Woody Harrelson’s ‘Hunger Games’ Wig Amped Up Haymitch Portrayal

Stylist Linda Flowers tells MTV News that blond wig ‘gives his character a little bit of a push.’ By Amy Wilkinson Woody Harrelson in “The Hunger Games” Photo: Lionsgate Stylist Linda Flowers had run with Vince’s “Entourage,” played with “Angels & Demons” and even primped a “Social Network” tycoon for his profile picture, but the Hollywood veteran took on her hairiest project yet with the eye-popping adaptation of ” The Hunger Games .” As the film’s hair department head, Flowers, in harmony with director Gary Ross’ vision, crafted the iconic, and frequently candy-colored, ‘dos of Effie Trinket and more than 500 Capitol citizens. We hopped on the phone with Flowers to chat about the meticulous mentor’s look, Woody Harrelson’s unconventional Haymitch style and where exactly all that hair went after Ross yelled, “Cut!” MTV News : What was your experience reading “The Hunger Games” for the first time? Did you start formulating looks as you read? Linda Flowers : When I read it, I fell in love with it, and I read all three of them very quickly. It’s such a great story, and it’s gonna appeal to so many different demographics. Anytime you get to read a book with colorful characters and they’ve got pink hair and blue hair, I’m in. My imagination was going crazy. I mean, how often do you get to put pink hair on somebody? MTV : What did you and Gary discuss during your initial conversation? Flowers : Gary’s main concern was with all the colored hair. He wanted people to take the Capitol seriously, and he wanted the looks to be couture. So when you’re talking about orange and aqua and pink and blue hair, the first place people go is very young, and they think it is more a street look or an urban look for kids. But the challenge was to put it on all age groups and make it look couture. MTV : Logistically, this had to be a grand-scale production. Describe a typical day on set. Flowers : When we were at the peak of all of our Capitol people, I had 45 hairdressers working because everyone had to go through hair and makeup. Each person had an individual look. When you do period movies, the hair is already set, the period has already been set, but there was nothing established for the look of this because it’s in the future. Each person that sat down, a look had to be created for them even if they were, like, #500 on the call sheet. So that was a real challenge, and plus, not just the hairdressers to do their hair, but we had to have a clean-up crew come in when we wrapped to take everyone’s hair, wigs and pieces off to reset them and get them ready for the next day. So it was an around-the-clock deal because we have 30 to 40 people doing hair and 10 to 15 to come in when we wrapped and take everyone down so the hairdressers could go home and sleep to get ready for the next day. MTV : Who had the most time-consuming look? Flowers : It was Effie, but the good thing was I could do Effie’s hair when she wasn’t in the trailer. Her hair definitely took the most time. From start to finish it was about 45 minutes, and I’m really fast. I constructed it slowly. She’s one of those people who’s so completely and purposefully put together that her wig would be an accessory just like a purse or a pair of shoes. So she has three wigs in the movie, and we’re going to have more for her in the next movie. She wears three different looks, and they’re all the same shape. I picked a classic shape, which has a ’30s finger-wave bob, and I took that and I really brushed it out, but it kept the finger waves, and I gave it a lot of volume. And then I took really heavily textured hair and put it in between the layers of her finger waves. MTV : It sounds like you’re already planning ahead for “Catching Fire.” Flowers : Yes. I prepped five or six wigs, and she only wore three in the first one, so we do have some for the second one, and I will prep more. I think everyone was afraid; they didn’t want people to be taken out of the movie with it being too over-the-top or too colorful, so that’s why I chose a pastel palette to start her off with in the movie. When you see her in the Capitol, it gets brighter and she gets a little more extreme. MTV : The hairstyle that’s probably raised the most eyebrows is Woody Harrelson’s Haymitch look, which he fashioned after his brother. What did you think when he approached you with the concept? Flowers : Well, he originally wanted it longer. He brought in a photo of his brother, and his brother looks just like him with the wig on. It was really what he wanted, and then, you know, I showed it to Gary, and he looked at it. He goes, “You know, I think that would be a good look for him, we just need to make it a little shorter.” It looks like the period. The District 12 people kind of have a ’30s-period haircut because they’re very poor and they work in the mines. It kinda looked like that but really grown out. The thing, too, when you’re trying to give a character a kind of character look — someone that has hair like he does — you can make it a little dirty and a little disheveled and make it look like you haven’t shampooed it recently, and it gives his character a little bit of a push. When you have no hair, you can’t really give that push. You can’t really see a passage of time; he’s normal, then he’s drunk and he woke up, and he’s hungover. You can articulate that and express that through the hair. With no hair, you really can’t express that. It really helped me help him with his character. MTV : I can only imagine what some random warehouse in North Carolina must look like with hundreds of wigs lying around. Flowers : You gotta remember, we used over 500 wigs in this movie. There is a warehouse full of trunks with wigs and stuff like that. I keep the cast wigs in a more secure — I don’t keep them in a warehouse. They’re actually in a very secure place that Lionsgate has. Twilight vs. The Hunger Games: Which Series Will Come Out On Top?

