Craigslist is hub for child prostitution, allege trafficked women

Criticism is building for Craiglists' adult advertisement section on the website. The site is under investigation in South Carolina for promoting prostitution and the creator Craig Newmark was confronted by a CNN reporter about the allegations. Now in the Washington Post, an advert paid by by Fair Fund (charity which helps trafficked women) showed an open letter written by two women who were sold for sex on the website. It sounds like the letter highlighted the issues of sex trafficking of women and children on the website. Craiglist chief executive Jim Buckmaster stated they're working with police to monitor, identify for arrests of exploitation adverts on the website. “One of the women, who identified herself as MC, said she was forced into prostitution at the age of 11 by a man who trafficked “many girls my age”. “All day, me and other girls sat with our laptops, pasting pictures and answering ads on Craigslist, he made $1,500 a night selling my body, dragging me to Los Angeles, Houston, Little Rock – and on one trip to Las Vegas in the trunk of a car,” the ad said. “Craig we write this letter so you will know from our personal experiences how Craigslist makes horrific acts like this so easy to carry out … and the men who arrange them very rich.” The second woman, identified as AK, said that last year she met a man twice her age who pretended to be her boyfriend. “He put my picture on Craigslist, and I was sold for sex by the hour at truck stops and cheap motels, 10 hours with 10 different men every night. This became my life,” the ad said. “Men answered the Craigslist advertisements and paid to rape me. The $30,000 he pocketed each month was facilitated by Craigslist 300 times.” AK said she knew of more than 20 girls who were trafficked on the site: “-Guardian added by: Mcellie

BP faced with $10 billion lawsuit over Texas City toxic release

Just as BP began celebrating a proclaimed success in its Gulf of Mexico catastrophe, the company now finds itself in the woeful position of facing a $10 billion lawsuit over a 40-day toxic chemical release in Texas City, Texas earlier this year. A $10 billion class action lawsuit was filed Tuesday on behalf of 2,000 claimants against oil behemoth BP after the company engaged in a 40-day upset during April and May that released at least 538,000 pounds of known toxins into the Texas City skies. The event began just two weeks before the company became very well-known over its Deepwater Horizon incident in the Gulf of Mexico. Tony Buzbee, a Texas attorney who also represents Gulf coast residents impacted by the Deepwater Horizon oil disaster, filed the suit on Tuesday for his clients seeking compensation for “health effects including all symptoms associated with acute benzene exposure,” according to The Telegraph( http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/newsbysector/energy/oilandgas/7925565/BP-hit-… ). As reported earlier by Digital Journal( http://www.digitaljournal.com/article/294675 ), the toxic leak, or upset, occurred at BP’s Texas City refinery from April 6 to May 16, releasing hundreds of thousands of pounds of toxins into the air, including benzene, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen oxides. In a ProPublica( http://www.propublica.org/article/bp-texas-refinery-had-huge-toxic-release-just-… ) report of the incident, company officials were aware of the situation, underestimated its severity, and kept the plant in production to allay the chance of investors’ worries. It notes “the company’s corporate culture favors production and profit margins over safety and the environment. The 40-day release echoes in several notable ways the runaway spill in the Gulf. BP officials initially underestimated the problem and took steps in the days leading up to the incident to reduce costs and keep the refinery online.” Buzbee, already involved in legal action against BP as he represents 15 Deepwater Horizon rig workers, dozens of fisherman, dock workers, and restaurants – all impacted by the Gulf of Mexico debacle – is a prominent Houston lawyer with a solid record in winning settlements from oil companies, Mother Jones reports( http://motherjones.com/blue-marble/2010/06/rigs-fire-i-told-you-was-gonna-happen ). The lawsuit over the Texas City incident alleges “tens of thousands of individuals were injured and had his or her long-term health put in jeopardy after being exposed to extremely high levels of Benzene and other toxic chemicals while working at the BP Texas City Refinery or by simply living or working in Texas City,” according to Yahoo News( http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_upshot/20100803/bs_yblog_upshot/bp-faces-10-billio… ). The lawyer is seeking “punitive damages against BP in excess of $10 billion.” added by: toyotabedzrock

