‘Skyfall’ Surprise: Naomie Harris Talks About Her New Cutting-Edge Role In The Bond Franchise

If you weren’t one of the scores of moviegoers who contributed to Skyfall’ s $90 million box office take  this past weekend and you’re still in spoiler-avoidance mode, then you should stop reading right here.  If you did see the movie over the weekend, then you’re probably still thinking about the surprises that Skyfall   holds for James Bond fans. Key among them is the reveal in the movie’s final scenes that Naomie Harris , who opens the movie by accidentally shooting Daniel Craig ‘s Bond, is the franchise’s sexy new Ms. Moneypenny. In an interview with Movieline , Harris talks about becoming the first black woman to join James Bond’s MI6 support team (Colin Salmon played Chief of Staff Charles Robinson in Tomorrow Never Dies , The World Is Not Enough and Die Another Day ) and how, after playing a zombie-killing bad-ass in 28 Days Later and a secret agent in Skyfall , she’s well-equipped for the apocalypse. Movieline: When you took the role of Eve in Skyfall, were you aware that you were going to be revealed as Moneypenny and what that would entail?  You are clearly going to be in other Bond movies as a result of this. Harris:  Let’s see, who knows!  But yes, when I took the role, I was told about the role fully. And that was part of the reason that it really excited me. I knew that my character was going on this amazing journey — and in a really modern way, which is fantastic. You are the first black woman to be cast as a member of the MI6 support team and, let’s presume, in a recurring role in the franchise.  Have you thought much about the cultural significance of that? I was brought up in Britain, and I’m very proud of my Britishness and my culture. And Bond is a big part of that. So, I’m very aware of the significance of this role and being in a Bond movie. I don’t take it lightly at all. Barbara and Sam and Michael auditioned actors of all different ethnicities around the world, and there was no sense of,  we just want a black person for this role.  I love that kind of open casting. It’s really brilliant and speaks so highly of them. It’s fundamentally who they are.  They’re so progressive. They were looking for the best person for the role. [Smiles] Exactly. Related Story:  ‘Skyfall’ Producers On 007’s Post-9/11 Progressive Streak & Idris Elba Rumors: Could Bond Be Black, Gay, Or A Woman? Bérénice Marlohe  told me that she found the concept of being a Bond girl very abstract.  Is it different for you because James Bond is so firmly rooted in your culture? I don’t have a problem with the label. I don’t necessarily think it’s relevant anymore, but I don’t have a problem with it.  If that’s what people want to refer to me as, then I’m more than happy. [Being a Bond girl] means glamor, sexiness, classiness and having an enigmatic quality. It means all good things really. But I do think they’re the building blocks for more. So, I would hate to be just that.  That’s the starting point, basically.  You’ve got to have so much more. You’ve also got to be extremely fit. I was surprised by all of the physical training you had to undergo for the role. Were you aware of this going in or did it surprise you?  Sam did say to me, “It’s an action role, but you’ve done action stuff before. You’re used to that.”  And in the audition, I was like, “Yeah, yeah, yeah, I’ll do anything. I can ride. I can shoot.” So I kind of agreed to it, and then I didn’t realize how intense it was going to be. It was two months, five days a week, two hours a day working with a personal trainer who did running and circuit training and yoga. Then it was three days a week on the gun range: machine guns, Walther PPK’s, sniper rifes. Then it was two days a week doing stunt driving.  And once a week with the stunt guys doing combat training as well.  So, for a girl who does not exercise, that was a big physical change. And I have to say it was really tough in the beginning, but by the end of it, I got used to it. I loved it, actually. Do you own a gun?  No! I certainly do not own a gun, although I went through my bag the other day and discovered that I had a dummy gun in there that we used while we were filming. Good thing you didn’t go to the airport with that. I know! I definitely would have gotten arrested. Between 28 Days Later and Skyfall , you are clearly prepared for the apocalypse.  I am. I’m the woman to be with if there’s any crisis going down. What are you doing next in between your Bond films? I finished Bond and then two days later, I flew to South Africa to play Winnie Mandela in Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom .  I finished that a month ago. So, I’m going to do this tour for Skyfall , which is over a month long, and then I’m having a break.  It’s a year of non-stop work. Have you talked to Danny Boyle  about doing any more work with him?   I haven’t, but I would always work with Danny because he’s an amazing director.  I really credit him with giving me the career that I have.  He’s the guy who — when I had just left drama school — took a risk on me and cast me in 28 Days Later , which changed my life and my career. And then 10 years later, he was the guy who cast me in Frankenstein on the Olivier stage when I hadn’t done theater for 10 years. And that’s how I got Bond, which has brought my career to a whole new level. So I would always work with Danny. Have you ever thought about directing?  No. I think that if I was going to do anything it would be writing. That’s what my Mum does. [Editor’s Note; Harris’ mother is sitcom writer Lisselle Kayla.]  That’s what I grew up around. But at the moment, I have no real interest in that. I always imagine myself retiring and writing somewhere in the countryside. Let’s see. Iran A Possible Oscar No-Show After Boycott Threat

