If You Can’t Talk About Race, Interracial Relationships Are Not For You

View original post here:

Source: Praise 102.5 Atlanta / Praise 102.5 Atlanta Someone please cue up Girl for Michelle Williams because it might be her turn to evaluate her relationship. We’ve all seen the viral clips of Michelle and her fiance Chad Johnson talking through a recent disagreement that turned ugly when Chad got offended by a racial comment made by Michelle. The former Destiny’s Child singer informed her fiance that he doesn’t understand how Black people talk because he’s White. All I heard from her were facts, but Chad quipped with a low blow and questioned whether she’d taken her medication. If you haven’t see it, take a look: Watching the exchange brought me to one conclusion: If you can’t openly discuss race and racial inequality without getting defensive, then you have absolutely no business being in an interracial relationship. Being in an interracial relationship means that these topics will pop up from time to time. If you can’t handle those talks with sensitivity, compassion, maturity, and respect, then you are doing your partner a deep disservice. When it comes to interracial relationships, trying to avoid the issue of race feels a lot like not fully accepting your partner for who they are. Discussions about race cannot be met with closed ears and an unwillingness to hear your partner’s concerns about the consequences of living in brown skin. Similarly, it must also be acknowledged that moments where the ethnic partner is thoroughly enjoying their culture are not anti-White. Considering Michelle’s history of depression, it was an incredibly cheap shot to take. Chad back peddled at first when Michelle opened up about their latest fight. He swore that he’d never usually “go there” with her and swiftly attempted to deflect. Chad then spouted the Color Blind Coalition’s charter, stating that he does not care what color a person is as long as everyone’s feelings are respected. Finally, he tried to argue that she owed him an apology for hurting his feelings. Not once did he bother to apologize for his handling of the situation. As we saw, Michelle basically outed Chad’s shortcomings in that department. Here’s the thing: Chad wants to marry a Black woman. Black people often talk about racial politics because it affects so much of our lives. Whether we’re talking about discrimination at work, voter suppression, and even police brutality–or whether we’re celebrating the culture and reminiscing about aspects of our community–race plays a huge role in the lives of non-White people. It would be nearly impossible for us to be in a relationship without ever speaking on racial matters (good or bad) because it underscores much of our experience. For the non-ethnic partner to expect that a person of color always has to defer to their sense of comfort as a function of the relationship is incredibly selfish. It’s a way of using privilege against someone they claim to love, and it puts unreasonable conditions on the affections exchanged. In that situation, they’re not fit to be in an interracial relationship because the relationship is not equitable, and it’s likely to come at the expense of the brown person in the pairing. Personally, I could not imagine having to tiptoe around certain aspects of my life in my own relationship. I’m married to a White man, and at no time have I ever felt the need to tone down my Blackness. At no time, have I ever felt like I couldn’t share my thoughts on racially charged matters because my husband would take it the wrong way. He sits down with me and we can talk it out, and it’s comforting to know that I have a partner who does not shy away from that. When I want to revel in my culture, it’s not an issue for him because he can appreciate why that matters to me. I don’t have to explain it to him ad infinitum. If anything, he’s very supportive of those moments and encourages them for me. He loves me in my entirety. I sincerely wish the same for all Black girls in interracial relationships because someone who cannot navigate the reality of your experience as a woman of color is not fully invested in you. Briana DeJesus is like lightning in a bottle. In fact, as she proved in a recent exclusive interview with The Hollywood Gossip , the mother of two can deliver the drama even when the cameras aren't rolling. Take a look: 1. Kenya Moore Gloats as The Real Housewives of Atlanta Ratings Plummet Without Her

