‘Avengers’ Already A Smash Overseas

Superhero movie, due Stateside in early May, is already breaking records in foreign markets. By Kevin P. Sullivan Chris Evans as Captain America In “The Avengers” Photo: Walt Disney Studios The Avengers have already started to assemble overseas, and early box-office reports are spelling very good things for Marvel’s tentpole. The superhero movie that brings together Captain America, Iron Man, Thor and the Hulk has reportedly made $12.5 million in a handful of foreign markets and is already breaking records, according to The Hollywood Reporter. In Australia, ” The Avengers ” has already banked $7 million, a total that has only been beaten by ” Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 ,” which earned $8 million during its Down Under debut. The foreign rollout has proven lucrative elsewhere, too, as France added $3 million to the total. Early tracking estimated that “The Avengers” could make more than $150 million during its early May opening weekend in the U.S. That would put the film in the same class as “Spider-Man 3,” “The Hunger Games,” “The Dark Knight” and “Deathly Hallows, Part 2.” This could potentially mean the biggest debut for a Marvel Studios movie yet. ” Iron Man 2 ” currently holds that honor. The Robert Downey Jr. sequel opened to $128 million back in 2010. That’s followed by the first ” Iron Man ” at $98 million. “The Avengers” has the added advantage of higher ticket prices. The film is playing both in 3-D and in IMAX 3-D, so each individual ticket will add more to the final total. “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” saw a large bump in its record-breaking run thanks in part to higher prices attached to 3-D showings. Weekend Receipts: Think Like a Man Thinks Like a Champ

After nearly a month in first place, The Hunger Games surrendered its banner to another big-league bestseller-adaptation — and not the one that you (or I, for that matter) were expecting. Your eye-opening Weekend Receipts are here. 1. Think Like a Man Gross: $33,000,000 (new) Screens: 2,015 (PSA $16,377) Weeks: 1 Author Steve Harvey’s comic self-help literary phenomenon became director Tim Story’s comic cinematic-infomercial phenomenon over the weekend, soundly shutting down the Nicholas Sparks adaptation The Lucky One . Or maybe “shutting down” is being kind: Any time you can open on a third fewer screens and earn a third more opening-weekend loot — and more than double the per-screen average — than your closest competition, that’s just an ass-kicking. 2. The Lucky One Gross: $22,805,000 (new) Screens: 3,155 (PSA: $7,228) Weeks: 1 And the thing is, these aren’t especially horrible numbers for the Zac Efron potboiler: As the second-best opening for a Sparks movie to date, it would factor strongly overall into the film’s Sparks Quotient . It would also suggest that Zac Efron couldn’t open a packet of cheese let alone a movie full of the stuff. 3. The Hunger Games Gross: $14,500,000 ($356,900,000) Screens: 3,752 (PSA $3,865) Weeks: 5 (Change: -31.3%) God, third place? After five weeks ? Slackers. 4. Chimpanzee Gross: $10,205,000 (new) Screens: 1,563 (PSA: $6,529) Weeks: 1 Now that’s a fine way for Rich Ross to leave Disney : Fourth place on a nature documentary. The guy couldn’t wait two weeks for The Avengers ? I mean, I know they’d moved his personal parking space to a gas station around the corner from the studio, but still. Have some pride, son. 5. The Three Stooges Gross: $9,200,000 ($29,355,000) Screens: 3,482 (PSA $2,642) Weeks: 2 (Change: -45.9%) Someone had to finish fifth. [Figures via Box Office Mojo ] Follow S.T. Director Francis Lawrence Offered Hunger Games Sequel Catching Fire

Well, it looks like Lionsgate has picked their pony in the Catching Fire directing race ; I Am Legend director Francis Lawrence has reportedly been offered the job to helm the Hunger Games sequel, which is set to start filming on a tight schedule this August. Lawrence has three features under his belt, in addition to music videos for the likes of J. Lo and Britney Spears; he most recently directed Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon in Water for Elephants (but also made 2005’s Constantine ). Lawrence is said to have gotten the offer over Moneyball ‘s Bennett Miller, who Deadline reports was “very interested” in the gig but wanted to take time to film his Foxcatcher first. So what is there to say about Lionsgate’s choice? At least Lawrence has experience handling visual effects, building devastated but slick near-futuristic worlds, and working with teen heartthrobs. And hey, he won a Grammy (for directing Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” video)! So there’s that. If Katniss Everdeen finds herself besieged in a techno bathhouse in the Simon Beaufoy-penned sequel, he’ll know what to do. And hey, maybe he can get Gaga to play Johanna Mason… Catching Fire is already set for release for November 22, 2013. Muse away on the Lawrence hire in the comments below! [ Deadline ]

Weekend Receipts: Hunger Games Slays Lukewarm Stooges and Co.