Even as Iran’s boisterous leader (but not supreme leader) President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is in New York for the opening of the U.N. Assembly this week, and already causing some local controversy here staying at a luxury Manhattan hotel, his country is apparently opening a new front in its anti-U.S. proclivities – The Oscars. An Iranian official said his country should boycott the 2013 Academy Awards and not submit a film for Best Foreign-language consideration due to the anti-Islam video Innocence of Muslims which rocketed the Muslim world since its debut on YouTube earlier this month. Iranian cinema has won accolades at festivals around the world for some time now. The government has jailed various filmmakers there, most notably Jafar Panahi ( Crimson Gold ). Last year, fellow Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi won the Academy Award for Best Foreign-Language film for A Separation , a first for a filmmaker from that country. But now, Iran’s filmmaking community may be shut out of the Oscars – at least in the foreign-language category – if the country’s head of its government-controlled cinema agency has his way. Javad Shamaghdari said the committee that oversees selection of Iran’s choice for the Oscar category should “avoid” doing so, according to A.P. , which quoted Iran’s semi-official Mehr news agency. The committee had already identified Ye Habbeh Ghand ( A Cube of Sugar ), which centers on a family wedding that turns into a funeral after the groom’s relative dies, to represent Iran’s choice at the Oscars in February. The government still needs to give its consent for the title to move forward. Shamaghdari said the a boycott of the Oscars should take place until the Academy denounces Innocence of Muslims , the once-little noticed video that has resulted in major clashes outside U.S. missions throughout the Islamic world, killing at least 51 people including the U.S. ambassador to Libya. Shamaghdari has in the past pulled Iranian films from festivals worldwide. After Farhadi’s win earlier this year, Iranian officials praised the Academy Award triumph for A Separation , especially since it took the prize over an Israeli film also vying in the category. Some nationalists, however, denounced what they saw as a less than rosy view of Iranian life portrayed in the film, which involves a marriage falling apart. [ Source: A.P. ]

How Do You Like Them Veins, Bub? First Official Look At Buff Hugh Jackman From The Wolverine

D’you mind if he puts his Adamantium claws around you? Twentieth Century-Fox has released the first official photo of an extremely lean and ripped Hugh Jackman in James Mangold’s film adaption of Frank Miller and Chris Claremont’s 1982 limited comic series classic,   The Wolverine.   The superhero’s sinewy look appears to jibe with comments that Jackman made to Empire magazine that he had Robert De Niro’s unhinged performance as Max Cady in  Martin Scorsese’s 1991 remake of Cape Fear a s a benchmark for his performance. “You were terrified of that character from the moment he took his shirt off and you saw all the tats; you know he was this coiled spring that would rip your head off, no matter how nonchalant he acted. That’s who Wolverine is. I always thought of him as being lean, animalistic, not necessarily pretty. He has all this berserkery, and he’s terrifying when he loses all reason in blind rage.” Set in Japan, Logan/Wolverine becomes romantically involved with a woman whose hand in marriage is promised to another man.Lots of claw and swordplay follows as his refusal to give up the woman he loves leads to clashes with the woman’s father, her  brothers and Silver Samurai. The film is set to be released July 23, 2013 Follow Frank DiGiacomo on Twitter. Follow Movieline on Twitter.

