The Emmy Awards: Predicting The Winners

‘Lost,’ ‘Glee’ poised to win big during Sunday night’s telecast. By Kara Warner Matthew Morrison and Jayma Mays in “Glee” Photo: FOX The 62nd annual Primetime Emmy Awards take place on Sunday night (August 29), which means there’s still time to speculate over who will take trophies home from the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles. Fan favorites Betty White and Neil Patrick Harris have already snagged Emmys — which stars and shows will round out this year’s winners list? Here’s a look at our picks. Outstanding Drama Series It seems that the likely winner here is “Lost,” which ended with a much buzzed-about bang — an estimated 13.5 million viewers tuned into the May 23 series finale . “Mad Men” and “Breaking Bad” could also pull out a victory, but Emmy newbie “True Blood” is a long shot. Outstanding Lead Actor And Lead Actress In A Drama Series Fans and critics alike rejoiced at the recognition for “Friday Night Lights” actors Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton, but they will have steep competition from previous winners like Bryan Cranston of “Breaking Bad,” Hugh Laurie of “House”, Glenn Close of “Damages” and Mariska Hargitay of “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.” Cranston is the likely winner in the Actor category, while Julianna Margulies of “The Good Wife” is a strong favorite for the Actress award. Outstanding Supporting Actor And Supporting Actress In A Drama Series The likely winners here are Terry O’Quinn for “Lost” and Christina Hendricks for “Mad Men.” Outstanding Comedy Series “Glee” has come out of its first season riding a wave of popularity and hype that landed it . But does the show have enough to beat out perennial favorites “The Office” and “30 Rock” and fend off competition from the other newcomer in this category, “Modern Family”? This is a tough one to call. Outstanding Lead Actor And Lead Actress In A Comedy Series “Glee” stars Matthew Morrison and Lea Michele have very tough competition in their respective categories. “30 Rock” star Alec Baldwin has won two Emmys for his portrayal of network exec Jack Donaghy. Baldwin’s co-star Tina Fey is also in the running, as are “Nurse Jackie” star Edie Falco, who won the Outstanding Lead Actress In A Drama Series three times for her work on “The Sopranos,” and leader of “The Office” Steve Carell. Outstanding Supporting Actor And Supporting Actress In A Comedy Series As beloved as Chris Colfer is on “Glee,” he’s a long shot against his seasoned competition, which includes “How I Met Your Mother” scene-stealer Harris and Eric Stonestreet of “Modern Family.” Jane Lynch is a lock to take Supporting Actress for her work on “Glee”; the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences likely engraved her name on the trophy when nominations were announced. Outstanding Reality — Competition Program Perennial Emmy favorite “The Amazing Race” will likely beat out ratings juggernauts “American Idol” and “Dancing With The Stars.” “Project Runway” and “Top Chef” are also up for honors. Who do you think will take home Emmys on Sunday night? Let us know in the comments! Related Photos The Year In ‘Glee’

The Pussycat Doll and ‘Dancing With the Stars’ champ will appear on the show in November. By Jocelyn Vena Nicole Scherzinger Photo: Bruce Glikas/FilmMagic Nicole Scherzinger is set to guest-star on the hit CBS show “How I Met Your Mother.” EW.com reports that the lead Pussycat Doll and “Dancing With the Stars” winner will play a vital part in telling the story of Robin’s (played by Cobie Smulders) days as a Canadian pop star, when she was known as Robin Sparkle. “It’s going to be a satisfying third chapter in the Robin Sparkles trilogy,” executive producer Craig Thomas said. “It’s a prequel to both ‘Let’s Go to the Mall’ and ‘Sandcastles in the Sand.’ ” Scherzinger will play Robin’s former pal, Jessica Glitter, who now hosts a Canadian talk show alongside former “Growing Pains” star Alan Thicke. “It’s the origin story of Robin Sparkles,” executive producer Carter Bays said. “You see where she came from.” The episode, titled “Glitter,” will air this November during sweeps. Last season a number of familiar faces popped up on “How I Met Your Mother,” including Jennifer Lopez and Carrie Underwood. In past seasons, everyone from Britney Spears to “Hills” stars Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt have appeared on the sitcom. Scherzinger burned up television screens last season on “Dancing With the Stars,” where she shimmied her way to winning the mirror-ball trophy. Following a recent shakeup in the band, she’s also currently hard at work on the next Pussycat Dolls album and worked with Andrew Lloyd Webber on his new play, “Love Never Dies,” a sequel to “The Phantom of the Opera.” Aside from taping her upcoming appearance on “How I Met Your Mother” and all her other projects, Scherzinger has been busy writing tons of music. “I don’t know if I’m gonna put [the new music out] under my name yet or if it’s going to be perfect for the Dolls,” she said. “It doesn’t matter. I just want to make great music for the fans. It’s going to be popular music, but I’m definitely going with a more rock, soul-inspired sound.” Related Artists Nicole Scherzinger

Will Jason Segel Be Fired From How I Met Your Mother Because Of This Quote?