This is getting a little ridiculous: The Hunger Games claimed its fourth straight weekend box-office win on Sunday, mopping the floor with weak-sauce competition including The Three Stooges , Cabin in the Woods , and a brutally performing Lockout . Your Weekend Receipts are here. 1. The Hunger Games Gross: $21,500,000 ($337,070,000) Screens: 3,916 (PSA $5,490) Weeks: 4 (Change: -35.1%) Where will it end? One can only presume that Zac Efron and Nicholas Sparks will tag team to knock this off the top next week with The Lucky One , but I’m more preoccupied with The Hunger Games ‘ foreign tally — $194 million and counting, with late European markets (including Spain and Italy) still to come. Is a $650 million global take doable? $700 million? And can you believe how much money Gary Ross walked away from for the sequels? Oy. 2. The Three Stooges Gross: $17,100,000 (new) Screens: 3,545 (PSA $4,918) Weeks: 1 Speaking of “oy”… Not terrible, I guess, for recycled slapstick from the mid-20th century, though it clearly needed more nun-kini . 3. The Cabin in the Woods Gross: $14,850,000 (new) Screens: 2,811 (PSA: $5,283) Weeks: 1 I can only imagine the surprise of Lionsgate accountants this morning as they pore over their box-office spreadsheets, scroll down from the Hunger Games numbers, and quizzically exchange glances about this strange other movie their studio opened last Friday. I think is what they call “gravy” in Hollywood. 4. Titanic 3D Gross: $11,625,000 ($44,419,000) Screens: 2,697 (PSA: $4,310) Weeks: 2 (Change: -32.7%) No, wait — this is what they call gravy. Relatively slight drop, though, for a 3-D film, which could mean a surprising showing next week against top-five hopeful Chimpanzee . Also: I can’t believe I just wrote that sentence. 5. American Reunion Gross: $10,700,000 ($39,900,000) Screens: 3,203 (PSA $3,341) Weeks: 2 (Change: -50.3) Whatever. 9. Lockout Gross: $6,250,000 (new) Screens: 2,308 (PSA $2,708) Weeks: 1 And goodbye, Guy Pearce, action hero . We hardly knew ye. [Figures via Box Office Mojo ] Follow S.T. VanAirsdale on Twitter . Shock Over ‘Hunger Games’ Directorgate: New Captain Needed Fast!

Which Hollywood heavy-hitter will step in to take helm of ‘Catching Fire’? By Jason Kaufman Jennifer Lawrence in “Hunger Games” Photo: Lionsgate The big “Hunger Games” news this week wasn’t how much cash continued to pour in, but the director who was on his way out. Gary Ross released a statement saying he would not be back for the sequel. “Despite recent speculation in the media, and after difficult but sincere consideration, I have decided not to direct ‘Catching Fire,’ ” Ross said. “As a writer and a director, I simply don’t have the time I need to write and prep the movie I would have wanted to make because of the fixed and tight production schedule. I loved making ‘The Hunger Games’ — it was the happiest experience of my professional life.” “Hunger Games” studio Lionsgate expressed remorse at Ross’ departure. “We’re very sorry that Gary Ross has chosen not to direct ‘Catching Fire.’ We were really looking forward to making the movie with him. He did an incredible job on the first film and we are grateful for his work.” MTV Movies Managing Editor Eric Ditzian thought something was up. “I am frankly surprised he’s not coming back, but in retrospect, I could see the implication when he was speaking to us, he was very reluctant to talk about ‘Catching Fire,’ ” Ditzian told the panel on the latest edition of MTV News’ “Talk Nerdy.” Watch Gary Ross on “Hunger Games” Sequels” “Nerdy” host Josh Wigler expressed the need for urgency on the part of Lionsgate to make their hire soon. “Whoever they get to direct ‘Fire’ needs to have started yesterday. They really need to make this hire pretty fast; production is moving in August.” Who will step in for Ross? On Ditzian’s wish list: Darren Aronofsky. “Great with the hand-held camera, great with these intimate first-person narratives. But it’s not going to happen. He’s busy.” Ditzian’s pick for the auteur to drive Katniss’ next chapter is Oscar-winning Danny Boyle, who’s no stranger to hand-held cameras himself and has proved time and time again, from “Trainspotting” to “127 Hours,” that he’s a master of first-person tales as well. The MTV Movies staff also predicts the short list of directors will include Steven Soderbergh, John Hillcoat and J.J. Abrams. Best Picks for the “Catching Fire” Director Job “The movie can survive,” Ditzian said. Hillary Clinton Thanks ‘Texts From Hillary’ Creators For ‘Many LOLZ’

Proving herself a good sport, Secretary of State creates her own submission for meme. By John Mitchell The photo of Hillary Clinton that inspired “Texts From Hillary” Photo: Getty Images/Tumblr The Tumblr “Texts From Hillary” launched just one week ago, but it already has one very famous fan: Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. The site pairs a well-known picture of Clinton on her Blackberry with photos of other Washington politicos and celebrities on their mobile devices, adding jokey, text message-like captions. It has gone viral in a major way, and its sudden ubiquity earned creators Adam Smith and Stacy Lambe an invitation to the State Department to meet their muse. Ever the good sport, Clinton is a fan of the meme just like everybody else and even created an entry of her own , which she autographed for Smith and Lambe, writing, “Adam — Thanks for the many LOLZ Hillary ‘Hillz.’ ” “I don’t think anyone ever imagines that they’d create a meme like this and it becomes an overnight sensation,” Smith told Politico . “It’s just been a wild ride.” The conceit of the site is that Clinton is a no-nonsense power player with a penchant for telling it like it is. In the various entries, she sends snappy, matter-of-fact quips to people including President Barack Obama, Lady Gaga, Sarah Palin, Jay-Z and Beyonc
