‘Hunger Games’ Claims Best Fight At MTV Movie Awards

Katniss and Peeta’s battle against the cruel and cunning Cato beats out ‘Harry Potter’ and more in Sunday night’s most violent category. By Josh Wigler and John Mitchell Alexander Ludwig and Josh Hutcherson win at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Two killers against one — not exactly the fairest of odds, no, but it certainly sets the stage for one of the coolest fights we’ve seen on screen all year long. It’s only fitting, then, that “The Hunger Games” took home Best Fight at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards Sunday night (June 3), gifting both Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson with their second Golden Popcorn statuettes of the night, and bad boy Alexander Ludwig with his first. The award was presented by “Prometheus” co-stars Charlize Theron and Michael Fassbender, who thought his Irish heritage and famous and much-discussed manliness meant he could handle the duties himself. “I was thinking since I’m Irish, I would just handle this one,” Fassbender rationalized. “Yeah, you know, fighting Irish and all that. And considering you’re a girl and all that.” Unfortunately for Fassbender, Theron wasn’t having it, and decided to show him exactly how tough even the most glamorous girl can be. The poor guy didn’t get past “And the nominees are” before she’d knocked him to the floor with just a handful of swift (mock) blows. For his part, Fassbender played the part of the victim well, writhing on the floor in faux pain before working his way back on his feet. Just as the “Twilight” films have dominated the Best Kiss category over the past several Movie Awards shows, so too is “Hunger Games” poised to own the Best Fight arena in the years to come. After all, these movies are about unwitting contestants battling to the death — every film from “Catching Fire” to the two-part “Mockingjay” will feature scenes of brutal violence, with lead actors Lawrence and Hutcherson often on the front lines of the action. “Wow, this is really cool,” Hutcherson, who also scored the prize for Best Male Performance , told the audience. “I’ve always loved doing stunt work [and] producers have always hated me for that because they’ve never want me to do it.” Hutcherson and Ludwig’s fellow Best Fight winner, Best Female Performance winner Jennifer Lawrence, was unable to make it to the awards because she is in Prague filming “Serena.” “We were filming ’til like six in the morning that night so it was an amazing experience,” Ludwig added before thanking “Hunger Games” fans for all their support. Of course, you won’t see Ludwig in any future “Hunger Games” fights — his character, the cruel and cunning Cato, was the ill-fated loser of the Movie Awards-winning fight. But District 2 supporters, never fear: You’ll get to see the man who plays Cato again very soon when he makes an unlikely “Twilight” crossover with Taylor Lautner in next year’s “Grown Ups 2.” Who knows? Perhaps that mash-up could be eligible for Best Fight in a couple of years! The 2012 MTV Movie Awards are officially under way! Russell Brand At Movie Awards: His Nine Funniest Jokes

From Twilight to Teen Mom, no pop-culture stone was left unturned. By Terri Schwartz Russell Brand hosts the 2012 MTV Movie Awards Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images UNIVERSAL CITY, California — Russell Brand might have to host every MTV awards show from here on out! The 2012 MTV Movie Awards were immediately off to a good start thanks to Brand’s , and he kept the jokes rolling throughout the rest of the two-hour-long show. In honor of Brand’s sharp witticisms, we’ve put together a list of his nine best jokes that kept us laughing long after he finished telling them. Twilight! Hunger Games! When Brand first walked out onto the Movie Awards stage and started yelling, ” Twilight! Hunger Games!” we figured he was off Andy Samberg. Instead, as he said later in the monologue, he was using them because “these words generate goodwill.” They certainly did, as he used them repeatedly over the course of the night. It’s the End of the World as We Know It “Tonight is an important ceremony because according to the Mayans, the world will end in December this year,” Brand pointed out. “If Earth hurtles into the sun and humanity is destroyed, we will all say as one: We had the MTV Movie Awards 2012 and it was worth it! ” Yes we can, and yes we will. Justin Bieber Is the Man The first pop-culturally relevant moment Brand brought up in his opening monologue was Justin Bieber’s recent attack on a member of the paparazzi. “Justin Bieber beat up a paparazzi. Well done, Justin!” he said. Brand went on to say that he didn’t think he’d ever be able to hit Biebs if he fought him because the 18-year-old is “so pretty” that “even if he was