In Light of NAACP Condemnation, Media Brings Back Tea Party Fraud

Memo to media members wishing to invite the Tea Party Founder on your show, or use him as a source for your biased reports:  He isn’t exactly who you think he is. Since the NAACP voted to condemn extremist elements in the Tea Party, news networks, sites, and liberal blogs have rushed to include ‘Tea Party Founder’, Dale Robertson, in their reports.  Problem being, Dale Robertson as Tea Party anything has frequently and thoroughly been, um … ‘refudiated’.    Despite this, the media has a history of holding Robertson up as a shining example of Tea Party racism.  Why?  Robertson once demonstrated a level of ignorance that boggles the mind by holding a sign reading “Congress = Slaveowner, Taxpayer = (N-Word)”, at a Houston Tea Party Society (TPS) event. The reality however, is that Robertson has predominantly self-described, if any, links to the Tea Party movement, while legitimate factions of the movement have had to repeatedly distance themselves from the man.  Robertson was expelled from the event at which he was holding the aforementioned sign on the very same day.  He was formally denounced in a statement released by the Houston TPS.  He was called ‘no friend’ of the Tea Party at Pajamas Media, and mocked at RedState.  He was shown to be for his infamous sign , before he was against it. So logically, the media has decided to help further the cause of the NAACP by bringing Robertson back out of the shadows.  Since word of the the NAACP resolution got out, Robertson’s name has appeared at… The Huffington Post CBS’ Face the Nation ABC News Beyond Chron , San Francisco’s alternative newspaper The Kansas City Star The Daily Kos A blog called The Stir , which also offers a handy list of ‘phrases to drop’ to counter the Tea Party defense. An Op-Ed at the Daily Caller And Mediaite It should be noted that Mediate refers to the fact that the Houston TPS still has the offending image of Robertson on their web site, in an apparent attempt to demonstrate their tolerance for his bigotry.  But it fails to include the context that yes, while the image is on their site, it is there as a reference to explain just who this guy is, and why they have had to deal with him.  They actually link to the image with the following statement: “Yes, at our very first tea party event in February of 2009, this piece of work strolled in with his awful sign, attracting the lone media camera and sentencing us to an eternity of disassociation.  We dealt with him on that day, expelling him from the event.” Then of course, there’s the NAACP themselves.  They have Robertson’s photo featured on their page announcing the condemnation of extremist elements in the Tea Party.  They were also kind enough to include photos which show the kind of fringe group that could only be protesting a President because he’s black, and because they’re racist.  For instance, a racist picture of the President being portrayed as Hitler.  No not this one …

Bun B Says ‘Hottest Breakthrough MC Of 2010’ Finalist Wiz Khalifa Is A Hit Away From Being A Huge Star

‘He’s made the connection with the people,’ the Houston rapper says of ‘Hottest Breakthrough MC’ nominee. By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Shaheem Reid Bun B Photo: Frazer Harrison/Getty Images Top-five “Hottest Breakthrough MC of 2010” pick Wiz Khalifa has been on the grind for a while but appears poised to own the first year of the decade with his buzzy mixtape Kush & OJ. The tatted-up Pittsburgh rapper has been steadily building a loyal fanbase, layering his languid flow over spacey beats and collaborating with fellow “Hottest Breakthrough MC” nominee Curren$y . Among those checking for Wiz this year is Houston O.G. Bun B, who said the rising MC is close to making it really big in the hip-hop game. “I think he’s just really that one song away from actually cracking because he’s made the connection with the people,” Bun B told MTV News about the “Taylor Gang” MC. Bun said that Khalifa’s innovative hustle, like many other young hip-hop artists, really makes use of the outsize marketing power of the Web to score fans. “It used to be you make a song and put it out and then try to connect with [the] people, but now, there’s a whole new D.I.Y. movement going on in independent music, especially in hip-hop,” Bun observed. “These young cats are taking full advantage of the opportunities with YouTube and Twitter and all these other different viral video outlets that the Internet [has] and they’re making it happen.” Bun isn’t the only lyrical heavyweight with Khalifa on his radar. Rick Ross singled out Wiz and his sometime partner-in-rhyme Curren$y for the remix to his lush summer jam, “Super High.” Wiz recently talked to Mixtape Daily about how it feels to have the Miami boss in his corner. “It was a good look for me, because hasn’t been nobody really big, anybody who’s as influential in the game right now as Ross is, saying, ‘I really f—s with Wiz,’ or, like, been seen on camera with me. That was a big power move for the both of us [Curren$y and Khalifa].” MTV News will be rolling out the top-five candidates for “Hottest Breakthrough MCs of 2010” all week — with the winner being revealed on MTV2’s “Sucker Free Summit” on Sunday at noon! 30-year-old Sheyla Hershey expected to get attention from her chest after a surgery in June increased her bust to a world record setting 38KKK, but she didn’t anticipate it would be because her implants were threatening her life. The 5′3″ native Brazilian who lives in Houston, has undergone 30 plastic surgery procedures costing more than $40,000. Most of these operations have been to increase her bust, but she has also had work done on her nose, lips, and butt. Package bomb goes off at Houston oil executive’s home