With Lionsgate’s big screen adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ teen-centric sci-fi survival-adventure The Hunger Games hitting screens this week, it’s kind of impossible not to draw comparisons to that other YA juggernaut series, which concludes its billion-dollar run on pop culture this fall. So how does The Hunger Games measure up to Twilight ? Some spoilers follow. THE BOOKS Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight , first published in 2005, spawned a total of four books (and one spin-off novella) that were adapted into five movies ( Breaking Dawn Part 2 hits screens this November), with over 116 million copies in print. Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games , first published in 2008, spawned a total of three books set to be adapted into four movies, with over 26 million copies in print. Advantage: Twilight THE HEROINE Twilight : Bella Swan is a 17-year-old girl who moves to gloomy Forks, Washington and falls in love with a vampire. Unassuming and average, she finds her inner strength after four novels’ worth of being imperiled by embracing her destiny and starting a family. Hunger Games : Katniss Everdeen is a 16-year-old girl who lives in gloomy District 12 in the fascist future world of Panem and must fight for her life in a televised battle royale. A skilled huntress, she finds her inner heroine after three novels’ worth of being a pawn in the Capitol’s games by embracing her destiny and becoming a symbol of the resistance. Advantage: Hunger Games SUPER POWERS (AND SUPER WEAKNESSES) Twilight : Left at the mercies of other people’s protection, Bella’s the lame duck for most of the saga, until she discovers that her secret power is, literally, the ability to protect her loved ones. Seriously. Meanwhile, her love for Edward keeps threatening to ruin everything – prom, her sex life, the future of all vampirekind. Hunger Games : Empowered at an early age thanks to her father’s untimely death, Katniss is the provider in her family for most of her life, until she enters the Games and discovers that compassion for others, and the newfound ability to trust in Peeta, is the key to survival. Her only weakness, it could be said, is that her personal drive to survive is so strong she has trouble seeing the big picture, and her place in it. Advantage: Hunger Games THE LOVE TRIANGLE Twilight : Bella must choose between two suitors – Edward Cullen, the sparkly vampire, and Jacob Black, her werewolf BFF. Heated tent scenes, make-out sessions, and torrid glances ensue. Hunger Games : Katniss must choose between two suitors – Peeta, the golden baker’s son (and her fellow Tribute in the Hunger Games), and Gale, her earthy BFF. Play-acted cave scenes, tender kisses, and internal struggles ensue – that is, when Katniss isn’t busy, you know, fighting for her life. Advantage: Twilight THE THEMES Twilight : Love, lust, abstinence, teen pregnancy, motherhood, sexuality vs. sin. Hunger Games : Fighting injustice, taking a stand, trusting others, personal responsibility. Advantage: Hunger Games. THE ONSCREEN PG-13 ACTION Twilight : Speed-ramped vampire running, bad wirework, CG werewolf-vampire melees, non-gory limb-shattering/ripping/beheadings, and one vivid, suggestive C-section by vampire scene. Hunger Games : Training exercises, arrow-shooting, hand-to-hand combat, bladed weapons, Tracker Jacker (i.e. hallucination-inducing poison bee) attacks, and one vivid, suggestive shaky-cam Cornucopia melee. Advantage: Hunger Games FILM PEDIGREE Twilight : Installments directed by Catherine Hardwicke ( Twilight ), Chris Weitz ( New Moon ), David Slade ( Eclipse ), and Oscar-winner Bill Condon ( Breaking Dawn Parts 1 & 2 ). Top Rotten Tomatoes score: Eclipse , at 49%. Hunger Games : The Hunger Games directed by Oscar-nominee Gary Ross, who is set to direct the next sequel, Catching Fire . Current Rotten Tomatoes score: 100% (with 17 reviews in). Advantage: Hunger Games — Seems like The Hunger Games has the edge over Twilight by most of the above criteria, stemming from its more complex and stirring lead character, story, and themes. That said, Twilight fandom outpaces Hunger Games fandom by the millions, circulation-wise. Will solid critical reviews and stellar pre-release ticket sales help bump The Hunger Games to Twilight -level box office returns — and convince non-fans to give it a shot? Sound off below, Movieliners!

Twilight vs. The Hunger Games: Which Series Will Come Out On Top?