attacking me, I think I would do a little orgasm.” Well, to each his own. Kann-Yay and Kim Brand was quick to thank Kim Kardashian for making his short-lived marriage to Katy Perry not seem so bad in the scheme of things, but he then went on to beg the “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” star and her new boyfriend Kanye West — whose first name he repeatedly mispronounced ” Kann -Yay” — to make a sex tape. “I think of Kim Kardashian as the Stanley Kubrick of sex tapes,” Brand said. “They’re always brilliant, but he only does one a decade.” Brand’s Special “Grease” Tribute Nothing was off limits during the Movie Awards, not even John Travolta’s recent sex scandal . After saying that “Rock of Ages” is the best movie since “Grease,” Brand said he honored that film by giving Travolta a massage. “He needed it, man. He was so stiff, I’m telling ya!” Brand said. Michael Fassbender and His Penis He claimed he never noticed Fassbender’s “huge, engorged talent as I was staring at his massive co–.” That must have been why he decided the “Prometheus” star was going to be the next celebrity he married following hosting an MTV awards show. Sorry, Katy! Taking Advantage of Charlie Sheen’s Old Addictions Charlie Sheen was a great sport during Brand’s opening monologue, especially since the Brit repeatedly took jabs at the “Anger Management” star’s recent problems. “I’ve taped a bottle of Hennessy and a gram of coke under your chair. In case I start going crazy, just nick it and do a couple of lines. Release the tiger blood hero!” Brand said to resounding laughter. Our New Host: Julianne Hough’s Nephew One of the best parts of the night came when a behind-the-scenes shot showed Brand coaching Julianne Hough’s nephew and date for the night to replace him as host. According to Brand, all you need to do to be a great Movie Awards host is talk about farts a lot . And the cutest part is that it was all improvised “! “Teen Mom” Vs. “Teen Wolf” As you probably realized once the 2012 MTV Movie Awards wrapped, the show wasn’t followed by “Teen Mom,” but rather by the season-two premiere of “Teen Wolf.” Whoops! We can’t tell if his gibes at “Teen Mom” instead of “Wolf” were intentional or a mistake, but we still can’t get over his joke, “Do stay tuned after the show for the new season of Teen Mom, where pregnant women are laughed at for money!” Jaw-dropping, heart-pounding, gut-busting moments galore. MTV Movie Awards Go Live Tonight! Who Will Win Big?

The Girl on Fire and the Boy Who Lived are destined for Golden Popcorn greatness, while big things are in store for ‘Dark Knight Rises’ and ‘Magic Mike’ fans as well. By Josh Wigler Jennifer Lawrence in “The Hunger Games” Photo: Lionsgate UNIVERSAL CITY, California — Happy MTV Movie Awards day, and may the odds be ever in your favor! You have no shortage of films and stars to root for when tuning into the big show tonight (June 3) at 9 p.m. ET, and that only makes the decisions harder. How can you possibly choose between supporting the Boy Who Lived’s last night at the Movie Awards and Katniss Everdeen’s first time in the arena? Too much pressure! Still, as in every competition, there will be winners and losers at this year’s show, with plenty of cause for triumph and heartbreak. And while we’re still hours away from knowing exactly who those victors are, we’ve got some sneaking suspicions about who will wind up owning the night. Keep reading for our predictions: “The Hunger Games” Before Iron Man and the rest of “The Avengers” sucked all the air out of the box office, 2012’s biggest commercial titan was the Girl on Fire. Tonight at the Movie Awards, Katniss doesn’t have to worry about Earth’s mightiest heroes — only Captain America and Thor are nominated for Best Hero , and it will take a miracle to boost them to the top — and can instead focus on main rivals “Bridesmaids” and “Harry Potter.” Fans have rallied behind “Hunger Games” in a massive way over the past year, and with a leading nine nominations to its name, the odds are most certainly in this movie’s favor for ruling the show tonight. “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” This is Harry’s final time to shine at the Movie Awards. As the fourth highest-grossing picture of all time, it’s safe to say that there are more than a few fans hoping for some good old-fashioned “Deathly Hallows” domination. Best Cast should be a lock for “Potter,” if only to acknowledge the phenomenal work of scenery-chewers Alan Rickman and Ralph Fiennes. It’s neck-and-neck between Potter and Katniss for Best Hero, but we’re placing our money on the Boy Wizard. And a Movie of the Year win is not out of the question, either. It has a huge obstacle to overcome in the increasingly hot “Hunger Games,” but as Lord Voldemort learned the hard way, you can never put Potter down