Exclusive! ‘Hunger Games’ Cast Answers Your Questions

Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth talk on-set pranks and meeting Suzanne Collins. By Kara Warner, with additional reporting by MTV UK Liam Hemsworth, Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson in “The Hunger Games” Photo: Lionsgate This week has been a real treat for “Hunger Games” fans. The highly anticipated film continues to be a serious competitor in our Movies Brawl 2012 , we’ve featured three of the castmembers as part of our select group of Ones to Watch this year, and now we’re rolling out the first part of three lengthy interviews with Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth. All questions were submitted via Twitter by you, the fans. The first batch features talk of hilarious on-set pranks, injuries and some details about the arena. Minor spoilers ahead for those who haven’t read the books! Be sure to check back here next week for part two of our interviews. @jjusan : I’ve heard a lot about pranking on the set… tell us one of the things that happened! Josh Hutcherson : They had a full life-sized dummy of one of our tributes that had gotten killed by a Tracker Jacker, and basically it’s all swollen and gnarly-looking and mangled, and Jennifer was out of her trailer so I took the dummy and put it inside her bathroom in her trailer. I wasn’t there for the big moment when she saw it, which I can’t believe I missed, but I’ve been told that she actually peed her pants in reaction to it. So, I was pretty proud of myself and amazed that someone actually peed their pants in fear, because I didn’t know that happened. Jennifer Lawrence : Pranks. Oh yeah, Josh, he took the dummy from one of the tributes that dies from the Tracker Jackers’ sting that is completely deformed and put it on my toilet, shut the door and [had it] holding a toilet paper roll, just for added effect. I’m in my trailer and open the bathroom door and scream and my friend grabs me and had to say “It’s fake, it’s fake, it’s fake!” I hate him. I still haven’t gotten him back for that, actually. I don’t know what to do to get him back for something like that. I’d have to find a real dead body. Liam Hemsworth : Jennifer would often try and make you laugh just before “Action.” She’d say something funny. She’d get you and really surprise you, though, because you’d be rolling up, ready for them to say “Action,” and she’d ask you some silly question about something. You’d hear it and be like, “Wait, what?” And then “Action” and you’d be like “OK. Thanks for that.” It’s funny to her, I guess. @PRIMdelenaTVD : What can you tell us about the arena? What was it like? Hutcherson : The arena is a giant. It’s a forest, pretty much. We shot it in the mountains of North Carolina, just outside of Asheville, and it’s pretty cool. The terrain we had to get through to get our cameras and equipment there was impressive that we even got it made in time. It looks amazing on film, too. @OttoRivera : Have you met Suzanne Collins? Lawrence : I have, she’s wonderful. That was, I think, the most nervous I’ve ever been meeting a person because I kept thinking, “What if she doesn’t like me?” But I did meet her, and she’s fantastic. @HGTribute_Manda :What’s the most difficult scene to shoot? Hutcherson :The cave scene for me, where Katniss and Peeta are in the cave after Katniss has rescued Peeta more or less, was tough to shoot, also my favorite scene to shoot because we didn’t have a lot of time. We had a lot of scene to get through and a lot of character arc to get through, so for me that was really fun but also a really big challenge. @eringabin : Did you get any injuries during filming? Lawrence : Yeah. There was the trees, there was tree climbing, getting scratched up by trees. My back started getting weird, I think from all the running downhill, so I had to go to the chiropractor once a week, which is terrifying . I’ve never been to a chiropractor before and it just feels like they’re going to snap your neck at any moment. There were some ankle and knee [injuries] but you don’t have time to be injured. The look on the producer’s face if I say “ow” is awful, so I tried to just kind of stay quiet about it. Josh Hutcherson Has Seen ‘A Good Little Bit’ Of ‘Hunger Games’