The Real Housewives of Atlanta is back for Season 11. Unfortunately, ratings at the season premiere are lower than they’ve been in several years. Meanwhile, former Housewife Kenya Moore welcomed her first child … and she can’t help but smile. If you  watch  The Real Housewives of Atlanta  online , you know that the show has been going on as before. Kandi and Porsha are struggling to approximate friendship after previously feuding. NeNe is grappling with Gregg’s cancer battle. But Kenya Moore is missing. She’s no longer on the show. In real life, however, she recently gave birth to a precious preemie baby, Brooklyn Doris Daly. And on Sunday, Kenya shared this precious photo for the world to see: Kenya hasn’t shown her adorable baby’s face yet, but a precious baby hand is more than enough to tide over her fans. Following being diagnosed with preeclampsia, which caused her feet to swell, Kenya was given a C-section . Kenya, though certainly not  old  by any reasonable metric, is considered “old” for pregnancy, so she always knew that there would be risks. Fortunately, it seems that the C-section was a success. Kenya is recovering, and was even feeling healthy enough to go on a Target run (in a motorized scooter, to be clear). And at 5 pounds and 12 ounces, baby Brooklyn was technically within the “normal” range for baby weights, if very close to the low end of the spectrum. But one person did not find Kenya’s sweet mother-daughter hand photo endearing in the least. “I can’t wit the calculations on Sunday’s,” NeNe Leakes wrote on Instagram. She tagged her vague post: “#thethirstisreal #weseeyou #wacks–t” The implication that NeNe seemed to be making was that Kenya timed her photo in a shady manner. Perhaps, for example, Kenya showed off her baby’s hand to distract fans from her former show. Or maybe she did it to remind Bravo of the kind of content that they’re missing out on since she’s no longer on the show. Whatever it is that NeNe believes that Kenya is up to … it’s unclear why NeNe felt the need to comment. Some might suspect that NeNe is feeling insecure because of what some tabloids have described as a “ratings crash.” The season premiere of  The Real Housewives of Atlanta  brought in 1.93 million viewers. That made it the lowest rated season opener since Season 5. That said, relatively low ratings for a premiere aren’t necessarily a huge crash. it’s not  good  news, but they had about the same number of viewers as recently as April 1 of 2018. Bravo may be concerned, but we can’t imagine that they’re panicking. That said, NeNe may be worried — because she’s the show’s highest paid star. That said, some people can’t help but connect the dots. Kenya’s firing was certainly the biggest change between last season and this season. Now, Kenya has everything she wanted — a loving husband and a precious newborn baby. In the mean time,  The Real Housewives of Atlanta  has taken a downward turn from being Bravo’s highest rated show. It may not have been Kenya’s choice to go overboard, but it’s looking like she may have jumped ship at a smart time. Or maybe people are less interested now that she’s off the show. Not every Real Housewives series is going to last or click with all viewers. But we don’t think that it’s time to start singing  RHOA ‘s funeral dirge just yet. This season’s ratings may pick up. If not, there’s always next season. Probably Bravo would likely be reluctant to cancel, for a host of reasons. View Slideshow: The Real Housewives of Atlanta Season 11: All the Secrets… EXPOSED!

Lauren Swanson is Pregnant… Fans Think for One Very Odd Reason

It took a month into Lauren Swanson’s marriage to Josiah Duggar for the world to ask the only real question that matters when it comes to a new member of this latter family. Is she pregnant yet? Fans started pondering this possibility in early August, just weeks after Lauren and Josiah exchanged vows — but they had no real basis for the speculation. They just figured: Hey, these two are now married and have therefore had sex! A baby must be on the way! In fairness to those churning this particular rumor mill, this is often how the Duggars roll. They get married. They quickly procreate. They share cute photos of their newborn. And then they have a bunch more. Swanson and Duggar are sort of got married out of nowhere in late June, shocking fans by confirming they had tied the knot in Arkansas and leading many to presume they did so because… yup, you guessed it… … because Swanson was already pregnant. At this point, however, Swanson would be showing if that were the case — and she’s not, so it was a false claim at the time. Could it be true now, though?!? Might Swanson and Duggar be expecting their first child? A handful of social media users are convinced this is the case, although their reason for presuming so isn’t exactly based on very hard evidence. You see, Swanson has made her Pinterest Board private and… well… that’s it. She has made her Pinterest Board private and some folks are taking a pretty huge leap in thinking she made this move because she’s putting together some baby-related lists and doesn’t want the world to know just yet. “Maybe she has a bunch of baby boards now? Not sure why she’d hide all her boards, though,” one user wrote in response to seeing the above message. And another agreed: “Maybe she’s pregnant and made it private! Idk if you can do that though…” There was also this similar opinion; “Oohh. Hhmm wonder if she’s pinning baby stuff. You know girl is probably pregnant. She’s 19 and probably fertile AF.” And then another person simply wrote: “Preggo!” This alleged proof of Swanson’s pregnancy is flimsy at best, but, hey, it’s possible. If she isn’t expecting now, she probably will be in the near future. All we know for certain at the moment is that she and Josiah are very happy to be husband and wife. “What a joy it is to be husband and wife!” Josiah and Lauren told People Magazine this summer, adding shortly after their wedding ceremony: “We are so thankful the Lord has brought us to this place and we can’t wait to begin our journey as husband and wife!” Yeah, yeah, that’s great and all. We’re very happy for you guys. Can you just go make a baby now please? View Slideshow: Duggars Hint at New, “Budding” Romance … Who’s Getting Married Next?!