for the count. “The Dark Knight Rises” Fans No matter who you’re rooting for at the Movie Awards, it’s the fans who will walk away the winners — Batman fans in particular. Christopher Nolan, Christian Bale, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Gary Oldman will all be on hand to present exclusive “Dark Knight Rises” footage at the show, in case you haven’t heard. Though we’re still in the dark regarding what exactly we’ll see, Movie Awards director Hamish Hamilton has seen the top-secret footage, and he’s “telling you, it’s good.” Expect this footage to be the talk of the town (or at least the Twitterverse) long after the show ends. Shirtless-Men Enthusiasts Another someone with an outside shot at dominating the Movie Awards conversation tonight is Channing Tatum, who finds himself nominated for multiple awards, including Best Kiss and Best Hero. Don’t count on him winning either of those awards — the former is all “Twilight,” and the latter is a battle of the bows and wands — but who needs a Golden Popcorn statuette when you have abs to put Taylor Lautner to shame? There’s growing buzz that Tatum is going to bring some of his “Magic Mike” shirtless magic to Movie Awards viewers tonight, so if you’re a fan of hot men sans clothes, you might be this year’s biggest winner. Russell Brand Finally, hats off to the man who’s going to keep the trains powered by farts tonight: Russell Brand, host of the 2012 MTV Movie Awards. Mark Wahlberg’s threats aside, we’re very confident Brand is going to absolutely tear it up at the show this year, if his past performances as host of the VMAs are any indication. Besides, Brand is allowed to do whatever he wants tonight — group sex , anyone? Head over to MovieAwards.MTV.com to cast your vote for Best Hero and Best Movie now! 2011 Movie Awards: Rob Smooches Taylor And More!

We look back at last year’s biggest moments before the MTV Movie Awards go live tonight at 9 p.m. ET/PT. By Kara Warner Robert Pattinson kisses Taylor Lautner at the 2011 MTV Movie Awards Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage UNIVERSAL CITY, California — All week long, we’ve been getting you pumped up for the 2012 MTV Movie Awards with performer interviews, behind-the-scenes reveals and much more. We are soclose to show time, you can almost hear the squeals coming from inside the Gibson Amphitheatre. While we await the start of our “Punk’d Movie Awards Pre-Party” at 8 p.m. tonight and the snazzy red-carpet arrivals, let’s take a moment to walk down the memory lane of last year’s action-packed extravaganza: A Host With the Most “Saturday Night Live” funnyman Jason Sudeikis proved to be as adept in awards-show hosting as he is with being a chameleon-esque comic with his various characters on “SNL.” Sudeikis kept his jokes light and fun, with a couple of well-placed jabs at 2011 newsmaker Arnold Schwarzenegger and the “Twilight” cast. Unsolicited Smooches and Groping 1. Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart have dominated the Best Kiss category for the past three years and delivered their best acceptance speech yet last year when Pattinson decided not to kiss Stewart and instead went running into the audience to plant a wet one on his co-star Taylor Lautner. 2. When “Friends with Benefits” co-stars Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake walked out to present the award for Best Male Performance, no one guessed that their presentation would include a mutual groping of Kunis’ boobs and Timberlake’s nether regions for everyone to see, but they did, and that moment lives on in infamy. The “Deathly Hallows, Part 2” Clip The most magical moment of last year’s broadcast was an exclusive and highly anticipated preview of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2.” Potter fans were treated to an emotionally charged sneak peek at the final film in the blockbuster franchise with the debut of an explosive new clip. Jim Carrey We can always count on Jim Carrey to deliver a memorable moment when he attends the Movie Awards. There’s his unforgettable appearance in 1999 when he had everyone fooled with a clever disguise, and last year, Carrey brought down the house with a perfect blend of innovation and comedy via his green suit that featured a series of random and inappropriate images on it while Carrey introduced the Foo Fighters. The Foo Fighters The performance slot at the MTV Movie Awards is one of the most coveted and sought-after for artists new and old. For last year’s marquee act, we enlisted one of the biggest acts in the business and a band with a storied history with MTV: the Foo Fighters, who rocked the house with their rousing live rendition of “Walk.” Head over to MovieAwards.MTV.com to cast your vote for Best Hero and Best Movie now! Katniss Vs. Hermione: Who Is Queen Of Movie Awards?