“The music is insane … It’s coming together great,” actor tells MTV News at People’s Choice Awards. By Kara Warner Josh Hutcherson Photo: MTV News It’s hard to contain our excitement for “The Hunger Games,” and although we still have more than two months to wait until its release in theaters, our anxiousness is alleviated whenever we have the opportunity to speak with one of the film’s stars. At Wednesday night’s (January 11) People’s Choice Awards, MTV News was lucky enough to catch up with presenter Josh Hutcherson, who plays Peeta Mellark. He revealed that he has actually seen some of the finished film via his Automated Dialogue Recording sessions (wherein actors re-record certain sections of dialogue in order to improve the quality of the audio). “I did ADR yesterday, actually. I saw a good little bit of the film yesterday; it looks good,” he assured. “I’m really excited. The music is insane. The sound design, the editing, everything is amazing. It’s coming together great.” Hutcherson said the first scene of competition in the actual Hunger Games — which, for those unfamiliar with the bestselling book upon which the movie is based, is a fight to the death among children — is going to blow people’s minds in the best way possible. “The scene with the cornucopia, where we all first rush in to get the weapons and whatnot, the way [director Gary Ross] has that scored and cut looks so amazing,” he shared. “I can’t wait for people to see it.” Hutcherson added that, despite the film’s PG-13 rating, Ross hasn’t watered down the brutality and bloodshed from Suzanne Collins’ book. Regarding how the flick gets around showing all the gore, Hutcherson teased, “Gary Ross does it. I can’t give it away, but he does it. It’s a little trick. It looks great, and it still has the brutality that the book had, while being PG-13.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Hunger Games.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Jennifer Lawrence Selected To Announce Oscar Nods

‘Hunger Games’ star was up for Best Actress at the 2011 Academy Awards. By Jocelyn Vena Jennifer Lawrence Photo: Dan Kitwood/Getty Images Jennifer Lawrence has been selected by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to announce this year’s Oscar nominees. The “Hunger Games” actress will be joined by Academy President Tom Sherak at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills on January 24 to reveal just who will be up for one of those coveted gold statues, the Academy announced on Monday (January 9). The show, airing on ABC, is set to take place on February 26 with host Billy Crystal . Lawrence was up for Best Actress at the 2011 show for her star-making turn in “Winter’s Bone.” While she lost to “Black Swan” star Natalie Portman , she made headlines thanks to her body-hugging red dress. She’s next set to star in “The Hunger Games,” set for release on March 23. The same day her Oscars gig was announced, Lionsgate announced plans for pre-sale tickets for the highly anticipated flick , which also stars Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth . For those hungry to get their hands on tickets early, advanced sales kick off on February 22. When Lawrence was first cast in the film, which is based on the beloved novels by Suzanne Collins, fans had some reservations about whether she could fully embody the books’ heroine, Katniss Everdeen. “I wasn’t aware that everybody was so upset until I after I got my hair dyed, and people were like, ‘Oh my gosh, blond hair can turn brown. Wow. It’s a miracle,’ ” Lawrence told MTV News in May of last year. ‘The Devil Inside’ Defies Expectations At Box Office

Horror flick was the weekend’s frontrunner with $34.5 million debut. By Ryan J. Downey Suzan Crowley and Isabella Rossi in “The Devil Inside” Photo: Paramount Pictures Box office prognosticators, beware: “The Devil Inside” defied all industry expectations with its $34.5 million debut this weekend. That’s more than double where most estimates put the film just a few days ago. And despite overwhelmingly negative reviews, the supernatural horror thriller earned more than 34 times its estimated production budget of less than $1 million. Even some horror-centric sites like Fearnet and Horror.com were among the whopping 93 percent of film critics who panned “The Devil Inside,” according to film review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. Twitter accounts were ablaze over the weekend with reports of audiences vociferously booing the film’s ending. Moviegoers on average gave the film an “F,” according to CinemaScore. Drew McWeeny of Hitfix called it “an insidious kind of terrible movie, simply low-grade bad for most of its thankfully brief running time before offering up an ending so openly contemptuous of the audience as to feel like a prank.” Perhaps the devil is in the details: “Devil” made 49 percent of its weekend total on Friday and was the only new wide release in theaters, with the exception of the acclaimed drama “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.” The Cold War era espionage tale, which expanded to 809 locations, had the weekend’s second-best per-screen average, just behind “Devil” at 2,285 locations. Nevertheless, the Paramount-distributed “Devil” had the third-biggest January opening ever, just behind 2008’s “Cloverfield” and the 1997 re-release of the first “Star Wars.” “Devil” was acquired by the Paramount imprint Insurge, which was created after the success of the first “Paranormal Activity” in 2009. Paramount was the studio behind the weekend’s second biggest movie of the weekend as well. “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” is the best-reviewed film of the Tom Cruise franchise and dropped a respectable 30 percent after a nice run at the top of the heap. “Ghost Protocol” earned $20.5 million for a total of $170.2 million, which should put it past the first “M:I” movie in a few days. “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” made $14 million in its fourth week of release to come in at #3. The sequel was #1 at the box office in other parts of the world and has made a total of $157.4 million domestically. “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” had the best hold of any of the previously wide-released movies over the weekend, dropping just 24 percent. “Dragon Tattoo” was #4 with $11.3 million for a $76.8 million three-week total. The animated “Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked” rounded out the top five with $9.5 million for a four-week total of $111.5 million. What did you think of “The Devil Inside”? Josh Hutcherson Is One To Watch In 2012