‘Hunger Games’ Costume Designer Reveals Biggest Wardrobe Challenge

‘The dress [had] a very big chance of coming off as cheesy,’ Judianna Makovsky says of Katniss’ interview frock. By Amy Wilkinson Jennifer Lawrence in the girl on fire costume in “Hunger Games” Photo: Lionsgate Costume designer Judianna Makovsky has been a member of Gary Ross’ cinematic glam squad for years. That’s why when ” The Hunger Games ” director was piecing together a pitch as to why he should helm the dystopian drama, he made a late-night call to his trusted colleague. The thrice-Oscar-nominated designer has collaborated with Ross on a number of his films, including “Pleasantville” and “Seabiscuit,” and now the duo may be working on their highest-profile project yet — one in which wild wigs, garish gowns and flame-licked jumpsuits are just another day at the office. In anticipation of the March 23 release of “The Hunger Games,” MTV News put in a call to Makovsky to talk about the Capitol’s crazy couture and how author Suzanne Collins’ elaborate vision was brought to life — albeit with a few alterations. MTV : How much did you know about “The Hunger Games” before Gary Ross came calling? Judianna Makovsky : I had not read them, I have to admit. I hadn’t even heard of them. But Gary Ross had called me, and his kids loved them, and he said, “I really want to do this movie.” I was on another movie set in Shreveport, Louisiana. He said, “You have to go get it,” and I said, “It’s 10 o’clock at night.” He said, “You have to get it first thing in the morning. You have to read it.” I’m like, “OK.” And then I was sending him images every day so he could start thinking. They were talking to several directors, and he really wanted to do it. It was great to start that early with him — trying to find images that were useful to him. MTV : I have to imagine reading the series and Suzanne Collins’ vivid descriptions were an evocative experience for an artist like you. Makovsky : I have to say, I try to read everything like a fan, but I also read it as a costume designer, and I go, “Oh my god. How do you do that?” Also, I was lucky enough to have a meeting with Suzanne, and a lot of things that are in the written word do not translate well to film. Lucky for me, she understood that and knew that and said, “Do what you need to do. If you think it’s not going to translate, I understand.” And she was great about it. MTV : Did you show her any of your drawings? Makovsky : At that point, if was fairly early. We had very few. We had already done mood boards for the districts and where we wanted to go. And, yes, she was there for that and loved all of that. It was great. MTV : What were your initial discussions with Gary Ross like? Makovsky : The initial discussions always start with character. I would say on this movie, we started with the world that they were going to live in. Philip Messina is the production designer. I’ve worked with him before; we’re a great team. Gary, Phil and I all sat down and just talked about what this world was going to be, and how do you have District 12 — how does that reflect in the Capitol? Because it is all the same planet, it is all the same time period. So they have to make sense together … Before Gary got the job, we sent him all these images of coal-mining towns and all these things. He picked up some of them and just went, “This is it. This isn’t a period movie, but I want the feel of these photographs.” So it was basically a discussion about the world they lived in, and then we started talking about individual characters. MTV : As you started working on each character, how much input did the individual actors have? Makovsky : There’s no point in designing particular things until you know who the actor is, whether I have a discussion with them or not. Katniss, I worked very closely with Jen [ Jennifer Lawrence ] because she was cast first. I had actually worked with Josh [Hutcherson] before, so that made that easy. I had worked with Donald Sutherland before. A lot of the actors were unavailable for fittings. They were all over the world shooting things. I sent them images, then I did sketches for them. Then we basically made it without them and they showed up and put it on! I have to say, the age of the Internet is a fabulous thing. You can scan things and send things and have these discussions at three in the morning when they’re in Budapest or wherever. MTV : Which outfit posed the biggest challenge to you? Makovsky : I think the interview dress. I think it was the hardest because the description in the book was something every fan loves but, honestly, in my opinion, and in all of our opinions, it wasn’t going to translate. Having this dress covered in flame-like jewels, you know, it’s no longer about Katniss. It’s about the dress. Also, the dress has a chance, a very big chance, of coming off as cheesy. MTV : I can see how it might verge into figure-skating-costume territory. Makovsky : See, that’s what I was worried about. It was going to be a “Dancing With the Stars” dress. I said, “I think we shouldn’t go that way.” First of all, all those jewels, it’s going to be so heavy it won’t twirl. She won’t be able to move or walk. People don’t realize that. I decided that it should really be about Katniss, and I wanted a young, fresh, modern couture cut, that when you first see her beautiful dress and she does her twirl, it does what it does. I mean, the bottom does have Swarovski crystals on it. But I really wanted it to be about Katniss. How beautifully she has transformed. It’s not the dress that transformed her. It’s her. Her beauty comes through. MTV : Fans were also really excited to see Katniss’ sleek Girl on Fire outfit. You have a bit of experience with jumpsuits from working on “X-Men: The Last Stand.” Did you hearken back to those superheroes for inspiration? Makovsky : I actually had the woman who made my “X-Men” jumpsuits make these costumes for me. She’s a genius at that kind of fit. Everyone thinks it’s leather — it’s not leather. It’s a novelty stretch fabric with this embossed plastic on it. It’s a very strange fabric. There’s also some stretch patent leather in there, but there’s no leather. I just wanted something that would have this incredible silhouette and have the shine of coal. In the books, it’s actually described a little bit more bland to me. It sounds like leotards and tights with high boots. It has a cape. There were all kinds of things that had to change because of physical and practical things on a chariot. The description in the book — Katniss and Peeta wear the same thing. Katniss had this fabulous headdress, but you put the headdress on Peeta and it looks pretty stupid. You can’t always do the same for a boy and a girl. MTV : Even though Katniss is the one in the spotlight, everyone seems to be most excited about Effie Trinket’s looks. Makovsky : She’s the essence of the Capitol. Working with Elizabeth [Banks] — Oh my god! I had so much fun. I’ve worked with her before. She actually called me before she was allowed to because her deal wasn’t done. She said, “I think we should start now. I’m coming over.” I had all these ideas that I had pulled out, fabric swatches and whatever. She came over and looked at what would work for her. We tried shapes on her, and they kept growing and growing and growing. It was really funny. Just to give her a certain walk. Effie is very prim in a funny way. So we wanted that primness to come through even though we sort of wanted to lampoon high fashion a little bit. It’s a little bit silly but it is still pretty. ‘Hunger Games’ Star Josh Hutcherson Doesn’t ‘Play It Cool’ Like Peeta

