “This case and its successful resolution represents our commitment to making our communities a safer place to live.” Before his sentence was handed down, Bujol told Hittner he never wanted to hurt anyone. He also said prosecutors were wrong in portraying him as a terrorist. Pakistan jails doctor who helped CIA find bin Laden “I’m a person, not a terrorist,” he said in a brief statement, adding that he had made some mistakes. Bujol’s attorney, Daphne Silverman, had asked for a sentence of seven years, telling Hittner that her client was not dangerous. “He’s an incredibly strong and peaceful person,” she said. But prosecutor Stephen McIntyre told Hittner that Bujol, in coded messages sent to people he believed were members of al-Qaida, advocated the destruction of U.S. drones and the murder of American soldiers. “The defendant talked about his desire to live and die with the brothers (members of al-Qaida),” McIntyre said. Hittner sentenced Bujol to 15 years for the charge related to trying to provide help to a terrorist group and five years for identity theft. The judge ordered the sentences be served consecutively. Prosecutors said Bujol, a U.S. citizen, sought to join al-Qaida and provide it with money, two nonpublic restricted-access Army manuals related to U.S. drones and GPS equipment. He was arrested in May 2010 following a two-year investigation after he used fake identification to sneak into a Houston port and board a ship bound for the Middle East. The 31-year-old said he never intended to harm the United States or any American citizens, and that he had wanted to leave the country because he was displeased with U.S. foreign policy, particularly drone attacks. He said he wanted to become a better Muslim. “We are using drones to murder and attack people,” Silverman told Hittner. “It was a valid position (Bujol) was taking … to disapprove of drones. That’s what his concern was, defending people and not hurting people.” According to court documents, Bujol used at least 14 email addresses to hide his activities from authorities, and he advocated attacking U.S. facilities where military weapons were manufactured. Bujol, who lived in Hempstead, about 50 miles northwest of Houston, was a student at nearby Prairie View A&M University. Tariq Ahmed, an attorney with the Muslim Civil Liberties Union, which also worked on Bujol’s case, said many Muslims in Houston were afraid to speak out on Bujol’s behalf because they didn’t want to be associated with a terror-related case. Ray J Out of Hospital, Likely to Survive

In a word: phew . A day after Ray J – the man best known for directing the Kim Kardashian sex tape and years later dating Whitney Houston – was hospitalized for what sources initially described as exhaustion, his rep says the singer is free and healthy. Says a Ray J rep to Us Weekly : “Ray J has been released from the hospital in Las Vegas and is back home in Los Angeles following an extensive battery of tests to make sure that he did not have a blood clot in his lungs, which is potentially a deadly condition that can occur following a long haul plane flight.” That much is true. Heavy D passed away last year from a blood clut and Ray J did touch down in Las Vegas this weekend after a 32-hour round trip to China. He arrived in time for the 2012 Billboard Music Awards, and actually got in a verbal altercation with members of Houston’s family – most notably her mother, witnesses say – who wanted the invited guest kicked out of the festivities.