Emma Stone, Kristen Wiig and Rooney Mara are also up for Best Female Performance tonight! By Kara Warner Jennifer Lawrence in “The Hunger Games” Photo: Lionsgate If you like your leading ladies with a touch of chutzpah, a natural survival instinct and great comedic timing, the nominees for Best Female Performance at this year’s 2012 MTV Movie Awards are right up your alley. Here’s a look at your five lovely nominees: Emma Stone, “Crazy, Stupid, Love” Emma Stone has quickly become America’s sweetheart, further solidified by her just plain likable performance in the ensemble romantic comedy “Crazy, Stupid, Love.” Not to mention her other Movie Award-nominated moment, in which her rain-soaked character gets exactly what she wants: one of the year’s steamiest onscreen kisses from heartthrob Ryan Gosling. Emma Watson, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” The fact that the “Harry Potter” movies were able to keep the same actors in their roles for eight movies over the course of 10 years deserves some sort of historical award, let alone its Movie Awards recognition over the years. Emma Watson’s dedicated and fan-loved years of service to Hermione Granger are everything the Best Female Performance award is all about. Jennifer Lawrence, “The Hunger Games” From the moment Jennifer Lawrence was announced as Katniss Everdeen, the pressure was on the Oscar-nominated actress to deliver on millions of fans’ hopes, dreams and general love for Suzanne Collins’ respected, role-model-worthy heroine. The fact that the film went on to totally dominate the box office is due in large part to Lawrence’s compelling, award-worthy performance. Kristen Wiig, “Bridesmaids” Fans of “Saturday Night Live” have known the scope of Kristen Wiig’s comedic chops for years, along with those who loved her scene-stealing moments in movies like “Knocked Up” and “MacGruber,” but it wasn’t until the release of “Bridesmaids” last summer that the entire nation fell in love with Wiig’s talents, both her acting and writing. Rooney Mara, “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” One look at Rooney Mara as Lisbeth Salander in “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” and you can see the actress’ commitment to the role, without her uttering a single word. Mara’s transformation is as remarkable as her compelling, calculated and cold take on the brilliant hacker/ master of revenge/ mystery solver extraordinaire. Andy Samberg Will Miss ‘So Many Things’ About ‘SNL’

‘I’ll definitely miss … being able to do comedy on such a storied show,’ Samberg tells MTV News about his ‘Saturday Night Live’ exit. By Josh Wigler Andy Samberg Photo: MTV News Andy Samberg’s announcement that he’ll no longer be a part of “Saturday Night Live” starting next season surprised precisely no one. The comedian’s possible exit had been rumored for months, with buzz recently reaching a boiling point thanks to the closing lyrics of “Lazy Sunday 2,” his final Digital Short: “On these New York streets I hone my fake rap penmanship/ That’s how it began, and that’s how I’mma finish it.” But even though Samberg is walking away after a seven-season run, don’t think the comedian arrived at the decision easily. MTV News spoke with Samberg and his co-star (and fellow “SNL” alum) Adam Sandler as they promoted “That’s My Boy,” and the Lonely Island artist revealed that there’s a lot he’ll miss about working on the show, his colleagues most of all. “The people and the friends, definitely,” Samberg told MTV News ahead of the Movie Awards on Sunday night. “I’ve been saying it a lot — I’m going to miss all of my friends and the people I work with. I love them all so much, and I’m hoping to stay in touch with them.” That said, Samberg feels very strongly about the choice to depart the New York-based late-night comedy series. “Over seven years, that show is like — and [Sandler] knows — it’s like going to war or being on a sports team,” he said. “It’s just everyone working towards this common goal at full speed. When you lift your head up from that and go out into the world, you kind of realize, you’ll always be nicely shell-shocked in a way that only the people who did it with you can understand. I’ll definitely miss having such an amazing outlet and being able to do comedy on such a storied show that everyone pays attention to, but … ” “But now you can do it on YouTube,” Sandler interrupted. “Right,” Samberg laughed. “Now it’s straight to YouTube.” Sandler, like Samberg, certainly knows what it’s like to walk away from “SNL.” After leaving the show in 1995, he found enormous success through movies like “Billy Madison,” “Happy Gilmore” and many more. With Sandler’s many achievements in mind, we asked the Happy Madison founder what he thought of Samberg’s decision to say so long to Saturday night. “He’s doing it all right,” said the comedian. “This guy cares about being a good person first, and I love that about him. He’s a hard-working fool when he wants to be, and he’s really a smart, talented and great guy. I know he’s going to do everything he wants to do. “I was aggressive back in the day. I was driven and needed to get my movies made and blah blah blah. He’s less nutty about it,” Sandler continued. “He’s a very passionate and smart guy who knows about what should come first, and that’s life. Right? Something like that?” “Yeah,” Samberg enthusiastically replied. “Right!” Head over to MovieAwards.MTV.com to vote for your favorite flicks now! How Did Jennifer Lawrence Get An Arrow In The Head?

Get an exclusive first look at ‘Hunger Games’ star’s MTV Movie Awards appearance; short film producer Jordan Rubin fills us in! By Kara Warner Photo: MTV That old adage about a picture being worth a thousand words is particularly appropriate for this sneak peek of “Hunger Games” star Jennifer Lawrence’s appearance in a short film set to debut during the MTV Movie Awards on Sunday (June 3). The photo clearly shows Lawrence with an arrow through her head, and given her unimpressed, annoyed expression when the pic was snapped, she doesn’t look too pleased about the situation. But not to worry: The arrow through her head is all for the sake of Movie Awards comedy, for which Lawrence was totally game. MTV News recently caught up with Movie Awards short film producer Jordan Rubin to get the behind-the-scenes scoop about how Lawrence came to be involved. “The idea generated from this year being the year of archery,” Rubin said. “Archery has really come back in a big way, so it seemed like a good thing to do as a jumping-off point for some comedy. “You have ‘The Hunger Games,’ Jeremy Renner [as Hawkeye] in ‘Avengers,’ ‘Game of Thrones,’ ‘Snow White and the Huntsman,’ also ‘Brave’ is coming out,” Rubin added. “It’s good comedy fodder, and Jen totally got it. We were so happy she made time.” According to Rubin, the short film revolves around an archery coach who is not necessarily liked by a lot of people in the industry. It features Joel McHale and a cameo from Lawrence. “[Lawrence] was really funny and gave us a lot of different options and was great at the comedy,” Rubin said. Does ‘Twilight’ Have A Lip-Lock On The Movie Awards?