‘I’m excited for ‘The Hunger Games’ to come out and see how that does and hopefully get started on the second one,’ up-and-comer tells us. By Kara Warner Josh Hutcherson in “The Hunger Games” Photo: Lionsgate It’s no secret that we’ve been keeping close tabs on soon-to-be superstar Josh Hutcherson . After his noteworthy performance in critical darling “The Kids Are All Right” last year, followed by his casting in the coveted role of Peeta Mellark in “The Hunger Games,” we are very interested in what Hutcherson is up to these days. 2012 is poised to be Hutcherson’s biggest year yet, beginning with “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island,” co-starring Vanessa Hudgens and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. “Journey 2” opens in theaters February 10, and less than a month later we’ll welcome the release of “The Hunger Games.” We’re not the only ones excited for the big-screen version of Suzanne Collins’ best-seller. “The Hunger Games” is holding steady as one of the most anticipated movies of the year as voted by you, the fans over at our Movie Brawl . So it’s easy to see why Hutcherson is “One to Watch” this year. MTV News recently caught up with the 18-year-old to talk about his big year. “2012 is going to be a really big year, I’m looking forward to it,” Hutcherson said. “[There’s going to be] a lot of press, a lot of traveling with that. I’m excited for ‘The Hunger Games’ to come out and see how that does and hopefully get started on the second one.” In addition to acting, Hutcherson also revealed that he hopes to one day work behind the camera in addition to in front of it. “I want to get into directing and producing and writing my own stuff at some point. I’m kind of just tiptoeing into that as well,” he said. Our “One to Watch” has mentioned actors such as Christian Bale, Jake Gyllenhaal and Ryan Gosling as career role models with regard to the careful choices they’ve made in choosing films. “It’s all about balance; everything in life is about balance, in my opinion,” Hutcherson said . “You have to do the big studio movies to keep people caring about you in a way, and also for me, I’ve been really fortunate. I haven’t done any big studio movies that suck. They’ve all been good material and that’s the most important thing for my career, to choose the right material and to choose the characters that I care about and stories I want to tell. So that’s kind of how I’ve gone about my career since I was 9, more or less.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Hunger Games.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . ‘The Hunger Games’ In 2012: Our Five Forecasts

From the film’s premiere to casting ‘Catching Fire,’ Hobnobbing takes a look at what to look forward to this year. By Amy Wilkinson Jennifer Lawrence in the “Hunger Games” trailer Photo: Lionsgate The past year boasted a cornucopia of ” Hunger Games ” highlights for fans to chew on, from the casting of Jennifer Lawrence as gritty heroine Katniss Everdeen to the first full-length trailer to the recent debut of Taylor Swift’s soundtrack song “Safe and Sound.” But as bountiful as 2011’s harvest was, 2012 will offer a bumper crop of news from the big-screen adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ dystopian tome as it finally hits theaters March 23. Though our calls to Greasy Sae’s Psychic Hotline have gone unanswered, we have a few educated guesses about what the new year holds for Panem’s people. Read on for our five forecasts: 1. One more trailer With just about two and a half months to go until the first film’s debut, we’d bet a silver parachute that fans will get to feast on one more look at Katniss, Peeta and Gale before the tributes enter the arena. What another clip would include , well, we’re less sure about that, but we wouldn’t mind a closer look at life in District 12 or a more detailed glimpse at the other 22 tributes. 2. A full soundtrack announcement Swift, the Civil Wars, the Decemberists and Arcade Fire’s husband/wife duo of Win Butler and Regine Chassagne have all been secured for the T-Bone Burnett-produced soundtrack, but we suspect a few more artists will enter the fray before all is said and sung. I’ve already made my plea for Florence and the Machine , while NextMovie suggested acts like Snow Patrol and Regina Spektor for the much-anticipated album. We’ll keep our ears to the ground for this one. 3. The film’s premiere Unless the apocalypse comes early, March 23 will be a blessed day for “Hunger Games” acolytes, as the flick will finally blaze into theaters. We expect more than a few faithful to camp out at their local cineplex for a midnight showing. And we’re more than ready to drool over whatever confections Lawrence wears on the red carpet during the movie’s premieres and publicity circuit. 4. Casting “Catching Fire” With the second “Hunger Games” installment already slated for a November 22, 2013, release (and an Oscar-winning writer being eyed for the script), we expect the follow-up to begin shooting in mid- to late 2012 — which means a whole new slew of casting calls! Where are you Finnick , Johanna, Beetee and Mags? 5. First look at “Catching Fire” Asking for a celluloid sneak would be a stretch, but we don’t think it’s completely inconceivable to think a first snapshot might find its way to the Web by the final days of 2012. Here’s hoping the “Catching Fire” director (whomever he/she will be) isn’t afraid to take a cue from “Breaking Dawn” helmer Bill Condon, who released the first photographic teaser for the final “Twilight” installments over Thanksgiving in 2010. Happy holidays, “Hunger Games” fans? What are your expectations for “The Hunger Games” in 2012? ‘Breaking Dawn’ Leading In Round One Of MTV Movie Brawl!