Here is the first image from Sofia Coppola’s forthcoming The Bling Ring , which features Emma Watson leading a cabal of young thieves to the rich and famous. Clearly she means business! Are those Lindsay’s Lohan’s shades? Megan Fox’s shoes? Paris Hilton ‘s Frappuccino? Watson talked to EW (which debuted the image) about her preparations for the role, which are about as Method as you can get under the circumstances: “I just watched a ton of reality TV,” she says. “I was doing an English course [at Brown University]. So I would go from reading Virginia Woolf to [watching] Kim Kardashian. I kind of loved it, this mix of super-high and super-low culture. I think it was a nice balance.” Poor thing. Anyway, joining Watson above are [L-R] Taissa Farmiga, Israel Broussard, Katie Chang and Claire Julien. The Bling Ring has yet to score a release date, though a fall-festival run seems likely, starting with Venice. Developing… [ EW via JoBlo ]

Glenn Danzig’s Wolverine ‘Wouldn’t Have Been as Gay’

I’m a little late to this , but what’s that famous saying? A day without the horror-punk icon Glenn Danzig clearing up years of speculation about his flirtation with X-Men is like a day without sunshine? Something like that. And it just gets better from there: “It wouldn’t have been as gay. Actually, [Hugh Jackman] wasn’t the first choice. They hired Dougray Scott. He had a falling out with the director, and then they hired Hugh Jackman. I’m glad I didn’t do it. It was terrible.” Anyway, what Danzig really wants to do is… you know : “I would love to do some filming and directing before I’m gone out the door. I mean dead.” [ LA Weekly ]

Rise of the Guardians Trailer: Santa’s Putting a Team Together

First things first: Rise of the Guardians is an animated adventure, but it’s not a sequel to that owl movie . I know, it’s very confusing. What’s more, it’s about Santa Claus — a brawny, tatted-up Santa who pulls a Sam Jackson and assembles a superteam to fight evil and protect the children of the world. The other fantasy heroes called to duty? The Tooth Fairy, the Easter Bunny, and the Sandman. It’s pretty much The Avengers for kids, only I’m willing to bet it’ll have a better soundtrack . Hey-oh! Here’s another difference that sets Rise of the Guardians apart from most animated adventures and superhero flicks: It’s scripted by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire ( Rabbit Hole ). How many kids pics can make that claim? Watch the trailer in HD over at Apple . So, we’ve got Hugh Jackman as the Easter Bunny, Isla Fisher as the Tooth Fairy, and I’m assuming Chris Pine provides the voice of the Sandman, though IMdb lists him as Jack Frost. That said, there’s no sight of Jack Frost herein to be seen, but the Sandman gets a ton of face time, so…? Besides, this magical golden-haired little man totally looks like Pine. And of course, leading the team is the voice of Alec Baldwin as Santa. He’s doing his best Gerard Butler here, and the result is just odd-enough to the ear to suggest that Santa isn’t quite from anywhere from ’round these parts. The North Pole by way of Scotland, perhaps? Anyway, the CG animation is pretty and all (DreamWorks alumnus Peter Ramsey co-directs with writer William Joyce, adapting Joyce’s own forthcoming books; Guillermo del Toro is executive producer) but there’s not really anything here that hooks me. Even Jude Law’s evil villain Pitch, the Nightmare King, is kind of vague and yawnworthy in his evilness. Rise of the Guardians hits theaters Nov. 21, just in time to rake in that family holiday-moviegoing booty. The official synopsis goes a little something like this: [ Rise of the Guardians ] stars Chris Pine, Alec Baldwin, Hugh Jackman, Isla Fisher and Jude Law. More than a collection of the well-known childhood legends, Rise of the Guardians is an epic adventure that tells the story of a group of heroes – each with extraordinary abilities. When an evil spirit known as Pitch lays down the gauntlet to take over the world, the immortal Guardians must join forces for the first time to protect the hopes, beliefs and imagination of children all over the world. Verdict: Too nice, and not naughty (or interesting) enough. Yet. [via Apple ]