‘Peeta has a hard time saying how he feels to women. I have the opposite problem,’ Hutcherson tells MTV News. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Josh Hutcherson Photo: MTV News For the Josh Hutcherson fans out there who have been onboard with his “Hunger Games” casting in the role of Peeta Mellark since the beginning, you’re clearly on the same page as the actor himself, who has told us several times that he feels such a connection to Peeta that it “hurts.” “I feel like so much of who I am is Peeta,” Hutcherson told MTV News recently . “It drove me crazy during the audition process, because I was like, ‘This is so me, it hurts. If I don’t get this, I’m not even good at being me, so now what am I? I have no idea what to do next.’ ” And when we caught up with the young man behind the boy with the bread during the film’s press day, we asked if there was anything he and Peeta don’t have in common. “Peeta has a hard time saying how he feels to women. I have the opposite problem,” Hutcherson admitted. “I say it too soon, so we’re different in that respect. But, honestly, we’re very similar in so many ways it’s kind of hard to pick out the difference.” When asked whether his upfront approach in revealing his feelings too soon works in his favor, the “Journey 2” actor had no problem admitting defeat. “Not at all,” he said of his method’s effectiveness. “I think I should probably adopt more of Peeta’s strategy and maybe play it cool a little longer.” As those of us who have read Suzanne Collins’ books well know, however, that Peeta doesn’t play it cool for very long. Once he admits his feelings for Katniss, his affection does not waver at all. “Well, it’s borderline obsessed and that’s never good to be obsessed with anything really, but I think that he’s just that in love,” Hutcherson said in reference to his character’s attachment to Katniss. “He can’t help himself; he’s just head-over-heels and hopelessly in love.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Hunger Games.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . Jennifer Lawrence Says Shooting ‘Catching Fire’ Will Be ‘A Blessing’

‘I got to play this character that I love, and then whatever I didn’t like, I can fix next year,’ ‘Hunger Games’ star tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Jennifer Lawrence Photo: MTV News “The Hunger Games.” has yet to hit theaters, but preparations for the next flick in the series, “Catching Fire,” are already in the works. Still, the franchise’s leading lady, Jennifer Lawrence, is just trying to catch her breath for the first film, out March 23, before she can catch fire. “It’s kind of like when we’re there, let’s talk about it. But until then I’m sick of hearing about myself as Katniss,” she laughed to MTV News when asked how she feels about having to hit the set for the next film. “And also we’ve been focusing on getting this one out so much that we haven’t really had time to talk about the second one. I’m sure they’ve had time.” “Catching Fire” picks up where the first novel/movie leaves off. (Warning: Minor spoilers ahead!) With the latest round of the Hunger Games over and Katniss and her pal, Peeta, standing victorious, there’s rebellion under way against the Capitol. But that’s not the only upheaval. There’s a special edition of the Hunger Games announced that will up the stakes once again for the two friends and everyone they know. “I think one and three are my favorites [in the franchise],” she said of her favorite novels in the Suzanne Collins-penned trilogy. “But ‘Catching Fire,’ I’m looking forward to shooting ’cause it kind of becomes more of a war movie.” While some actors might not be ready to commit to a multiple film franchise, the Oscar nominee saw it as a chance to create the Katniss character in a fully realized way. “That was definitely something to take into consideration. But then I was like, I’m an actor so I would be doing a film, at least a movie a year anyway,” she explained. “And then the opportunity to play a character that you love and something you’re really passionate about, that happens rarely, if at all, in somebody’s life. So now it’s a blessing ’cause I got to play this character that I love this year and then whatever I didn’t like, I can fix next year.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Hunger Games.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . Kristen Stewart Promises Charlize Theron Will ‘Level You’ In ‘Snow White’