Pipe bomb disguised as chocolates sends woman to hospital A seemingly anonymous gift left on the front porch of a Houston home owned by an oil company executive has the city's affluent population of oil profiteers on edge this weekend, after that package exploded and seriously injured a 62-year-old woman. Neighbors of the victim told an ABC News affiliate in Houston that the bomb was disguised as a box of chocolates in a gift bag, left on the home's doorstep around Thursday. Instead, it contained what authorities described as a pipe bomb carrying a load of thumb tacks and nails. When she opened the package on Friday evening, standing on her back porch around 6:30, it resulted in shrapnel embedded across the woman's face — injuries police said were not life-threatening. “It wasn't immediately clear whether the house was targeted, however, Eyewitness News found out the home is owned by an oil company executive,” the ABC affiliate further noted. Story continues below… Police refused to release the victim's name and none of the area media stated who the home belongs to or which oil company employs that individual. However, an examination of the homefront shown on local news reports correlated to images featured on Google Street View. A series of basic searches across a publicly available property database revealed the home's owner to be James Brock Moore III, president of Adams Resources Exploration Corporation (AREC). A separate name listed on the home's appraisal record, one Vennie Wolf, may or may not be the bomb's victim. The company brags on its Web site that it successfully “exploited” the “Austin chalk,” which is a geological formation that's proved tricky to drill under due to its fractured oil and gas stocks. Many companies have adopted advanced horizontal drilling techniques to conquer the chalk and penetrate even deeper into underground Texas mineral reserves. AREC says its areas of interest stretch along the Gulf coast from south Texas all the way to Alabama. No further details could be confirmed at time of this writing. Neighbors described the bomb's detonation as sounding similar to a transformer blowing out. One man, Dennis McCoy, who spoke to Houston's KHOU 11 News, claimed to have been asked by the woman if he'd left a box of candies on her doorstep. The box apparently carried a simple note saying, “Thank you.” Initial online speculation centered on whether the bombing may be a targeted hit on someone associated with embattled oil company BP, which is currently held as responsible for the worst environmental accident in humanity's history. A connection of that nature is at least not immediately apparent. Such speculation would appear to be driven only by police refusal to release the victim's name and local media's reticence to give a precise address. Local reports said that the package note also carried the woman's name, except misspelled. “I can't believe anyone would do something as terrible and tragic to a person like this lady,” Karen Gennity, a neighbor, told ABC 13. This video is from Houston's ABC 13, broadcast Saturday, July 10, 2010. http://rawstory.com/rs/2010/0711/package-bomb-houston-oil-company-executives-hom… added by: treewolf39

James Van Der Beek Recalls His Car’s ‘Slow Death’ On ‘When I Was 17’

‘The car was basically a prophylactic on wheels,’ he laughs on this week’s episode. By Jocelyn Vena James Van Der Beek Photo: MTV News Getting a car when you’re a teenager is a pretty common rite of passage. And when James Van Der Beek was 17, his car certainly had him standing out from the crowd — thanks to its very poor condition. “With the money I had made doing theater, I purchased, for $800, a 1986, candy-apple-red Hyundai Excel,” the former “Dawson’s Creek” star recalls on this week’s episode of “When I Was 17,” which also features “Jersey Shore” star Snooki and N.E.R.D. frontman Pharrell Williams. Van Der Beek added that the car had “lots of miles on it.” In the beat-up car, Van Der Beek definitely wasn’t earning any points with the ladies. “The car was basically a prophylactic on wheels,” he laughed. “We called it the stud mobile, because to ever get any action in that car, you had to have game like nobody’s business.” While the car had quite a few flaws, one of its negatives turned into a positive. “It had its own anti-theft device, which was that in order to start it, you had to pump the gas vigorously and do that at least three times,” he explained. “When I would turn corners, I would put my foot on the clutch, and if I didn’t rev the gas … it would stall.” Eventually, Van Der Beek had to say goodbye to his beloved Excel. “The car died a slow death,” he said. “And then, at one point, it got loud [and died].” “When I Was 17” — this week featuring Van Der Beek, Snooki and Pharrell Williams — airs Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV.