90 Day Fiance: Colt and Larissa Fight Leads to Domestic Battery Arrest

5 Things We Learned From The Midterm Elections

B lack candidates were instrumental in helping the Democrats win the U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday, enabling Democrats to end one-party rule and turn up the heat on President Donald Trump . But it was a mixed result, with disappointments in places like Florida where Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum lost in a close race for governor. At the same time, several Black candidates made history, like Ayanna Pressley who become Massachusetts’ first Black woman in Congress . Some of the elections were plagued with a number of instances of attempts to suppress the Black vote, including a concerted effort in Georgia ahead of Election Day that continued on Tuesday . See Also: ‘Dirty Tricks’: Stacey Abrams Voters Won’t Be Denied As Brian Kemp Rigs Voting Machines Here are five takeaways from the 2018 midterm elections: Black women candidates are winners While some African-American female candidates like Jahana Hayes were victorious and others such as  Vangie Williams came up short, they are all winners. Some of these women made history by winning competitive primary elections, as they overcame racism, gender bias and obstacles within the Democratic Party. Congratulations to Jahana Hayes, the former national teacher of the year who just became the first Black women ever elected to Congress in Connecticut. #ElectionNight #Midterms2018 #RepresentTheVote https://t.co/BFuTdEpje8 — NewsOne (@newsone) November 7, 2018 Racism was an effective GOP tool The Republican base responded to racist dog whistles in several elections. Ron DeSantis infamously warned Florida voters not to “ monkey this up ” by electing his rival Andrew Gillum, who is African American. Within days, Florida residents began to receive racist robocalls that mocked Gillum. Stacey Abrams was also targeted with racist robocalls in Georgia shortly after Trump called her unqualified to be governor of Georgia before holding a rally for her GOP rival Brian Kemp . “I heard people were making racist robocalls in my name against Stacey Abrams, who I am one hundred percent for, in Georgia,” Oprah said on Instagram. “I just want to say: Jesus don’t like ugly … And we know what to do about that: vote. Tomorrow show up and show out, and vote.” pic.twitter.com/CvK5VP60Az — Kyle Griffin (@kylegriffin1) November 6, 2018   Triumph for anti-Trump activism “This was a remarkable wave of grassroots activism that swept across the country — with women and people of color leading the way. From a U.S. House of Representatives that reflects the will of the people to the passage of Amendment 4 in Florida, which restored voting rights to convicted felons, this election was an overwhelming rebuke of Trump and Trumpism, and a show of support for candidates who look like America and campaigned on a bold, forward-looking and inclusive vision,” said NAACP President Derrick Johnson .   Vigilance needed to combat voter suppression Fighting against voter suppression is an ongoing struggle that requires tenacity. Georgia emerged as the epicenter for voting rights, where activists filed lawsuits against Kemp to ensure the votes of African Americans were counted. Kemp desperately used every trick in the book to win his election. “Voter suppression played a huge role in the silencing of the political voices of the Black community and all people of color,” the NAACP president said. “As we saw in Georgia and Tennessee, Republicans engaged in a massive voter suppression strategy that has included further rolling back the Voting Rights Act.” GA Secretary of State Brian Kemp stooped to new low in his ongoing efforts to keep black people from voting for ⁦ @staceyabrams ⁩. Voting machines, which fall under his responsibility, were delivered to majority black precincts without any power cords. https://t.co/IxvD4Usoo5 — Jon Cooper (@joncoopertweets) November 6, 2018   Black folks will turn out for midterm elections Black voter turnout was high in 2008 and 2012 when President Barack Obama was running. The numbers tumbled in 2016 . It was unclear what would happen in 2018. Early exit polls suggested that African-Americans showed up in strong numbers for the midterms, according to ABC News .