Eight years is a long time to be chained to a network sitcom, especially when your career has blown up so much over the past few seasons that you are currently attached to star in big-budget features opposite Jack Black and Cameron Diaz, not to mention co-write The Greatest Muppet Movie Ever Made (really, that is the title). Just ask Jason Segel, who recently attempted to explain his dead-end How I Met Your Mother obligation to an interviewer and ended up sounding a bit resentful of the CBS series that helped make his name.

Sarah Chalke Gets Mad Love

Sorry, Minka Kelly fans, but Sarah Chalke is reportedly in talks with CBS to replace the Friday Night Lights actress in the comedy Mad Love . Tim Gunn Carries On In ‘The Smurfs Movie’

‘Project Runway’ mentor joins cast as an executive assistant at a cosmetics company. By Adam Rosenberg Tim Gunn Photo: Henry S. Dziekan III/ Getty Images For a movie about a bunch of little blue people, the cast of “The Smurfs Movie” is sure getting very big. The latest to join the cast is noted fashion expert and “Project Runway” mentor Tim Gunn. Variety reports that Gunn will play the role of an executive assistant at a major cosmetics company. Presumably, director Raja Gosnell will work out some way for Gunn to utter his “Runway” catchphrase, “Make it work,” to Tailor Smurf . The fashion guru joins a cast that already includes Neil Patrick Harris , “Glee” star Jayma Mays, Hank Azaria and Sofia Vergara, as well as the voice-acting talents of Katy Perry , Fred Armisen, George Lopez, Anton Yelchin, Paul Reubens, Alan Cumming, Jeff Foxworthy, Wolfgang Puck and Jonathan Winters. “Smurfs” shooting is under way right now in New York City. Just this week, MTV ran an image of Azaria decked out as Gargamel , the evil wizard who was driven on the cartoon by his mad desire to cook and eat the Smurfs. The movie will follow the diminutive blue people as they flee from their village after Gargamel locates it. They slip away through a magical portal and land smack in the middle of New York City’s Central Park. With Gargamel close behind, the Smurfs must find a way home before the wizard catches up with them. Gunn has appeared in guest roles on “Ugly Betty” and “How I Met Your Mother,” which also happens to star Harris. Gunn also hosts his own reality TV series on Bravo, “Tim Gunn’s Guide to Style.” “The Smurfs Movie” isn’t out until August 2011, but Gunn will be featured on the big screen long before then: He’ll be seen in the upcoming “Sex and the City 2,” which is out at the end of this month. Glee Creator Urges: Boycott Newsweek!

In last week’s edition of Newsweek , Ramin Setoodeh wrote an article that made one controversial statement and asked one controversial question: First, he said, gay actors cannot pull of straight roles. Then, he asked: Why is there no A-list gay movie star? Kristin Chenoweth fired back at the essay, citing Setoodeh’s examples of failed straight roles (e.g. Cynthia Nixon as Miranda in Sex and the City ) as “sloppy,” and referring to the entire piece as “bigoted and factually inaccurate.” Now, Glee creator Ryan Murphy has taken his critique of the article even further: he’s written an open letter, asking everyone to boycott Newsweek. In it, he says: This article is as misguided as it is shocking and hurtful. It shocks me because Mr. Setoodeh is himself gay. But what is the most shocking of all is that Newsweek went ahead and published such a blatantly homophobic article in the first place…and has remained silent in the face of ongoing (and justified) criticism. Would the magazine have published an article where the author makes a thesis statement that minority actors should only be allowed and encouraged to play domestics? I think not. Today, I have asked GLAAD president Jarrett Barrios to stand with me and others and ask for an immediate boycott of Newsweek magazine until an apology is issued to Sean Hayes and other brave out actors who were cruelly singled out in this damaging, needlessly cruel, and mind-blowingly bigoted piece. An apology should also be issued to all gay readers of the magazine…steelworkers, parents, accountants, doctors, etc…proud hardworking Americans who, if this article is to be believed, should only identify themselves as “queeny” people (a word used by Setoodeh in the article) who stand at the back of the bus and embrace an outdated decades old stereotype. Give me a call, Ramin… I’d love to hear from you. I’ll even give you a free copy of our Madonna CD, on which we cover “Open Your Heart,” a song you should play in your house and car on repeat. Our take on Setoodeh’s viewpoint? Putting aside homophobic rhetoric and anythong of that nature, it’s simply incorrect. Off the top of our heads, we can come up with numerous gay actors that are widely accepted in straight roles (Nixon, Neil Patrick Harris on How I Met Your Mother, Cherry Jones on 24 , Lily Tomlin on Damages ). It’s difficult to make a serious point of any kind when your thesis is misguided. What do you think about gay actors in straight roles? Do you have any problem taking them seriously?