We’ll see if RPattz and KStew nab their fourth prize over ‘The Vow,’ ‘Potter,’ ‘Crazy, Stupid, Love’ and ‘Hunger Games’ on Sunday. By Kara Warner Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson in “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1” Photo: Summit Entertainment This year’s Best Kiss nominees are as diverse as they are titillating. Whether the smooch’s setting was rain-soaked, in a cave, seven years in the making or post-marriage, the nominees for this consistently popular 2012 MTV Movie Awards category all deserve credit for their wonderfully cinematic tongue tangos. Here’s a look at this year’s very competitive category: Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, “Crazy, Stupid, Love” Much ado has been made over the all-around swoonworthy-ness of Ryan Gosling and the all-around likeability of Emma Stone. Putting them together in a romantic comedy where their first kiss involves an assertive, rain-soaked Emma Stone getting exactly what she wants made for one of the year’s steamiest onscreen kisses. Not to mention Gosling’s adept assist in the scene: He is a Best Kiss winner after all ( for “The Notebook” ) and responsible for one of the best acceptance “speeches” in MTV Movie Awards history. Emma Watson and Rupert Grint, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” Oh, young love. So angsty and confusing and frustrating and, in the case of “Harry Potter” characters Hermione (Watson) and Ron (Grint), too many years in the making. Though the big moment in the movie was different from how things went down in J.K. Rowling’s beloved novels, you can still hear the collective sighs and squeals over their very long-awaited first lip-lock in the blockbuster franchise’s eighth and final film, “Deathly Hallows, Part 2.” Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson, “The Hunger Games” Known affectionately to “Hunger Games” fans as the “cave scene,” Katniss (Lawrence) and Peeta (Hutcherson) find themselves between a literal rock and a hard place when Katniss must venture out to fetch her teammate and would-be love the medicine that will save his life. Katniss’ winning argument for risking her life is sealed with a kiss. Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson, “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1” “Twilight” fans will never tire of seeing kisses shared between their favorite onscreen couple, Edward Cullen and Bella Swan. And luckily for the fans, the three-time winners know how to get the job done, as demonstrated by their passionate, lengthy and very public display of affection after being announced as man and wife in “Breaking Dawn – Part 1.” Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum, “The Vow” What’s more romantic than a devoted and doting husband? One who is charged with the very difficult task of making his wife fall in love with him all over again after she sustains severe memory loss from a traumatic accident. Such is the sweet and sigh-worthy setup for Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams’ heart-melting second first kiss in the romantic drama “The Vow.” Head over to MovieAwards.MTV.com to vote for your favorite flicks now! Taylor Kitsch Snuffs ‘Catching Fire’ Finnick Rumors

Actor was rumored to be in the running for ‘Hunger Games’ sequel, along with Garrett Hedlund and Armie Hammer. By Kara Warner Taylor Kitsch Photo: Getty Images And then there were two? The list of three very eligible male actors — Taylor Kitsch, Armie Hammer and Garrett Hedlund — recently speculated to be the top choices to play fan-favorite character Finnick O’Dair in the “Hunger Games” sequel “Catching Fire” has apparently been trimmed to two. Kitsch said the speculation about his possible involvement in the second film in the blockbuster franchise is just that. “Not going to happen,” the “Battleship” and “John Carter” actor wrote in an email to the Los Angeles Times this week. There has been no word from either Hammer’s or Hedlund’s camps regarding the validity of the report, but when MTV News reached out to Lionsgate for confirmation, we received this statement: “Like the first film, Lionsgate won’t be commenting on any of the rumors until we officially announce.” Finnick appears in both “Catching Fire” and the last book in the franchise, “Mockingjay,” and is memorable for his extreme attractiveness, along with the fact that 10 years before he entered the arena in “Catching Fire,” he had won the Hunger Games at age 14 using a Trident. Another actor rumored to be in the running is Robert Pattinson , who quickly put those rumors to bed. “I was kind of curious for a second,” Pattinson told USA Today about the reports. “So I called my agent. My agent was like, ‘No … no one’s going to offer you that part.’ I was like, ‘Thanks for the reassurance.’ ” This hasn’t stopped us from doing our own speculation and fan casting of the role, which provides for a fun distraction until Lionsgate makes the official announcement. There’s still time to cast your vote for “The Hunger Games” to win big at Sunday’s MTV Movie Awards , airing at 9 p.m. ET. The film is nominated for a slew of Golden Popcorn trophies in the categories of Best Cast, Movie of the Year, Best Hero, Best Fight, Best Kiss and more.