‘Hunger Games’ races to front, while dark horses ‘John Carter’ and ‘Dark Shadows’ also show promise in 2012 tourney. By Eric Ditzian Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart in “Breaking Dawn – Part 1” Photo: Summit Entertainment It’s the brawl to win it all! On Tuesday, we launched MTV Movie Brawl 2012 , a winner-take-all tournament to pick this year’s must-see movie. Starting with 32 films in an epic “play-in” round to pick 16 flicks that will make it into our March Madness-style bracket, the Brawl has kicked off with fans giving it 110 percent, determined to leave it all out on the field, and ready to step up and make plays. This is what the playoffs are all about. As MTV News’ team of analysts pointed out at the start of the tourney, there are three front-runners at this early point in the competition: “Breaking Dawn – Part 2,” “The Hunger Games” and “The Dark Knight Rises.” So far, two of those flicks are living up to expectations, while one is going to have a lot of questions to answer if it can’t turn things around. “Breaking Dawn” has staked out an early lead and has got to be an odds-on favorite to secure a #1 seed when the 16-team bracket is chosen at the end of this first round. Hunger Games has got its game face on and is trailing close behind; a number-one seed for this rookie sensation seems like a lock. “Dark Knight Rises,” however, is not showing the determination and drive we’d expect from a film with such ravenous fans. Christopher Nolan’s third Batman movie has settled into the #6 slot thus far and will have to pick up the slack if it expects to head into the bracket with any sort of momentum. Voting in round one is open in MTV Movie Brawl 2012! Films that have been flexing some unexpected Movie Brawl muscle include “John Carter” and “Dark Shadows.” The former hits theaters in March, the latter in May; what they both have in common are fans coming out of the woodwork to support their underdogs and turn them into dark horses. Meanwhile, no one who’s been paying attention to the cinematic landscape should be surprised that “Snow White and the Huntsman” has been playing like a savvy vet, given that the film is led by Kristen Stewart. Veteran leadership, especially from “Twilight” stars, is going to prove a key factor as the Brawl moves forward. On the other end of the spectrum, there are a few films that are going to have to look themselves in the mirror and ask if they truly want to be in this competition. “Skyfall” and “The Amazing Spider-Man,” for instance, are both floundering in the back of the pack. Unless fans step up and vote for Bond and Spidey, these films are looking at an early trip home and months of second-guessing. And while we don’t expect high-brow fare like Quentin Tarantino’s “Django Unchained” to be able to tussle with the big franchises, we were hoping for more from QT fans than a first-round exit. So that’s where we stand on the second day of the competition. Anything can happen at this point. Seriously. That’s why we’ve just introduced a wild-card round in which fans will be able to add a few movies that didn’t make the original 32 — Robert Pattinson’s “Cosmopolis”? Emma Watson’s “Perks of Being a Wallflower”? — and, if they deliver enough votes, slip them into the 16-movie bracket. Voting in the first round closes Sunday, January 8, and the bracket kicks off on Monday, January 9. What are you waiting for? Your must-see movie needs your support. It’s time to show character, poise and heart. Vote for your picks now at MTV Movie Brawl 2012 ! New Hunger Games Poster: Beyond Hungerdome

Finally, a Hunger Games poster that reminds us of the carnage and calamity that made the books so addictive. Here, Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) stands before a packed stadium while her adversary Peeta Mellark’s (Josh Hutcherson) image flies above the crowd. Yes, this is the poster that Lionsgate asked Twitter uses to assemble from jigsaw clues — and it appears that @johnshoward is the one who pulled through. Pretty epic thunderdome. Katniss and Peeta are the new 2pac and Dre.