‘Ravenna and Snow White are bound,’ Stewart explains in new featurette about their young princess and evil queen characters. By Jocelyn Vena Kristen Stewart in “Snow White And The Huntsman” Photo: Universal Pictures In several new featurettes from Kristen Stewart’s “Snow White and the Huntsman,” fans get a taste of what looks to be a visually arresting, very dark spin on the classic fairy tale. With “No Church in the Wild” from Jay-Z and Kanye West’s Watch the Throne album thumping in the background in the clip, Stewart and castmates Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron open up about making the Rupert Sanders-directed film. We also get a taste of what the film, which Theron describes as a “feast for [the] eyes,” will look like. “Snow White” is full of epic battle scenes and eye-popping CGI that helps tell the story of a young princess battling an evil queen. “The director, Rupert, conjured up visuals that absolutely transported you somewhere else and it wasn’t at all what I expected,” Stewart says. The big-screen retelling revolves around the feud between Queen Ravenna (Theron) and the inherently good Snow White (Stewart). “The Queen really symbolizes death and Snow White is the beating heart,” the director says of the struggle between the two leading ladies. “This is an incredible opportunity to create a world that people have never seen before.” Theron also talks about facing off with Stewart in another behind-the-scenes clip. “As on outsider, I see her for all the things the audience will, but as an insider playing her I had to not think about those things,” she explains. “Ravenna and Snow White are bound, in a way,” Stewart explains. “She can level you,” she added about Theron’s performance as the queen. A trailer will drop Monday during “The Voice” with an extended scene also hitting the Net that same day. In a new trailer sneak peek , the backstory is teased as Ravenna makes clear her intentions to kill Snow White. The film opens June 1. Taylor Swift Goes Big On ‘Hunger Games’ Song ‘Eyes Open’

Track teases soundtrack album, which drops on March 20, ahead of ‘Hunger Games’ release on March 23. By Jocelyn Vena Taylor Swift Photo: Jon Kopaloff/FilmMagic Taylor Swift ‘s other “Hunger Games” track, “Eyes Open,” has hit the ‘Net nearly a week before the official soundtrack drops. Whereas “Safe & Sound” is sparse and gloomy, Swift’s second “Hunger Games” soundtrack contribution is more epic and upbeat, at least musically. The lyrics still touch on many of the darker themes of the film, meaning that she sings about the loss of innocence and the need to stay strong in the face of adversity. “Yesterday we were just children/ Playing soldier just pretending/ Dreaming dreams with happy endings,” she sings on the track, which has been posted on Perez Hilton’s website . “In backyards battle with the wooden swords/ But now we’ve stepped into a cruel world/ Where everybody stands and keeps score.” The song is punctuated by big guitar riffs and a rock-inspired beat as Swift continues on the chorus, “Keep your eyes open/ Everybody’s waiting for you to break down/ Everybody’s watching to see the fallout/ Even when you’re sleeping, sleeping/ Keep your eyes, eyes open.” Lyrically, many of the tributes in the Hunger Games can relate to that need to be strong, but it seems to be particularly pointed at the story’s female lead, Katniss Everdeen, played by Oscar nominee Jennifer Lawrence, who becomes the face of revolution in the beloved franchise. The full “Hunger Games” soundtrack drops on March 20, just days before the film opens on March 23. It features a wide array of artists, including Miranda Lambert, the Civil Wars (who also appear with Swift on “Safe & Sound”), Arcade Fire, Kid Cudi and more. “I immediately read the book in, like, two days and fell in love with it,” Swift explained about her love of all things “HG” when she sat down with MTV News during her “First” last month. “I fell in love with the characters, fell in love with the world that Suzanne Collins had created. I was just so immersed in it.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Hunger Games.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com .
